It also suffers from a horrible yellowish look in the whites!
Apart from the above is not bad lol. Do your self a favour and save a little more money.
It's a real shame this had so much potential but got rushed here I think. NOT FULLY TESTED THATS FOR sure
I don't want to knock this tablet because in a strange sort of way I really liked it, that was when it was running OK, minus a few issues!

The Nexus 9 hasn't been released. Who said it will have zero issues?

That's true, but these are more than a few issues my friend more of a disaster.

Well sorry to say my shield is fine, no cracked edges, wifi is fine, no overheating and no battery drain. Peoples "facts" aren't necessarily the truth for everyone and the screen is fine without any yellow hue.

I can find threads on any device with people complaining of issues. I got the cracked corners, no problems with anything else. The Shield is a great tablet, many reviews will agree.
The only reason I'm selling mine is the Nexus 9 is 4:3, that simple. I'd keep the Shield if the N9 turned out to be 16:10 or 16:9.

So your telling me if you left your device on charge over night it still says 100% in morning ? Not 95%? Now you can not play games whilst on charge with out it discharging (fact)! what about your colour white? No yellow ting? Even in low light ?Okay about your WiFi what is your link speed under settings/WiFi/select your current router. And what if you cover the bottom right hand corner?
You are a lucky one! They might of checked you're one and not the other million , Cracked edges will take longer if you don't play a lot of games, BTW did not mention about over hearing forgot about that one!
There are lots and lots of nvidia shield tablet users that have some of these issues and others have all of them, and a few that say they have no issues at all. Then a week later you'll get a member saying I have just had to RMA my tablet because of that famous cracking corners.

This was why I brought it under good reviews.
I had yellow hue in the whites
Diss charging (on charge/playing games
And cracked corners
My WiFi was okay but lots of other members complained or just sent it back for a refund.

I returned mine due to the following:
- Wi-Fi issue.
- stylus palm rejection doesn't work properly
- stylus tip is slanted, like a creation that was cut at an angle. This makes using it to write notes awkward.

Have a little read about battery.

There seems to be more to the issue. Now that I'm back home and have the equipment to test this tablet, I'm seeing a ton of inconstancy.
As I said above, the tablet will only take a 1.6 amp max draw under any condition but tends to jump all over the place. Even at 80% with heavy use the tablet tends to only draw around 1.1 to 1.2 amps at times. Other times it will draw a full 1.6. There appears to be no rhyme or reason to when it chooses to draw what it does. I have tested it from 20%, 80%, 100%. Reboots will at times get the tablet to pull what it should be, though I think a 2 amp draw would be better as we could net a positive charge under use then.
So Nvidia, you need to look in to this issue. It is definitely a problem. It should never pull that little under heavy use while the battery is not charged. The fact it is easily replicated should help as I would wager it effects all units.
I'm happy to discuss this with anyone on the thread, but I am only interested in actual testing with the proper equipment. If you have it, test it as I have and lets compare our findings. Not that it would make any difference unless you are running a custom kernel , but I'm looking for stock 1.1 tablet findings.

I never once posted or said it was drawing more then 2 amps. The Nvidia converter box isn't that great either. I was simply stating that better quality parts netted a better result for me. Shortly after, I started to notice the amperage draw inconstancy. At first I thought it might be heat related until I did some more testing using a infrared thermometer on the back of the unit during charge and charge with use. The temps played no part in the amp draw from my findings on my tablet.
I think this is both a software and hardware issue. If you have testing results that differ from mine, please feel free to share. The purpose of this threads was to get info from everyone.

[Q] Reconsidering the Xoom, but would like some input.

First of all, this isn't a "why I don't like the Xoom" post. Actually, there is a lot that I do really like about the Xoom, and I'm optimistic that once Flash, 4G, and a few more Honeycomb-optimized apps come to the device, it will be a very capable device.
The reason I'm posting here is that I purchased the Xoom online from Verizon when it first came out, but there were a few things that bothered me enough about it that I returned it after about a week to make sure that I didn't land outside the return window. I have however, been considering buying another one, this time directly from the Verizon store so I can spend a little more time with it to determine if I like it enough to justify the $800 expenditure. So, I wanted to post my major nits with the product here to see if others have found them to be not as much of an issue or had found workarounds that solve some of these problems. I know there have been other posts about many of these problems, but I was hoping to get some fresh perspective now that the device has been out and in people's hands for a little longer.
Here's what is keeping me from going out and buying another Xoom right now.
1. I didn't like the display. On auto-brightness, it seemed like it was always too dark, and even the maximum manual brightness setting it still wasn't bright enough to overcome the glare that the screen attracted when I was sitting by a window or near a lamp. I felt like I was always struggling to see what was on the screen, even when indoors. Has anyone had luck solving this with, for example, an anti-glare screen protector? Or was this something that you adjusted to and found to be less of an issue over time?
2. The portfolio case, though serviceable, was unattractive and clunky, but I didn't like the lack of screen protection on the gel case. Is the gel case maybe worth another look, or are there any third party cases in the works that look promising?
3. It can't charge via USB, and the power adapter is a little larger than something I would like to have tucked in my bag all the time. How do you keep your Xoom charged on the go? Do you find that the advantage of being able to charge the Xoom quickly makes up for the fact that it can't be charged by a universal mini-usb?

1. I agree with the auto brightness. I turned this off and keep the brightness at 75%. I added Zagg invisibleshield and it has significantly reduced glare, fingerprints and smudges. I am happy.
2. I ordered this but it has not arrived yet: http://www.zoogue.com/shop/#xoom-zoogue-case-genius I am currently using the Moto gel case and it works for now.
3. I haven't had an issue with the charger. It charges very fast and the battery life is very good.
I love my xoom, though i don't see a lot of resolution for you on these issues.
1. I love the display, agreed it's hard to see in bright light (but this to me is normal).
2. I like the portfolio case and use it constantly.
3. For me the lack of usb chargning is fine, as the default charger charges so fast and my battary lasts me all day. I can charge from empty to full in less then two hours and get at least a good 12 hour day of off again on again usage.

i turned of auto brightness and the screen is great for me now.
haven't put a case on it (waiting for a good one to come out).
i left the shipping cover plastic on the screen until i decide on what screen protector i am going to use.
no usb charging was not a deal breaker for me as it has been noted before that the charge time is fast and the use time is high.
1. I use mine on a bus and outside and haven't really had a problem with brightness, the glare is a killer though. Inside, at night when using the kindle app, I'd like to turn down the brightness. I picked up the Steinheil screen protectors (matte) and it really cut down on the fingerprint smudges and glare. Yea, the screen isn't as crisp as without the protector, but the smudges ruined it anyway. I took auto brightness off but keep the display turned down.
2. I haven't seen any third party case even for the ipad that I really like. The portfolio from Motorola is the best I've seen so far and I'm really disappointed. It needs to have a typing position, maybe 20-30% incline.
3. I would have liked a mini usb charger. I'll probably get a second one but by charging it at night I have more than enough juice to get through a day.
Motorola had a $100 off coupon floating around and the wifi models are being released at the end of this month which should be less expensive.

I have a Zoogue iPad case and have used it for the past 8 months. It is amazing and has held up perfectly. It is an awesome case especially if you intend to watch a fair bit of videos with your tablet. Maybe not the prettiest case around, but it protects the hell out of the tablet and not only allows you any angle of incline, but also a very sturdy base so that it wont go tipping over if you tap the tablet too hard.
I agree with most people here.
1. Forget the auto brightness. It's useless.
2. I really want the zoogue case, let me know how it is. I'm ok with the portfolio case. It's definitely grown on me. I have two big issues with it though: lack of a 30-degree angle for tabletop use, but i've gotten used to the "low angle", and no charging while closed. someone in the accessories forum suggested punching a hole with a punch meant for making holes in a belt and it worked like a charm (hint: try asking your dry cleaner/alternation shop if you can use theirs, that way I didn't have to buy one). Looks like it almost was meant to be there.
3. I would have liked the 'option' of a mirco usb charger, but honestly, I use it every day at work unplug in the morning, use at home after dinner and plug in at night, and have never had an issue. I even went away for the weekend (sat morn to sunday night) and brought my charger, but i never charged it. I dont see it as an issue.

1 - I operate my device on auto brightness pretty much all the time, the only exception to this is when QuickPic fires up because it ramps it to 100%. I have found that in most normal operating environments I can see the screen perfectly. I am not outdoors with it very often but I know what you are talking about because it is difficult to see under direct or even semi direct sunlight.
2 - I'm going to buy a gel case right now, I already own the protective case. I want to try them both and figure that I'll use the Gel case around the house and the protective case out at work.
3 - There is a car charger, but I am unaware of a more compact Xoom charger.
Thanks to everyone who has commented so far. I'm leaning strongly towards giving the Xoom another shot, although I might wait until they start shipping with 4G, so I don't have to send it back to Moto for a week for the upgrade.

I'm still not over the display quality. This is one of the main factors why I'm weighing to sell the xoom and get another honeycomb tablet in the future.

I found the xoom's ability to charge quickly makes up for the lack of usb charging. additionally, when in a car traveling long distances, i can hook up the charger to a power generator i bought for the car that easily hooks up to the lighter port.
I'm going to wait it out, and try and get the samsung tablet 10.1 coming out in about a month.
I too use auto brightness all the time, but maybe I live in a dark existence.
I use the gel case all the time, and no screen protector. When I take it with me, its in my protective net book sleeve in my backpack so I'm not really worried about the screen. If I start to hear complaints here about screen issues (other than the gym bag guy) I may seek better protection.
I don't find the charging to be an issue as the battery lasts a long time. I think the car charger (<$30) is a good idea if you are gonna be in the car for even 15 minutes or so. If you can hook up the standard dock someplace in your car you can charge it and play audio from itnto the aux port on your stereo if you have one...

Very much so; it charges it so fast and the battery life is so good I just don't worry about it any more. I might get a car charger for the times I can't get home in time, once they get 2nd-sourced (to save money) but so far, so good.
I suffer under no delusions that a device like this will be viewable in direct lighting (including sunlight). I pretty much assumed going in that I'd still be using my classic Nook with e-ink for reading outside...
i bought one and I returned it because of the same issues. Then I bought my wife an I pad 2 and i tested it for a few day and I
notice the xoom is so fast and you not handcuffed to apple products that I went and bought the xoom again and this time I'm keeping it.

[Q] Problems occurring in batches?

After reading all of the crappy review for the transformer, it looks as if 50% are happy 50% are not.
I am wondering if the problems are occurring in batches because I just ordered mine from American TV and it will probably be here tomorrow or the next day.
A lot of the problems I have found are from the batches that have already been purchased and I don't know what to think.
Two things:
When asus was first bringing these to market, it could the problems are coming from they just naturally skimped on manufacturing quality because they are so damn cheap. Or they had a bad batch to get them to market quickly.
Asus could also just had normal manufacturing quality before and NOW since there is a high demand, newer units may experience worse manufacturing quality. Or they could be better because they knew of the problems.
Hope its not too confusing, what do you guys think? Newer units = worse quality? Older Units = better than newer?
i think logically you could expect the first units to have the most problems, however, we dont know if asus had enough complaints, or realized that there are defects (if there are--aside from software side) to be able to retool and make changes during the assem process to produce better revised hardware.
I actually gave this exact topic a lot of thought a few days ago, i thought about everyones complaints and how it was hit/miss it seemed, and i wondered whether the people that are complaining were truly the "first" adopters and got REV 1 hardware. Obviously, since they are playing with the tab and most of us are anxiously awaiting its arrival i would assume it just may be the case. Heres to hoping that these little glitches were an easy fix at the factory level (but knowing how they operate i doubt its a simple/cheap/quick process, which makes me doubt that the tabs that me and you will receive this week will be any diff from the ones recieved by the people last week and the one prior. the time frame is just too small, but then again, anythings possible).

Definitely have to agree. My guess they are the same and it is so difficult for Asus to actually respond to problems and transfer a fix to the manufacturing of the units. The only real thing I am worried about is the light bleed/dead pixels.
Moreover, the problem seems to be 50-50 and my estimate came from the assumption that there is manufacturing quality loss through increase production speed to meet the high demand. I tend to believe this because of the poor quality control. I am assuming (after reading the post about the guy receiving a 2.2 model) is that they do perform screen quality checks, to a certain extent. Some may have just slipped out.
Lets just hope we get a solid model.
I tend to side with the second poster...it's all about quality control....how many get out the door without their defects being noticed OR....being flagged as a defect.
I've worked around assembly lines all of my life...25+ years and I can understand some defects got through unnoticed....but the question is: when were they noticed and what steps were taken to prevent the same issue from occurring again?
And the second point is valid also....speed equals a mindset of "this one little corner-cutting decision won't make that big a deal in the long run...."
Unfortunately, rushing things to market to fill orders at a breakneck pace means that issues are more likely to get by...that's a fact of life.
When cash is on the line...decisions get made that might not otherwise gotten made.
I hope mine comes today without the glaring errors that I've seen here...crossing my fingers...
My only real complaint is the light bleed. I know it isn't the only device that's had this problem. I remember when I was reading the Evo 4G forums it had a similar problem when it first came out and recently the iPad2 had light bleed issues too.
The light bleed isn't a huge deal, but it is distracting while watching certain tv shows and movies imo.
I've had 3, first one was the very first batch in the UK, arrived mid April or thereabouts. The next one was around the end of April and the the latest one I received around the 6th of May.
1) Mid April
Some lightbleed on 3 of 4 edges. Perfect screen in terms of pixels. Imbalanced speakers. No sleep of death in 2 weeks or so. No gap in glass.
2) End April
Terrible lightbleed. 14+ stuck pixels (I gave up counting). I think the speakers were imbalanced too. No sleep of death, but only used it for a few minutes. No gap in glass was noticed.
3) Start of May
Some lightbleed, probably akin to 1. Around 8 or so stuck pixels, seen on black screen. Perfectly balanced speakers. Had 1 incident of the sleep of death within 5 days. Glass does not fit perfectly on left hand side (gap of 1-2mm allowing dust inside and glass to be lifted by nail)
Had I known what would happen I would now gladly stick with the first! So, from this small sample it seems that in my case the earlier devices were better in some ways but not in others. We'd have to have a huge sample to be able to answer definitively. I still love the tablet though.
I have a first US batch version and it's fine.
This is why I just ordered the Acer. I got mine and had some light bleed. It got worse. The creaking got worse. Now there is a small piece of dust under the screen. It is not very noticeable except on white background but it worries me that in 6 days of ownership it is getting worse. I now see a dust spec under the camera glass.
The edges of all the ports are razor sharp and can take off skin.
I love the weight the price and the ups screen but the build quality is very disappointing. If it was only the light bleed from day one I would keep but I can't handle how much more has happened in 1 week of ownership.
I got a 32 DB Livonia using coupons from staples for only 40 dollars more than a 16gb Asus cost me. The screen in store was quite good. The build quality seemed much better and despite the added weight it seemed more comfortable. To hold given the curved shape. If availability were better maybe I would exchange my Asus but no stock around.
in the end I might just opt for the new galaxy tab as it seems to be most like the load in size and weight.

I just got the TF in the mail today. It is nice.. but there are some drawbacks from the xoom that I miss.
Xoom felt nicer in my hand and had that led notification. But the screen on the TF is WAAY better.
I do have light bleed in small sections, not terribly noticeable. Speakers are fine. no dead pixels, yet. not really a creaky sound, just when I press harder than normal on the screen. No glass misaligned. I will seal up the beast with a vinyl cover. Screen is responsive, no probs yet.
A bit disappointed
I received my TF this Thursday and was so very happy. After unwrapping it I pressed the power button and I got nothing. I thought OMG it's not working. Then I thought, maybe they didn't have time to charge the battery. So I charged it. I checked on in within a hour and pressed the button and it came on. I began to play with it and realized that after the TF wasn't in use for more than 5 mins the power button whenever pressed didn't wake the TF up... SO i pressed and pressed.. nothing.. so I waited about 30 sec after a press of the button and it came on.. After going thur this over and over I figured it was a defect and I RMA'ed it. I'm hoping that they didn't just push out a product that will have a lot of issues...
Here's my two cents:
Got my TF from Fry's in LA on May 5th. 32GB don't know manf date.
For light bleed - minimal sround the left lower edge and upper right edge. Dark room, bright up full, about a 1mm bleed - very slight and almost unnoticible.
Running latest update with no issues, just updated again today with no issues.
Sometimes after a long sleep it won't power back up with the power button, so I press the vol down and pwr at the same time (shut down) and it shuts down and restarts fine...Seems a sw glitch.
Other than that it's an awesome machine!
Dock - arrived on the 12th. charged up fine, docked fine, no mouse, brick or other issues other than the backspace key is touchy (actually not touchy -takes some effort), but all other keys work well. I think I'll RMA it later depending on how many show in production (I can live with this for now).
Case - had to cut a small hole in bottom to allow charging while case is closed. Otherwise great.

I feel like I've said this before, but I'm honestly surprised to hear of all of these issues. Mine doesn't seem to have any of them. No gaps around the screen, the glass fits perfectly, the casing for the tablet seems sturdy and doesn't budge at all. There's very little noticeable light bleed, if any. I've never had anything like a "Sleep of Death". I couldn't be happier with the quality of this beast.
EDIT: I should mention I have a 32GB version that I purchased from TigerDirect on Wednesday, got it this past Thursday.
My tablet and dock were among the older units. I had only one instance of SOD and the green screen with the camera issue which has been fixed via firmware update.
The tablet itself appears to be of high build quality,the bezel is secure, no gaps around the screen seal, no dust,no dead pixels,very minimal light bleed that I had to actively look for.
no problems to speak of
eGoing on 2 weeks ownership using various each day.
The only thing a few times I've come back to an unresponsive unit. Then I just held power button down 10 seconds and then rebooted. I take that with a grain of salt.
But. I am not going to update software for another week or so. Until I read more positive reviews
Many problems with mine
I ordered mine from The Best Buy batch on May 22nd, and it came with a not-smooth not-particularly-responsive screen; it then got two light leak spots, the clock disappeared from the menu bar once, and it bricked when I ran the 3.1 update. I sent it back, but I wonder, are the screens really not as smooth or responsive as the Xoom or Acer A500?

Got a Transformer today - impressions on defects

I just received my Asus Transformer (32GB) today. Thought I'd give my thoughts on the defects that have been mentioned on the forum.
I'm really happy with my Transformer. The light bleed is minimal. At 100% brightness, I can see the lower left and the two spots along the bottom, but it's really not that distracting. I don't' notice it in dark scenes in movies.
No speaker issues - good balance, no pop (yet).
I started charging (and using at the same time) at 30%, and it took about two hours to charge to 100%. Charger does get pretty hot.
I updated to v3.1. But the little bit of playing I did before that was fine. Pretty responsive screen. Note, other people seem to indicate the default desktop is the active one with the glass? Mine came with a tree/hill static desktop.

Wi-fi is fast (1.3 mBps on one download). GPS and compass works great. MicroSD card works good. Plays movies OK, but I don't have any HD movies yet...play 350MB / 50 minute AVI's fine.
Slight plastic squeek on the left back side between the back and the bezel. No biggie.
Video capture from the back camera (5MP) better than I thought. I saw reviews where there were a lot of artifacts and skipping. No issues with this build.
Overall, really snappy! Only hiccup was at some point (after the 3.1 update, after I had installed and played a few games), I flipped the tablet around and the screen turn into the black screen with the Asus logo in the middle. Couldn't get it to go away until I push the power button. Touch screen didn't do anything. Who knows.
Every piece of technology has is glitches, some are minor while others can be maddening. Especially when you're on the cutting edge. Overall the TF is a very good product and I'm certain Asus will fix what it can. I've been a corporate buyer of Asus products since the early '90s and have always trusted their products.

Everyone is new to honeycomb and the hardware platform. One thing I have really started to understand is that there is no perfect device - everything has it's good and bad points. I'm am very happy with the TF overall because for my useage the good far outweighs the bad.
I don't really know when mine came off the manufacturing line. But, if mine is the latest off the line, maybe they're starting to work out the quality bugs? I hope.

Same here. This is actually my second Transformer. The first one I got from Best Buy had a vertical line on panel 3/4 that would show up pretty often. Tried to return it to them for a replacement but they were out of stock (of course). Then I bought my second one at Newegg and returned the first. Second one has no defects. Screen, cameras, speakers all good. No light bleed. I get a little creak in the right bottom corner but that is only when picking it up one handed. I imagine that puts a little stress on the case considering the weight of the device and I probably shouldn't do so
My personal experience with the Transformer has been generally great, especially given the price they ask for it.
But, Honeycomb in all honesty leaves a lot to be desired.
It never made the best impression on me when I bought my Transformer, but this week I picked up a Samsung Galaxy S2 and using Android 2.3 on a new high-end phone has really highlighted for me how much room for improvement there is for Honeycomb.
Honeycomb looks pretty and has a well thought out layout, but the stability and usability need improvement. Sadly with ICS on the way we'll probably have to wait until the end of the year to have a tablet-optimized Android that works anywhere as well as Android does on phones.
Im also on my second one after getting it replaced due to light bleed... no big deal.
If only.... there had been plenty of stock when released, there were no light bleed issues, speaker balance, buggy o/s it would be perfect.
But I still think its better then an ipad due to the freedom it gives in customization.
And I love streaming movies using upnp on my home wifi from nas perfectly
Same here. Minimun light bleed, some speaker unbalance, but no cracking nor any other thing.
Mine came stock with the tree wallpaper, and I have the water and ice also avaible.
Pretty happy with it.
I'm on my third one.a little crack on the lefthand since but other than that it's fine. Been reading a comparison on the Samsung GT 10.1 forum and everybody says that GT10.1 is much better. Why? Because it has a flash? And no microsd

You get 25 megaBytes per second? That seems kinda two fast...maybe it's 25 megabits per second? My home wireless network usually tops out at 2.2 megaBytes per second.

Malandro, how are you streaming movies? I have an Asus router w/ USB port running tomato, and I can connect a USB HD to it for the UPNP. But, when I try playing large avi's, it tries to download the whole thing before playing it, so I haven't played any movies on it, figure it wasn't capable of streaming?
edit: what movie app are you using? Also, what does your network look like? Router w/ USB external HD also? Can you stream off of windows shares (SMB) files?
As for my personal experience, no big complaints here but I think the creak on the left side is unacceptable for a device costing 400€, and one that for me highlights the lack of quality control in the manufacturing stage...
Other than that this is a fine device but Honeycomb still has to evolve as a platform, and I wished developers would see the vast android user market as one to take advantage of.
i.e. Simultaneous releases on both iOS and Android would be nice

I noticed that which direction you put the plug in makes a difference...since it can be plugged in both ways.
upside down gets warm....right side up not so much.
Right side up is looking at the plug like it's a face....the round hole on the bottom with the slots like they're eyes....and plug the TF plug in so you can read the ASUS when the plug goes in...

I had mine plugged in right side up the other day and it got as hot as I ever noticed (very hot!). I only plug in right side up however.

Interesting. I haven't come across that idea in the forums before. Basically, if the power strip was a face, you're putting the Asus tatoo on the forehead of the face
I'm charging mine now right side up, so we'll see. I forget which orientation I had it in last time.

The main problem with upside down charger is the polarity. Some have reported minor shocks. I say minor because it charges at what 15 volts? I am an electrician and used to shocks so that much is hardly negligible to me, more of an annoyance. I think to get a decent one 24 volts or more would be necessary but that does depend on circumstance and other factors. Everyone's sensitivity to shock is different. Best to keep it plugged in correctly.
Bought mine from BB about a month ago. If there's light bleed I'd have to be in a completely dark room with a dark screen to tell. Seems like a good build. No speaker problems except total volume is low. No creaks. No screen separation. 3.1 honeycomb?.... it and the programs written for it still need some work. The new Sammy looked nice at the store. Nice enough to take mine back and pay more for less features? No. I like my TF. I'm keeping mine. Got the dock on the way....

When your taking about download speeds why are you quoting '1.3 mBps' as bits everybody on the entire planet would think you're talking about bytes. it 25 bytes = 209715200 bits, give or take a few pancakes
We have virgin broadband at home and work, if i run an ADSL cable from the router direct to my laptop (no interference) at work i can scrape 32 megabytes
I certainly wouldn't be able to do my job at 2.2 megabytes!

And also if it's backwards, the case gets a slight charge....if you touch it ever so lightly, you'll get a tingle.

So, if the power strip is with the holes up (like the eyes on a face) the usb plug on the charger would be on the downside? or on the upside?
I stream my content using upnp, from an external hdd plugged into a router via usb, with buzz player (Paid app).
EDIT: Plex server for windows (Free) + Plex for android (Paid) also work pretty good.

Considering a Nexus 7... screen separation?

So what's the consensus? I was really considering picking up a Nexus 7 until I read about the screen separation issues. I used to have an ASUS Transformer and really liked ASUS's build quality. Is the Nexus 7 really that bad? I don't like the idea of buying a $250 tablet and then having to open it up and modify it just to make it work properly. (Especially since the iPad Mini is rumored to be released next month.)

I personally loved my Nexus 7, and I'm one of the lucky ones who had their screen crack. I should be getting it back today, as it was supposedly fixed under warranty without a charge (guess I plead a good case when I called 4x reminding them I won't be paying for it). Keep in mind just how many of these units were sold. There's a handful of people here on the forums and AndroidCentral, etc., posting about this issue, yes... but go onto an Apple forum and you'll see the same thing.
Has the iPad mini even been announced yet? I keep hearing rumors but nothing solid. If you're somebody who doesn't mind iOS, it's not a bad option to wait, but you'll almost undoubtedly pay more for a similarly spec'd tablet. I personally wouldn't consider it, but that's just my 2c. If you're somebody who is pretty agnostic about it, waiting to see what more options come about is never a bad thing. Just don't catch the waiting disease... if you wait too long, you'll find yourself in a constant waiting hole with no devices you could otherwise be enjoying. :good:
I will say this, though. If you buy a Nexus 7, buy it from a local retailer. It's the same price as the N7 from Google Play, and plus you cut out the shipping time. Sorry Google, but being able to return a faulty N7 (in the event you get one) at a B&M store two miles away is still quicker than your (albeit, still fast) shipping turn around time.
The issue is not as great as the forums would make you believe. After all every single product ever made has a small number of defects.
Don't worry about it would be my suggestion.

I've had my Nexus 7 since it came out. Not a single defect or issue, its been great so far and I love it.

As with pretty much any product out there, I always take the online reviews with a grain of salt. A larger percentage of the people who had problems are likely to post compared to those that didn't have problems. Any time I buy something that causes me grief, I am generally ticked enough to want to post about it somewhere, but it rarely occurs to me to post something about products that work as promised and don't have issues.
This does not apply to my N7 because I love it so much I can not stop telling people. Mine has a tiny bit of screen lift that I would not have noticed if I had not read about it. Certainly not enough to want to try to return it. I may try one of the posted fixes but even that seems unlikely. Can't find the downtime...
The issues are there and they are real!
First Nexus = Creaking and Screen separation
Second Nexus = Screen separation
Third Nexus = Screen separation
Fourth Nexus = Severe creaking
Its sooooo sad as I love everything else about this freaking tablet! But the quality issues are out there just so you know it.
Huge issues
I think the screen lift screen crack and screen becoming un responsive is a HUGE Issue.. Its not just this forum where you see compalints.. You see it from tech reviews and so on.. I know that this is Hyped up causing to to be a bigger issue then it is . But the issue is not just the defects . Its how google and Asus has chosen to deal with this.. They have had my money cost of 3 tablets locked away due to exchange waiting . I Call and email with no response other then we will foreword it to a specialist .
I say get One From a Bick and Mortar store with a good reputation for taking care of there customers .. Buy a Extended warranty to where the STORE Has to deal with your device If and when it breaks.. I have never in my life seen such a Lack of Customer Service or Lack of Response for such issues .. Im left to where if i do not get a shipping confirmation and PAYMENT BACK TO MY BANK i will Have to file a complaint because im near the required time to do so with my card ... This is Pathetic..

I have one that has slight screen lift and creaking, but It's honestly not bad enough for me to worry about. I can't detect it unless I carefully look at it from the side, or press on the screen hard enough to make it flex. The case I have it in completely hides the problem.
Now, should it happen? No. But I bought a Nexus 7 because it was a fairly high-spec tablet that I didn't have to pay $500 for. I'm willing to accept a few compromises, especially when the cure (on-phone time, a bad refurb replacement) could be worse than the disease.
To minimize hassle, do what others have suggested and buy locally from a retailer with a good return policy.

The prevalence of screen lift is not being exaggerated. It's a widespread flaw, the cause of which is present in every unit. That's not to say that every display is separated, but the way the devices have been assembled through August (C8O serials) has left every Nexus 7 with an inadequate bond under the left side of the display.

Although the adhesive is weak in that area, some other stress should be required to actually force the underside of the display away from the frame. That force is either frame warp or pressure from internal components. ASUS has begun omitting screws from the left side of the device in an attempt to remove some of the stress behind the separation. This points to frame warp as the primary contributor, but it's a partial fix at best.

The fact that ASUS is now implementing reductive measures against screen lift as part of its assembly process should lay to rest any doubts about the scope of this flaw.
Having said that, I would not advise against buying a Nexus 7. It's still the best 7" tablet available, not to mention the best value for a tablet of any kind.
I went through three units with lift before deciding to wait it out, but this was not necessarily the correct decision. My second unit had merely the slightest lift and was well worth keeping, but users on this forum misled me to believe that screen lift was a rare thing so I exchanged it. My third one had more lift and exhibited distortion when pressed along the left side. That one was not worth keeping, so I decided to return it and wait for this issue to be fixed. Not sure if that's going to happen.
Like JaSauders said, the probability of lifted glass cracking during normal use seems very low, and if flexing the display caused a row of dead pixels, or any other sort of display failure, that would be covered under warranty.
I will say this, i never noticed the screen separation until I came to these forums and read about it, HOWEVER, now that I know about it, it drives me crazy.
On the flip side, if you plan to use a case that covers the bezel, you experience or see it anyway, so its not a big deal.
I haven't experienced any other issues aside from the screen seperation, and even then its not noticeable until you start messing with it.

Both units I've received so far have had the problem to some extent. The first one had it really bad and I exchanged it when I heard that it may be causing screens to crack. The 2nd one also had the problem, but the screen lift was so small that I wasn't worried about it. I still ended up exchanging the 2nd unit because of other issues (mostly the oleophobic coating was rubbing off) and should be receiving my 3rd one today.
If it means anything though, even with the screen lift problem, I still consider this the best tablet for the price and I have no interest in the new Kindle Fire or iPad Mini.

Putting case over the edge of the tablet is NOT a fix for the screen separation issues . Eventually the glass will move enough from this causing it to become weak. or a piece of dirt will get under the screen and it WILL CRACK Or crumble. Anytime hard glass is put in a situation where it can move independently being twist or bent It will weaken and crack .
I know this from Structural Engineering classes.. I have been a project manager for high rise construction for much longer then some of those on here are old. . Glass that is scratch / impact resistant MUST BE SECURED PERFECTLY . Must be allowed to expand and contract from edge to edge .. But must be fixed firmly and equally on all sides with no extra pressure or lack of in any area.. THE LAST Sentence here is the ISSUE WITH THE NEXUS TABLET
Now with the above said i to agree its the best Device right now with its size and cpu.. If there were a worthy 7 inch Device i would NOT OWN A NEXUS 7 .. check out the specs on the new corning-FIT Glass... There should be a metal frame for this glass to sit in..and it should over lap the edge of the screen NO GLASS From edge to edge ..
Of course this is all my opinion. Make your own judgement.. But do not Pretend there is not a issue just because you Love your device and you accept less then Perfect...

My screen never separates to the point where anything could get under it... it just lifts up enough where I can press it back down..I'm not sure that would ever be bad enough to crack the screen. I'm have a C8O build so it may not be as bad as previous models? Im not sure.

Update: Got the 3rd unit
It's one of the new C8O models and it's the best one I've gotten so far.
No screen lift, no flickering, none of the issues I had with the previous ones.
It's pretty much flawless as far as my eyes can tell.

Congrats My C8O had minor lift, but last night I decided to glue it down and now its fine. Two drops of super glue and 5min later I havent had a problem all night/this morning. Played a bunch of 3D games to really heat it up and its golden.
I have the screen lift issue, but I have decided not to replace it. I would recommend that customers purchase the extended warranty at the store if in fact covers broken displays.
That said, I just rub down the face with a microfiber cloth before use and the lift is eliminated for a duration. Helps with the finger prints too.
That said, once a competing tab is released with the same specs I'd recommend that one instead. This QA issue will make me avoid Asus in the future. Google needs to vet OEMs better next time.
I've had four Nexus 7 tablets that have all had screen lift on the left side. Just got my latest one yesterday and it still has the issue. I've purchased lots of tablets and gadgets and this having to exchange something this many times and still getting a defects two months later is hardly normal or expected.
Fortunately the raised glass doesn't impair the functionality of the table (normally) and the tablet is pretty nice with stock Android Jelly Bean, Tegra 3, high DPI screen, and only $200/250. So all it's good points do outweigh ASUS incompetence to manufacture the tablet properly.

[Opinion] Why so many complaints?

Maybe it's just me, but I feel like the G5 is catching a lot crap for almost no reason at all... I've had mine for 1 week now, and no major issues to speak of. It functions as it should, build quality is nearly perfect, and it just works... As the title states, this is all my opinion, so let me break some things down...
Screen bleed: This is bound to happen with most all LCD devices. Even your LCD television will have this issue if the room and screen are dark enough. Some of you that have posted pictures do in fact have a relevant reason for return as it is pretty bad. But also, some of you are just being entirely too picky.
AUX audio noise: This device is native 24bit lossless at 192kHz... MOST of the "cheap" aux cables you buy at the store just don't have the quality wiring inside that you need for this device, and will give you the audio hiss. You're gonna want something that is Audiophile grade (this just simply means high quality), with a thicker wire, better connectors, etc. The basic run of the mill cables just aren't gonna cut it with this device. I ended up going with THIS cable, and my hiss went away. (Your results may vary)
The chin gap: This is directly related to how the battery clips in. The connectors inside the phone are spring loaded and very slightly push back against the battery. On top of that, they are there are two parts that are simply being "snapped" together, so there is bound to be a gap. Again, I too have this "issue" on my phone, but it is so minor that it doesn't really matter. (It's also completely hidden by my case now too) I wouldn't say this is a lack of QC, but rather just certain individuals wanting perfection from a non-perfect world. It's just not gonna happen. An idea for LG, may be to put 2 very small rare earth magnets on either end of the chin module to help combat the spring push from inside the phone?
The clicky power button: Really people? It's a click style power button to begin with. While I will agree the button cap (the part we actually see) could be a bit better than what it is, why is this even a quality complaint? Those of you that are shaking your phone in a silent room and "hearing" the button move are probably mistaken. While the button does have minuscule movement to it, what you are actually hearing is the OIS sensor moving. It's supposed to if you shake the phone.
TL;DR: Complaints are fine if they are legitimate. But most of these are not. It's nothing more than a case of people being far too finicky over the build of a launch device. One can ALWAYS expect to run into SOMETHING they don't like about a first launch device, but should not haze the device to the point of making it potentially fail. If you want things fixed, yes report them, but also look into solutions. Don't haze the product to the point that it scares others away from an otherwise beautifully designed and wonderful product.

I have to nitpick here (sorry!). If you lightly hold the button still as you shake the device, there is no noticeable sound. Yet there is certainly a sound from the shaken button and although I am not too familiar with the OIS sensor (I think it has something to do with correcting shaky hands like mine ruining photos?), I am quite sure it is not located in the power button.
However, I cannot yet say I have any complaints about the phone. The button does not actually bother me at all, nor do any of the other complaints I have read here or otherwise. I really think the G5 is an exceptional, well crafted device and I love it! :good:

I don't understand why people that don't even have the phone come here on a daily basis, you prefer the s7 then go, if your holding out for etc m10 then leave. I personally love mine. The only issue I have with this phone at the moment is this forum, you come here for help and all you get it BS.
I'm not sure what the deal is either. The media seems to be running with the "this phone is a mess" story for whatever reason. Could the phone use some more refinement? Can they fix some manufacturing and QC issues? Sure, but it seems they're throwing out a really great combination of hardware and features for no good reason that I can determine. Perhaps the preview models were noticeably worse than production? It's also seems to be random things... Nexus 6P has large sensor bar on back, gloss over it. LG G5 has large sensor bar on back, "goodness the design is terrible". It's just weird. I'm also of the opinion that the rough chamfer is intentional for grip, not a QC issue. Would be interesting to hear LG"s take on that just like their explanation of the microdized finish which allowed them to get rid of the antenna bars. People keep using terms like half baked or not thought out but when you hear from the design team it sounds like that isn't close to being the truth. I can get why some folks might not agree with their choices but I'm not sure about the overall panning that seems to be going on. They're using their own patented aluminum for the phone for goodness' sake, who else is developing their own proprietary materials? I dunno, I guess I'm just in the minority on this one for whatever reason.

Right? You'd think you were on xda-fashionistas with all the whining about how the phone looks/feels compared to x, y, or z. I thought this forum was supposed to be about development and had a technical lean, but it seems like more than half the people here are either trying to start arguments about why they prefer the S7 or complaining about how their 9th trade-in phone has a sub-millimeter gap with the removable module.
Note: This is not an invitation for someone to come in and defend themselves about why they're upset about the primer/paint or the unnoticeable screen bleed. I bought a hand-held computer, not a purse. I came to this forum to talk about the phone functionality, not listen to people tell me that the phone I bought is inferior because of something that has nothing to do with how the phone functions.

Sorry to double post... But yes, you are correct. Just tested this on mine. I still have to say tho... It's not as big a deal as many are making it out to be.
I just got my pink G5 yesterday, was at the shop and been through 3 units, first one had the silver line missing underneath the release hatch or scratched off, unit 2 soft white color burn on the screen when all color showing using a test app, on the unit 3, found a small dint just right at the edge between the main unit and battery adapter, but kept it, and didn't care about it as it isn't really noticable unless you really look close, it also has the light bleed when I checked this in a dark room, I have 14 days to return it, if i decide to, but yeh they all have minor problem, this isn't just LG, and i'm very picky but decide to keep the 3rd unit, it's solid built, works well and I really like it.
If people are have problems with their unit and can't accept it, exchange it or get a different phone, no one is forcing you to keep it.
I haven't had the gap issue and just went into the bathroom, no light bleed. Maybe there is a QC problem and I got a solid one? I'm not complaining. I know I'll have the monthly security update in six months while S7 people are still on June.
I'm surprised that the complain threads are allowed to go on. It not only hurts the site,it hurts the company that made the phones. I think some of the writers that review these phones are abusing their power and becoming a bit reckless.

same here, this phone is dope. had the g2 then the g4 now this and havent really been disappointed with any of them. got used to ux 5 pretty quick. not in any rush to root stock feels so smooth once set up. ability to disable the bloat apps is cool. wide angle camera is super cool and the fingerprint scanner is actually really fast idk why people keep mentioning it being slow in reviews.
The clicky power button is annoying, but i'm trying not to use it. The chin gap worries me when it comes to water. Mainly though, people are just too picky.

A bit of rain or a splash here and there probably won't be a concern, even with the design of this phone. There's a video out of someone putting it in a sink full of water for 2 minutes and it survives just fine. I would not advise taking it in the shower or pool tho.
I for one love my G5. Started with the G2, fell in love with the rear buttons, migrated briefly to the Nexus 5X (couldn't live without Knock features and rear buttons), and now to the G5.
The G5 is really an evolution of the Nexus 5X, they are almost identical in physical size, except the fingerprint scanner is a smaller diameter, which is the cause of the semi-flakiness. It's too easy to just mash your finger across the sensor and miss the portion that got 'enrolled'. This can be addressed by enrolling your finger multiple times to get a larger portion of your finger tip, I've also found that my phone case helps guide just the tip of your finger to the scanner which greatly increases reliability!
It seems the G5 has been held to a different review standard than other devices due to its modularity. Instead of reviewing the G5 on its own merits plus cool potential for modules, it has been mostly reviewed on the merits of its lack luster existing modules and the weak stock launcher missing an app drawer. If I reviewed a new laptop I wouldn't judge it based on the available accessories, that would be ridiculous! The device reviews should stand on their own, anything else is just a cherry on top.
I don't see anyone mentioning the great call quality, the fantastic signal strength, and hardly any mention of the IR blaster! That thing is so useful - you can change TV channels at the gym, in hospitals, or on your couch if you can't reach the remote. Plus we have USB-C, I can't tell you how great a reversible connector is - no more fumbling at night trying to plug in, got used to this on the NX5 and won't go back.
Here are the main gripes summarized so we can see how ridiculously picky these are -
Light bleed (I would never have even known if I hadn't downloaded a specific app to test this!)
Finger print scanner flaky (see above, this is a non-issue)
Build quality issues (no doubt these do exist in some form or another on every device! my phone is fine)
Missing app drawer (use a 3rd party launcher or Home 4.0 from smart world)
Aesthetic (do you use a case?)
By the way, if you boost the DPI of your screen through ADB the usage experience gets much better! Mine is set to 540.
I think people have been too hard on this phone too, honestly. I just got it today and am pleased I have no chin gap, screen bleed, ECT.
Coming from the "Lagaxy S6" that I got on release because they promised me that the battery and performance would be the best thing since Jesus walked the earth was an absolute lie. I have never owned a phone with more horrible screen on and stand by time in my entire life. It was smooth for the first couple weeks and the usual lag came back (their apologists will never admit it and claim its been fixed) as well as the horrible RAM management fiasco.
Oh my god, what a joy to have a speedy keyboard, a fast messaging app, a phone that actually doesn't chew endless percentage points off my battery with the screen off, and apps still being in memory after a few minutes, I am in heaven. Oh and the spare battery module is nice, as well as the IR blaster someone else mentioned above. I was going to get the HTC 10 but after AndroidCentrals guys kept saying the battery really wasn't special I knew what j needed to do.
Thank you LG, you saved me from a year of absolute hell.
I too think the complaints are a bit too much. G2 , G3, and now G5 user. Haven't found even one negative so far with the G5. Love it!

Yep, I have not had any of the app crashes, LED bleeding, major chin issues ect that others have mentioned. This has honestly been my best battery life phone since the Galaxy S2 FIVE YEARS AGO. That is insane and quite telling to me, I am glad LG got this right. This is the first LG phone I have ever owned and it makes me wish I had tried their other offerings in the past, I may have been much happier. Once I get my other battery I will slap it in after work at 100% and likely will never have to worry about running out of battery again. I hope LG keeps up this trend because there are definitely a lot of us here who appreciate them being one of the last major flagship carriers to offer this feature.
Speaking of removal battery, I remember how people were literally foaming at the mouth at the loss of such features in other flagships, yet LG listened to smartphone enthusiasts and gave them more options than most other manufacturers. They definitely deserve way more credit for giving the consumer options.
I have never cared for a device's design and I'm not going to start now.
I do think the paint thingy is a good idea in order to hide the antenna lines but it seems to come off very easily, so a case would be mandatory.
Secondly, there are some QC issues across the board when it comes to the paint thingy, light bleeding out the screen, and a variable gap size where the module clips.
When you take into consideration that these days design is (almost) everything, hence the build quality, there's the rant about the G5. In all fairness, if similar issues would have arisen, Samsung or Apple would have also taken a beating.
That being said, even if I would receive a perfectly well built G5, I would still be semi disappointed :
- no camera improvement in low light situations (lights bleeding), although it is still one of the top performers
- no manual controls over filming while is was possible on the V10, why? It is clearly entirely possible since it seems to be a software development choice. I don't get it, LG says the G5 takes after the V10 but it lacks a native high quality DAC (the module is somewhat expensive and not available everywhere) and video manual controls
- this is a killer, only 32 gigs (same base storage since the G2 of old) of internal storage with no possibility to move apps the the SD card nor to convert the SD card into adoptable storage (though I would do it with ADB)
Even if it was possible natively to convert the SD card into adoptable storage, some apps like Spotify would then download everything directly to the small internal storage. I don't know why storage hasn't become a massive issue yet when you consider that OS (and skins like the LG UI), apps and photos aren't getting smaller anytime soon !
On the other hand, I love the secondary wide lens, but I fear it would be too much work to enjoy the G5 as it is. I am already juggling with different storage spaces with my G4 (internal, 128 gigs SD card, cloud and external (backups on my PC)). I need a lot of stuff offline since I'm travelling abroad quite a bit, so streaming content (Google photos, Spotify) is not always an available option.

Im even more surprised that this trend of starting threads to actively discredit people with legitimate issues is being allowed at all. When people have issues with a device IT SHOULD HURT THE COMPANY. Treating a massive multi billion dollar world wide corporation like its some sort of tiny start up charity is ridiculous.
You dont want the forum having complaints because it hurts the community somehow? From where im sitting what hurts the community is misleading ignorant crap like what the OP is trying to pull. Trying to convince people nothing is wrong in spite of the overwhelming evidence to the contrary is harmful to a community, only further hurts the reputation of the phone further. What do you think will happen when someone reads a thread like this and goes to buy the phone and finds out all the things he read where true? There goes the credibility of the community just because of some goofy ass notion that a device needs defended from itself.
Screen bleed: This is bound to happen with most all LCD devices. Even your LCD television will have this issue if the room and screen are dark enough. Some of you that have posted pictures do in fact have a relevant reason for return as it is pretty bad. But also, some of you are just being entirely too picky.

OK find us another flagship phone with LCD screens that had even remotely close to this much backlight bleeding. Ill wait.
Didnt have that issue with my HTC one m8 or my Sony z3v. Dont have that issue with my gaming monitors either. QUALITY LCD panels DO NOT have noticeable backlight bleed. Its a staple of cheap poorly made budget panels.
AUX audio noise: This device is native 24bit lossless at 192kHz... MOST of the "cheap" aux cables you buy at the store just don't have the quality wiring inside that you need for this device, and will give you the audio hiss. You're gonna want something that is Audiophile grade (this just simply means high quality), with a thicker wire, better connectors, etc. The basic run of the mill cables just aren't gonna cut it with this device. I ended up going with THIS cable, and my hiss went away. (Your results may vary)

Not even remotely close to true at all. The fact that you think the onboard snapdragon DAC is audiophile grade is cute but wildly incorrect. The fact that you think cables can cause this issue is even more incorrect. You dont need any sort of special size for headphone cables to be high quality thats just plain ignorance. We are talking tiny amounts of power not some 1200 watt amp powering 2 OHM subs. Go look at audiophile grade IEMs they dont run large cables at all. Your defense is flat out wrong, what causes that hiss is a number of things but nearly all would be internal. Poor internal shielding, defects in the amp etc. Cables are not going to cause this unless they are cut, or flat out defective.
Also, as a side note lossless would be your music files not the DAC, no special cables are required for higher quality audio and 9 times out of 10 that "thicker high grade" cable is just plastic and crap with the exact same amount of copper as the tiny ****.
Chin gap never bothered me so ill leave that.

There is an issue at play here where the outer part of the button with the fingerprint sensor is coming unglued from the rest of it. Then its a matter of time before it moves the wrong way and you lose the fingerprint scanner altogether Thats the main reason you see people complaining and returning them because of the power button. The guy at my verizon store said thats the main reason he sees them coming back.
This notion that because you like the phone that you should stick your head in the sand and ignore the issues it has while trying to discredit anyone with actual issues is stupid. So is this mentality that people shouldnt be allowed to discuss said issues here. Just because you like the phone dont mean you get to sweep away all the negative attention its getting and pretend its all unicorns and rainbows in G5 land.

Well said, I had 3 replacements before i anally gave up and sent the phone back. This doesn't mean i didn't like the phone, i did, i really did but I am not going to pretend those issues dont exist and or will not arise in the future.
I want a device that is future proof not only in terms of performance but build quality. A blazing fast CPU is of no use if you dont have a working button to turn the phone on or off.
