Happy with the 720p screen?

I've seen a couple of articles talking about the Samsung Galaxy S5, which is rumored to have a QHD 2k screen ( 2560 x 1440).
Just curious what others thought. Personally, I went from the HTC Rezound (which was also a 720p screen, but smaller at 4.3", so a higher PPI) to the Moto X, but I love the Moto X screen. I honestly can't imagine having a screen that's any sharper. I almost don't want a higer-rez screen, since it would probably just be a waste of battery power.
I'm sure there are some folks who are spec-oriented, but I feel all of the trade-offs made by the Moto X (720p screen, dual core, etc) were exactly right. Great screen, great battery, responsive UI, etc.

The newer SOCs well be more efficient, it won't have issues delivering fast performance for 1080p while getting good battery if well optimized, especially if reduced to dual core like the MotoX.
The MotoX screen have RGB matrix so it would have more subpixels than a Pentile and Diamond matrix AMOLED screen of the same resolution.

I switched from the HTC One which had the most amazing screen. The Moto X is fine by all means though, it's vibrant and clear and 720P is more than adequate. I think I'm a sucker for AMOLED as well, the blackest of blacks, I'll never go backs. I've owned a GNex and a Note 1 and I feel this AMOLED is calibrated very well. Not quite as cartoony looking as my brother's Note 3.

The screen is 4.x" diagonally. If you can see a difference between 720p and 1080p, you need to take off your magnifying glasses and move the phone away from your face. While I'm all about bigger and better specs, a 2k res screen on a phone isn't necessary.

The Moto X was engineered to be the best balance of hardware/screen/size/battery etc available. To that end the 720p screen is perfect. When the same balance can be achieved with a higher resolution screen then I will want it.
You will notice this is very similar to how Apple engineers a phone, no hardware is included that isn't optimized and balanced. They don't force a feature into the phone for the sake of marketing that really hurts the overall product balance.

The MotoX screen is fine but not as good as other Android like S4. I am happy with battery life and screen on time though so its a trade off.

My only reference is my GS3 and the screen on the X is every bit as nice.

Ya know if the Moto x had a 1080 screen....battery wouldn't be as good. Personally I'll take the extra battery life. Screen looks good to me.

I have the note 3 and honestly, the difference between the 1080p screen of the Note 3 isn't that much better than the 720p screen of the Moto X. They are both very sharp and as was stated above, I would rather the increased battery life than the sharper display. But in all fairness, I'm no pixel junkie so the 720p screen doesn't bother me at all.

The only reason I was even remotely interested in the Moto X was because it carried an HD display-size: was AMOLED and was RGB-like matrix. The rest like usability and one-handed nature was icing on the cake. A FHD display is stupid and impractical for most common cases: the rare exception for me is reading textbooks and other small-font paragraphs: in which case, you're using the wrong tool for the task. Get a tablet or the 5.5"+ displays. The only other phone with a similar display is the Note 2 and that phone completely contradicts what makes the Moto X attractive.
However though, food for thought, anyone looking for a backup phone should consider a Note 2.

I've never had a 1080p screen but I can't imagine anything being noticeably sharper than the Moto X's. That aside, the vast majority of the time you're not thinking about whether or not you can see traces of pixels when staring at the thing, you're just using it to actually do things and in that context brightness, color balance/saturation, and contrast are what you actually notice. All of those are great on the Moto, now every LCD screen I see looks washed-out to me!
Until batteries get a whole lot better, I don't see the point in 1080p for anything less than a 5" screen. It's like buying a 40" 4K TV... Just an opinion of course!

These resolution comparisons on screens smaller than five inches are getting ridiculous. 720 or 1080 really makes no difference on a screen this small. Unless you look at your phone with a magnifying glass or microscope the human eye can't really tell the difference. Backlight makes a bigger difference than anything. I think the 720p screen is a big part of the reason the device is as snappy as it is, as well as good on battery. I can tell the difference between 720p and 1080p but it's tough without a side-by-side. The resolution is perfect IMO.

Of course I'm talking about the Moto x 3rd Gen.I honestly can't wait. I feel like a little kid waiting to open Christmas presents. I seen the leaked render of this device just a little bit ago, It looks great. The picture was pixelated and blurry but you could see the jest of it. The camera, flash and dimple are all lined up in this rounded-rectangle strip on metal on the back. It looks very premium, the front of the phone just simply looks like a streamlined flat AMOLED panel with 2 front facing speakers (at least that's what is seems to be). I guarantee all Moto users are going to be proud of this device. like come 'on 4GB on RAM! and look at that chipset and pixel density. This is going to be a gift from the higher up.

Same. I am more intrigued with the Nexus because of Google I/O:
1. I am certain a fingerprint scanner will be included
2. USB type C. Now that is something to be happy about
3. OIS and all that camera stuff will be in the next Nexus
4. Wireless charging & fast charging. Both of best worlds
5. Having the latest Android OS version. Android M is going to be awesome, I want it. I will consider buying a Nexus this year if rumors of an LG one is correct (or Huawei), depending on price
6. A lot of the specs will be the same as the first post

not enough of an upgrade to get me to buy day one. maybe after the price drop.

Yes, I'm also interested in what Nexus is going to put out this year. I know that's its going to have an outstanding spec sheet, It always does. That fingerprint scanner would be nice, unfortunely i don't think the new Moto X will have it but you never know. It's more than likely that the new Moto X will be guaranteed updates after it's intial release. Hopefully Motorola improves the camera, OIS would be great and they need to work on getting consietent high quality photos. Image processing needs to be improved also. I tryed the Nexus 6 for about a month and it was perfectly fine in preformance but it's too large. I think the next Nexus smartphone should have a 5.5 inch display at most. Wireless charging & fast charging im sure will be in the new Moto X. LG or Huawei huh? Both are great cmpanies. LG with its G4 and Huawei with its P8. My vote is on Huawei. I also seen the new Moto G rumored specs. 2GB of RAM, larger battery, higher MP count, 16GB base model, same 5 inch screen but in 1080p this time around, Better chipset and more. It amazes me how fast technology is evolving, if the new Moto G would of came out last year it could sure contend with some flagship smartphones.

The only thing that stands out for me is the 1080p video capture at 120fps (slow mo). Not really enough for me to want the new Moto X. I'll most likely wait for the price to be dropped before biting the bullet.
In regards to the new Nexus, I'll never buy a Nexus phone again after owning the Nexus 4 and 5 - awfully bad call quality issues and a lack of acknowledgement from Google (poor support). Nexus 6 was just stupid with it's almost 6" display lol. Probably get laughed at trying to hold that thing against my ear!! Anyway I don't think I can do without Moto Voice, it's too good!

Yeah, me too. The only reason I jumped to Moto X 2014 is because of Nexus 6 size. Previously I've always used the Nexus line.

Yeah, the 1080p 120fps slow mo will be great im sure of it. The specs that didn't exaclty stand out but were a little unexpected were the battery life & the RAM. I wasn't expeting such a leep in battery capacity to go from 2300 to 3280 mAh is awesome, that almost a 1000 mAh gain. I was expecting something in the ballpark between 2600-2900 mAh which is still good depending on the display and hardware. I was expecting 3GB of RAM for some reason. Maybe it's becuase the Moto X has always seemed to be 1GB of RAM lower than other flagships that came out during the same time. I guess Motorola is stepping up. As far as the expected changes and improvements i knew that Motorola would improve: the camera, chipset and display resolution. It's kinda unfortunate that the new Moto X will most likely not have expandable storage but at least the got rid of the 16GB variant. I am also gonna wait for a price drop, maybe around christmas or so and yes Moto Voice is beyond helpful, i love it. I think that's the dominant reason why i would choose the Moto X 2014 over the Nexus 6, well that and size of course.

I really hope that the MotoX 3rd Gen will have two models, one as large as the Nexus 6 or MotoX Pro (China). I really loved the MotoX and Nexus 6 and own both, but the Nexus 6 without Moto Display is disappointing. I've considered buying one from China, but I don't know if Google services can be installed afterwards. Anyhow, Motorola is about to grace us with a new device so its smarter to wait it out.
If any if these rumors are true, I'll be a happy camper.

Oh I forgot about the bigger battery. That'll be my other reason to want to switch but not straight away, probably when the price drops.
I don't really care about 4GB RAM at all. I think 2GB is more than enough for what most people would do on a smartphone. I've never ever felt like the RAM capacity is slowing me down or anything.

I would argue that the X right now is still a better deal than the 2015 G, given that it has the faster (though older) processor, slightly older but far less noisy camera and Moto Voice, as well as a metal frame. Just be sure that Android updates beyond Marshmallow aren't top priority.

If you're upgrading from the Nexus 5, I'd advise you actually wait for something better, or spend a bit more and get the 5X. You're getting a similar screen (same res, roughly same size, but now AMOLED), a slightly more powerful chip (but that's honestly splitting hairs) and a just as inconsistent camera. The only real upgrades here are the build and slightly newer stuff inside, and unless that's worth $199 to you, then wait.
This is more for people who are upgrading from anything older than 2013 (flagship) or 2014 (midrange), where the difference is going to jump. But from a nexus 5 it's not going to be significant enough in my opinion.

Actually, from what I've read so far, the 5X camera is actually pretty good it seems. So I agree. Spend a little more and get the 5X. Plus the big advantage... Updates.

From Moto x pure to the N5x

I have to add that I just came from motorolas version of a nexus being the Moto x pure and I immediately had way more interest when i got my hands on the N5x.
Regardless of the Moto x specs 21mp cam and ram .... I get better pic quality by far even with only a 12.2 mp camera better keyboard response better feel with screen size more unique development and mods available and easier root etc...
Anyone agree coming from a Moto x ?

I was switching the devices too and I'm far more "impressed" by the N5x, than I was when I unboxed my Moto X Style/Pure. Impressive Cam, very light, perfect size (at least for me), the battery stats (getting up to 6 SoT with Custom Kernel and deactivated encryption). I'm pretty happy with the switch and I'm not regretting it one bit.

Moto Display is much better than ambient display. It's one killer feature for Moto.

Switched from moto x pure to N5X 3 week's ago. Was a bit hesitant because of the smaller battery and the 2gb ram on it. Somehow everything on the N5X feels right... The camera, the fingerprint sensor, the size and weight. I bought the moto x thinking I was done with rooting and modding my phone's but I was wrong. I enjoy playing with it too much and the dev support on the moto was just not strong enough for me. Indeed moto display does work better but then again...the N5X does have a LED on it. Getting 4 to 5hrs SOT on both phones and no lag so far....I'm really happy I made the switch!

Nexus 5X V Moto X Pure
I was considering between the two and decided to go with the 5X mainly because of the screen size and Nexus branding. Although, I was really on the fence about it because of the Moto X's superior memory (3GB vs 2GB) and video stabilization. In the end I am glad to hear the opinion of someone who has had experience with both #TeamNexus

I also sold my 2015 Moto X Pure Edition for the Nexus 5X. I would have probably kept it if it weren't for the size. Moto Display is better than Ambient Display, but they both suck on LCD screens. All of the Moto features were quite nice and added more value to the phone than most ROM features (IMO). It was near prefect but was too big and heavy for me. I probably wont ever own another "Moto" phone now that Motorola is now dead.

FWIW, before I got my smart watch I enjoyed a feature on Light Manager that would wake the screen up whenever I got a notification.

I've gone back an forth between both devices a few times and here are my thoughts. Battery life on the moto X is better. The Moto does not have input lag, where it can make the 5x at times very frustrating to use. You can certainly feel the difference that extra gig of ram makes. The nexus has the far superior camera and usability from a size stand point. I love the size and weight of the 5x. For me, in the end it was the moto x. I like the expandable memory and smooth operation of the device. The moto features are also a huge plus for me as I drive a lot in my job. Hope this helps.

What do we really gain?

So with the new google and Samsung phone out. What do I really gain to switch. I unlocked my boot loader, I can load just anything right? So what do I really gain to upgrade? I just don't see that much difference. Am I missing something? This phone has really been great. I bought the 64 gig one. Never had any problem with it. I have never had a phone this long, almost 2 years now. I bought this phone the day it came out. I have read all the spec and just don't see much difference right now. Updates? Am I going to be paying 850 for updates? A little better camera?

Nothing. In the end its just a phone. I love my droid turbo 64 gig with a almost 2 day battery. Camera needs some work but takes decent pictures. Unlocked bootloader and running RR ROM so I'm set with this phone until development ends on XDA.

I know the battery and screen is a downgrade but who honestly needs a 2k screen? That's just wasted gpu power on a screen this small.

Once I went 1440p I can't go back, especially 1440p AMOLED. And I don't like very large screens like the Moto Nexus 6. This was "my" Nexus 6.
The ZTE Axon 7 right now for $400 slaps the new Pixel XL silly. It matches or beats almost every spec, except for possibly the camera. (And the camera isn't' worth an extra $400!) Google should be ashamed of themselves.
I'm keeping this phone at least another year.

See I've always been annoyed by the thought of the battery power wasted by this screen.... No idea how hard the gpu hits it. But it's definitely finer than I'm worried about

ZTE is a brand that scares me. They released some trash early on.
Given the dev work and octocore processor I'd still go moto g4

All you can gain is a bigger screen and in some scenario's (not all!) a better camera. Furtheron you are more likely to downgrade rather than upgrade.
You have your bootloader unlocked so you are able to flash MM as stock (brazillian by iWoody) or Cyanogenmod or any other custom kernel and ROM. You can do all the modifications possible on a MM device, your Droid has all the sensors (are there even sensors added on newer devices besides OIS?)
You can increase batterylife with greenify and dark themes (which I prefer in general), and keep the phone up a solid two and a half days regular use
In case the camera is an issue I suggest you to go for CameraFX zoom, since this has a function to measure stability before taking the shot. To me, this comes most close to reach ois possible for the Droid and have some better quality on my photos. Also, you have the option to store RAW photos, which also increases the quality. I have a preview attached to this post
I bought myself a VR gear and along with the 2k screen it is performing very well as virtual reality. I would not quickly settle for 1080p again in VR world.

Fingerprint sensor. External SD card. Other than that, nothing.

Stereo speakers + rear camera OIS added to this phone would make it prefect. Basically all the specs the Moto Nexus 6 had, just in a more reasonable size. Motorola almost made it perfect -- releasing the "Nexus 6" Google should have... Motorola just left off stereo speakers and rear camera OIS, for unknown reasons.

To bad phones can't be PC. Having the ability to swap out certain components to make it better.

btw for you opinion what is the best custom rom for droid turbo? i´m thinking of unlocking bootloader and install one of them, not that i´m unhappy with the 5.1.1. stock, but it hasn´t my language, Portuguese PT not br
and btw custom rom will gain more battery?
