Aside from the advantage of having an unlockable boot loader, is it just me or does the turbo seem like a better deal.
The turbo has a larger battery, more dense screen, higher MP camera along with the moto's value added features and a red color option(an advantage for me).
If the nexus had been in the 400$ range I would have been thrilled to get one, but for 649 it's going to be competing with the turbo and it doesn't seem like its much competition.
I warranty exchanged my original maxx and got a device that couldn't be unlocked, I really only miss viper4android.
Opinions?

Well, after seeing the beast machine Google did with Moto, it really surprised me that they go that far with 6'' inch screen at 2k res and 32 & 64 gb options, Dual speakers and a big battery, 3220mah.
But, even seeing that great specs the droid turbo looks more appealing to me for this reasons:
21 Megapixels Camera
5.2 inch screen (its big but not massive like 5.5 or 6'')
Motorola Software (google now, active display)
Red color (huge selling point for me)
Super Battery (if nexus 6 got 3220 with 6 inch, just imagine 3900 on a 5.2'' device, should last 48 hours with heavy use, or 3 days of normal use. just imagine that.)
Motorola Software support, we will probably get Android 5.1 or 5.2 for sure
Price point, the nexus 6 will be 650 for 32gb version and droid turbo will be around 650 or 700 and its better than nexus 6.
bad things:
its almost sure thing Droid turbo will have locked bootloader
no root
nexus gets 2 years of support
Optional:
seeing that nexus 6 and droid turbo share same processor maybe finding root for turbo is not gonna be so hard, but that just maybe
I agree but the battery is the biggest disappointment for me. The phone is bigger but has a much smaller battery. How is that a smart idea. Price I don't care about as long as I can unlock the boot loader. In the end its just to big for me. I'm going turbo hope they make a Dev edition or there is some other way to unlock.

You mean 48hours
But I think 3Ah is the big energy for a smartphone. What's the difference 3200 or 3900?

Wouldn't hold my breath on it brother. I'm going Nexus purely for the unlockable BL. Although I'm curious as to whether or not active display will come on it.
I don't think so nexus is pure android. However you should be able to port it over like with snake venom. Its almost identical hardware. I am also waiting to see if the Chinese middle man will be able to unlock these moto phones. If he can I am all over the turbo.

I wonder if I could put the turbo battery into the shamu or camera modual probably can... Wanna see XDA unboxing of both
I'll probably go nexus as long as it has active display. As much as I hate how big the size is, I'm not gonna get stuck with a Verizon exclusive again
Besides, I could carrier hop like nobodies business with all the radio bands that thing has

That may be possible having the same hardware. And since moto moved these from system integrated to apps in the play store. So it is conceivable that a nexus 6 owner could implement these features.

It has "Ambient Display" which is a near copy of Moto Display... so, while Matt is correct in his terminology, it's a bit misleading. The Nexus most certainly will have something similar.

All that confirms is that it won't come with MOTO-BRANDED features... but to say it won't have them at all is hogwash. It will contain Google's "Ambient Display", which is their baked-in flavor of Moto Display AND will have the ability to say "OK Google" with the device off. What other features that you think are Moto-specific do you want? Moto Connect is just a fancy "Find My Phone" which Android already has as well with the Android Device Manager.
Don't get off the Nexus horse just yet... you'll be surprised how many "Moto" features are now part of Lollipop. Technically and terminologically speaking, they aren't true "Moto" apps...so they aren't wrong in saying so.

and why? I like the simple design, hopefully this 4.7" screen will be more readable than the htc one 4.7" screen. I'm thinking so? But if I get the device I'll be coming from an sgs4. Kinda tired of touchjizz and always had a softspot for motorola, and miss my nexus 4 experience minus the horrible battery life. I hope we can unlock the bootloader on this device with no issues :0
I'm using an SGS4 as well and have always loved Moto handsets. I'm sure the Moto X is going to be great. Nothing beats Moto radios...

That would be great, the question is when? And why would they not release at the same time as carriers. I mean I'm guessing they dont want to interfere with carrier sales but that can also backfire as people can just wait for the google version? More choices for different types of users.

I thought I would be a shoe in for the SGS4, but the X has really intrigued me. That and I just end up running CM 10.X on the galaxy, so why not start out with a stockish experience? I do enjoy ROMing and modding, so not sure how that will work out if I get it thru Verizon on contract. If unlocking the bootloader is definitely a no-go, then I could wait for developer edition. Its CPU is nothing to write home about. The dual core swift is about on par with the MSM8960 krait CPU. I doubt that the A7 CPU will surpass the SD800, but the OS is less demanding and the GPU will be awesome, although Samsung is starting to use imagination technologies GPUs again, which is good.

Based on all the reviews I have read, there hasn't been anything you would normally do with a phone that the MotoX cannot do and is very responsive. That's all you really can ask for. The Adreno 320 GPU is the same as what's in the htc one and sgs4, so gaming isn't an issue either.

My Verizon GS3 (Owned 2) wireless radio > RAZR Maxx + Razr HD. Better Wi-Fi range & connection as well.
To answer the thread, no. I will not be getting the Moto X. Development has always been weak for Motorola phones. I've owned 2 stated above. My wife use to own the Motorola Photon on Sprint. I know Motorola phones well enough lol. Not blaming developers. It's Motorola's security and locking everything down. Plus I don't like Motorola's camera quality for pictures and videos.
I'm now waiting to see what the next gen Nexus will bring. After owning a Nexus 7 (2013), I enjoy it too much I now want that experience on my phone also. Still love my S3 but when my contract is up, time to move on.

My initial reaction was shock and dismay, specifically because I really thought Google was helping to turn around Motorola. But the truth is that Lenovo does turn out quality products too. My past three laptops have all been Thinkpads and my latest one, a 2013 T430, is a tank that takes a licking but keeps on ticking. One can only hope that Lenovo will let Motorola continue its trend for quality phones like the X.

Anyway on giving it another thought Motorola is not based on ideas on one or a few people (unlike some fruity companies) Its work on collective thinking and am sure Lenovo has a track record of buying failing businesses and converting them into profits (The ibm thinkpad made them the No.1 pc manufacturer in the world).....I am sure they are gonna be the best thing for motorola Provided they ditch their own smartphone line
The more I've thought about it, the more I think this will be okay. Google gets bored easily, and I liken them to a kid in a candy store, hyped up on sugar and won't stop touching things. They like to be the first to something, but beyond that they have mediocre, beta products.

For me, absolutely. I went as far as to buy a second Dev edition in case I ever break mine. If you're a power user, it might not be for you because of the dual core or lower clock speed. Also if you're a bit of a flashaholic, not much development going on. However most of us who own the device think things like active display and touchless controls outweigh the downsides (by miles in my opinion). No one can tell you if you'll like the phone, I suggest getting your hands on one to see if you even like these features before you make a decision.

Personally, i used to be a flashaholic, but since nov/dec, ive really settled on the google edition stock htc one rom, which is pretty close to the moto x rom if im correct; so the lack of develepment, while dissapointing, is not reason for me to shy away. I have played with a moto x a couple months ago at my local costco, but thats not as good as having one untethered and really able to mess around with. The idea of the wood backs, active notifications, insane battery life, supreme radio performance, and small form factor are the factors that pull me to it. Everyone who has/had one seems to say they love it, and im betting i really would too.

If you want all of Samsung's bloat and gimmicky features plus Samsung Knox just to get the "better specs" I'd say go for the gs5. If you look at the at&t note 3 forums especially the development section they don't have much development going on either because of Samsung knox. You want a great phone that's has everyday usefulness go moto x but don't get the carrier branded moto x get the Dev edition. But if you can wait several months the moto x2 might be out.
MOTO X SLAPPED
the moto x is truly wonderful, but that doesn't mean it couldn't be better.
i would personally wait for the moto x 2.
or the Z2 for that matter, if it does make it to ATT.
the special features are really nice, but i don't feel like its enough of an upgrade over the HTC one.
the camera is pretty mediocre, and so is the screen. the speakers obviously would not be as impressive.
battery would be about the same.
the Z2 on the other hand would improve in many aspects over the One.
so i would wait for the new moto x so you get your moneys worth instead of side-stepping, which might have you dissapointed with your X the minute the new X comes out.
I should also note that i would only really have it for 6 monthsish. I also have an upgrade in december, so yeah.
Sent from my HTC One using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
well then if you want to try something new go for the moto x, if you really want an all out upgrade, as much as i'm not really interested in the device, the S5 is a better upgrade.
the only thing the moto x has going for it against the S5 is the form factor and the active display honestly (which is pretty awesome but still feasible on the S5 which also has a LED display).
I love the moto x but given your choice i would probably opt for the galaxy 5 and wait for december for the new motorola, whatever it will be.
the galaxy will have a much better camera, performance, battery, display, micro sd slot, removable battery, water and dust protection, some nice features, and as far as i can tell will also have always listening mode (which was available in the note 3, so should be on the S5)
probably have better wifi reception and connectivity also.
the only downside would be the touchwiz rom, which has honestly gotten much better than the days of the S2 (i still don't like it though).
however, this is going to probably be the most popular android phone and thus will have the largest dev community, you can expect to have an AOSP rom in no time to solve that issue.
I really like both of my moto x's. I don't flash roms with the moto x like I have with other phones in the past. I feel like it is well balanced for us who like to mod and also for normal users. My wife has the regular white moto x coming from a iphone 4s and she loves it. Personally I would save the upgrade, and buy a barely used moto x on swappa.

Here is a link to the at&t moto x on swappa. I've seen good deals on there.

well then if you want to try something new go for the moto x, if you really want an all out upgrade, as much as i'm not really interested in the device, the S5 is a better upgrade.
the only thing the moto x has going for it against the S5 is the form factor and the active display honestly (which is pretty awesome but still feasible on the S5 which also has a LED display).

This is probably one of the best responses i could have read. Everybody mentions the new moto phone, but is that even confirmed? And i had an S3 that i modded the hell out of, but i was never really thrilled with it. Its a very important choice, but its nice to see such a good review like this. I promise to keep this all in mind as i make my choice in the next 2 months. thank you sir!

For those who made custom Moto X's, has any gotten the wood backs/ does anyone know how well they stand up to heat? (Up to 110°F and down to 40°F) Does the back warp or does it stay solid in its form factor?

My ebony back looks great. Been rolling naked even.

How does it stand up to heat changes? Any warping?

Nope. Hardly a scratch though I use a leather pouch. Hardly heats up though. Only when playing games.

I can't speak for the X, but the Maxx is wonderful. I get like 8+ hours of screen on regularly over about 36 hours. I wish it had an IR blaster, but it's not a deal breaker. It's smoother than my S4 is. Especially when updating apps. The s4 will lag while doing that but the Maxx doesn't. Just my 0.02

The s5 may be difficult to root I'm guessing and development may be quiet. I'd get an unlockable x personally.
The s5 will be marginally better than the s4 and has touchwiz. Ewwww.
Plus the x can be got just over 300, the s5 will be 700+. Notttttt worth the price difference.
IMO.
I'll add this....Samsung, aside from camera, will never match the quality of the moto x.

The GSM/T-Mobile version -- Model # 1053 -- is also a attractive option. Its sim unlocked / unbranded / no bloatware and, unlike the developer edition, it can use the Moto Maker design options. I had both an AT&T version and the GSM version, and ended up selling the AT&T phone. The GSM received the 4.4.2 update weeks ago, but still waiting for the AT&T phone update. Can also tether on AT&T without any special AT&T plan.

Yeah know 2.0 might a deal breaker for some people. Helluva an upgrade for peeps coming from s3. Hardly an upgrade from s4. Does seem like it is highest quality galaxy s so far. The camera so far looms great in low light but can't vouche for it til consumers get it. Still kind of disappointing though. It better get spectacular battery life or something.

Totally agree I think the One still has good specs which will last me a good while. Plus as the one has been out for 15 months there will be more mod support for it. Only thing I would like is OIS and laser auto but for my usage its a niggle rather than a problem. Looking forward to COS12.1 and Oxygen v2 though. Probably will flash Cyanogenmod later down the line though.
The Moto X Style looks like it might be a better phone than the Oneplus 2 to me, but neither are a big enough leap to have me pining for a new phone. I'll be sticking with the OPO for at least another year, and I can even envision stretching it into 2017 unless there's a really compelling leap in tech. To me we're at the point where these incremental updates really aren't doing much.
If they buy back my OPO, then I can move to OP2.

Negative captain, staying on one plus one
Not much of a price difference and I have a stupid obsession of buying things I don't need, I'll sell my opo unscratched un dropped for as much as I can and hope for the best. I have issues...

The missing NFC is a big factor in my decision.... so NO ...staying put with the oneplusone

Im not!No Cyanogen No Love...No NFC, Ugly design...
I RSVP'd attendance to the event here in Paris.. My wife said I could buy it if I like it, but really, even after getting to see it in person tomorrow I doubt I get it.. It falls short so far to me, plus I rather like this community.. Who knows how long I'll wait to flash anything custom..
I'll report back after caressing the screen of the 2..

Unless there's huge hardware improvements that rumors haven't been release I will stay with my OPO

I am if i get an invite before i'm 75 years old... New toys, got to have NEW TOYS !
Nopes! There's no point at all to upgrade to OP2 from OPO considering it's just a refreshed version, nothing major is introduced. Instead, they stripped down some features. OPO is still performing amazingly well and the dev support is just awesome.
i will and of course i'll keep my ONE as well while the nexus 5 goes to my grand son. easy as that.
I unlock my Lastpass using NFC so I will definitely not buy it UNLESS I Lastpass will work with the fingerprint scanner of the OP2.
If the new nexus disappoints or is too high a price for the hardware then I might as well.
NFC I never use and I charge my phone overnight anyway. I'll be giving my one to my dad if that happens
Edit: you know what probably not since its heavier and thicker. I really don't like that aspect mostly the thicker part. Since there some metal I expect it heavier anyway

No way lol. I'm getting one of the new Nexus phones most probably. Then jump to the OP3.
