We've got a lot of new users appear on here lately, it looks like in search of updated roms for the x1.
PLEASE IF YOU ARE NEW TO THIS THEN DO NOT FLASH A ROM
without
A) reading
B) reading some more
C) reading even more!
All the roms should come through the SE Update Service, please use that as it is a simpler method and if something goes wrong, then you can go to SE to complain..
Please use the search if you have a problem, if you don't find what you want the first time, then search again, maybe try searching around the subject.
There's a very very good chance that the question has already been answered several times!
If you can't find the answer then flick through the older pages on the thread, if it's something to do with the operation of the X1 then there's a good chance it's in the oldest pages of the forum.
Experienced members get upset by people starting new threads with the same moans or questions because it really clogs up the great search system with all manner of wasted threads. If there's an existing thread than use that please! If the questions already been asked don't ask it again!
This forum is not a SE support forum, no-one (that will admit to it anyway) is from SE so if you have issues with them why not raise it with them?
If you want to know how you X1 does various stuff try one of the operators online guides.
If you flash a custom rom or another rom obtained from here, despite being warned not too. DO NOT go running off to MS or SE complaining that it's all gone wrong, they
A) won't likely listen
B)won't like us very much
Ta.
You should keep this on the very first ROMS subforum page fards
I know It's already written everywhere... old problem... but many people falls in parachute here, landing directly inside the ROMs post from external links. XDA DEVS is da bomb
And no newbies seem to read anything but exclusively what they are looking for

Hmmm...a rather sweeping generalisation methinks...
I'm a noob here, I'll admit that. However, I'm a board Admin elsewhere in cyberspace so I know exactly where you're coming from. I've done my time reading, understanding, occasionally asking relevant questions in the relevant places, and trying to help out where I might have some answers.
Your advice is spot on, and anyone who is inexperienced should tread slowly and carefully. There is all the time in the world to learn how to get it right, but it takes very little time to totally stuff things up.
"Use the search, Luke"
Instead of telling new guys to read, you could've put the same effort into and making a nice thread for them instead.
Maybe a list on where to start reading and so on!
This thread has no meaning whatsoever. New guys will probably just read first lines skip it and ask a question.
And remember we have all been there, not knowing how to flash etc.
Also searching can be a very time consuming thing to do, and asking and getting an answer is often way faster.
this thread doesnt make sense without any links to where to read...
This forum is where you read. it is a development forum, not a help forum!
you read the first thread that the moderators try to get EVERY NEW USER to read, this was a gentle reminder to get people to do just that.
People are not here to act as customer service for people who are too lazy to use the search facility on this site.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=681487&postcount=1
try that and the one below for starters.

A perfect example of not reading. The purpose of this thread is not to reference, it's to inform.

Searching is quite time consuming but you have no idea what kind of information is in this treasure chest. U accidentally stumble on to some great stuff.

and unfortunately it gets harder the more threads we get asking exactly the same thing over and over again.. ;P
Yea that is true. I was searching PIE6 and i ran across about 13-14 threads of the same question. i was on like page 3 or 4 of the search before i got the right hit.
maybe xda-newbies.com should be registered as a none development and referance site? lol

which reminds me the pie8 files that sun_dream posted in his BA 6.5 thread work, when copied over on itjes 6.5 (it's still pie6 core I think. but a bit snappier).
How about a period of not being able to post when registering ?, a day or three would give new members with their questions a little time to cool down and search/read for the answers which will usually be found here somewhere.
Just an idea.

I actually think that's not a bad idea, was just suggesting it to a couple of other members. Only drawback I think is that it couldn't be restricted to one sub forum such as the x1 from my experiences with vbulletin..
So it would restrict some of the truly amazing first posts that have come from some of the great genii?? on this site..
Alternatively we could have another Sub-forum, in the X1, with for newbies to ask the same questions of each other (like a creche) and anyone found straying outside of that forum until they've learnt to search and read would get electrocuted.. or something..
you mean, something like asking a question about an advanced feature, if you have it right then you're allowed to the real forums?
Well to be honest, the only thing a noob should read are the stickies. I learned to flash, edit, modify, type, behave, proof read, error correction, ask nicely, say please thank you cookie i love you, by reading those stickies.
Actually I think it's a good idea to have a sub-forum for the newbies, and then bomb them with the 'READ THE F-WORD STICKIES OR DIE' *going too far here...
Search ?? No thanks

But to search efficient you have to know what to search for, the keywords are important in a search engine. And when you're a newbie those terms might not be known to you. Or you might not understand a lot of them.
And beeing sarcastic about my comment is not helping anyone that is just pure immature.

Lets face it. Most people that come here with questions like "how can I flash my ROM?" just didn't bother to look. And trust me, there's plenty.
The bothersome thing is not that people ask questions, that's normal in a developer environment. What does bother me, and most - if not all - others is that they ask questions they can answer themselves by putting just a wee bit of time into it. Instead, they had rather have other people spend time doing everything for them. I can see where this attitude comes from - it's easier, but you get my point.

If people manage to use a search engine to find this site then they can manage to use a search engine to find the answers to their questions.
Not knowing or being too lazy to be independent enough to search is the real immaturity.

Sounds like you were trying to revert back to stock. I assume the stuff you are talking about is yellow. If so try to use odin again.
The obvious question to me is, did you try Odin again after it failed? Logic would suggest that if Odin failed I'd have to do it again.

It is because of your tar file on odin.it was two small.try re odin ing it with a tar file of 255 mb or something like that.happened to me before too when I was a super noob but fear not you'll eventually become less of a noob too as time passes

Using google first saves you time because its an immediate response, it saves everyone else time having to an a simple question, and it saves our forums from being cluttered. I said nothing rude and I would have answered his question had it not already been answered (which I highlighted with my quote and saying "this"). If you want to respond to my adult advice and response by acting childish, that is your prerogative but I will continue to post help to those who made an effort to get it.
thats i guess meh cool but a simple reply/explaination would have been "flash odin again" instead of repeating the long rant over and over again too. maybe its jus best to leave this place altogether

I believe his point was, however, that before one starts an endeavor that can break a piece of $500 hardware one should generally make sure they understand all of the possible outcomes and how to deal with them which he pointed out that you didn't. He could have said it in a more polite manner but he was correct.
I have ben to this screen when my odin got interupted. Pull the battery for a couple minutes. Hold down the one key on the keyboard and then power on while holding it. This puts you in download mode. Odin back to stock.

It appears I have one thanks or maybe I cant count. More than likely since I dont cry about wanting thanks that could be it. The purpose of a forum is to get help. Regardless if the answer could be found on google the forum would not need to exist. I am on one forum and it is the most mature forum there is. I see question repeated over and over again. Even in this case people still answer it like it was asked the first time. If all forums were like that, forums would be a much better place.

I do not understand why it is difficult to simply search for an answer. If you cannot find the answer, then post and people will help. As I've stated I do very often provide detailed explanations to people even to those who had not searched for the answer however I always add that in the future they should seek out the answer on their own first. His question had been answered and as such I stated that he should try and figure things out on his own. I have never begged for a "Thanks" and I could care less about them but I have spent hours of my time helping others fix issues and there are many people who can attest to that. Leatherneck has done the same, in fact he has even helped me a few times that I can think of in recent history. On the other hand, the only posts I've seen from you are complaints about other users or asking other users for help. The point of these forums is to allow a place for developers to gather and together fix and hack away at new phones and such, not to aid in every little personal disaster. That is why it is a FORUM RULE to search. A rule for which violators can receive infringements or even bans. By telling people to search, I am not telling them to shut up I am showing people how to be an active member of this community and if you cannot grasp that then your place here is very limited.

Recently I've seen more than plenty of people getting pissed at newbies because they ask a commonly asked question.
They don't call them newbies because they know everything I just want you to take it a bit easier on them.

You have some good points! At the same time some of the frustration people have on here is that people or newbies don't use yhe search option.
They go and asked the same question that was asked a page back or so!
The newbies are getting more and more lazy and aren't doing enough research before they ask a question!
I'm not an expert at any of this stuff, but when I got started with all this flashing stuff last year I did my homework are researched everything I could before I did my first flash!
If I had a question or even today when I have a question I make sure I browse the tread to see if I find the answer or use the search option before I go posting it for the 100th time!

The interwebz has always been this way. You should of seen the G1 forums back on the day. I have noticed recently though that this happens when the natives get restless... aka: there are no new Roms or updates to flash and/or ppl check the forums way tooooo much and so it turns into the state we have now.
This will never end just to let you know. PMs and reporting post work wonders.
Know this. It isnt just these threads for this forum.
Its Apart of life and people get very fustrated with it. Case in point I had a guy call me at work and ask me how to work his computer.
Its people like this customer that make my head hurt.
He then proceed's to ask me how to get internet.
I say sir you must call att or timewarner or who ever can provide internet to you.
He then says " cant I just sign up over the internet with a credit card"
I think to myself "how in the hell are you going to sign up for internet over the internet when you do not have internet.
point of this is 1) its funny! 2) I get how you feel I use to get very fustrated with this sight. Some people just do not read or comprehend what we do. Other times I am just as dumb as they are.

I started to search for the newbie's and just post them as answers to people that are new to this.
But if i don't have the time of my life (I have a family too, and i'm damn old for this, lol), then I would just answer but with a courteous and politely tell them to search next time.

LOL, yeah, G1 days was...umm... let's just say, it was 'busy'. Shoot, the Symbian forums in the olden days was the same. People pester me with updates and crap, and making this change, and do that.... Oy.
I agree with All~G1, sometimes there are 'certain users' who can't take a joke, or too serious, or just plain jerk. So those I do report to Mods and it does work wonders...
The problem is that people expect everyone else to take time to help them but don't take anytime to help themselves (ie, searching for a solution before asking for one)
Ill admit I'm a noob to the android bit but to the tech or fourm world but iv learned in my years the google and forum search are your best friends when learnong something new that's how I found this site. However I have noticed that some threads on here may have 1000+ replys and the forum search here as with most boards don't always put you close to the answer you need so and I can see how other noobs who really arnt familuar with forums like this could find it overwhelimg trying to go through that amount of posts

Like any forum, search is your friend. You have a problem? First search and check stickies before asking. Them are the laws of the internets plain and simple. I'm not the most educated when it comes to android, but I try and answer questions the best I can to help out. When I see pages 1,2 and three of general chat all asking for help about kies update to 2.2, I get pissed too.
I think vibrant members are on the nicer side of the spectrum.
I understand using search isn't that hard, but new users may not be familiar to vbulletin forums and search feautures, but yes most of them don't even bother.
i went from stock 2.1 to rooted 2.2 flagship v4 just by using the search button. getting pissed might be going a bit far, but they do deserve a good jerkin!

A little bit but you are right, I don't know why but the Vibrant crowd get REALLY rough and terse...... people need to show some compassion.........we were all newbies at one time........ good post
Search really isn't that hard. I've been flashing roms on here since Bionix 4 for 2.1 and I never did so until I read the stickies and did research. It's sad that they're not used as much as they should be and it's even sadder that in this day and age, searching key phrases for specific information is still comparable to college level calculus for many internet users.
Sent from my Bionix-V powered Samsung Vibrant that I customized by actually using search intelligently and never cluttering threads. Imagine that!
i haven't been around here for so long but i already know how devs and the experienced get so easily pissed at noob questions. i refrain myself from asking questions AT LEAST in dev threads unless it's absolutely necessary and my googling and searching forums wouldn't give me any clues.
i think devs must have been pretty passionate and must have offered to help, but with growing number of noobs-not all noobs- throwing dumb questions, making threads run hundreds of pages, i understand being passionate no longer is possible
Is there a newbie or beginner section? I think I looked at the xda forum a year ago and it just overwhelmed me at one point where I just didn't care about rooting. Then I met the samsung vibrant and it frustrated me to no end where I had to start reading up a little bit.
I previously had an htc vivid that I s-off'd and rom'd alot and before that I had a samsung infuse and I remember roming on the infuse to be pretty easy. So where do i start? I want to install cm10.1 nightly but I just got my phone today and I have no idea how to root or get cwm on it

I bet 90% (or more) of all "Help me!" type posts can be resolved with those few threads. Maybe another 5% need to be directed to another thread or two, and only the last 5% or so actually require more information than what has already been posted. If people would follow the XDA rules, search, and read what is easily available, most of them wouldn't have problems in the first place...much less need to make posts about them time after time. This forum has evolved nicely and people have taken their time to put together guides, solve problems, and create helpful posts. It is a slap in the face of those people when others don't take the time to read the information they made available. I see it all of the time, people saying, "but this is Q&A, I should be allowed to ask questions yadayadayada...). For some reason, to them, Q&A means I don't need to search, read, or learn, I can just ask a question that has been asked 20 times already (usually still on the first page) and people must flock to me with easy answers on silver platters! Of course, that is assuming they even put the question in the Q&A forum to start with. For some reason, they think they are above the rules or they are so special the rules don't apply to them. Q&A (according to XDA) exists to help AFTER someone has already searched and read on their own...not as a substitute for doing so. And saying, "but I searched", when it is obvious that no searching or very little searching was done only makes them a liar as well.
At most, people should only need to be directed to this information (existing threads). If they choose to ignore this help or if they think they are too important to take the time needed to read and learn...too bad. Fortunately, most accept the help and take advantage of the information, others, well I guess they just need to sit around, all butt-hurt, with their bricks.
And to those that get butt-hurt...No, I'm not a Mod and I'm not affiliated with XDA, I just follow the rules that I agreed to when I signed up...just like everyone else is supposed to. DO you?
...and this isn't necessarily directed at the OP, I just happened to say it in this thread.
This is not unique to XDA. People on all forums ask before trying to find the answer. It doesn't matter how much good info is posted, most users want to be spoon fed instead of trying to learn on their own.
Even with power of Google, we see people post " how do I ....." On forums first, when the same query on google will give instant answers.
I can't explain it, but we are all witness to it.

Does not excuse it in the slightest. Anyways I'm happy for the OP choosing the S4 but this is getting quite repetitive and needs to stop :/

+1 to all
A lot of members like Axman have invested many hours in writing great "noob" threads. Very well done and easy to understand. What I never get is why folks invest a lot of money in this phone, and others, and don't want to spend time educating themselves on how to root it and flash roms.

Where have you been? Haven't seen you around in awhile.
Agreed though, getting old. Same issue, different name.

Life, and AOKP has been keeping me quite content but yea long time no see, glad to see familiar faces
Decided I should drop by more to help with these QA threads hahaha
To the OP now, don't think we hate you or anything, it's just you put like NO EFFORT into researching. The QA forum is here to help issues beyond just getting started.

I started those guides thinking that everyone would be talking about flashing roms, whats cool, whats not, and so on, made them so anyone new could even understand, I must have forgotten that people just want to get a phone and start rooting and such, without reading because his buddy said it was cool to root and flash roms, even told him, here go to this site and get roms, and flash them. Then the process starts, a continuous posts of I can't , and it won't questions.
What gets me, you know they are not searching, because the post right above theirs has their problem right in the thread title. Saw one of those yesterday somewhere.
Ka dumb a$s, duh!

Btw .. OP, I am going to apologize for semi hi-jacking your thread. It was wrong. Sorry sir. Seriously.
I think by now the OP has read your Guide, plus others and is now running and enjoying a custom rom--

This! Also I got very intimidated by all the people screaming at me. I did a bunch of research before I asked the question and was still confused hence the question I'm not an xda idiot but the s4 was already very big in modding when I joined whereas the infuse and vivid had just started to get cwm and root when I got them so I grew with the romers I apologize for looking so nooby since reading the first post I now have a auto Loki cwm and root access and am running the Google edition ROM thank you all for the suggestions and links

Glad you got it--
Don't feel bad sometimes we need to vent--nothing personal
I came here in early May from the One S and close to 3.5 years of flashing HTC devices with the advantage of unlocked bootloaders thru fastboot. But, still felt like a noob here--still do--
Odin/Kies/Loki were all new. Esp loki. I have spent hundreds of hours reading probably a couple thousand posts. Still learning. It does take a lot of effort to figure this out for some of us--like me.
But, a good investment as one needs to not only know how but why--to not lose a pricey phone--
Welcome to the S4--Unbelievable Phone--:good:
EDIT: Problem Resolved
Hello, after reading for hours, I now realize that I was wrong. Not totally new to rooting, etc. but this one caught me off guard. I updated to the latest MF3 OTA from ATT.
My problem is I tried to install TWRP from the goo manager, and now the recovery doesn't work on the phone at all. For the longest time it just kept rebooting the phone endlessly, and I could make it get into download mode.
I managed to get the phone to boot up by flashing the stock rom with odin in the bootloader section (did this by accident trying to recover the phone), and then went into download mode, and clicked cancel. It booted up fine.
If I try to enter recovery at all, it goes back into the endless boot cycle till I do some playing around with odin.
How to do I get the normal recovery working again? I would like to factory reset this and sell it for a GPE phone.
Thank you for your time.
Is there a downloadable mf3 ROM out there I can use to flash it with Odin?

There is a method, you'll have to search for it, because I can't find it right now and link you to it.

Both of you should do a lot more reading before you mess with your phones. There are good stickies in the general forum which would be good starting points. If you had read them you might not be posting here now.

Not to be a stickler but it's the same person.
And not to be disrespectful, but the galaxyroot website says installing a custom recovery is fine but it must be rooted first - if not rooted go here - you go here and it shows the mf3 root method. Never said much else about it. I rarely use XDA to ask for information. The post always turns into a flame war with people who are extremely disrespectful. To me this forum is extremely mixed up with post, and other times the information isn't clear. I agree totally that I made the mistake, but I admit to my failure and now I'm trying to learn from it. I'll never understand why the people on this forum and I mean especially this forum love to bash others.

The reason people are annoyed is because people are constantly coming here with little knowledge, ignoring all the useful guides stickied at the top of the forums to try and help these exact same people, then rushing into an advanced procedure without a proper idea of what they're doing. Then they make a brand new thread to ask a question/beg for help, when it's already been answered 100 times, rather than searching for the answer first.
It's not something to get upset about because it's going to keep happening no matter what...but it is laughably annoying.
Anyways, I don't know what website galaxyroot is, but you need to get your info/guides/procedures/research right here at XDA...not at some random website with crappy information. That was your first mistake.

Absolutely!
And I might add...
Asking questions (regardless of how many times they have already been asked) is NOT learning. Learning IS searching and reading available information, no matter how much time it takes, until a person has complete knowledge about their device and what it is they are going to be doing to it. It is called "being responsible for your own actions":. People that keep asking the same questions over and over again are NOT trying to learn anything. They are just trying to get someone else that usually did take the time necessary to learn about their phone to get them out of a situation that they got themselves into while putting a minimum of their own effort into it. Just so they can go back and screw something up again.
People who ask valid questions AFTER they have searched, read, and learned are generally handled in a very friendly manner because they have displayed a willingness to actually learn about what they are doing. I've already said this in several other posts but it comes down to people that do things correctly versus people that are lazy, have a sense of entitlement, or feel as if their time is more valuable than others...it's just that simple.

The funny thing is: often the people who are accused of being mean/rude/unfriendly are people who spend an exceptional amount of time, each and every day, helping people in these forums! It's FREE tech support. You get "mean" when you deserve it and you are not entitled to complain about it, in my opinion.

I agree with that. In my case it was a few hours of researching with no clear answer to me.
The website is galaxys4root.com and it is referenced in this forum quite a bit.

He had like 7 post...I'm not thinking so.
Nevertheless people will ask everyday a question that has already been answered. If somebody is going to call me stupid along with other names I don't want their help, I'll eventually figure it out myself. I was just hoping to significantly speed up the process by asking a question I didn't see asked yet on the forum. (Or if it was I didn't see it and yes I did look)

I'm not quite understanding you. Instead of "checking another forum out to see if we have any solutions as of yet", why didn't you take the time to read what has been posted about it in this forum (as suggested)? People (here) even gave you a screenshot and instructions on how to find the EXACT links that would have helped. Was that not enough? I think you are being difficult just to be difficult...or do you really think that you shouldn't have to take the time to research and learn about something even when the links are handed to you? Maybe you should take a little of YOUR time to read and learn a little bit instead of expecting people to take THEIR time to answer your questions that have already been answered multiple times elsewhere, especially when people are nice enough to show you the way. What is your definition of "help"?
You don't have to answer any of this if you don't want to, I actually rather you didn't.

I'm not even going to fight with you. I'd suggest sticking on topic. Anyways I did thank those that helped so don't complain at me for not reading something you know about.
Nevertheless my recovery is working again now. Something that XDA doesn't have posted on it (at least for the mf3). Maybe I could be more of a nerd and explain things in more detail like I should have. I have been pretty sick these last few weeks. I'm a disabled veteran and have quite a lot of problems. You don't freaking know me. Don't tell me what I'm trying to be. Just because I'm not as familiar with this forum like you doesn't mean I didn't freaking try.
I am TRUELY sorry for the inconvenience I have put you through. I won't ask anymore questions here again. I'll go where I should have in the first place.
P.S. - read ALL my post before you decide to play God and tell me what I am. A post I referee to earlier was deleted so it kinda makes me look like a you know what.
Please don't try to bash me here anymore as I really never meant to offend anyone here. Its just really depressing to me that just because you found something and I didn't I'm the idiot.

Wow - 1 question and 2 pages of beating this poor guy senseless.
No disrespect but you guys/gals with 1000+ posts, try to remember when you where single digit posts.
Some people dont "haunt" this forum day and night and know "common" issues/symptoms and their fixes.
I see lots of threads with what appear to be valid questions and just about all say "this has been covered - do some research".
I hope I never go to a Doctor and say "I dont feel well, my nose is running and feel itchy" and they respond "this has been covered - do some research".
Again no disrespect but WOW!!!!

If you find a doctor who provides around the clock support for free, let me know!
If that doctor posts the answers to most of your ailments right on the door when you walk in with a big READ THIS FIRST sign...and you walk right past it and ask him a question that's on the door, do you think that might get annoying?
Ok, I'm tired of this analogy!
