AOSP Gallery - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Coming from running CM9/10/11 on my s3 and s4, the S5's CM build isn't quite stable yet as its development just previously started.
So, running on touchwiz (modified quite a bit so far to make it as tolerable and lightweight as possible) I find that the touchwiz gallery app is borderline horrible to work with.
The 4.3/4.4 gallery app is fantastic. It's smooth, it makes sense, it arranges all folders/files by data modified properly, has powerful and actually USEFUL editing tools and makes a great photo browser when attaching photos into web pages or other apps.
I know there are alternatives like quickpic, etc, but is there the slightest possibility of getting some AOSP framework merged into touchwiz based roms to get the gallery app to function? Even the "downloads" app (file browser) is fantastic in AOSP and would make touchwiz rom so much more tolerable and useful.

[Q] How to get Sense UI browser from Evo?

I flashed one of the latest cyanogen nightly builds a few days ago on my htc Evo. It is really great. Absolutely fantastic. Honestly I expected more from Gingerbread, but probably it has lots of improvements from inside rather than on UI. Anyway great job by cyanogenmod team.
But now along with Wimax (which the team hasn't implemented yet) I miss one other thing. Sense UI browser in my opinion is so much better than the one that comes with cyanogenmod (I guess it's the Stock browser). For example pinch-to-zoom works better. And I've already got used to it. Actually I use Dolphin HD. But as I understand Dolphin just projects websites through webkit engine, the same engine uses default browser.
So my question is - is it possible to take the browser (or engine, or whatever) from Sense UI and use it on cyanogen?

S2 Ics - Tw Discussion

I've read on other topics people talking about ics on our gs2, so i decided to create a thread to express opinions
instead of spamming other topics hehehe
So if you want to say twiz is fugly or i like it, this is the wright place for you hehehe
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1396647
For the ones that seek aosp feeling in sgs2 folow the link and post there hehehe
If you ask me the ics in the s2 looks like a car wreck hehehe its the ugliest thing i've ever seen XD
(bla bla if you hate so much why did u bought a s2? Because it was the best smartphone on the market, and still is one of the best)
Personally I like touchwiz way more than the LG, Motorolla, and HTC overlays. The launcher is the only thing I don't like about it, and that's easily fixed with launcher pro. I personally think the TW stuff adds some nice functionality without causing speed problems. The only thing I wish touchwiz had is the inline spelling correction... other than that it's fine for me.
Thats true, tw introduced a lot of things that were missing on gb, but for the best sammy phone it would be expected something better in aspect, not a expensive android copy of bada os
Business and Marketin Wise:
You can't sell a phone and later with an update, force people to change their entire experience with their phone.
So yes, ICS will have TW similiar to Gingerbread TW, there is no escape from that.
Luckily, unlike Apple users, we have options to "choose" from any launcher, even allowed to install different types of Android distros...
However, what I would like is similiar experience to AOSP launcher especially in App Drawer like Widgets, slides etc.
Touchwiz is by far the smoothest launcher for the s2.. The modified 4.5 version is even better..
So ill stick to tw.. Other launchers tends to be battery hungry..

Better if samsung provides an option in settings to switch between touchwiz and ics launchers. Default being tw will not change the end user experience drastically.

Unfortunately thats not gonna happen, but we have the option to install a custom ics launcher like nova launcher or trebuchet, and enjoy ics but the framework of samsung will be there =(

You see the problem is that any other UI on top of vanilla android is just a wrapper. At an expense. Sense, Motoblur, Tw all consume extra resources. I hear you say, "but our phones have monster resources". True, although unless the interface is offering extra functionality compared to stock, why use a wrapper?
After all the current iteration of android; ICS has proven that as an OS, android has matured in functionality, UX and eye candy. The only reason I use Tw on my phone is cause it enables video calling via the phone, which I hardly every use. Why should I be strongly coupled to Tw just cause I can not get that functionality form stock? I don't know. Here's hoping video calling get implemented in the stock Phone.apk soon...
A lot of people say Launcher pro and other 3rd part launchers are a smooth as TW but its a false smooth. In order to be smooth they must use a high CPU clock speed which chews up the battery. TW uses the GPU to make it fast and smooth. Underclock your CPU to 500mHz and try LP etc. and compare them to TW. TW will still run smooth but 3rd party launchers will stutter.
Initially I didn't like TouchWiz because of its rather iPhone-ish icons which in my opinion looked pretty bad on the original SGS which had an older version of TouchWiz.
After trying it out myself, though, I've gotten used to it and am starting to like it more than LP because of the ability to resize widgets and so on.
Its inevitable that Sammy would include TW into the update of one of their flagship devices. While I do like the original interface of stock ICS I wouldn't mind having TouchWiz in ICS since it was rather pleasant to use in Gingerbread.
If anyone really hates TouchWiz that badly, an AOSP version would be released by CyanogenMod anyways.
I love touch wiz its so cool ..!!
BUt when it comes to ICS

Indeed, but with ics the ui is hardware accelerated so the advantage of tw is lost
unless they make a real improvement from the leaked alpha to final, its almost certain that ill stick with cm9 when the time comes....

i personally use adw ex and its pretty good no lags, lacks some tw options but have plenty of room for customization, and goes great with ics 1.6 theme by the great vert XD

so i want to install ics launcher and frameworks very badly.......

AOSP all the way for me. I'm looking forward to the necessary code being ripped from the Samsung "release" and being applied to the Nexus build. I've always much preferred to start with the basic AOSP experience and then build from there up.
As for the comments about GPU acceleration, this is not something new that is being brought about by ICS. GPU acceleration is an option that developers can enable in their apps when they build them. It needs nothing more than a value being set to true in a manifest file. The only difference between GB and ICS is that it is on by default in ICS.
You can't say that existing launchers don't use GPU unless you've decompiled the apk and checked. My guess is that any developer worth their salt would know this, and would be using GPU acceleration already.

TW is the only launcher i've tried so far that maintains iOS-like smoothness on full widget/shortcut load over 5 pages. Everything else either skip frames or just plain stutters in this task.
and dont even get me started on the yet unmatched spectrum of hardware video codec support that the TW framework provides.

AOSP ROM's

It's taken me quite sometime to realise how much superior AOSP ROM's are in comparison to Sammy based ROM's, i first flashed Supernexus out of curiosity a few weeks ago and was blown away by it's speed and smoothness far far better than Sammy ROM's in every respect, i then went onto Liquid Jellybean which was even better especially the battery life but with a few minor bugs and no update as of yet but im sure it'll come at some stage, now im on blackbean which uses the same base as Liquid JB and amazing stuff indeed, the speed and smoothness is unrivaled, with more development it will only get better.
Previously ive had superb ROM's like CheckRom, Android Revolution and Omega which are all excellent ROM's in their own individual way but i doubt ill ever go back to anything that isn't AOSP now unless some serious development happens which i wouldn't be surprised on XDA, so what type of ROM's do people prefer for their Galaxy S3?
Totally agree mate!
Aosp ones are the best...
the only thing i wait is the official jb update so the aosp ones can get sources to built on and also to have the best sammy ones(comparable to aosp since it's jb) ever!
But until then, aosp all the way...
Aokp Liquid and Resurrection for new I use Samy base JB Dragon

I used to have a Captivate and ran only AOSP/CM/AOKP roms. I still have it (use it as an mp3 player) and it's awesome.
No on my i9300, I'm using Omega v11. I tried SuperNexus Build 1 and tried a couple of AOSP based rom. I haven't tried later JB roms because I'm concerned with the memory leaks and lack of tv out and stuff like that. The main difference I found is the camera. The Samsung Camera app is very, very good. It is, flat out, superior to the ICS/JB Camera app. Allshare, FM Radio, TV Out, seem usually to be unsupported on AOSP roms (please correct me if I'm wrong).
I think AOSP (and variants) roms are very good. UI is sleaker and they might be a bit more responsive, but I could appreciate a greater difference when I had a Galaxy S with a half baked Touchwiz on it that with the complete monster the i9300 is with a thought out, 3rd or 4th generation Touchwiz. I still use Nova Launcher, because it looks better to me, but I love Smart Stay, TV out is absurdly useful to play n64 games or so with an emulator and a ps3 controller and again, the camera.
I might go back to AOSP roms. I've been looking for a good theme for stock roms, but haven't found one that actually replicates the feeling. However, functionality wise, I think Samsung's Roms are superior.
Excellent thread....Aosp are very responsive and pretty slick....you can feel the new all the advantages of JB.....but as said by monoespacial, the tricks in TW such as smart stay and others are very useful...it'll will be great if one of our outstanding developers in this forum can bake a Rom based on Aosp JB including all the mentionned tweaks.......excellent forum and wonderful community.....thanks.
I've had two nexus phones so I love aosp, it's android perfection.
In saying that, I've found myself flashing Cm10 or supernexus or liquid because I was sick of tw but after a day or two I get sick of them, I always end up going back to tw roms, especially since the JB leaks, the latest one is near perfection.
Tw JB roms COMPLETELY de-bloated are pretty damn smooth and fast, right now I see no need for aosp roms.
There are too many handy features in the tw roms.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
yeah
they are simple and fast, and can install kernel with oveclock
but:
-no wifi tethering (its important to me)
-some FC
-inferior camera app
-without some features, like smart stay, etc ...
I agree!! Those AOSP or AOKP are excellent in terms of speed and smooth-ness. It also somehow integrate to the Google products better. However, they are often very simple interface with nothing much..
Too bad at this moment, there are still bugs that can't be fixed.
In the future, I will just go and get the original Google Nexus phone... You'll get the latest update first hand and there are less bloatware installed
- Charles
Haven't tried other AOSP rom except CM. Can't wait for memory leak fix on CM10
aosp is fast and slick , i love it but there is no denying the fact samsung has improved the quality of their roms for s3..... aosp vs stock is always been a debatable question where aosp always wins. but with galaxy s3 roms samsung has progressed one step higher.
at the end of the day not only the speed that matters but also the releaibility and functionality...
advatanges of aosp:
* Your mobile is fast and clean.
* More room for multitasking with more memory available.
* Wide variety of themes to choose from.
* aokp and derivative of aosp roms are simply amazing
disadvantages:
* it just makes your s3 like any other mobile that runs aosp. No device specific functions.
* Inferior camera.
* you will never get some features .
hoping to see a bug free cmx soon...................................

I agree! I started off my rom flashing on a milestone2 and when I got cm7 on it for the first time, I was in love with it. Then I got a g2x which was stock gb all the way too.
Finally I get this sg3 which was a must have and wow, I have used cm 9,10, every other aosp and aokp rom but stock again has more stuff u can't get from others.
I adw, Nova, launcher pro but I just tw all the way. Suits my needs.
I guess the best thing about it is, we could always change it when need be!

I do like the AOSP / AOKP etc. roms due to their speed, clean base and an intuitive user interface, but some bad things keep me from going to them.
Annoying bugs:
More FC's
Bluetooth works bad with A2DP headphones - choppy sound, interruption etc.
Native USB Tither doesn't work
Overheating compared to stock roms
Some cool things missing from stock roms such as superior camera, video call, smart stay etc.
A lot of minor bugs
Just to respond to some posts (good replies by the way)some people mentioned an inferior camera, a third party camera app like Camera ZoomFX does the job nicely and is one of the best IMO.
I rarely use WiFi tethering although ill probably be using it for 1 week next week while i wait to change broadband providers, there ar emany third party apps that im sure will do the job there.
If some TW features could be implemented into AOSP it would be a win win situation, but with the speed and responsiveness and battery life so good im staying put, much and all as i like ROM's like CheckRom and Android Revolution (2 of the best Sammy based ROM's IMO) but after having AOSP on the dog and bone i couldn't go back.

true, it would be nice to have new touchwiz features in cmx btw whatever the 3rd party app you use you cant get near to the stock camera app which has fetures like hdr, buddy share and more and adding to the arsenal jb update brings "pause while recording" feature to the camera app. BUt sadly its the price we have to pay for the luxury of aosp
Yeah, I was blown away at the speed of AOSP, the one major disadvantage(in my eyes) is the current memory leak present.
I'm sure that in due time, the AOSP camera will get all those features present on the Sammy camera.
I guess the thing I miss the most from the Sammy ROM was the swipe left to message and swipe right to call. Very useful feature IMO.
can someone confirm if USB tethering works on AOSP?

[Q] TouchWiz features on AOSP

I'm looking forward to make my I9505 go full AOSP. TouchWiz bothers me with it's UI, the size of files and also it's awfully slow on my device, somehow. With all AOSP benefits, though, I'll be missing some TouchWiz apps, like the camera with slowmotion recording and S-View cover.
Is there any way to get those, or at least a 3rd party equivalent for an AOSP based ROM?
BONUS
What AOSP ROM do you guys recommend me?
Having it be compatible with Viper4Android FX is good. Great if I can use a normal USB connection (like this app does http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2297888) rather then the SD card-corrupter Samsung's MTP.
Can be 4.3 or 4.4 (4.4 preferred, as I want to see what's new)
Those apps wont run native. Maybe some apps are ported, but you have to search for that.
There is no best aosp rom. Just try it out what suits your needs. That question is not allowed here, because every rom has it own benefits and cons, thus "best rom" does not excist.

TouchWiz base with AOSP apps and System?

I remember a few years back a Dev in the HTC forums managed to strip all Sense UI parts from the ROM leaving just the Camera running on the original framework. He then put in all AOSP counterparts including the SystemUI, so everything looked and pretty much was AOSP, but you also got the Sense Camera. I was wondering if anyone had seen anything like that or had any ideas if that could be be accomplished on the S5 as I love the S5 Camera and battery life but prefer the AOSP apps.
I know it could partly be achieved with debloating and theming, but wonder if there was a cleaner way of doing it?
Would like to see something happen on this front. I allways custom after unboxing and now realising im missing quite a bit without original stock cam.
