S4 burnt while charging.. - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

S4 burned while it was charging via cable to wall outlet. Cable and charger came with the box and I found out in the morning that the battery didn't charge and there was a burning smell. Since my T-mobile warranty was over (1yr) I called Samsung and got a 1 time free repair on my current device.
Sucks that I wont receive a replacement, considering everything that happened was out of my control and was due to Samsung's equipment. Didn't know that this was pretty common as I spoke to the T-mobile rep, and definitely put a sour taste in my mouth for Samsung, and my next phone.

Cable plug slot damaged

So I usually sleep with my phone right beside my pillow (super nerd I know), and my bed is pretty high off the ground. The other night, when I woke up, I dropped the phone off my bed while it was still plugged in and now the cable's connection to the phone is not very stable.
I was able to straighten it out a little so that I won't have to hold the cable constantly to charge the phone. However, I think that the connection is too loose for me to simply disregard in my daily uses.
Is there any way I can fix this problem myself or have it repaired without sending the phone to T-mobile? i don't want to deal with the hassle of un-rooting my device and all that bs.
Any help is great, Thanks
That happend to me and I just bought a new usb cable....I thought it was the port the whole time and its was the cable that got damaged even though it looks undamaged....I say go to walmart and plug one of the universal micro usb chargers and see if it holds better that way you confirm if its the phone or cable
This sentence has been slaughtered by swype.......
lol it wasn't THAT bad
Same here. Almost exactly the same except I pushed mine off of the soldering station I was working on.
It is NOT the port on the phone that got damaged, I can BET you on this. It's the cable. Buy 1 or 2 new cables from Amazon and you'll be good as new. I promise. Lol.
Here: http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Repla...UOQI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1294247657&sr=8-1
Roughly $3.50 per cable with the shipping included. They are Samsung originals too. Note that they MAY be shorter than the cable you just broke.
Happy shopping.

My TF doesn't do quick charge anymore..!

So after the weekend FW update for TF, my TF doesn't do any quick charge any more after charging from the AC Adapter...it doesn't have the thunder lightnight charging indication in the battery icon but charging very very slow
Anyone has been losing the quick charge capability after the 7/16 FW OTA update? It seems their attempt to fix the battery-drain doc issue causing other issue of the tablet's battery charing itself!
I'm have my own accidental insurance from Walmart - and I'm getting the replacement (that's $80 accidental damage insurance I paid during the checkout at walmart.com - now I feel I was smart with that choice!)
Anyone if none answers, I'm getting the new or repaired one (probably new one since my current one was "ACCIDENTALLY" dropped in the water totally submerged so I don't think they will be able to fix it at all - that's SMART way to get the new replacement one!
thx you all
Mine stopped being able to quick charge Saturday night. I did not update , running prime. My wall charger will charge, but trickle only, not full power. No charge icons. I have tried factory reset and reseating the prongs in the wall adapter. Im stumped. I dont have a dock so im now gonna have to. All Asus and see what they recommend.
What is quickcharge? Never heard of this...
The transformer will either charge fast, on the provided wall adapter, takes about three hours tops for a full charge or slow trickle charge on usb which can take over twelve hours.
That could be the conspiracy - Asus wants all Asus TF owner to spend additional $150 for their tablet - It's Taiwanese company, they can do anything they want to in US market LOL
Pretend to be the hotfix to fix the battery drain of the tablet while docking to the keyboard dockstation but in the reverese to cause another issue on the tablet alone that it won't be doing quick charge unless plug into the dockstation - I could see it all possibly happen
Asus - you heard that? F U! Ah I still use your product for another 2 years but I will get new one for every 12 months because I have the accidental damage insurance - they will replace me a new one when I want to hahahah!

I really hope you're not serious.
If asus was the devil they would charge $500 for the tablet and another 200 for the dock so "clever" customers would think they're getting a "premium" device like an apple product.
found it why I lost my quick charge - it is because of my charging cable - freaking charging cable!!!! it is broken at the round proprietary connector - in now way to defect the way how the charging cable connect to the tablet but somehow it is degraded and allow only trickle charge
Who cares,,,I'm sending them all back to Walmart to get the replacement one I meant whole unit tablet & power ac, charging cable since I bought my accidental damage insurance....$80/2year - pretty good deal and feel good that I purchased the coverage plan at that time!
thx,
rcjpth
I can't see any sort of damage or wear on my cable. Looks as good as it did out of the box. I still can't quick charge. Trickle does work, i went and bought a dock today at best Buy. The dock works and charges the tablet, however now its dead and the cable wont chage the dock either. so its either the cable is bad somehow or the wall adapter is bad. either way im pissed. ASUS tech support is uselss they too my information and hung up and said they'd call back. There arent ny more chargers in stock anywhere. Im just ****ed unless i want to return it to tiger direct.
Sending the whole thing back and buying something else is the only option in the US since you cannot actually buy the cable anywhere as far as I know. Once the cable is gone, you can't use the tablet.

I don't think the TF or it's dock was every designed to change from a 5 Volt source such as a USB 2.0 port. I have not seen any documentation from Asus giving you that option.

Also impossible. Been over 30 days since buying it at Tiger Direct, they directed me to ASUS support phone number where an Indian Man took my information and hung up on me saying they'd get back to me.

[Q] Help me solve slow charging problems.

Nothing changed hardware or ROM wise as far as I know.
But starting a couple days ago my phone slow drained and died overnight while running hotspot and doing some downloading. This had never happened before.
I'm using the stock cable and stock charger.
I used an app named galaxy charging current to test the charging rate after that...
It will not go over 500mA. At all. Ever. Even worse, it is usually down around 380mA.
Testing with my phone, cable and charger it only pulls up to 500mA.
Using my wife's gs4, my charger and cable, her phone will pull between 1200mA and 1900mA.
Her phone and her cable and charger, 1900mA.
My phone, her charger and cable nets me 480mA to 500mA.
The port on the phone is clean and clear of debris. The cable and charger both have clean connectors.
I am seriously at a loss as what to do. I haven't changed anything on my phone lately.
Any ideas? Is my battery going bad?
Try swapping the batteries between your wife's phone and your phone. See if the problem switches to her phone. The battery in your phone may be failing and in need of replacement.

Thank you. Good suggestion. I'll report back.
Didn't even get that far...
Pulled the back of my phone. Lo, the battery is beginning to swell near the + - area, and in the lower left corner as well. It isn't bad yet , but it is noticeable.
Serial number begins with TH1D.
Not too pleased about this.
I know Samsung replaces the S4 batteries for free but I do not know how to go about getting this done.
I called Sprint 4x because they kept passing the buck around and giving me conflicting answers. Finally one suggested taking the phone in to a Sprint store.
Google search told me I should take it in to a Samsung Experience store.
Does anyone know? Will I be better off taking it to the Sprint where I bought it or to a Samsung store?

I would say the Samsung store, preferably with your receipt. Also doesn't hurt to call them before actually leaving the door. My experience with Sprint is they'll keep passing the buck to the point you wonder if they even support the phone in question.

[Q] Charging wont work

Hey guys, recently went out and got a Note 4, went to a local tech store to sell my basically mint S4. They went through all the testing and we came to the conclusion that the phone wont take a charge. I was confused by this as was charging via the usb cord the day before. Before taking it into the store I obviously Odin flashed the stock firmware, and since then have tried a couple different tar files to no avail.
Has anyone else come across this particular issue? Honestly I am a little pissed as the selling of this device was intended to reduce the ridiculous cost of the Note 4.
The thing that i really dont understand is the usb port works fine when it comes to odin or connecting to a pc in general, it just wont take a charge. For the last year or so, I have not really charged via usb as I purchased a second battery with charger and have basicilly been switching batteries every time one is at about 5% with a full 100% replacement.
HELP PLEASE lol
Thanks
Celkin
Well check your S4 if it can be charged via a computer and the wall outlet.
1. Take the S4 and the S4 USB to micro cable, plug it and charge from the computer.
2. Try charging it from the wall outlet.
If both fail then it your charging port on the S4 may be damaged.
I personally caused water damage to my charging port and for 1 month I did exactly what you are doing.
I found a company that could repair the charging port for $50 (after negotiations) and my phone works like new.
I was also thinking of selling my S4 to the cell phone store for $170 or privately on Kijiji for around $350 or less to offset the cost of me getting a Note 4. But I ended up not getting a Note 4, i'll keep my S4 for another 6 months to a year. I still enjoy it.
How much were you getting from your tech store?
How do you like the Note 4?

Wall chargers ... Sales guy blowing smoke?

When I got my S8+ yesterday the guy was telling me I could only use "1 piece" chargers and Sammy branded preferred. Claimed it was due to some shielding and fuse and that if I used another charger I could potentially harm the battery.
We went back today and the Mrs got the S8 and this guy said nothing ...
We have other fast chargers around the house from other phones that allow us to swap the usb cable part ... do you think it's ok to still use these w the new plug adapter that was in the box with them?

You should be fine. The phone may not charge as fast depending on the charger, but it certainly won't blow up (sorry, had to do it)
Sounds like nonsense to me, 'potentially' and 'harm' sound like salespeople talk. You should be fine.

That's bs. I still have the charger and cable from the V20 I had along with the ones from my last Note 7 and the electronics store I work at let me have the charger and cable from the LG G6 display we put out at work and I use that charger and cable in the car plugged into a small power inverter to charge it in the cat. They are all usb-c cables with adaptive fast charging blocks and all are 2 piece chargers. He was blowing smoke trying to sell you extra accessories.
Sent from my wickedly kewl Galaxy S8 using my fingers. Duh!!!
I'm using this currently. It's Bensun approved for charging the Nexus 6P and the USB C port on it is charging the S8 via fast charging now... I feel like a battery in 2017 should be fine?
