[Q] Considering a Nexus 4, a few questions for long time N4 owners

Considering picking up a Nexus 4 and would love to hear some pros and cons from long time users of the N4 on XDA that have had the phone for months now, and their real-world usage and opinion (like how the performance/battery holds up after x months of use). I also wouldn't mind hearing about comparisons to other phones with regards to performance if other N4 owner have/use other phones, older or new.
Some background info:
I'm coming from a 2010 HTC Windows Phone, so I'll probably be blown away by what a 2012/2013ish phone hardware is like. WP7 on my HTC HD7 still runs very fast/smoothly in the core OS experience, but once you get to 3rd party app load times on startup, it becomes painful. On top of that MS has all but abandoned WP7, and features-wise, its seriously dated and missing key basic but essential features of smartphone OS's, like ahem orientation lock and a more modern mobile web browser, not even 3rd party apps can help there.

Like you said any 2012/13 phone will amaze you from the phone you have now. You might not even notice the differences between all these new phones.
The closest comparison to this phone would be the s3.
nexus 4 slightly outperforms the s3, you would most notice the smoothness between the two. Battery life, they're roughly the same, except if you use your phone a lot... like extensively than the better choice is the s3. Camera is also better on the s3. Storage goes to s3. But I feel the nexus is the more complete phone... I guess you can say less hiccups.
I would probably choose s4 and htc one over nexus though. Haven't played with them yet, but simply because they're newer lol

It may be a dual core vs quad but still, aosp is just fantastic. Battery is pretty good I'd say. It gets through the day, I'll show some pictures. The lack of LTE and storage isn't a big deal to me because all my music is coming from the cloud and HSPA is fast enough. I haven't even switched to the HSPA+ plan yet because lazy. However, it doesn't play music near as loud as my One X through headphones, but they have a mod for that.
Oh and it charges pretty fast.

Nexus all the way. It's been a little less than a month of owning it, and it's great. Everything works like it's supposed to work, custom ROMs are easy to install, and I unlocked the bootloader/rooted it in a little less than an hour.

I got mine since december of the past year, and I love it more than ever, looks amazing, runs smooth, can run any game without lag, it fit my needs.
I must warn you to be careful don't drop it
My sister have an galaxy s3 and honestly the Nexus 4 is at higher level

I have the S3 and Nexus 4 and Whereas I love my S3, the N4 is the better phone all around. The S3 has it's better things like storage, LTE, S Calendar, OMLEAD (sp.) Screen (where black background takes no power but on N4 it does) and the camera. The camera is by far the best. Beats the heck out of N4 so if you take alot of pics, you'll want the S3. The N4 does okay on its camera but is no where near S3. BUT...performance wise, the N4 wins, hands down. ASOP is better in my opinion as some of these custome UI's really take a lot of power, etc. Plus, for $350, you get a highend phone for a midrange price. It's a no brainer in my opinion.

I'm happy with my N4. If you need an unlocked phone, for the price you seriously can't beat it. If price is no issue, I agree with Teo032 and I'd go with S4 or HTC One based on hardware.
The one thing about the N4 I'm still getting used to is the lack of storage size. I STRONGLY suggest getting the 16 GB. I got the 8 and I would totally pay $50 for another 8 gigs. I think it currently comes with a free bumper, if not, get one, they're actually pretty cool and my N4 kept slidding off crap because the screen is so smooth.

Nearing two months here. Upgraded from the LG Optimus 2X, the world's first dual core Android.
I absolutely love my N4. For the price it's a steal. The performance just blows me away (I am running CyanogenMod, not overclocked) compared to my old phone which had s**tty drivers and often had lag spikes even with overclocking.
If you compare the N4 to a stock unrooted Galaxy S4 or HTC One (the two powerhouses of 2013), you will actually find that when exiting apps and going around the home screens, the N4 is faster than either phone, because those two powerhouses have to deal with the overhead of rendering an ugly custom skin that adds no value Of course when actually inside an app those two phones will be the performance kings, but the N4 is no slouch either - it nails pretty much every game I throw at it.
These are the only real reasons to forgo the N4 in favour of something else:
1. You have the $$$ and want better build quality
2. You can't live with only 16 GB of internal storage, non-expandable
3. You like having a removable battery (or at least a removable cover to make accessing the SIM easier)
4. You want officially supported LTE that isn't 1700 Mhz
5. You think 4.7" is too big (a fair reason) and want something more compact.
If none of those points apply to you, then by all means, GET THE NEXUS 4!!! Also as a bonus you can load on a Metro UI skin if you miss WP

It's been like ~2 months now, and as most lads above I can sincerely say that it was the best choice possible at the moment (still is imo). Seeing that I simply agree with most of whats above this post, peformance wise n stuff, ill poke it from another point of view. Being an iphone4 user (jailbroken of course), the very first time I had the chance to fiddle with the nexus4 - it stole my heart completely. Versatility is just beyond any limits and if youre looking for a smart purchase, good performance/price ratio AND quality product - N4 is the best choice possible right now. The reason ive been using an iphone for quite a bit was actually lack of android based quality products (well, apart from a couple of htc's maybe ). It is crucial for me since I hate using a phone that reminds me of a plastic toy. N4 is the perfect solution in this case - official android based product combined with decent materials. You have to keep in mind though - it is a fragile piece of equipment and if you have like slippery hands (lol) or simply drop the phone pretty (too ) often - you must get yourself a case/bumper (i would recommend a piece of screen/back protector as well) cuz it might hurt if it bangs the floor

I have it for a long time and i must say its a nice phone.
You must be aware tho that there are random wifi issues on this phone that will probably be corrected with a system update.
The stock rom is ok and the stock google kernel uses the perf. branch so do not expect great battery life on stock even when the phone's idle.
A protective case is required or you will screw the back glass easily.
Photosphere is a nice feature included on the phone.
Phone overheats easily

But its a great phone and im happy with it. Nothing would beat the galaxy s2 i had lol

Ordered mine on day one and received it the following week. I came from an iPhone.
I have had no issues other than Android itself. Some of it is half baked, and fixes can be non-existent. Battery life is OK if you come to the conclusion that some apps are the main cause of poor battery life on Android... it is a bit of a free for all here. I have seen significant improvement since installing Qualcomm's Battery Guru. I have seen 13.5 hours on battery with 2hr 46min screen time and 50% battery left. While it ain't quite an iPhone, it is more than sufficient.
The phone is very poorly documented and much of how it works is a "discovery by braille" experience. The stock mail client is unusable for business... thankfully I found a better one (AquaMail). The little speaker on the back is useless. I mean USELESS.
If I had it to do over again I don't think I'd do anything differently. The only other phone I would consider at this point is the HTC One (almost twice the price). At $350 I am very comfortable using my phone and not worrying about damaging/losing it. If I toast it it is not that big a deal to replace it (unlike the $600-$800 for some competing phones). It does almost everything well, and the little rough spots are minor. I do miss the accessory/software ecosystem that is iOS, but at this point I think I would miss widgets and the open file system even more.

As far as aging goes, I've had mine for a while and it's stood the test of time. My battery life has only gotten better and better, but that's mostly due to constantly improving custom kernels (I use Faux123's). It plays all the games out there. The only drawback is storage.

I'd wait on the camera reviews. Then I'd try to hold a Nexus 6 and make sure its comfortable...it is also a thick phone. But I doubt I'd leave the G3.

For the size of the phone I think it's good that it has a decent thickness. Also it's really not that thick... It's just not iphone thin (I don't like how thin the iPhone is)

I'm very tempted to take advantage of my Jump and get the Nexus 6. The bigger size, dual front speakers, and stock Android are huge pluses in my book.
However, I fear the Nexus 6 will have a worse camera (despite having a sensor that's technically better than the one in the g3.. trust me, Motorola will find a way to screw this up) and the amoled screen is also a negative for me.
So overall I'll probably keep the g3.. hopefully we'll get Android 5.0 on it sooner than later.

I'd love to have another Nexus (had the 4 and still have the 5 as backup) but this bugger is waaaaay too big for me. I can just about handle the G3 with 1 and a half hand

Umm, not for me. If I want to carry something larger than the 5.5 inch screen I already have in the G3 I'll pull out the full sized tablet. If it had the excellent Multi window capabilities that Note 4 does and a stylus I might be more inclined to consider it.
As it is both taller than 6 inches and wider than 3 inches, both were my cutoffs for comfortable to hold in the hand - its simply too big for my hands.
Same prospect as the Iphone 6 Plus really - it's a huge unwieldy phone with no real use scenario that I can see.

After seeing this there's no way I want the nexus 6. I'm happy to wait for handsets with the snapdragon 810 then will be time to upgrade.

Way too big, way too expensive for a nexus. Not this year, i'm afraid.

Spot on, in both counts. Pure android is nice to philosophise about but a good deal of draw of the nexus line was surely price?

There is no circle case and SD card slot with the nexus 6.
But it looks very nice !

It's too big for me. The G3 is the biggest phone I want to deal with.

I am. I like my G3, but I can't wait to no longer own this phone and be back on stock Android.

I feel there is no real advantage for the Nexus 6 other than the Android L.
It's too big, no sd storage, probably inferior camera, probably inferior sound quality and it will be likely that its Amoled display will be inferior as well. One great thing about the G3 and its RGB stripe display is that its effective resolution is higher than the comparable Amoled pentile displays. Some people don't notice it, but I find them to not have the same sharpness.
So far I have not found any phone that I would jump ship for. I had an IPhone 6 Plus for two weeks and I did like it mostly due to the software but I ended up returning it as the call quality and the camera were considerably worse than my G3. I gather I will be passing on the Note 4 because of its bulk, sound quality and pentile display. I'm one of those guys who loves to switch phones all the time but so far nothing this year is the equal of the G3. Maybe G4 next year?

The wife has a Jump to use and I feel like I should use it even though I still like G3. LoL. I like the Note 4 and Nexus 6. I'm pretty sure I can return a phone in 30 days with the discount I have on my account. Will the Nexus 6 be out in 30 days and if so can I return the Note 4 for it?

Been thinking and reading lots... And will probably take the jump as LG will take forever to push out Android L and I love the Android L stock look. Love the G3 but want the L experience unless we see a custom Rom. As I will wait for hands on reviews and pricing for UK.

Nexus 6?
I'm pretty sure I am going to own Nexus 6 but I'm unsure wether or not it will be my everyday phone I've gotten used to big phones and my personal favorite so far is still the note 3. After having seen the reviews of the Note 4 I don't I will buy it. A note 4 ROM for the 3 (which will become available in time) will give me everything I need. The increased specs on the Note 4 don't matter for me as I cant see the difference as an average user.
I'll just go for the nexus 6 because it's going to be my first Nexus device, and I want tot check it out. My everyday phone will swapp between note 3 and g3.

I have had a nexus 4 for almost 2 years and I like it. Even so it has its negative points, especially after all this time. It's not as responsive as it used to be and battery life, which wasn't stellar to begin with, has decayed a lot. With this in mind I have been searching for a good phone to replace it. I was waiting for the Nexus 6 to come out but when it was officially announced that screen size and the price scared me away.
After the announcement I have been searching and comparing a bunch of phones. I was interested on the OnePlus One but the buying process is a pain in the ass. I checked the S5 but then I remembered it had the infamous Touchwiz which I had already (even though in an earlier incarnation) on a Galaxy Ace I had before the N4 and there was also the fact that it is expensive as hell on my carrier. I also checked the HTC One M8 but the camera resolution seems horrible. I have checked the Sony Xperia line but it is as expensive as the S5 in my carrier and also pretty expensive on sites like Amazon. At last I have been comparing between a Nexus 5 and a LG G3. I know they have almost a year between them but I like the fact that the Nexus 5 is cheap and receives fast updates, although I have heard battery life was not improved very much. And, on the G3's side, it is newer, has better hardware and supposedly has a good battery life(I have heard mixed views on this as some say battery is good while others say it is horrible).
So, to sum it up, I would like to know your opinions and would also like to know if you happen to know some other options I haven't considered.

Look at an LG G2. $400 for a new one, under $300 for a used one in good/mint condition. Beefy 3000mAh battery, very competent hardware, big screen in a not-so-big body, and a good amount of development if you want to try different ROMs/kernels. As cheap, or even cheaper, than a Nexus 5, but with a much bigger battery and better camera. With the G3 out, prices have plummeted on the G2, and have made it a veritable bargain.
The G3 is a hell of a phone. The QHD screen might drain the battery a bit more, but on this phone the battery is replaceable, so just buy a spare if you're worried about that. Not much development yet, but if you buy the T-Mobile version or one with an unlocked bootloader it's easy to root and modify with Xposed, which gives you plenty of options to tweak it to your satisfaction.
Regarding the HTC One's camera - it's not great, but it's not bad either. If all you're wanting to do is post pics to Facebook or internet forums, it's perfectly fine, since pictures will be reduced anyway. Where it suffers is in cropped detailed pics, and stuff like sweeping vistas and anything far away. That aside, the One is an awesome device.

My personal choice from what's available right now would definitely be the HTC One M8. If you don't care a huge deal about the camera then there are very few flaws to it at all. The camera on the M8 will definitely be worse in normal light than most other flagships but the pictures it takes are still far better than those from the N4 and in low light the camera performs better than most, not to mention the fact that it has good autofocus and a myriad of extra features which you may or may not find useful but they're still nice to have. Battery life is excellent, the screen is absolutely gorgeous, Sense brings extra features and (arguably) a nicer design than AOSP whilst retaining excellent performance and the phone is just generally far nicer to use than anything else I've tried.

Look for the Huawei Honor 6.
300$, full LTE, 16GB upgradable with microSD, beautiful 5" HD screen... I'm gonna buy this phone in the next week for replacement of my N4.

I went from a Nexus 4 to a HTC One M8 and hated it, hence why I'm back with my Nexus 4. That said, I'm definitely in the minority.

Hello,
My galaxy note 4 started to give me a lot of problems so i decide to search for a new phone.
I cannot spend more than $400 dollars so i was thinking in getting Moto X Pure.
Do you think right now is a good choose or i should look for another one??
For me a key factor is to have the micro sd slot.

I personally think it is a great phone for the price range. It has a micro SD slot. Aside from that I recommend looking around for your options.

I'd go OP3 if you aren't on Verizon.

I wouldn't buy it again. Battery life is really crappy. Go for a nexus 6p or 5x. Hell, for the first time in years I'm actually considering an iPhone again after having this phone. I mean, it's not particularly bad as a phone, it's pretty fast, has microSD, QHD screen, thin bezels, but my god, 2.5 hours of screen-on time has me glued to the charger. I can only make it through a day if I don't use it much.

Also finding battery very good. Just got this phone and came from an lg g4 and find them very similar in battery performance. I would definitely consider a g4 in the uk you can get them on eBay for £150

You must have a lighter usage than us, I also have between 2h30 to 3h30 SOT before it gets below 30% and I charge it.
But all the rest has been a great experience so far, it is just bugging me that I have to plan ahead charging the phone (which is a non-problem if you have access easy access to a wall charger or external battery). If it had removable battery it would be perfect!

I would not buy. I love the styling of the phone but in the US, LenovoMoto has forgotten us. No security updates since February and if you decide to install a custom rom, your warranty is voided. I unlocked my bootloader and my front facing camera failed after having the phone for less than six months. LenovoMoto won't repair it.
For me I need two of three things to buy a phone: unlockable for custom roms, microsd slot, removable battery. The Pure has two of the three but again, since they won't support hardware defects the fact that the phone is unlockable really doesn't matter. I'm on Verizon, which makes it even tougher since they are pretty hostile towards developer phones.

I like this phone alot except for the audio jack. That is the only reason I will be getting something else soon.

The IPS screen is welcomed change, you get more real colors...then those over saturated coloring books you call Samsung, I switched from S7 edge, if that says anything. Moto X Pure is really snappy with Pure Android on it. I was more than happy with this phone from consumer point...that being said....turn back if you want ROMS and Dev support. There are couple Stock ROMs and few custom ROMs...but its dead in alot of the threads and Devs never respond to you. I personally would go with Nexus 6p. I own it and there is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more ROMs and Dev support. Not to mention it has up to date support and it has android N already. Best buy has gd deal on Nexus6p, believe in your price range, but no sd card slot....so its trade off but Nexus has best support for updates n dev community. Gd luck!!! May the Root be with you!

Let's see how good is the change from Samsung (i had s3, s4 and note 4) to Motorola.
The only reason why i didn't buy the Nexus was the external memory slot, for me that's critical.

How is it? I'm considering buying it! I'll be upgrading from a Moto G1

it's a very good phone, the build quality, the screen, the sound (i love it!!) it's a safe buy right now.

Nexus will always get support and I have checked the dev threads and I do developers there helping. I have this running a deoxed/rooted/exposed and I am trying to determine if adding CM or anything else is worth it or not because everything works.
My stereo bluetooth loves this phone because it actually sounds like real music not washed out music from the Note 4.

I love it so far. My only complaint is the battery life. However, the awesome screen, camera, and speakers make up for it. Seriously though, the battery is bad. I get about 3.5 hours of SOT a day max. Coming from an LG G2 where 5 hours was the norm.... well....

The battery is about the only trade off, but with the specs and price range, i don't complain. The turbo charging is great to offset the issue of battery. For me one of the selling points was the radio hardware. Of all the devices my wife and I have owned, only Motorola and Nokia devices have manned to hold signal reliably in weak signal areas.

Will you move to Nexus 2016 soon after its launch?

Used to be YES! But not if the front speakers are gone. Sticking with n6.... Looking at ZTE axon 7 as bootloader is unlocked and twrp plus good hw and cheaper price, good speakers seems worth a better look.

I see moving to a 5.5" screen as a downgrade.

After spending the price of two laptops on my N6 (£549) I expect it to last more than a couple of years. I like new toys, but there's a limit imposed by common sense. Newer processors may give an infinitesimal improvement in performance, which no doubt can be measured by benchmarks, but the N6 is plenty fast enough for me. The screen may not be the best around these days, but every time I watch a video I think "Wow, this is an amazing quality picture", so again, good enough for me.

I'll stay with Nexus 6, it's the best phone I ever had, even if it's not my daily phone because it's too big, it's really wonderfull with big screen, nice resolution (ready for carboards), enought RAM, 25Go is enought for me, nice photos/videos, good stereo sound with front speakers, fast charge... :good: I still love it

The Nexus Marlin and Sailfish will indeed not be true Nexus devices. It has been announced that Google is rebranding the Nexus brand, rumored at the moment to just be called "G"; and it will not feature a stock version of android, rather there will be G-only features built into the ROM. No word of bootloader yet.

Me too, not going to happen as long as there are decent 6" or bigger phones available. It's a pain trying to type messages or emails on such a small screen.

I really want a 64 bit mobile to develop my rom, but the 6P might break if I think about it too hard. So I'll check the new ones, but if they are too expensive here in Europe, and the early reviews are negative, then I'll just keep my N6.

I still love my N6 but I cracked the screen a bit in the corner.
I also want to finally make the move to Project Fi so I'm hoping for a bundle deal.

If what is in the leaks is true. I rather buy note 7. Back design too ugly for me.

There are a lot of reasons why people buy a Nexus device. The 2 most common reasons I always see is either the simplicity of the device (dare I say, bare bones of what a phone should do/have) and stock skin of Android or on the other side, the complex and customisable options that is possible with the fact that Nexus devices are easy to tinker with combined with the support of the developer community who are constantly providing support for devices for years even after they reach their sell by date(shoutout to all the devs btw )
Combined with this I guess its safe to stay for the most advanced users and beginners alike it all depends on if they're specific needs are still being met for them to stay with Nexus 6 or any other device for that matter and if not then it's time to upgrade.
Personally I will probably stick with Nexus 6 for as long as it lasts me or if a phone gets released with everything the Nexus 6 is and hopefully more ( Preferably a phone such as the Xperia Z5 Ultra , if Sony ever release it )

The price is too high for me. No front facing speakers, "just" a 5.5 Inch screen etc etc. For the moment my N6 is fast and stable enough to use it for the best part of the next year as well.
Bottom line, I would rather buy a OnePlus 3, than a "New Nexus" at this point.

Did they unviel it yet? I have my credit card ready. But i love my n6 to much lol

I've grown to the size of my phone and cant seem myself owning anything smaller.

Since first buying the Nexus 6 a couple years ago or so I've had a Moto X Pure, Huawei Mate 7, OnePlus 3, and now I'm back to the Nexus 6. This phone just has everything I want in a phone. 6 inch screen (which for me is the perfect size), simple, clean design, great development, stereo speakers, and good battery life. No point in updating to a newer phone for minimal gains in speed at the cost of at least a couple of the N6's great features.

More than likely I'm going to upgrade. My N6 will be paid off in October.

I'm ready for a smaller form factor, unless they completely **** it up and the design is completely underwhelming, I will be getting one, I'm not gonna get it on launch day like the Shamu though , gonna take my sweet time waiting for reviews to make a final decision, there is a chance I will be sticking with this device for another cycle, we'll see

Me too, I wish they would make another Nexus with a screen this size! They did it once and never again! I LOVE my N6!

I'll be keeping my N6 or getting the One Plus 3 if what I have heard and read about the new devices is true. I just love my N6, has everything I've ever wanted (minus a removable SD and/or battery which I really don't miss). Got my son a OP3 and it is really nice, I really liked my OP1. OnePlus is as close to a Nexus as you can get and unlike recent Nexus they are still inexpensive.
