S4 cannot boot up - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone keep restarting since last night. There is no change made recently. It cannot boot up properly, it will auto shut down after showing the Samsung s4 icon. I took out the SD card and sim card, but no differences. I cannot navigate to the recovery mode and download mode as the phone will auto turn off after the samsung s4 icon. I changed to a new battery but still get same error.
Any idea how to fix ?
Many thanks.

It's probably your power button that is faulty. Try to wedge it or replace it.

@icefox913
Hello, when you insert battery your device powers on itself? If yes, maybe your power button is really broken or your USB port is dirty. If not, pull out battery and press Download Mode combination (Vol- + Home + Power), reinsert battery and see if booted in download. In this case, read here how to reflash through Odin

I had the same problem couple of days ago. I had to press the lock button like 8~10 times till it booted up and did that several times till it booted correctly.
I don't know the reason but I removed the SD card and the problem vanished ... I don't know if it was either the lock key or the battery but till now it's working fine

yes it did that and sometimes if I slammed the phone it'll boot up by its own but after taking the SD card out it's working fine and when the phone was working and booting normally sometimes the lock button worked if I only use it to lock the phone but whenever I long press it to get the power menu it just hung there and turned off or it turned off after I press the lock key again and sometimes I didn't even press it and it turned off

Thanks.
Does the power button and mother board are same thing?
Went to service center today, they suspect it is due to the mother board spoilt, but need to pay 50 bucks for the evaluation.

It's this part.

I think you need to solder it to the mother board.
50 bucks for the evaluation? That's expensive.

Possible brick?

So I've encountered the soft brick many times and been fine. Well now, after messing with Odin, the phone is off and won't come back on.
I've attempted turning it on with the power, power + vol up/down, plugged in, pulled the battery for a few mins and tried again, etc...
Is this a possible full on brick?
try doing it without pressing the power button
To expand a little on what chikin said
1. remove battery, sim and sd cards
2. plug in usb from phone to pc
3. holding only the volume buttons (up and down), pop the battery back in
This should launch you into dl mode. I remember last week someone was having the same issue, phone would not respong to anything and would not power on, and this method brought him to dl mode where he could use odin to flash to stock. If it doesn't work at first, keep trying, patience and persistence is the key.

Oh wow, thank you so much! I was ready to drop this thing in the toilet and go make an insurance claim today.
Did you get 'er to boot?
Sent from my Br1cK'd_KA6 Vibrant via the XDA App
Damn, think I am on the same boat and it's slowing sinking. Just got my phone last night too and followed the video on how to flash the AXURA Vibrant edition rom and everything appeared to go smoothly and then after it was done I rebooted my phone and now I can't turn it on and even tried the pulled battery method mentioned here too.
How long does it take after you pop in the battery? A few seconds or a minute before something comes up on screen? Thanks.

By the coincidence, is your batt serial no beginning with BD? If so, look on the battery. Is it swollen a bit? If so - call samsung, they will replace battery free of charge.
If not, try to connect phone to charger, insert battery, go to recovery and make full wipe.

it might be a power button issue
ok, this may be tricky.
while keeping volume down and home - slice battery in. If phone would boot in download mode (even just for a while) - then it will be power button issue.
it boots up on download mode for seconds and then powered off again....
Im digging up this post because this is the same problem i had.
I ended up removing the power button all together, carefully popped it off the motherboard. The phone no longer boots for a couple secs and powers off again so i think the power button was the issue. Now i have the problem of powering on the phone. I tried booting into download mode (to have the reboot option) by holding volume down+home while plugging it in but nothing happens, all i get is the battery charging icon. Ive been into download mode before i removed the button, but like the OP, it would only be a second or 2 before rebooting. Am i doing the correct procedure for download mode? Perhaps my timing is off? Any suggestions?
At least i do get the battery charge and it stays until i unplug the phone, no more boot loop!

Ok so i managed to get the phone to power up without going into download mode using this method i found on youtube. No boot loop and fully powered up now, the only thing is that im stuck on the lock screen. My friend cant remember his pin so i cant get in, the only option left now is to boot into recovery and do a factory reset yes? Well, how can i do that without a power button? Any suggestions?

Help diagnosing damage

I dropped my S4 on a hard floor in its case and it was still working for a few minutes and then turned off. Now when I take the battery out and put it back in it automatically shows the first Samsung screen, vibrates, then turns off. I can't get it into recovery or download. Thanks for any help.

Probably your power button is stuck. Try to wiggle it loose or replace it.

I've taken the phone apart to make sure nothing came loose and the power button it moving. Could it be damaged and still be clicky?

I found this.
Maybe give it a shot:

The phone doesn't stay on long enough to boot. I tried recovery and download mode and it sometimes shows that it's going to recovery then powers off.
I tested the power button with my multimeter and the circuits check out. Not sure where to go from here.

I am still sure it's your power button.
- The device boots automatically when you put the battery in.
- It reboots before it enters recovery
- It reboots before or when you are in download mode.
It's a common problem.
I just ordered the replacement switch. I will post back after I receive it and solder it on.

Thanks for the input. I was almost ready to give up on this phone. I ended up breaking the power button off by wiggling it with a screwdriver and booting it by plugging it in without a battery then putting the battery in and holding to use download mode and canceling to boot.

Is my phone done for? (Cant bot/charge/enter download mode/no response)

So few days ago my phone suddenly turned off and kept rebotting itself (It would reach the samsung galaxy logo and then turn off). I thought it was a battery issue so I removed it for 30mins and tried again, worked fine for an hour then problem started again. I left it over night to charge in the wall socket incase.
Same issue next morning and no solution.
I replaced the battery with a friends and the same issue happened on my phone (i used my battery on his and it works fine on his) so I removed the issue of battery itself.
That evening the phone then just stopped responding at all. It would not respond to pressing the power button (no load, no vibration).
Tried entering download mode using vol down + home + power. Nothing. (So cant use Odin)
Tried entering recovery mode using vol up + power. Nothing
Tried hard reset using vol up + power + home. Nothing.
(All the steps I used a fully charged battery from another s4 phone and removed/re-entered before trying again)
So I check online and notice some people having issues with power button, but even if that is the case - wouldn't my phone still charge? I dont even get the battery chargning icon on the screen when plugged in either PC or wall socket.
I opened it up and changed the motherboard with another samsung s4 and my original problem mobo still does not load on the new s4. (My new mobo worked on the old device though).
The ONLY response I got was when I used my original mobo on new s4 device and plugged it into PC, it popped connect and then disconnect sound and thats it (doesnt recognize usb port).
What are my options apart from getting another motherboard or going to a shop for a JTAG repair? I was contemplating just removing the power button and seeing if that helps in getting a charge response lol
Well your power button is broken for sure. Replace it and then test it.

Wouldn't the phone still recognize charging even if the power button is faulty?

It always takes a few seconds before it starts to charge. So maybe the device reboots before reaching the charging phase. I'm guessing though. But since your problems started with power button issues it would be the logic place to start.
The part only costs a few dollars.
Well I'm exactly in the same situation as you, since this morning on a i9505 running JFLTPE-GPE 5.0 ROM. The screen appears for 1 second or 2 (Samsung logo) then it powers off . I need to remove the battery to try something else.
Same behaviour, even for recovery mode, so Odin is not an option.
I thought that changing some kernel settings have caused that, but as I just put them back to default values, it should not happen.
I didn't have some power button issues, it was just powered off at my wake up this morning. In your case, does your phone vibrate and power up instantly when you put the battery ? That's the case for me, but it should not be the normal.
My problem is actually solved : indeed, it was the power button. I removed all the screws and played a little with this power button (air dust, etc...), enough to make it start correctly !
I managed to do some backups, and now I hope that it won't break again.

Yeah, that happened before (automatically powering up, vibrating, going to samsung logo and then shutting down and doing it again until I removed battery - putting the battery back in with start it up without pressing the power button).
When it was in that phase, the one thing that did work was doing a soft reset (home+power+down vol, and then holding just power) - however that only worked for like an hour before it went back to the restart phase.
However now it doesn't respond to anything at all. (Any kind of response I got was when I put that mobo in another s4 and plugged in usb, which just gave a connected/disconnect sound on w7, no life on the phone itself).
Be very careful as to what you do, I suggest you do NOT leave the battery on it and charge it (which was the last thing I did before it went unresponsive) - my guess is phone went haywire trying to turn on/off continously.

if you did factory reset and problem is still there, there is probably hardware fault, go to repair shop
hi
i have this issue since this morning. maybe 3 or 4 freezes.
do you use edge screen features? i have enabled them yesterday and today have this problem. i think that could be a reason.
to fast restart your phone you have to hold down + home + power buttons and then click down button for reset.

No Im not using the edge screen and this method not work to restart the pbone even if I hold it to hours it can be restarted only when battery drained and the blue light stops linking which mean battery drained then I pluged it to charger then I can press power button and start it.
Wait for the battery to get fully discharged and then again charge it. It will start again. I am facing the same problem since some days and didnt get any solution for it. Does your phone heat up too?
