Hi just hoping someone has a solution for this. Notice that if I move with the device I get a terrible hiss or crackle in the audio. This is also noticeable if there is slight wind. Any way to reduce Mic gain or other ways to improve audio in videos. Super disappointed.
Thanks!

I wonder if it is the same problem I'm having, I just bought the phone and don't even have the right size sim yet to test audio in calls but when I recorded a video with the camera it has horrible static throughout. Even recording a silent room.
The only other test I could do of the mic was the voice recorder which worked fine.
I really need to know what is up before I pay to sim unlock it and swap my sim for the right size.

I tried to video record my son while he was speaking but at playback I could hardly hear his voice. He was about 1 meter apart and I could hear him as if he was 20m away. My voice sounded ok though. I assume that the microphone used for audio recording is the same as the phone mic with higher volume control.
Is everyone experiencing the same?
Also, Ihaven't found any controls to configure audio levels for different circumstances (i.e. phone ringer, speakerphone, speaker during conversation, etc.) Is it necessary to only configure volume when you are in that area (i.e only during conversation or during playback) and not all at once in a special control panel? (I hope you understand the last part as I don't know how to explain better)
I also feel that the playback volume for recorded video is too low (even on max volume). The audio quality is also not as good as I would hope. I have yet to test playback on a PC though.
Unfortunately anything related to Desire HD sound is low at the bottom line no matter recording or speaker it is.
agreed that recording volume is too low. But one thing i did find is that when you hold your phone to record, the natural position where your right hand holds the phone actually covers the microphone (well at least for me). So make sure your hand isnt covering that and it might improve sound a little.
But when i playback a recording on my laptop it sounds ok when i max the volume.. definitely audible.
Im also getting this low mic problem, made sure i was not covering mic, still low volume. Even took the case off, still no joy, cant believe they did not test this before launch
Please HTC sort this out
After playing back recorded videos on my laptop, i'd agree with SupremeBeaver that the volume is ok. The sound quality seems much better too, so i'm not too fussed now
I have been playing around with my HD2 on Phone 7 for the last few days and i am super pleased with the overall performance stability and user comfort it brings. Only drawback i have currently is that the market is not working but i think i farked up somewhere along the line there with the activation and registration.
Only one issue remains and that is the recording of video in 720P. The sound is to loud it seems and there is a big HISS covering all other sound. Now i was wondering what this sound could be seeing i recorded in a silent room (true silent room for hearing testing) and still the hissing was in the background. So while recording i put my HD2 to my ears and behold the hissing sound is the back speaker emitting static. I have no idea how to fix this seeing i am not an DEV.
But seeing the clutter of posts in the general tread i started this one. Can anyone confirm this behavior on their HD2 running Phone 7 ?

The phone itself is emitting the sound while recording. The second you start the recorder it starts to hiss. And yes the hissing is there when you play back the video. And YES it is 720P i recorded video and checked its auto focus is a tad laggy but it works.
I can confirm both, that it's 720p and the noise in the background.
I have a few solutions in mind, I will try them and post back here so soon. As this noise is so frustrating !
I didnt find any unusual hiss noise. Only thing I found was wind noise, and Im cool with that. THe audio is very very clear in my honest opinion.
i didn't find any hiss either
in fact my phone was rather silent when recording!
although i have changed the maxdbatten to 60 and ui vol to 50
my volume setting was at five
and i listened to it back, and the music i "recorded" was very clear
infact you could hear my computer fans!
...
When i playback the video on my computer, there's no hissing sound. On the phone i hear hissing sound when playing any 720p video, so it has to be something with the format itself.
For the ppl who reply there is no hiss or static sound in the background or at all can you try and confirm the back speaker of the HD2 makes no sound either in video recording modus ?
I found video recorded are a bit yellow. look my own video test at http://youtu.be/rDGcYVOOkbY. Weather was foggy not so clear.

I've just given it a try and I certainly don't have any hissing noises during recording or playback.
noise
I am suffering from this static noise too. And yes, it is definitely eminating from the back of the phone. Tried different rom versions, the noise stays the same. I would appreciate if someone would share the solution with me.
Hiss
Here too !!!
Hi I was wondering if there was a fix or something to tweak the level of sound the phone records when you are recording a video. Since every time I want to record videos in music festivals or concerts the bass would be too loud and distorts the sound unlike other phones. If anyone does know an answer to this it would be much appreciated! TIA
i've seen several people ask the same question, however nobody seems to be able to answer the question.
i'd like to know this as well.
Not sure about that but a ghetto workaround i do when recording audio or video in loud environments is to cover the mic with something, like cloth or a case or your finger or something to reduce the input volume of the sound.. So you can do that in the mean time, but I'm sure there must be a way to change it..

I have tried using my finger to block the mic but that did not do much, I have not tried the tape method yet so I might try that sometime.
bump, anyone else figure out any solution to this?
So , everyone who has bought the phone has accepted the fact that you cannot take a video ( cause the sound is awful ) ? It's the reason that i want to sell it,battery custom kernel undervolt and such , sd slot you learn live with it but i cannot accept it that there is no fix for that thing. It is driver issue? it is the way lg put the mic? it is faulty mic? Is there any single person who have managed to take a nice video with acceptable sound in video recording? Any help will enlighten many, i am sure.
when recording video i get the awful hissing sound
steps i tried
reflashing
turning off sound zoom
turning on airplane mode to disable radio
anyone else?

I wouldn't even try to guess until you provide a reasonable amount of information about your situation. How do you expect us to narrow anything down without any clues?
Where is a sample video clip or even a decent description of the hiss? Tell us under what conditions this occurs, e.g. only on quiet environments, randomly, always, etc. Does it change when you change video quality settings, internal, external mike? What model phone, firmware version and anything else that appears even remotely relevant.
.
oki. ill upload a sample. it occurs under all circumstances, phone is pure stock so camera app and all is out of the box

That seems to be a musical selection.. so how to tell what is part of the unknown music track and what is hiss? Better would have been recording the quietest environment you could find. Or if the hiss only shows up when recording something, then play a recorded music track. And provide both the phone recording and the original music track so that it can be, more or less, subtracted or distinguished from the hiss.
It would help if the track didn't have interfering music or if you tried recording in quiet, moderate, loud environments, impulse sounds, etc with comments on whether the hiss varies under various conditions. At a guess it's the aggressive ALC (auto level control) when you record with the internal (?) mike. So when there is a quiet part in the music, the ALC cranks up the gain and the noise from the phone circuit becomes more apparent. On that theory it would be good to know if using an external mike alleviates the problem or not.
If it is an ALC problem.. there isn't much that you can do about it.. other than consider using an external mike.. not recording in quiet locations, which could be difficult.. or hope that someone disassembles and tames the ALC.
.
I have the same problem. Even returned my phone to the service and they did smth to the mic, maybe even replaced it. But my problem is still there. Search for check out 'hissing 001' video on youtube, i have uploaded a sampleml. they said they tried recording videos with two other samsung fives, and they all had hissing problems. But i just cant accept that a quality phone like thos has an amateur error like this... for others, sound recording sounds just fine. What can I do?
I'm having the same problem. Not sure when it started but now the hissing sound happens most of the time when I recorded videos. Recording voice through an app doesn't create any hissing sound. Anyone can provide anything we can try? TIA.

I just got my device back from service, and I have to say they did something to it, because now the mic works PERFECT, without hissing whatsoever.
IT could be sw related problem, but i strongly believe they gave me a brand new mic.
good luck!

Thanks for the update Darkerr9. I'm tempted to replace the mic by myself but not so confident I can handle it. Watched how to do it on youtube and will cost me around $25 for the parts. I still think it's software related issue since when recording just voice, it works perfectly. No white noise or anything. ... hmmm.. what to do..?

Ah, I see. Well I still had my warranty so they did it for free. And remember, the 1st time they (another service) tried to fix this, they failed to do so. I guess I got lucky now... voice recording quality is poorer, so that doesnt count imo btw if you use your headset mic, you will see (hear) that the problem is fixed..
Hi everyone. I have the same problem and it's very frustrating. I don't have a solution BUT I know the reason why it's hissing . It's not the microphone! When I record only audio with both microphones it's all OK. The problem occurs when front cam is on! When my girlfriend close up the phone to her ear she heard that awful sound (hissing). So the camera make that noise. Top mic is very close to the cam so mic gets that noise. Try to hear very closely to the cam and check if you have the same noise from cam.
I have my Verizon S5 currently sitting on 4.4.4 NK7. I've noticed no matter what video recording app I use, whether it be Snapchat or the native camera app, that audio on video playback always seems a bit distorted if the video was captured in a loud environment. Yet I see friends with other newer android phones and iPhones that have recorded footage the same venues (concerts) where their audio is much more tolerable. Has anyone else experienced this? I've been holding off on updating to lollipop, but if that is a known fix I might go that route.
For example, even recording a video on my car with the audio at a normal volume results in distorted audio quality.
Lollipop won't change anything, cause that's a big problem to not fix immediately. Are you possibly covering a mic when recording? Are phone calls clear? I'm not sure how to fix your problem, I'm just throwing out ideas. A search didn't bring up anything.
Apparently it's a common problem within the Samsung phones:

Was hoping there was a software option to adjust the gain level it records at.

I saw the xda thread but wasn't sure if it was the same. Someone said disable the noise reduction option, and that should fix it.
