I have my Verizon S5 currently sitting on 4.4.4 NK7. I've noticed no matter what video recording app I use, whether it be Snapchat or the native camera app, that audio on video playback always seems a bit distorted if the video was captured in a loud environment. Yet I see friends with other newer android phones and iPhones that have recorded footage the same venues (concerts) where their audio is much more tolerable. Has anyone else experienced this? I've been holding off on updating to lollipop, but if that is a known fix I might go that route.
For example, even recording a video on my car with the audio at a normal volume results in distorted audio quality.
Lollipop won't change anything, cause that's a big problem to not fix immediately. Are you possibly covering a mic when recording? Are phone calls clear? I'm not sure how to fix your problem, I'm just throwing out ideas. A search didn't bring up anything.
Apparently it's a common problem within the Samsung phones:

Was hoping there was a software option to adjust the gain level it records at.

I saw the xda thread but wasn't sure if it was the same. Someone said disable the noise reduction option, and that should fix it.

I have been playing around with my HD2 on Phone 7 for the last few days and i am super pleased with the overall performance stability and user comfort it brings. Only drawback i have currently is that the market is not working but i think i farked up somewhere along the line there with the activation and registration.
Only one issue remains and that is the recording of video in 720P. The sound is to loud it seems and there is a big HISS covering all other sound. Now i was wondering what this sound could be seeing i recorded in a silent room (true silent room for hearing testing) and still the hissing was in the background. So while recording i put my HD2 to my ears and behold the hissing sound is the back speaker emitting static. I have no idea how to fix this seeing i am not an DEV.
But seeing the clutter of posts in the general tread i started this one. Can anyone confirm this behavior on their HD2 running Phone 7 ?

The phone itself is emitting the sound while recording. The second you start the recorder it starts to hiss. And yes the hissing is there when you play back the video. And YES it is 720P i recorded video and checked its auto focus is a tad laggy but it works.
I can confirm both, that it's 720p and the noise in the background.
I have a few solutions in mind, I will try them and post back here so soon. As this noise is so frustrating !
I didnt find any unusual hiss noise. Only thing I found was wind noise, and Im cool with that. THe audio is very very clear in my honest opinion.
i didn't find any hiss either
in fact my phone was rather silent when recording!
although i have changed the maxdbatten to 60 and ui vol to 50
my volume setting was at five
and i listened to it back, and the music i "recorded" was very clear
infact you could hear my computer fans!
...
When i playback the video on my computer, there's no hissing sound. On the phone i hear hissing sound when playing any 720p video, so it has to be something with the format itself.
For the ppl who reply there is no hiss or static sound in the background or at all can you try and confirm the back speaker of the HD2 makes no sound either in video recording modus ?
I found video recorded are a bit yellow. look my own video test at http://youtu.be/rDGcYVOOkbY. Weather was foggy not so clear.

I've just given it a try and I certainly don't have any hissing noises during recording or playback.
noise
I am suffering from this static noise too. And yes, it is definitely eminating from the back of the phone. Tried different rom versions, the noise stays the same. I would appreciate if someone would share the solution with me.
Hiss
Here too !!!
Hi everyone, this is the first time I have posted on here, so I decided to help a few of you with this problem. Having had most of the Samsung galaxy phones I was horrified to find this problem on my new note 5. After a lot of experiments and different recording conditions I have managed to eliminate the static popping and crackling heard when recording a video. It seems that if you record your video in 320x240(4.3) then there is no popping or crackling at all. Then the higher you go towards 3840x2160(16.9) the worse it gets. But at bottom resolution audio is perfect. As a computer I.T engineer and mobile phone technician looking at this logically would tell me this is a software problem. Most lightly the compression or codec used when taking higher quality footage. I have spoke direct to Samsung who flatly refuse to accept there is a problem. However I have other avenues to go down. For now I`m afraid the only thing we can do is to all ring the 0300 Samsung number if your in the Uk if you have this problem. Keep ringing and keep telling until they sort this out. Please feel free to comment how many of you have this problem and I will voice all your cases to them 1 by one if needed !!!

So your soultion is to record video in 320x240 resolution?
Unfortunately seems like the audio problem is an hardware bug and the popping/crackling sound comes up with vocal recorder too.
Hi just hoping someone has a solution for this. Notice that if I move with the device I get a terrible hiss or crackle in the audio. This is also noticeable if there is slight wind. Any way to reduce Mic gain or other ways to improve audio in videos. Super disappointed.
Thanks!

I wonder if it is the same problem I'm having, I just bought the phone and don't even have the right size sim yet to test audio in calls but when I recorded a video with the camera it has horrible static throughout. Even recording a silent room.
The only other test I could do of the mic was the voice recorder which worked fine.
I really need to know what is up before I pay to sim unlock it and swap my sim for the right size.
Hey guys,
Whenever I film a video, either on Motorola's Camera App or on Google's, the audio is REALLY LOUD and it won't cancel/filter any noise.
In other words, the audio in the video sucks.
Also, whenever I record my voice on whatsapp, the audio is REALLY L OUD and has a ton of noise.
Why is this?
I am rooted on MM using systemless root... does this have anything to do with it?
What can I do?
Please help me, this really sux balls! :/

I just started noticing this and its driving me nuts.
I just factory restored with factory image, since i was rooted and issue continues to happen.
Not sure what could be causing it.
I notice it on snapchat a lot more. Sounds like one of those old school movie reels spinning.
can really notice it on quit environment, gets on my nerves.

Is it like this on every device? I got my Pure two days ago, and the recording noise is really a dealbreaker for me. It's really loud on snapchat, which I use a lot. Should I ask for a replacement or just return it and buy a Nexus 6P?
Volume level of actual sound appears normal - that is, spoken voices, or other sounds.
So it appears somehow lots of white noise is getting amplified into the recording.
Hmm.. Appears to be a known issue - https://www.reddit.com/r/MotoX/comments/3ulqdt/noise_while_recording_video_2015_moto_x_pure/

Do you think it's a software or hardware issue? I'm considering returning my device, but it would be useless if it's a software issue. And if it is, maybe motorola are aware of it already?... I'm not really sure what to do lol, because I do love this phone.
Hard to say. Chances are it's possible to somehow disable the noise canceling in this phone. I don't record enough videos for it to matter. I suppose when there is actual sound, it will overcome the white noise anyway.
I have a slight background noise and all audio no matter what app I record through (camera, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook) is very low. I can't use speakerphone either because people on the other end can't hear me. Hopefully some sort of fix comes up. I feel it's more software than hardware. Never had the issue before marshmallow.
Try Open Camera, and then tap the Settings icon (upper right)
In Video settings, choose Audio source and pick 'Default audio source'.
See if that helps for videos. I don't use snapchat so I don't know how to fix that sorry.

I can't find it!! And did it solve the problem?
since swapping to oreo, I am getting very very muted audio when recording video. zero issues before the switch. Videos for example
Recorded this past weekend. open field, kids cheering loudly Ole' Ole'
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HReTGFIyvSU
Up close, live music. no earplugs needed but definately not quiet.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zz-QzuS3cC0
Normal audio. you can here me fiddle with buttons and then speak at the end of the video.

anyone else experience this
Update.
went digging. on this thread HERE I downloaded this camera app and am able to capture good clear audio as specified. However, going back to the camera app, very muffled Audio.
Bump, anyone test this out on video recording? does your camera record properly?
