I wouldn't even try to guess until you provide a reasonable amount of information about your situation. How do you expect us to narrow anything down without any clues?
Where is a sample video clip or even a decent description of the hiss? Tell us under what conditions this occurs, e.g. only on quiet environments, randomly, always, etc. Does it change when you change video quality settings, internal, external mike? What model phone, firmware version and anything else that appears even remotely relevant.
.
oki. ill upload a sample. it occurs under all circumstances, phone is pure stock so camera app and all is out of the box

That seems to be a musical selection.. so how to tell what is part of the unknown music track and what is hiss? Better would have been recording the quietest environment you could find. Or if the hiss only shows up when recording something, then play a recorded music track. And provide both the phone recording and the original music track so that it can be, more or less, subtracted or distinguished from the hiss.
It would help if the track didn't have interfering music or if you tried recording in quiet, moderate, loud environments, impulse sounds, etc with comments on whether the hiss varies under various conditions. At a guess it's the aggressive ALC (auto level control) when you record with the internal (?) mike. So when there is a quiet part in the music, the ALC cranks up the gain and the noise from the phone circuit becomes more apparent. On that theory it would be good to know if using an external mike alleviates the problem or not.
If it is an ALC problem.. there isn't much that you can do about it.. other than consider using an external mike.. not recording in quiet locations, which could be difficult.. or hope that someone disassembles and tames the ALC.
.
I have the same problem. Even returned my phone to the service and they did smth to the mic, maybe even replaced it. But my problem is still there. Search for check out 'hissing 001' video on youtube, i have uploaded a sampleml. they said they tried recording videos with two other samsung fives, and they all had hissing problems. But i just cant accept that a quality phone like thos has an amateur error like this... for others, sound recording sounds just fine. What can I do?
I'm having the same problem. Not sure when it started but now the hissing sound happens most of the time when I recorded videos. Recording voice through an app doesn't create any hissing sound. Anyone can provide anything we can try? TIA.

I just got my device back from service, and I have to say they did something to it, because now the mic works PERFECT, without hissing whatsoever.
IT could be sw related problem, but i strongly believe they gave me a brand new mic.
good luck!

Thanks for the update Darkerr9. I'm tempted to replace the mic by myself but not so confident I can handle it. Watched how to do it on youtube and will cost me around $25 for the parts. I still think it's software related issue since when recording just voice, it works perfectly. No white noise or anything. ... hmmm.. what to do..?

Ah, I see. Well I still had my warranty so they did it for free. And remember, the 1st time they (another service) tried to fix this, they failed to do so. I guess I got lucky now... voice recording quality is poorer, so that doesnt count imo btw if you use your headset mic, you will see (hear) that the problem is fixed..
Hi everyone. I have the same problem and it's very frustrating. I don't have a solution BUT I know the reason why it's hissing . It's not the microphone! When I record only audio with both microphones it's all OK. The problem occurs when front cam is on! When my girlfriend close up the phone to her ear she heard that awful sound (hissing). So the camera make that noise. Top mic is very close to the cam so mic gets that noise. Try to hear very closely to the cam and check if you have the same noise from cam.

Does anyone else have the person they are talking to mention how low you sound to them when speaking on the phone?
It seems like I have a low microphone on my nexus 4, unless the phone is directly in front of my mouth the person can't hear me clearly, I'm thinking it might be hardware but I know with some phones this can be corrected with a custom driver that makes the microphone more receptive
Is there an app or setting that I can use that would disable noise cancellation in case that's what causing my mic to make me sound low?

Actually I have the exact same problem - not sure what we can do to fix it.
If I crank up the volume fully it appears to -sometimes- solve the low audio problem.

if it -sometimes- solves the problem then it might be a software bug. i hope some dev can be notified of this. have you tried a different ROM? if yes, have you notified the dev of the ROM?

Its actually on stock, so I just rooted it, and will try with a different rom shortly.
Same thing here.. Sometimes they hear me, sometimes they don't even during the same call..
I'm starting to think the noise cancellation is playing some tricks.
While driving home this afternoon I was on headset on the freeway, where those I talked to could barely hear me.
Unplugged my headset (klipsch s4 image ii), and sound was good. After a while I plugged headset in again, still bad.
When coming off the freeway I kept the headset on while talking - and all of the sudden it was crystal clear (using the words of the guy I talked to at the time). At the same time I noticed that I had no data (outside even edge coverage), don't know if that is related or not.
Is there some way we could experiment / disable or tweak the noise cancelling?
Ps: I have had the same issues without headset also, so definitely something general software things going on

I had the same setup. I am using the Xylon (stable) 15 ROM for several days now, and SO FAR I think the microphone reception is better. I haven't heard complaint from the person I speak to on the regular. *cross fingers* hope it's 'fixed' in some way.

That's exactly how my phone was as well. I would be on one call for a while and all of a sudden out of nowhere the person I'm speaking to says I sound like I'm speaking across a room and I'm like 'wtf happened? I haven't changed positions since I started talking to you!'
I did a little testing with the person I was speaking to as well, to test the microphone receptiveness and the mic seems to pickup my voice better, I wasn't speaking directly into the mic and they said they heard me fine.

I have a sneaking suspicion It might have to do with the noise cancelation as well, I think on paper whoever designed that feature on the phone thought it would be cool but it doesn't seem to be panning out too well. I've read somewhere on this forum about how to increase microphone volume and cancel the noise cancellation using the Terminal Emulator app and/or the phone's dial codes (#*#*some sumbers*#*#).
I have the same earphones (no mic attached) and I have similar experience but I haven't taken note of it like you have since 95% of the time I have my headphones in the phone.
I also want to mention a little trick that I think seems to work when on calls. Whenever I turn the phone over, screen facing opposite of me, I hear less complaints of me sounding too low to the other person. Maybe it's doning something... i dont know.
Same issue - with headset only though
I have the same issue, people really struggle to hear me on conference calls (which I spend a lot of time on), so I have to hold the mic in front of my mouth to speak which gives awful sound quality. I don't have this issue when not using a headset (phone mic works fine).
Nexus 4 + Klipsch s4a = really quiet mic, people can't hear me at all.
Nexus 4 = No problem, phone mic works.
Note - music playback is fine, no issues there.
My klipsch headphones worked fine on my GNex, no issues, so I don't think it is a problem with them. It has been an issue from the moment I switched to a Nexus 4. Have also tried other headset (samsung one that came with Gnex) - and have the same issue of sounding very quiet on the headset mic.
I did wonder if it was an OMTP vs CTIA issue, but the button on my headset works fine to answer/hangup/skip tracks/open voice search etc. so I don't think it is that.
I also tested with another Nexus 4 handset using Soundmeter and got very similar results on both handsets, suggesting it isn't a handset issue (though not a very scientific test).
Does anyone have any ideas?
Just In Phone Calls?
Hi Folks,
Is this mic issue just related to phone calls?
I'm using the latest CM10.1 nightly build and my mic is useless for phone calls.
However, Google's voice search works just fine and if I record a video my voice is recorded just fine.
I could be wrong but I suspect the Nexus4 can not use the phone jack for incoming audio.
In my opinion when one plugs a headset into the audio jack the Nexus4 camera microphone
becomes activated, not the headset one. And the Nexus4 cam mic is really bad.
Again, I might be completely wrong. (I hope)

OMG you have it reversed. What a mess!
I have yet to see Google Search understand anything I say and video sound is horrible. Call audio is great.
Hi guys - I am on stock android - same issue on 4.2.2 as on 4.2.1.
This isn't just related to phone calls, same issue on google search. I tested headset mic pickup volume when speaking normally with Soundmeter - around 35-40dB (what it calls a quiet whisper at 3ft to quiet residential area, Park).
I also tried moving the headset mic closer and further away from my mouth with the phone in the same position - with the headset mic virtually touching my lips it went to about 60 dB (normal conversation at 3ft) - so it does seem to be related to the headset mic. I can only guess it is either a dodgy connection in the handset or some noise cancelling functionality that is cancelling out my voice!
Any ideas or thoughts greatly appreciated

Darn it!
I knew I was an outlier.
No way I'm getting a fix for my issue then
Anyone figure out a fix? I'm having similar issues with my microphone.
Hooked as bluetooth device in my vehicle, other end hears me fine.
On phone call using speaker phone, other end hears me fine.
On phone call WITHOUT speaker phone, other end cannot hear me at all.
Using a sound recording app to record voice, playback of the recording I can hear my voice faintly if I was YELLING during the recording.
Shazam/Soundhound apps do not work.
I am rooted on rasbeanjelly/trinity kernel. I have to say this issue started a few days ago when I have done no changes to the phone. Already running the rom/kernel for weeks.
I've tried flashing back to stock rom/kernel and the same problems persist.
Any ideas?

Just an update, I unrooted and reverted back to stock and the problem went away, so it was defnitely a software issue. Will be trying other roms/radios/kernels and see if the problem comes back.
I was on rasbeanjelly 4.2.2/trinity
akira112, did you get any success with your experiments?
Guys, is there any progress / comments regarding this issue?.. Microphone itself works fine when recording the voice with some app, but during the voice calls it is the mess...
My Nexus 4 is two months old and is being returned to Google due to the microphone constantly cutting me out on calls to business clients. I've tried every trick from sound apps to custom roms. No joy. I'm hoping my replacement doesn't have the same problem (although given the sheer number of postings on this issue, I suspect a Nexus 4 design flaw)...
Hello
Is there any solution to low microphone volume problem?
I have been using my N4 for a week and some people complain about my voice's volume. There was no such problem with my previous phone (Defy). There is no difference whether I use phone's mic or bluetooth headset.
My Nexus runs CM10.1 with Franco kernel.
Also keen for a solution
I just returned my first N4 due to the speakerphone cutting out after a minute or two, and getting stuck in non-speakerphone mode.
The replacement seems to not have this issue, which is nice.
But now people are telling me they can hardly hear me. It happens both with normal mode and speakerphone mode.
Ridiculous.
I will be calling Google tomorrow to see what they say, but I am not going to hold my breath for a decent response. Judging by the number of people reporting this issue online, it's not something Google has a solution for.
If anyone figures this out, I'd love to hear about it.
Have sent mine for repair because of this problem. People told they could not here me well.

I have the same issue, couldn't fix it but what I noted was that any mic gain adjustments I made only applied to the phone's mic not the headset mic. That means that there is something else that modifies the headset mic, but I do not know.
is there a way to do this in the build prop or something? i'm experimenting with teh awful audio in the video camera and i want to see if it's the noise cancelling mic that's really screwing everything up.
i'm also looking to try to change the gain, anyone know how to do that?
I don't have an answer to your question, but have you considered the placement of your hand when recording? It seems to me that it would be easy to muffle the sound by accident.

My guess is if you open the phone app and hit the menu key and then call settings. from there scroll down to noise suppression and uncheck it.
Not sure there is a way to disable it in video though.

yeah, i read that android usually has different ways to use noise cancellation, like the nexus 4 has a diff classification for video and then voice.
also, I put my phone down on a tripod so it's not my hand placement. it's the bad mics in the phone.

I've also seen people on youtube recording without the noise cancellation mic but he doesn't show how, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NoxMTxiFvo

Hi just hoping someone has a solution for this. Notice that if I move with the device I get a terrible hiss or crackle in the audio. This is also noticeable if there is slight wind. Any way to reduce Mic gain or other ways to improve audio in videos. Super disappointed.
Thanks!

I wonder if it is the same problem I'm having, I just bought the phone and don't even have the right size sim yet to test audio in calls but when I recorded a video with the camera it has horrible static throughout. Even recording a silent room.
The only other test I could do of the mic was the voice recorder which worked fine.
I really need to know what is up before I pay to sim unlock it and swap my sim for the right size.
Does anyone else's phone do this: if you record a video in a quiet room and then play it back on full volume, you will hear an audio static noise. My original plus 32GB Aluminum 6P and 2 RMA replacements all have this issue. I haven't seen much reporting about this so I don't know how widespread it is. It's even worse when you cast your google photos onto your TV.
Would be interested in someone with a sound proof room to try this. That would tell us if there is a sound there that the mic picks up but our ears just don't. Not that that fixes the problem...
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
I've also noticed that when playing back videos on photos.google.com it will not have as loud of a static noise. Maybe this is some software issue.
I've added a poll to see if it's just a select few phones that are doing this. I don't want to keep getting replacements if they are all broken
Static and clicking noise
I have the same issues as you. I recorded a video at night, while in bed, and I caught the issue. I can only heart it when I turn the volume up (~+75%). The reason I did this was because my phone has a buzz/click sound when I plug headphones into the 3.5mm jack. When I pay music or video, I can not hear the static.
Just picked up mine and I also have this issue. Hope it's a SW problem.
Yeah It only happens to my recorded videos after I turn up the volume as well
Still having issues with this. Can even hear static when using a voice recorder
Hey guys,
Whenever I film a video, either on Motorola's Camera App or on Google's, the audio is REALLY LOUD and it won't cancel/filter any noise.
In other words, the audio in the video sucks.
Also, whenever I record my voice on whatsapp, the audio is REALLY L OUD and has a ton of noise.
Why is this?
I am rooted on MM using systemless root... does this have anything to do with it?
What can I do?
Please help me, this really sux balls! :/

Is it like this on every device? I got my Pure two days ago, and the recording noise is really a dealbreaker for me. It's really loud on snapchat, which I use a lot. Should I ask for a replacement or just return it and buy a Nexus 6P?
Volume level of actual sound appears normal - that is, spoken voices, or other sounds.
So it appears somehow lots of white noise is getting amplified into the recording.
Hmm.. Appears to be a known issue - https://www.reddit.com/r/MotoX/comments/3ulqdt/noise_while_recording_video_2015_moto_x_pure/

Do you think it's a software or hardware issue? I'm considering returning my device, but it would be useless if it's a software issue. And if it is, maybe motorola are aware of it already?... I'm not really sure what to do lol, because I do love this phone.
Hard to say. Chances are it's possible to somehow disable the noise canceling in this phone. I don't record enough videos for it to matter. I suppose when there is actual sound, it will overcome the white noise anyway.
I have a slight background noise and all audio no matter what app I record through (camera, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook) is very low. I can't use speakerphone either because people on the other end can't hear me. Hopefully some sort of fix comes up. I feel it's more software than hardware. Never had the issue before marshmallow.
Try Open Camera, and then tap the Settings icon (upper right)
In Video settings, choose Audio source and pick 'Default audio source'.
See if that helps for videos. I don't use snapchat so I don't know how to fix that sorry.
