Looks like AT&T is not being the first to roll out the 4.4.4 update. I'm guessing it will be happening sooner than later.
Here is a list of the updates happening:
Android 4.4.4
HD voice Icon support
International Wi-Fi Calling support
Google Security Patches
Knox 2.0
Kids Mode
I got this from Samsung's website talking about Sprint:
http://www.samsung.com/us/support/SupportOwnersFAQPopup.do?fm_seq=73981&faq_id=FAQ00057083
I also heard from rumors that they are planning to unlock our bootlooder. I wouldn't put to much weight in that though.
But, Knox 2.0? What is that?
I lost hope on a bootloader unlock

Another thought is, since the new Note 4 is so close to the Note 3, as far as what we can do with it, I really don't see that much of a software update happening.
Think about it. Sammy's main goal is to make more $$ on the new hardware, so why invest more time andc $$ in an update?
Just a thought.

Supposedly they have to support us with updates and stuff for 18 months. The Note 3 has been out for almost a year, so we should still be getting 4.4.4 and L. I have a feeling they're going to skip 4.4.4 and go straight to L, which I will be avoiding at all costs.

AT&T/Samsung updates go in the direction of maximum corporate security, so unless you're the network admin for some company, probably not. (They want to turn your phone into the company's phone, so if you're not in the business of buying your employer a phone that they allow you minimal use of, Samsung is no longer the phone to buy.
Maybe if they lose enough business, they'll change their policy.

L= downfall of Android. Read up on it and you will see why. After the KitKat update fiasco earlier this year I've learned my lesson and plan to stay put on 4.4.2 until my Note 3 dies.
I'm thinking 4.4.4 sooner rather then later. I'm assuming several months before an "L" release.

This is what I'm going to go with. L is a long ways away for Samsung devices. Look how long 4.4.4 has been out and we still haven't seen it. I wish it was different and AT&T had speedy updates but sadly that's not the case.

I'm saying L= bad because I've read rumors about how Google will be incorporating Knox or something like it into the source code. It'll be locked down tighter than NC2 and may be the end of root and ROMs. Supposedly even the Nexus 5 guys had a hard time rooting the L developer preview.
I'll wait and see if the rumors about L are true before moving away from Android. There's no way I'd be caught dead with an iPhone and Windows phones don't appeal to me.
I'll see if I can get you some links after work.

Adding "Knox" to the search helped a bunch. Here's a pretty good article:
http://www.cso.com.au/article/550673/google_details_knox-inspired_enterprise_managed_profiles_android_l/
It looks as if Google may still try to lock the bootloader, just not through Knox.
Thanks!

It's already been released that the bootloader was unlocked but is not being released until the Verizon variant comes out for obvious reasons. It's a great phone rooted out of the box with AT&T crapware gone, so it's your choice: wait a few weeks for development or go ahead and get one that has dev support.
Btw: The number 2 is Verizon for waiting to release the S4 a MONTH after everyone else.

Here's the Q&A from the person who has already hacked the bootloader:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2259933
---------- Post added at 11:09 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:06 PM ----------
And on the 2st page of that thread:
"Because if he releases the exploit or details now, Verizon can use that information to fix their implementation. It's not guaranteed this approach will work on the Verizon device, but it's FAR less likely if he publishes info on the exploit now. Even this announcement could bode ill for the hopes of Verizon customers - you can guarantee it is going to trigger another round of security review at Samsung and Verizon.
As a result, you're not going to see any detail until then."
Got it. That makes sense..
And thanks for not ripping my ignorance..
I guess I can wait another 2 weeks before I upgrade. No rush until we know for sure we are good to go.

Then maybe you should wait until the unlocked bootloader is released and the S4 has custom recovery, at which time there will probably be a CWM installable zip file for the Google Wallet.

I decided I am going to sell my Samsung Galaxy S4 so that I can get the Google Edition when it is released. I spent a long time debating whether or not I should open the box. It's killing me having an S4 in my room and not being able to use it.
In the end I decided to wait for these reasons:
1. The Google Edition phone is guaranteed to have a stable operating system that gets prompt updates directly from Google
2. Even though the AT&T Galaxy S4 is 99% sure the bootloader will be unlocked the Google Edition ships with an unlocked bootloader which is nice.
3. No one is for sure if the AOSP ROM from the google edition will be able to run on the AT&T phone or not. It seems that it is likely but I need to be sure.
In the end the AT&T Galaxy S4 and the Google Edition may very well be the exact same phone but no one knows for sure yet and I would rather not take the chance. I listed my phone on Swappa for $580.
Do you think this is a wise choice or should I abort the sale and just keep my Galaxy S4?
You made this thread. You have doubts so I'd say keep it. You're gonna have to wait a month or so depending on how limited supply the Google edition is.

Google will be selling this phone directly through the Play Store. No way is Samsung re-engineering or altering their device for Google, they are simply allowing Google to resell it with their own software. I would be shocked if the Google GS4 is different hardware considering it will be out in just over a month.

The US GS4 handsets are made in Korea and China. there has been some discussion that the ones made in China are of a lesser quality than those made in Korea (heat, lag, etc)... I have one made in Korea, and haven't seen any of those issues.

Im not talking about touchwiz being stable. I mean if the ATT Galaxy were to tun AOSP would it be stable since it is a port?
Also there are several versions of the GS4 out now. No ones knows which one the play store will have.
Personally I would keep it you know developers will port the Google version to it. Why spend more money for same phone. Plus you know the Google version will be limited supply initially with long wait time unless you are the lucky few who order within 5 minutes of it going up for sale. Sometimes I think both Google and Apple make low supply on purpose to seem like phone are hot sellers.

Heh I'm not worried, everything always comes in time ... Motorola obviously didn't launch the phone in the US and I'm just interested in the turnaround since then from the planned US launch in January. To me this is kind of a disappointment, considering that the time was taken to produce a security update for an exploit that has been around a while, but the release a new os for the ultra/maxx/mini users that could better the experience and patch the security issues is nowhere in sight. Furthermore with this patch, its very doubtful that we will see L on our devices.

Big disappointment indeed. This is all Verizon has to offer? A patch for the stagefright bug? Wow, I'm impressed. Not!
Yeah, I think at this point droid maxx/ultra/mini users can pretty much forget about getting Lollipop. I mean come on, L has been out for a year and these phones are two years old now. They (the carriers) are not going to waste time, money, and effort on dinosaur phones, especially with Marshmallow out now.
Edit: Just got my "New system software available". Had to go into settings>system update to get the notification. The update is only 2.7 megabytes. Just a bug patch, that's all.

So if they don't deliver, will maxx users get a kickback like atrix hd owners did when kk wasn't delivered.

I do not think the boot is touched. Do not suffer bad sw for nothing.
Bought the Maxx at launch and still using it (I'm unlocked/rooted), but have already ordered my Nexus 6P. I'm done with Verizon's inability to update phones, so I'm taking them out of the equation.

Not so minor, read major BUG fix!
Stock launcher update, no more safe boot crashes while you have more than 200 apps.
For starters...
Look at the zip, many apps updated.

The "update" is only 2.7 mb in size. There is not a lot going on with the update. Just the stagefright patch that's all.
Verizon took all this time just to come out with a 2.7 mb update? This sucks bigtime.
I'm looking at getting the Moto X Pure. It is unlocked and can be used on Verizon's network. The bootloader is unlockable through Motorola/Lenovo. I don't want any more of Verizon's locked down phones.

I don't think the Maxx is going to see Lollipop at all.
Also, if there is a bootloader unlock exploit developed, I don't think this minor update will prevent you from using it. That's just my opinion.

You're wrong! Many apps updated to fix long standing bugs. LOOK at the 2 sys app folders before you make ignorant statements. I took it based on the app folder content, it fixed a major bug. I bet it fixes the Bluetooth / Maps / Youtube bug as well.... You assume that vzw passes all the Moto details to us. They do not.
What is the build date on the update? And we are just now getting it.

I'm fairly certain that those apps updated from the play store, but again thats just a hunch.

Well my stock MotLauncher2 no longer crashes on safe boot. Before it would crash if user apps were more than ~ 100 but I never remembered the cut off.

Guys this is a minor update so if a bootloader unlock method was created then you can downgrade the version back to do the bootloader unlock method its not a Lollipop update just a like a new build update..Only problem is will this break root access if we update????

That will never happen. And firmware images from Google are not going to be signed to flash to the Verizon-locked phones. Because Verizon knows people will try and do that.

Oh I know that just joking around lol
So basically all Verizon will do is sign the updates. They would do this in order to lock down the device.

they gotta say something to get you into the store so they can try to upsell you their crap & services they offer while buying this phone.. it’s Verizon, can’t trust them at all till you see it happen...i remeber when the HTC Rezound was promised ICS "shortly after launch" and didn’t get it for another 9 months.
Now correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the Verizon branded nexus 6 have an unlockable bootloader? And I can confirm the unlocked version of the nexus 6 having fully working volte minus video calling on Verizon
You guys are silly if you believe them. Research the last time Verizon had a Nexus.
Why in the world would Verizon want to handle updates other than to alter, add bloat and remove features they csn charge you for.
I will say. Getting a free Google VR headset with pre order is tempting

Yes. Unless someone cracks the bootloader. Verizon carries all the government contracts so they will never knowingly allow unlocked phones on their network. Honestly though I doubt you will find a more streamlined experience than stock Android on the Pixel. It was designed to run 7.1. I doubt any ROM will improve on it. The fact that Google is in control of the software as well means you will always be on the latest version.

But Google is not in control. Just because Verizon says they'll release at same time
A. Doesn't mean they will. They've lied before
B. Doesn't mean Verizon won't strip features they think they can profit from by offering their crappy version. It's done on virtually every android phone they offer. Why else would they want to "handle" updates

Actually Google is in control. It's a first for them but it will be how apple controls their software. Read number 6 from this link

Right. So I don't see anything about Verizon and not allowing carriers like Verizon to remove apps and features on their phones. They let them install bloatware Verizon apps that can be "deleted" but can they be uninstalled?
This isn't like Apple because Apple doesn't let Verizon "handle" their updates.
I bit the bullet and ordered a pixel xl, but nobody will know how Verizon will tamper with it until a new version of android releases.

I linked an article and said to read #6 but you did not. So here it is on a spoon for you.
Update [10/12/16]:?*Google and Verizon seem to have reached a revised and more firmly defined position on this matter. In a new statement provided this morning, Google now says: "Google controls the distribution of all OS updates and security patches for Pixel devices. OS updates and monthly security patches will be updated on all Pixel devices (Verizon and non-Verizon versions) simultaneously."
Everything I have read has stated the the VZ apps are uninstallable.
It is more like Apple for updates in this case. Google and Verizon both said Google will be pushing the updates.

Yeah the Nexus program was just google dabbling. They are going directly after apple with the Pixel. And hopefully other Android OEM's. Fragmentation has always been a problem and Google is finally starting to do something about it. iOS has always had the upper hand this way by controlled releases and software/hardware being designed together. That's exactly what the Pixel was made to compete with.
