4.4.2 KitKat roll out announced - Moto G General

That was quick. Way to go Google!
http://9to5google.com/2013/12/19/android-4-4-2-kitkat-to-begin-rolling-out-to-the-moto-g-today/
"Android KitKat Comes to Moto G - Our KitKat family is expanding! When we launched Moto G last month, we committed to delivering Android, KitKat, to devices by early 2014. We are thrilled to start delivering on that promise early. Starting today, we are rolling out Android 4.4.2 to Moto G phones bought on Motorola.com or Amazon.com in the U.S. KitKat will come to other Moto G carriers and regions soon as well. This latest version of Android brings some cool new features, including printing emails and photos from your phone."

They're doing a super job. In the little time I've had this, I've really noticed the little things such as their Xmas boot animation. I'm aware that some don't like it, but I think most will like the little touch of 'class'. Personally, I'd like to see them really surprise me with a Superbowl or BCS bowl animation but I recognize that will only appeal to a few.

Nice, although note:

So I guess that still means January for the non-US models. Not sure why Motorola has shifted attention to the US so much in recent weeks after the initial launch, but I suppose we'll have to see how this all pans out.

I wouldn't worry too much unless you got one of the phones tied to a carrier. It'll come in time.

Heh I'm not worried, everything always comes in time ... Motorola obviously didn't launch the phone in the US and I'm just interested in the turnaround since then from the planned US launch in January. It's been a bit irritating to see all the 16GB stock suddenly appear in the US when it's been hard to get any in the UK, not to mention accessories ... anyway, off-topic.

Can't we just flash the phone with stock US then do the update ???

Hopefully. I've just flashed Blur_Version.14.14.16.falcon_umts.Retail.en.US over a UK moto G
It gave some warnings during the flash process but worked ok. Not sure though which will upgrade to KitKat first this or Blur_Version.14.14.16.falcon_umts.AWSRetail.en.US

My brother's phone just got the update. I'm searching for a way to retrieve the update, but if anyone knows how to get at it without root or anything, let me know and I'll upload it.

...I haven't installed the update yet because once I do, it won't be retrievable. I'm looking for a way to extract it from the phone, but the phone has no root, ergo, I can't reach the /cache folder. I can't find any conclusive answers on how to retrieve it though without root, so I think I'll just install it for him.
Sorry folks, but without root, I don't think I can do it.

Patience, guys. The rollout is happening in phases, and for now only 1% of two specific sales channels get the update. They are the guinea pigs, so to speak. Once everything is fine, the update will be approved for more users.

To me ...reverting to stock is the simplest way.
If you absolutely don't want to lose your stuff ...you have to return it to stock piece by piece. Many threads about it already. Many.
Tho...I just transferred all my stuff to my pc ....including my titanium backup folder....pics and all that...and used rsdlite ...and put all my stuff back after. Rooted it. Restored my titanium backup. Done.

While I can agree with this partially, if AT&T and Verizon didn't junk up the firmware and change stuff that didn't need to be changed, then we wouldn't really have a legit reason to root the phone. Dev Editions are for people who want exposed modules and all that jazz, and I feel like Moto should've made a MM phone that was Dev Edition, but can't have your cake and eat it too. Again, if AT&T and Verizon used the same firmware as T-Mobile did, then I'm sure a LOT more people, including myself, would be happy and not need root.

I'm happy the USB OTG is back and the phone feels snappier. Battery life (for me) is noticeably better after a significant decline with 4.4. Good that they fixed all the bluetooth volume issues I was having with my headset (basically one volume on the LG Tone+ and when connected to the car, voice notifications came into the phone and not out of the car speakers). Also looks like some notifications have had some tweaks, such as picture auto-backup now shows a thumbnail of some of the images that were backed up. It's a REALLY good update for me.
Only thing that bugs me so far is that when you remove the USB storage, you get a notification that stays there until the next reboot.
I already had great battery life. But it seems to have gotten slightly better. Not marginal, but it was enough for me to notice. Basically getting a bit more out of a 100% charge.

KitKat 4.4.4 Rollout

Looks like AT&T is not being the first to roll out the 4.4.4 update. I'm guessing it will be happening sooner than later.
Here is a list of the updates happening:
Android 4.4.4
HD voice Icon support
International Wi-Fi Calling support
Google Security Patches
Knox 2.0
Kids Mode
I got this from Samsung's website talking about Sprint:

Another thought is, since the new Note 4 is so close to the Note 3, as far as what we can do with it, I really don't see that much of a software update happening.
Think about it. Sammy's main goal is to make more $$ on the new hardware, so why invest more time andc $$ in an update?
Just a thought.

Supposedly they have to support us with updates and stuff for 18 months. The Note 3 has been out for almost a year, so we should still be getting 4.4.4 and L. I have a feeling they're going to skip 4.4.4 and go straight to L, which I will be avoiding at all costs.

AT&T/Samsung updates go in the direction of maximum corporate security, so unless you're the network admin for some company, probably not. (They want to turn your phone into the company's phone, so if you're not in the business of buying your employer a phone that they allow you minimal use of, Samsung is no longer the phone to buy.
Maybe if they lose enough business, they'll change their policy.

L= downfall of Android. Read up on it and you will see why. After the KitKat update fiasco earlier this year I've learned my lesson and plan to stay put on 4.4.2 until my Note 3 dies.

This is what I'm going to go with. L is a long ways away for Samsung devices. Look how long 4.4.4 has been out and we still haven't seen it. I wish it was different and AT&T had speedy updates but sadly that's not the case.

I'm saying L= bad because I've read rumors about how Google will be incorporating Knox or something like it into the source code. It'll be locked down tighter than NC2 and may be the end of root and ROMs. Supposedly even the Nexus 5 guys had a hard time rooting the L developer preview.
I'll wait and see if the rumors about L are true before moving away from Android. There's no way I'd be caught dead with an iPhone and Windows phones don't appeal to me.
I'll see if I can get you some links after work.

Adding "Knox" to the search helped a bunch. Here's a pretty good article:

Same for me. Much snappier feeling. It took quite a while to load some apps initially with 5.0. 5.1 is absolutely better. I'm an android Dev and have access to a lot of more expensive phones and am using this for its amazingly great battery (way better than my 2013 moto x . over double for my use ) and to hold me over until 2015 moto x. Not a bad phone all

There are 3 different 6045i firmwares in the stock image thread. You could have backed up one at a time till you got one that worked with google voice and didn't have other issues.
But wouldn't that negate the positive results of the most recent update (improved DTTW, etc.)?

For those who have rooted, I'm sure you will have to un-root in order to get this via OTA or follow famewolf's thread here.

Why would you be surprised? It is stock Android with no carrier certification required. Just patch and go...

But wouldn't that negate the positive results of the most recent update (improved DTTW, etc.)?

Depends on your priorities...I for one have no problem using hangout dialer for the calls I want to make over data which still works fine.
if they could fix the lags too
i was wondering, if we can't get ota update is it still possible to use the file update while being rooted?
hope this don't cause lags.. had the opposite result the last time I've updated..it was a mess
Well, I also use Hangouts Dialer and agree it's not a huge imposition. Still, no other handset I've ever used has had this bug, and I'd like the option of using the native dialer with GV. Regards from New Orleans...A.

Update: Alcatel has announced, via rep Jason Gerdon, that the upcoming update will include a fix for the Google Voice issue (and SMS time stamp inconsistencies).

Off topic. But how do you like or compare to the blu life one 2015?
I like the Blu Life One LTE quite a bit. Bought it for $99 off Amazon during a pre-order promotion, and have been using out to compare various carriers alongside my Idol 3. Considering that it has only 1 gig of RAM, it's remarkably smooth. Very bright 720p display, good battery life. A paltry 8g of onboard storage, but I'm an app minimalist, and it does take an optional SD card. Dual SIM capability which has come in handy, though you must choose between SD card or SIM 2.
The Idol 3 is considerably more powerful (600-class Snapdragon versus 400; 2 gigs of RAM, bigger, full HD display, etc.). Covers more LTE bands, including Band 12, which is important for T-Mobile users like myself. Substantially better speakers.
I'm somewhat of a phone hobbyist, and have been playing with a number of inexpensive handsets lately (these two and a Lumia 640 -- amazing phone for $100 or less). I've gained new respect for this class of handset. See little or no need to pay flagship prices. But I don't game, so don't tax a CPU as some other users might.
I've been using an HTC One M7 on Verizon, but an going to move to T-Mobile. Coverage is solid here in New Orleans, and for my family (four of us) it's vastly less expensive, with vastly more data.

Do you have a source for that bit of news? Are there any other fixes coming besides Stagefright, GV, and SMS timestamp issues?
Nevermind, found it. Source of his posting here.
Hi All --
Wanted to let you guys know a new software update for IDOL 3 users will be released on or around August 10. This update will initially be available to IDOL 3 customers in the U.S. and will address fixes for Google Voice and SMS time stamp issues experienced by some users, as well as a Google security patch for the Stagefright vulnerability. For IDOL 3 customers in Canada, we are working with our carrier partners and hope to have an availability update for this very shortly.

Posted a thread that should be useful to the folks who plan to revert to stock to install the update. http://forum.xda-developers.com/ido...e-custom-update-zips-to-t3175068?goto=newpost
I plan to give it a try and if it works I'll TRY to capture the 6045i update url as I did the previous updates..(I use a transparent squid proxy that all devices in my house go through to get to the internet. It allows me to intercept the url)..if I can get the update.zip downloaded I will make it available and perhaps some users will be able to sideload the update with less hassle.

That would be awesome. I'm in Canada and don't want to have to wait for my carrier to 'Ok' an update for a major security issue like this.
If that could be done for 6045k since I saw one user on this forum from Portugal with K model and 01003 update..
Meaning the update is pushed different from region to region..

Once someone who is un-rooted receives notification of this update, would you please post here letting us know the update has started to roll out? I don't think rooted users will get a notification of the update since we can't even check for one without getting a notification of being rooted.

So if I unroot to get this update, am I even going to be able to reroot?
I was really hoping I wouldn't have to mess around with anything more on this phone until CM is out for it.

Pretty sure you will still be able to re-root.
I can confirm that using the Full Unroot method via SuperSU works on this phone. I just ran it out of curiosity and followed the steps and SuperSU is gone from the app drawer and I am able to check for updates. See screenshots:
