Anyone tried either of these 'new technologies' on a G3 yet? Worth getting excited over?
I don't think that the g3 supports Volte yet. And t-mobile only updated the WiFi calling app as far as giving you the WiFi on the planes.

Sprint has it but I havnt even tried it. I know after an update the m8 got that enabled it, it was eating battery pretty bad. I'll post back if and when I check it out.
I was on a phone call and using let. Isn't that volte? I'm on vzw g3

Probably not.
I'm on T-Mo (D851), and I recently took their update that supposedly upgraded the built-in Wifi-calling app. From what I understand, it just allowed us to send and receive text mssgs over Wifi. I went ahead and switched it on, and whatdayaknow, it works great!!! Wifi calling and texting are so much faster than my 2G service here at my house. Seriously, I can send MMS in seconds. It used to take FOREVER to send out a picture on 2G.
I can't comment on VoLTE, seeing as how I'm rarely in LTE coverage area, but VoWIFI is well worth the update.
Note: I successfully rooted my D851 w/Stump a few moments AFTER the update, so all is good in life. :good:
I am on a Verizon G3, and updated Voice, Hangouts, and added Hangouts Dialer. I am excited now that when I give out my Google Voice number folks can call me on any of my phones under any SIM as a song as I have data. This means The T-Mobile $30 gig 100 minutes plan now has essentially unlimited calling minutes and texts, and so does my grandfathered Verizon unlimited data plan.

Besides using your minutes, you've always been able to do that with Google Voice.
Ya, but this integrates so much better than before. The old Google voice app was pretty buggy.
Sent from my LG-D851 using XDA Free mobile app
WiFi Voice and full integration into Hangouts was only available on iOS before. I used an iPOD with WiFi only to make and receive calls on Voice last year. Google just added that to Android. No more need for voice minutes for A,droid users with either wireless data or WiFi.

From everything I've read, VoLTE uses a lot of power, and drains your battery rapidly. I haven't personally had the option to use it, however.
I've used VOIP (WiFi calling) on several phones, without any carrier requirement. The GrooVIP app works with any carrier, as long as you have WiFi. You do need to set up a different phone number to use with it, but that's the only issues I've had.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.snrblabs.grooveip
I've seen a few carriers calling it HD Voice, which would make more sense to users. Haven't heard about battery drainage though. It shouldn't drain any more than regular LTE.

so as everyone knows knows T-mobile started to throttle speeds once a user passes 5GB of data. Well here is how to go back to unthrottled speeds.
Simply click menu-> settings -> Wireless & networks -> mobile networks
then you are going to want to click to use only 2G networks. Click back and wait till it connects to edge.
then go back and uncheck Use only 2G networks
(must repeat upon reboot)
You should now be connected to an throttled 3G network. Personally i was getting about 60 kbps before i did it and after i get around 2000 kbps.

Lol... guys, you do know there is already a thread about this in development, right?
You guys really need to learn to use the search button before posting duplicate threads.
I already had someone steal my work today but this looks unintentional and is a far inferior method to disabling the data cap (aka throttle). Check out development if you want a more permanent method...

This comes to show me just how little data one gets with Verizon and AT&T. Wow, one large download or 3 Netflix movie and you're done for the month!! No thanks I'll pass. You guys could show off all your network speeds all you want, at the end of the day who gives a **** how fast you go if you can't really use it for anything without going over your limit. I'll stay with Sprint and my unlimited data. Being on the list of the first to get LTE also helps my decision to stay with sprint.

It's impossible to support millions of customers on a network without it straining. They prioritize quality of the network over unrestricted access. So it works great for as long as you're allowed to use it, or pay overages.

Hey, I'm currently working with a HTC HD2 with a Froyo Android on it and having difficulties in the basement.
I've recently moved into a new rental house (am a University student) and was given a room in the basement (not much choice there since I signed up late for housing). Anyways I've noticed I get 1-2 bars in the basement which is fine (so I thought) but I'm not receiving any text or phone calls! Whenever I walk outside with my phone there's multiple texts waiting for me and whenever I meet my parents they question why I never pick up the phone (I dont even have missed calls showing).
Now with my closest friends I have whatsapp/fb chat/google talk which is fine but for employers who I give my resume to, or friends I occasionally meet up with they have no way to contact me :S so was wondering if there's any way to boost my signal in the basement?
I've read about a few signal boosters and repeaters but they are costing hundreds of dollars which is out of my price range but really do need to fix something or my social life is going down the drain next semester :S
Thanks in advance
forgot to mention, it wont even send texts as well at two bars... so sad T__T

Maybe AT&T will have better signal and you can just switch to like Straight Talk.

Signal booster apps are a scam. I hope you didn't pay for it.
You should connect it to a strong wifi network and use wifi calling.

Hey, no didn't pay for it but I personally disagree. It feels like it does help (although the difference isn't very much)
And yea was debating on going pure WiFi but seems like a lot of hassle to have two different numbers, or is there a way to keep same number?? Sorry not very sure how WiFi networks work, if you could recommend a good one that'd be great

Most T-Mobile smartphones have built in wifi calling. No porting or different numbers. You just connect to a wifi network and enable it in the settings.

This is just a general question to all heavy data users regardless of carrier. I'm just curious because when I called to check on my plan the customer service rep was flippin out and said I'm in the TOP 1 percent of data users. I have service with Verizon wireless and thankfully I have unlimited data still. Just looks like I'm not upgrading anytime soon

How do you use all that data??? I have a 1gb data plan and usally never went much further than 800mb!!!
It's got to be torrents. No way can someone consume 100gb of data without video files lol. I download nightlies every day on my drive from work and even with all my app updates via cell signal I never go over 5-8gb's.
I can't find any info on this, but does anyone here travel along interstates with T-Mobile? I recently traveled from Boise, Idaho to Pocatello, Idaho and back. I only had data 2% of the time on the interstate. When I look at the coverage map, it says I should have at least 2G in-network the whole way, yet most of the time I only had voice signal or EDGE with no data connectivity.
I copied my friends Note II APN settings yesterday, I will see if that works for next time I travel there.
Is this typical for T-Mobile, or is there something up with my APN?

EDGE is 2G. It allows data connectivity, albeit the slow kind. I have found that to be pretty standard with T-mobile. Once you get out of the big metropolitan areas your service goes to crap.
Yeah, I get EDGE/2G a lot on interstate drives.
The lack of data connectivity when on EDGE is something I run into pretty frequently and I think is either a Nexus 4 radio issue or just T-Mobile being T-Mobile.

Its tmo. Their edge is basically useless for anything except push notifications
Seems about normal for road trips on T-Mobile...
From Phoenix to Detroit I used i17 to 40 to 44 to 75 I was with out data for a total of fifteen min and 80 percent had great 3g rest of time was on edge or roaming edge. I was using the my touch 4g back a little over two years ago
Roaming in the us doesn't cost you anything on tmobile contract
Also I used Google navigation the whole way to. It was a pleasant experience. I did have a att phone from work that worked the whole way however is was a feature phone not smart phone

I've taken to pre-downloading areas in Google Maps when I know I will be going through areas where I won't have reception / data. This totally sucks, but it is a workaround when using it for navigation.
This spring break I drove from Houston to Denver. I would go quite some time without data and roamed a good percentage of the time when I finally got to Colorado. On the way back I took a different route through New Mexico and I had data majority of the time I was awake (had another driver) and even got 4G in some random cities in the middle of nowhere.

EDGE with no data connectivity? Sounds like you're going faster than 55mph. Gotta slow down to be able to use EDGE
Members please stop this back and forth....Thread Cleaned, Thank You.
Thank you for the replies. That's too bad, I really hope T-Mobile rolls out HSPA to cover their EDGE network. I guess if I am on a 4 line family plan, it is only 40 bucks a month for unlimited everything. I could get a prepaid Jetpack from Verizon and get 10 GB of data for $80 a month, and that pretty much is the same as what I would be paying on Verizon for 6 GB of data with a Verizon phone.
$40 (TM) + $80 (VZW; when necessary - no contract) for unlimited intercity and 10GB intracity + whatever phone I want (Nexus 4).
or
$120 (VZW) for 6 GB everywhere with 2 year contract + a locked phone.
I could also set up Tasker to automatically connect to the Jetpack when I have no data signal on T-Mobile, then disconnect when I regain data.
Still not a bad deal, I think I'll go with option A until T-Mobile upgrades EDGE.
