T-mobile along interstates - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I can't find any info on this, but does anyone here travel along interstates with T-Mobile? I recently traveled from Boise, Idaho to Pocatello, Idaho and back. I only had data 2% of the time on the interstate. When I look at the coverage map, it says I should have at least 2G in-network the whole way, yet most of the time I only had voice signal or EDGE with no data connectivity.
I copied my friends Note II APN settings yesterday, I will see if that works for next time I travel there.
Is this typical for T-Mobile, or is there something up with my APN?

EDGE is 2G. It allows data connectivity, albeit the slow kind. I have found that to be pretty standard with T-mobile. Once you get out of the big metropolitan areas your service goes to crap.

Yeah, I get EDGE/2G a lot on interstate drives.
The lack of data connectivity when on EDGE is something I run into pretty frequently and I think is either a Nexus 4 radio issue or just T-Mobile being T-Mobile.

Its tmo. Their edge is basically useless for anything except push notifications

Seems about normal for road trips on T-Mobile...

From Phoenix to Detroit I used i17 to 40 to 44 to 75 I was with out data for a total of fifteen min and 80 percent had great 3g rest of time was on edge or roaming edge. I was using the my touch 4g back a little over two years ago
Roaming in the us doesn't cost you anything on tmobile contract
Also I used Google navigation the whole way to. It was a pleasant experience. I did have a att phone from work that worked the whole way however is was a feature phone not smart phone

I've taken to pre-downloading areas in Google Maps when I know I will be going through areas where I won't have reception / data. This totally sucks, but it is a workaround when using it for navigation.

This spring break I drove from Houston to Denver. I would go quite some time without data and roamed a good percentage of the time when I finally got to Colorado. On the way back I took a different route through New Mexico and I had data majority of the time I was awake (had another driver) and even got 4G in some random cities in the middle of nowhere.

EDGE with no data connectivity? Sounds like you're going faster than 55mph. Gotta slow down to be able to use EDGE

Members please stop this back and forth....Thread Cleaned, Thank You.

Thank you for the replies. That's too bad, I really hope T-Mobile rolls out HSPA to cover their EDGE network. I guess if I am on a 4 line family plan, it is only 40 bucks a month for unlimited everything. I could get a prepaid Jetpack from Verizon and get 10 GB of data for $80 a month, and that pretty much is the same as what I would be paying on Verizon for 6 GB of data with a Verizon phone.
$40 (TM) + $80 (VZW; when necessary - no contract) for unlimited intercity and 10GB intracity + whatever phone I want (Nexus 4).
or
$120 (VZW) for 6 GB everywhere with 2 year contract + a locked phone.
I could also set up Tasker to automatically connect to the Jetpack when I have no data signal on T-Mobile, then disconnect when I regain data.
Still not a bad deal, I think I'll go with option A until T-Mobile upgrades EDGE.

T-Mobile Network Issues

Hey, anyone else have network issues with the N1 today? Seems like none of my calls or texts are going through, but I have signal and everything. I went outside to use 3g, worked for a little and then stopped.. So I did a airplane off/on and now the data wont connect. Went back inside it connected again but text and calls wouldnt work.
Anyone else having any issues?

You need to provide more info like your general location. It might be a local issue or trouble with your phone.
I was on my phone all day in calls and data with no problems. I'm in the Chicago area.
Hi.. I have troubles with T-Mobile on 3G... but supposedly there is an issue with my mast in NR1.. I agree...where are you?

Have you tried turning the phone off then back on? I run into this problem every once in a while. So have others:

In Orlando, Fl ever since Hsdpa rolled out here If been getting little to no 3g here, spoke to a tmob rep and he saying something about no longer connecting to at&t's frequencies so data loss is possible, idk but it needs to get resolved its been a couple of weeks.
i had the same problem yesterday. It only happened to me at home when i left running around town i was able to connect for data. Also it was raining here so maybe that contributed to it

tell me about it man, I was in Orlando this weekend and 3G connection su*ks, since I was using my phone as GPS it was very frustrating. I started messing around with build.prop like crazy but nothing worked.
Happens to me all the time. Especially around evening times. 3-6pm. This is in seattle btw.

I've only had issues in my house, but that's because my house is a service-killer. No bars anywhere downstairs, but almost full 3G bars in my room. lol
Have you tried the new 5.XX series radios yet? I'm running 5.08 and notice little to no data loss or other data issues. There are moments of weirdness, but a quick disable/enable of mobile data does the trick in the most severe of situations.
Gonna upgrade to 5.12 now and see what's different (apparently touchscreen ****ty-ness is fixed). Worth a shot. Use fastboot though, never flash a radio in recovery, leaves too much up to chance.
I feel ya.. I was in universal last night and I had 4-5 bars of 3g and no internet, or at least really slooooow internet when it did work. T mobile needs to ramp up Orlando's and others servers/towers. When too many people use the internet at the same time it kills the towers bandwidth. While at Universal's Horror nights I figure everyone in the 45min-2Hr lines for the houses are using it. So that is bad. But once I left Orlando it worked fine.
Had Froyo Radio... Flashed new 5.12 today one and seems better. At least Agps is working much better.
Glad to know it's not just me. I had been searching on the Internet for people with the same issues and decided to come here. I'm in stl and my data connection will either work or not. Ive tried turning off the phone and then back on, airplane, etc.
Right now it works but it's nowhere near the 4 megs i was pulling last night, its hovering around 500 Kbps when it decides to work. Im sure tmobile is just upgrading some stuff.
Looks like its just Orlando where problem exists.

So yesterday I got a email form att telling me that they would be doing cell tower maintaince in my zip code area. and I could have cell interruption from 5pm to 8pm cst. So my phone weren't crazy on searching for singal, no signal, h+ so on....and when I went to our cabin that night my cell service has always been on edge with 2 bars, when I looked at my phone I had H+ and did a speed test and I a upload speed of 900+ till it went crazy again searching for signal.
Today I called att tech sport and the guy I talked to was probley the nicest one I have talk to, and he spoke english!!! I asked him about my phone getting 900+ in upload for a few min and back to 300 today. He said that att was upgrading the cell tower in my area to handle backhaul, hsupa. And lte and so on... And won't be fully avaibile till a couple of months. And that it's in the radio of 4g phones is the reason of the upload speeds begin slow and that full hsupa. Hspa+, and lte was slightly differnt radio signals and when att has upgraded fully on the cell towers that hsupa, and hspa+ will be full effect in my area and my phone would auto pick it up, And that there shouldnt be no patch I do on my phone. And went on saying that 4g phones were realased before they should have been. Kinda like buying tires for a car that u aint bought yet.
That's just what he told me.???

And while you were listening to this story did you ask why the iPhone has had HSUPA speed since launch?
Believe what you want, but when speedtest shows you HSUPA upload speeds, then report back.
He is talking 4G - we all know that 4G requires backhaul modifications - none of what he told you addresses HSUPA deficiencies.
Nice to hear. Hopefully its true.

Just put pictures in my first post. All he said about iphone was that it was in contact from apple to att for att not to disable data performance. Dont know of any truth to it. And also to add that all other 4g phones radios were differant to keep from cell tower over load till cell tower upgrade is complete.
I'm just a messanger.

4G Speeds!!

I generally get decent 4G speeds; anywhere from 3-5mbps down and 800-1400 kbps upload. I haven't checked in a while until today and I noticed my download speeds are significantly better. Not sure if it is just today, but I am averaging between 7-9 mbps download. Did anyone else notice better data speeds today?

Hopefully Sprint did some work because my 4g is all over the place and if I'm lucky I can get 3mbps
I'd test if I could. I live in a "excellent" coverage area... but alas no 4G. Outside I'll barely be able to connect. Maybe 10-15s on "poor" signal strength.
Anyway, enjoy!
How do you test it?
Edit....figured it out
Spectacles, Testicles, Wallet & Watch
My 4g Speed is awful below my 3g speeds and i can never stay connected more then 30 seconds.
I live in seattle which is suppose to have good coverage
People with Wimax issues:
Do you have the wimax latest radio version?
Have you tested wimax in your area on a different phone?
Also, Clearwire maintains wimax, not Sprint.
I live in Kansas City, so i get pretty good 4g coverage almost everywhere. as far as speeds go im typically hitting 10mbps. sometimes as low as the upper 7s
at work i can usually hit 15mbps, I'll post pics. My friend has a T-bolt and always gets so jealous haha. But I've heard Boise was one of the first to get 4g, idk why
According to Sprints coverage map I live in an excellent 4g area, now in real life that is not true. I called them not to long ago about my lack of 4g an connection issues and they did a service call, recorded radio numbers signal strength and all that jazz. A few days later I get a call from Sprint saying that the area I live in does not receive 4g very well (duh) and they notified Clear Wire about the issue etc. etc.
In short I live in a ****ty area but their (Sprint) map shows this magic blanket of 4g coverage that is not accurate by any standard. I have all the latest and greats radios etc but its just a no go for me. Sorry end of rant.
4G is available all over my city except a 2 block radius around my house.... F YOU SPRINT...Reception is complete crap at my house that I have to Force Roaming too...
According to Sprint I live outside a 4G area. But when I'm upstairs in my bedroom I can parely pull in a signal. It was enough to save me last night though. Comcast came in for a preinstall and accidentally cut my Verizon line, so I have no hardline internet at the moment. Its nice to have at least some connection to the outside world in the meantime.
I live in Phoenix, Az and we have no 4G out here.... I wonder if and when they will turn on the 4G out here. I hate paying the extra 10.00 a month and I cant use the 4G
Well I don't know how to post pics on here but my test says
8/18/2011
Download 8007 kbps
Upload 1447 kbps
Ping 211 ms
Is this good?..

No matter the time of day, .40 Mbps is "typical" for download, .20Mbps for upload. That's on good days. I'm aware of all the factors that affect speeds, I just felt the need to vent about it for once.
I live on an island in the puget sound in washington state and 3G reception here is horrid. And that's after they've made some upgrades to our towers. I really don't understand why our service isn't better considering I live within miles of a major navy installation (Whidbey NAS).
Been on Sprint's Everything Data plan since August 2010 with my EVO 4G, which also requires the additional $10 charge for 4G capabilities (the nearest place I get 4G reception is over 30 miles away). I feel like I'm really having it stuck to me in the pocketbook.
If I don't have WiFi reception wherever I'm at, I typically wont even bother with 3G unless I have to. I'm more likely to just leave it off to save battery life.
Okay I'm done ranting, thanks for listening.

I understand your frustration but i only get speeds like that when i get to work and everyone else shows up(2000+ people).
I am in a plant with a big project going on and it never fails at 6am the speed starts to plummit and stays that way all day. Until everyone leaves of course.
I feel for you putting up with that every waking moment though.
And please do respond on if you use the verizion hack, if it helps or not.

I had almost decided to move on to another carrier for the same reason. I looked at www.network.sprint.com and it showed a data speed upgrade withing 6 months. Didn't know if they would come through but they did 2 days ago. Now is decent.
Btw...check that site. For weeks my data was crippled worse than it use to. Maybe because they were working on it I guess....but now is good. I guess patience is key.

Same here.
I don't think you are the only one. I came to this forum today to see if anyone else was having this issue. I'm also in Washington (Bellevue) and I used to get about 1,000 kbps and decent reception. Lately I'm lucky if I have 1 bar of 1x speed. My speeds are just as bad as yours. How is your signal strength?

You're one of the lucky ones. I'm INCREDIBLY lucky to even get 1mb. My 3g is pretty much useless and LTE is nowhere to be found.
4g is finally hitting Colorado Springs. I've found it in quite a few places, I've even been picking up signal at my work. Nothing at home yet unfortunately. My best speed has been about 10 Mbps down. Seems they are growing the network pretty fast.

Like all carriers, it depends on where you live. Here in Dallas-Ft Worth, the service is good for the most parts. Yeah there are some parts of the metroplex where service can get spotty but for the most part, no complaints. That said, i'm done after the last 6 months of my contract. Going to a GSM carrier since i switch phones so much. My wife and son will remain on Sprint.
I went to Sprint from Verizon 2 yrs. ago for the price. (Before VZW had their family share plans). The data was painfully slow where I live in central NC. 4g lte is non existent and 3g will hardly load a web page. There are cities around me that have fairly good data speeds but for the most part, it's frustratingly slow. I went back to VZW this year and it is so nice to have fast data and a reliable signal wherever I go. As with everything, it all depends on the individual circumstances. Sprint gets bashed because they deserve it in most of those cases.

Yeah, they've made good improvements to your east in Raleigh. It was very hit or miss earlier, but now things are much improved with their network. Going around the mountains are the only place where I've been without reliable signal, but that's to be expected (even a Verizon phone had no signal there). Definitely interested to see, though, if Roam Control will work for the Moto X on 3G.
If only Sprint would go ahead and release KitKat, though. But that's a whole other story...
Right on queue, here comes KitKat. My wife likes her X, and we used to be on the 3g slow boat. LTE is amazing though... Sprint is really stepping up their game lately.

LTE is nowhere to be found in Queens, NY and there are a lot of dead spots on Long Island as well. My phone has become useless on vacation in ny. My friend on tmobile has been on LTE the whole time. 3G is basically 1x rebranded
Sprint makes me sad and the fact they may very well buy T Mobile makes me want to cry.
great 4G around Miami except for, irritatingly, the airport. Of course, waiting for a plane to depart is the time I'd most like to stream Netflix, MLB At-bat, Hulu etc.
Any luck with roam control
