[Q] Battery issues/questions - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, I've been having some battery issues lately and I can't really tell why. I haven't been doing anything too extreme, but my battery is almost dead within 12 hours of a charge, and the highest usage is mostly the Kernel and/or OS. I know next to nothing about that side of things, so I exported reports from GSam, and I'm hoping someone will be able to translate them for me if there's an obvious problem. Thanks in advance!
(I've also uninstalled Boxer, I only had it because Pro was free yesterday.)

Keep the location enabled.
Are you using any of the smart stay/air view etc. controls?
If not turn them ALL off.

As far as I know, location is always turned on (meaning I never turn it off myself). One of the first things I did was turn off all the smart crap, and turn off every piece of bloatware I could in the settings (I'm not rooted).

When was the last time that your phone was restarted?

I usually restart it every other day, give or take. It's gone a couple days without it before. I don't usually have it off for more than a couple minutes at a time though.

This is beginning to sound much more complicated.
Did you install any apps recently?
How old is the phone?
Also do you have data/wifi on all the time?

That's not good. :-/
I install apps often, but I just as often uninstall them...I guess that's not much help. If it was one of them though, wouldn't it show up under the battery log?
It's approaching a year old, I got it last November I believe.
Yes, I keep my Wifi and data on all the time.

Bad network will drain your battery. Check how the signal is.

Android OS and Kernel are normal between 12-25% on 4.4.2. It's an issue with the battery reporting.
It looks like you've got a wakelock. 12% per hour means it's not going into deep sleep.
Check Wakelock Detector to see if it's going into deep sleep or not. (It needs root for everything else, but that still works.)

Stated in reply post that the phone is not rooted.
My advice will be to uninstall apps one at time to find the one causing the drain.

And neither is mine. Wakelock detector still works in the tab that shows Deep Sleep vs Awake. As I said by 'Everything else requires root, but that still works'.

That varies. At home, I have great signal (full-signal 4G, router is never more than 20 feet away). Some places in town, I can drop to 3G, especially my grandparents (although my grandma does have a router I'm connected to). There's a weird (unrelated?) bug where if I drop to 3G, I either have to turn airplane mode on or wait several hours until it reverts back to 4G, even though I'll be back in a verified 4G area.

I will definitely check that out and use it tonight. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll get back to you on what it says. What generally causes the wakelocks, specific apps? Or just poorly set-up preferences?

Usually apps. Facebook, Skype, some games. Although Mediascanner(Android process) is also known to be responsible for it quite often.

It looks like PayPal was one of the culprits? For some reason?
I did find out I could root extremely easily, so did so and downloaded Greenify, so I'm hoping I can tweak enough to get my battery life back.

That does seem to be the case... Either uninstall paypal or drop it in the Greenify list.
Google Search is probably either the widget or you're using Google Now.

By widget, do you mean the search bar? I use Nova, and I've removed that, so it must be Google Now. I don't use it often, but it does leave me weather cards and shipping info, so would that be it?

I don't think they're related, but I can't be a hundred percent sure. You can try disabling both Google Search ones under apps -> all, see what that does to the info updates. If it scrambles them, just turn them back on.
(There's two Google Search, one is the search bar, the other is the app related to it.)
With that and Paypal dealt with, battery life should improve significantly.

Happy to help Let's hope that solves it! Also don't forget to greenify Paypal (Or uninstall it if you don't need it), as that seems to be the main culprit.

Battery life in SwiftDroid (may apply to other ROMs too).

Hai,
Since nobody bothered to answer my call to track down what drains the battery I decided to just post my findings and you do with it whatever you like...
In recent couple of months I've been experiencing quite nice battery life, almost a week on standby, which is basically on par with original LG ROM. The trick is simple:
It's happening as long as the Gallery app is NOT running.
I don't know what this piece of software does but when it's loaded to memory it stays in there and ignores attempts to terminate it, doesn't sleep when phone wants to and eats battery in a matter of single day. Unfortunately it seems some other apps use it directly or indirectly, like when Wi-Fi starts and/or by Market for example. Thus my solution is just to force close the Gallery after I finish activities which seem to require it.
I don't know whether root of the problem is with the app itself (like, CM modifications made so it's more cool, at the price) or it's just something else unearthed by certain SwiftDroid's configuration. To anyone who wishes to furher investigate my sincerest good luck. And I'd be grateful if results were published too.

You do with your phone what it damned pleases you. In case you haven't noticed the battery life is most often reported as either standby time or call time. In my typical usage battery lasts no less than two or three days but what 'typical usage' means may mean totally different things to me and to you.

Hm, even more shotgun approach to what I described. Having user data could be the primary reason for keeping the app installed. But thanks for tip anyway, may come handy one day.
There is gr8 app on xda, better batery state. With this app you can see what aplication keep wake lock, use cpu, gps, etc...

"sns_periodic_wakelock" killing battery

Hey,
I'm running stock nexus 4. I have been having terrible 8 hour battery life with "Android OS" taking up all the battery in battery status. BetterBatteryStats tells me that "sns_perioidic_wakelock" and "sns_async_ev_wakelock" is using up most of the battery. See attached. Any idea what apps are causing this?

I'm pretty sure I've seen those wakelocks when making a lot of phone calls. Seems likely related to cell radio use some how, but that's just a guess.

Actually the crazy thing is that i have airplane mode with wifi on most of the day cause I have really bad service. And I only have 100 minutes of talk, so I never talk on the phone.

Just checked mine and those wakelocks are really low today despite several phone calls, I've been on wifi all day though. The right way to figure those wakelocks out is to download the kernel source from one of the devs github and do some searches through the source to see where those wakelocks are logged. You might also search the battery impression thread in general, some smart folks have dissected many kernel wakelocks in there. Seems weird that you would have them in airplane mode.

I have the exact same issue. Wakelocks/Android OS killing my battery (Android OS usually 45% or higher when it should be my screen that is the biggest battery sucker).
I barely use my phone to make phone calls as well. I'd say 1 call every 2 or 3 days.
Same exact wakelocks here. I made 0 phone calls. There is defiantly something up.
I had these two wakelocks too and it turned out to be my live wallpaper that was causing it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35277041&postcount=20
Same wakelocks on my N4....
Solution in my case, delete widget locker....... My Nexy sleeps again:angel:
exact same situation: N4, sns wakelocks killing battery, phone not deep sleeping. culprit? Shake 'n Rotate! app. so add that one to the blacklist as well!
Are any of you running stock kernel and ROM?

Im Running stock kernal and Rom and i still get sns_periodic_wakelock and sns_async_ev_wakelock Does anyone have any idea what they are or what causes them or how to fix? They seem to be on the whole time my phone is on and they suck battery crazy not as bad as most but my android os is always 2nd battery use to my screen or more depending on how i use it and it sucks cause i know i would have pretty awesome battery life if these were fixed or gone. I appreciate any help!
Apparently you can also add: lightflow vibrate on pickup feature and adding a widget to the lock screen..
PowerManagerService and sns periodic wakelock are my main culprits but I'm not sure these numbers mean there's an issue or not...
I just checked BBS for todays use and I have on 9h use 4h on sns_periodic_wakelock. I have been using DashClock on my lockscreen. I will remove that and post back later to see if that helped.:cyclops:
Hmm can anyone say if this looks problematic?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Yes it does look problematic.
Basically sns_periodic_wakelock kept the device from sleeping for almost three hours.
I have the same issue and don't know what's causing it.
EDIT: Apparently live wallpapers do.
Just writing back to tell you guys how it went. I removed DashClock from my lockscreen and that wakelock seemed to be gone for a few days.
I then later updated the app, and just by updating it, I think it caused the wakelock. This time I'm uninstalling and checking if it comes back again.
Is there a known list of apps suspected of causing this?

Sns is related to facebook. If you use Titanium backup, go to apps and you can see a blue icon with a letter f on it that looks like facebook letter and labelled sns. Uninstall that and your lovely nexus 4 will enjoy its sleeeeep....

Android System using too much battery

Hi,guys!
I can't figure out why the Android System is using more battery than others. I feel like it is awful.2 hours and17 minutes of off the charger time and I'm at 86% with wifi-on and leave my phone on airplane . I have been spending most of my time trying to find ways to save battery and it is barely working, or at best working inconsistently. I might need to try a replacement. What do you guys think?
Does anybody knows how to fix it? I'm out of ideas.
I had the same problem on my moto x. I had to uninstall all the updates to anything google related.

its the same with my s5, after all day when i check my battery stats android system uses the most battery. i'm trying all things to sort it out
Yes, sync troubles… I think that too…

I don't have it quite as bad but removing carrier IQ has helped a bit, Go get system tuner and go into app mgr and find android system press details then open and go through activities, receivers and services and make sure everything you see that says IQAgent gets unchecked. This will help you stay out of ServiceIQ's eyes and also help your battery as your entire phone is debugged through those apps.(Another words I can't find the darn post that I used to help me)

I have prepared a short guide to do that if it would help you... Here is the link...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2799642
How exactly is this bad? The guy has close to 30 minutes for 10% of battery life, so proportionally close to 5 hours total screen on time for a full charge and this is supposed to be abnormal? Screen on time is purely on what you should base yourself first because you have no idea on what the phone reports as "Android system". As far as I know, if you had 5 minutes of screen on time instead of 30, that would be a problem worth investigating....but 30 minutes for 10%? You should not try to find issue where there are none.
Let me show you why you can't rely on phone stats. Here is my screenshot for today. Just from looking at it, you can already see i have some kind of huge wakelock problem, severe battery drain, especially if you consider I only have about 1h15 minutes of screen on time. Anybody looking at this could see that there is a problem with my phone. The fact is, there isn't. I had a 4h16 hour conversation today, but, my phone only reports voice calls taking up 12% of my battery life. Thats because other features are not included in the voice calls tab, like how the sensors have to always check if i'm close or not to the screen to turn it on or off, or the fact that it has to manage my wifi connection while using my mobile connection that is about 1 bar in my room. There are too many unknown factors to solely rely on what you see here, or on OPs screenshot. If you have 30 mins of screen time, and have 10% battery drain, thats fantastic. Don't forget, only 1 gen ago, having 3 hours of screen time with a full charge was awesome.
Now, I am doing what I read from a guide. I just plug it in every night and only use Ultra Power Saving in the day. From the guide,I would have full internet, phone and message capabilities with maximum battery life each day. Then I can leave off UPS on weekends and holidays to enjoy all the other apps.

Battery draining on stock rom.

I bought this phone few days ago and after some using noticed that battery drains really fast with WiFi/Mobile data. I downloaded Greenify and hibernated all apps using network. I turned off Sync, NFC, Energy saving on, screen brightness really low, gps, bluetooth still it drains with 2-4h using WiFi or mobile data(3g).
Can anyone think of something that drains my battery so fast? Thanks for any help!

Sounds like you either have a process that's preventing your phone from going into deep sleep, or your battery is malfunctioning. Try checking your sleep states with an app like BetterBatteryStats and see if your device goes into sleep mode properly.
P.s. My device lasts ~2 days with medium usage, always connected to the internet with either 3g or WiFi,and I'm not even using Greenify or anything similar, so the battery life is generally pretty decent.

Check the partial wakelocks screen. You should be able to locate the app that's causing the problem there. Also, I've read somewhere that cleaning the cache (either through Storage Settings or recovery) helps.

Well, it looks like that AudioMix process is causing your problems. I did a google search and found this thread that might help you.

Google Battery drain

Got my mate 7 A few weeks ago. Love it. Getting awesome sot (8.5) the last charge mainly using mobile data..
But today google contact sync is draining so much battery. I've exported and deleted all contacts from google. Disabled back up my phone in settings and even disabled the app in settings and it still opens... I don't really want to have to root it. Any ideas I may not have tried?
Also wonder,my phone is rooted though, well, didn't want to freeze any Google services but some features like backup system is stubbornly running even after disable in settings. Don't know any good medicine from this issue.

Yes I know that. The thing that drives me crazy is that I have no control over running background apps, like backup, that were disabled via Google provided interface. This is type of cheating to have an interface that doesn't do much.

I've got same ... even more 40mAh
you know what you can do go to setings -> google account -> tap account where numbers are synced from -> disable sync contacts
see if that helps
I froze with TB google app, then defrozed it and converted to user app, also didnt enable google now service, after all I have drain 10% per 6 hours at night, while phone is on extreme battery mode and just laying on the night stand without anyone touching it. Screen on time is impressive but battery drains while screen is off.

Mine is also draining too much energy while screen is off. Like 100% to 55%!! All in a matter of 10 hours and a half.
Have you fixed this particular issue yet?
Please see my case here:

It did solve the problem temporary, however my phone died (not related reason) warranty replaced the phone and new one, uprooted, doesn't have that issue any more.

How did you fixed it temporarily?
But the one million dollar question is: How much battery is lost while idle overnight?
This is the real question I think, because in all my tests, no matter the build version, I have got l least 5 hours of SOT (17 hours of use in total), which is not bad,
but most people get at least 7 hours SOT (in some 30+ hours) I guess I use it too frequently.
So, that would be the main question.
Please, do try to answer and tell us. Thank you!

I have already told it in this discussion, I have frost (later removed actually) google app system application, and fresh installed it from the market as user app.
As I said earlier though, now I use unrooted phone with locked bootloader, in completely original state (except I use tsf shell and disabled all unused system apps) and no longer have any problem with battery.

Guys I noticed that now phone drains battery faster when just browsing internet..
Had 20% and after 10 mins got 15%
Why it is so draining .. it is just browsing pages.. no video no audio at all..
