[FIX][ROOT] G3 audio port problems explained - G3 General

EDIT: FIX!
It seems someone on Reddit (@Karolis-hex") has figured out a simple software fix for this. Thanks to @gok90 for sharing the reddit post and @codified for re-writing the fix below:
On your rooted phone, make a backup of the file
system\usr\keylayout\generic.kl
Then edit it to comment out the line beginning "key 226" - i.e. change
Code:
key 226 HEADSETHOOK
to
Code:
#key 226 HEADSETHOOK
Restart your phone
You may lose some headset functionality - the volume controls and mic on the LG Quadbeats still work, but the middle button doesn't seem to do anything any more.
This is my theory as to why the port is so messed up. Basicly the G3 will happily accept any 3.5mm jack that has 3 channels. If you use a cable with 2 channels (Most aux cables and earphones without a mic or buttons) the phone will not play along. Even if the 2 channel jack works originaly, it will change songs, pause music etc as the jack is moved, or it simply wont work at all. If you have this problem and you need aux offten as I do, get a 3 channel extension lead (the blue cable below) it will make sure that 3 channels enter the G3's port, even if you are using a 2 channel jack.
Ps: Im not sure if you guys figured this or not before now, i'm just sharing a tip :good:

For me and a few others, using an aux cable only works 1 in 50 times, and some dual channel earphones dont work at all haha LG included earbuds in the D855 model ;o

I don't have any issue with the port on many d855 everything that I plug into it works without a problem

That's what im saying above, it aint everyone, but ive experienced it and seen allot of threads about it. Do your cables have 2 or 3 channels? If 3, then thats why you've had no problems. Eg, the earphones that come in the box work perfectly.

Glad this doesn't happen to me. My earbuds are 2 channel.
@sonspot The G3 does come with earbuds.

Time to try a 3 channel cable then. This is really frustrating. :/

Thanks!!! I was about to buy a new pair of headphones because I was having that behavior and I thought that they were broken.

No prob. It was pissing me off. I bought new earphones in Canada when I was there...they kept pausing and skipping songs, broke em, got new ones at home..the same happened xD SO I finally bought some JVC Gummy + ones and they work perfect. They also come with that extension cable in the photo.

I wonder if it's because my earbuds are like £250 earbuds... (thank you credit card points!).
Wasn't aware about some US variants not having earbuds... That's unfortunate, but I always prefer using better quality ones over the stock ones.

So basically a 3.5mm male to 3.5mm male audio cable is 3 channel if it includes a
Inline volume controller
or
Inline Noise Filter (aka ground loop)
Are there any other ones?

I've tested it with earbuds and two types of full-sized headphones without any problems. All with 2-Channels.
My Device is the D855

No. Those are 2 channel. They have a left, a right, and a common contact. Hence the three sections or rings. Three channels would have a fourth ring/section for the mic and/or track and volume controls. Hope this helps.

Yup. The G3's port must be designed to only work properly with jacks with 3 rings/channels.

Since I installed 10j on my d855 I haven't had the audio issues anymore. It flawlessly detects my 2 channel aux cable and it no longer
"pops" when changing tracks.
Just thought I would add my 2 cents.

TV Out! Read for another experience!

Hey all my android brethren! I am a modest if not intensive android tester/ researcher and this post is exclusively for the Samsung Vibrant. I have tested over 25 mainstream a/v out cables and have come up with one winner in stability, quality, and greatness haha! The winner is....GIGAWARE 3.5 A/V out cable for camcorders and other devices. The product number is...11A09 and the sku....040293024246. Radioshack has it...good hunti.g and watching your phone be more then what it is!
Update: The red input is actually the video i.e. yellow input, sorry everyone!!
Sounds more like a phone accessory more than phone development...but that might just be me...Thanks for your testing either way.

Sent from my SGH-T959 using Tapatalk
Checked the SKU and model # on RadioShack and nothing. A Google search produces ONLY this post. Anyone have any luck with this as I would like to find a cable that works well?
What I wasn't to know is why you can't watch Avatar through the tv out cable. I can watch anything on my phone through the cable except the movie. Suck

Issues with other cables include choppy video, freezing up on tv, and just plain not working at all.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Just cut the headphone cable and attach RCA cables to it,
Headphone Wire Color codes
Red - Speaker +
Green - Speaker +
White - Video +
Gold - All Ground connects on same cable.
And your done.. takes all of 20 secs
Note: Make sure to burn off coating on headphone cables, just take a match to each seperate cable.

DRM, and yes, it does suck. But you can work around it by encoding your own and deleting the one that came with the phone. There's even an app in the apps forum to provide the launcher.
I bought this cable about a month ago. it was 30 bucks from radio shack. albeit 10ft long. works good but picture quality is so so. I also bought the samsung hdmi cable but we all know how that went.
i tried the official apple av cable that came with my old ipod, and it worked perfect with my vibrant

Yellow is video - red is right speaker, white is left speaker. What you don't get is stereo sound.
lol, "extensive" testing? Seriously? These cables are composite, the quality will NOT be any better from one to the other. If you have signal issues, then the cable may be defective.
BTW, the audio coming out of the phone is near useless with the 3.5 out. I have to increase my audio on the TV to near max in order to hear comfortably.

Zune HD dock cables work
If your Zune HD owner with dock the Vibrant only needed 3 channel 3.5 mm. I found it out when I was watching some guy using the similar cable. Not HD though but it's a start.

Just got my (2nd) Galaxy S3

So I swapped my white one for a blue one... Got to say the blue looks unbelievable I'm pleased that I swapped it.
A few issues though, I never tried the headphones with my first one as I knew it was gonna get sent back. But now I've received this one I thought I would get them out. God they are absolutely pants! Comparing them to some old Iphone headphones the the qualify difference is unbelievable. Anyone else noticed that?
Secondly (random i know) any of you guys noticed Max Payne not being available on the Play store for the S3? I thought it was supposed to be one of the most powerful phones out there!

I'm more concerned about the 'noise' from the headphone jack! I dont get any pops/cracks like some others reported but theres a clear background noise >.<
This leaves me wondering if its even worth buying better headphones?
I like the Sennheiser MX580/581. Even after my neice messed with it and got it stuck to the baby carriage wheel its still working.
I don't think there should be background noise from the earbuds its self, its the fact that cellphone audio line is not fully isolated combined with low impedence of the earbuds. Also iem can bevery sensitive to little noises. You have to use headphones with higher impedence. Its hard to not get interference from the audio line out of a cellphone due to so many things going on compared to a dedicated mp3 player.
yeah I have noticed that max payne is not in the market....but it use to be there you know...because I bought it from there for my SGS3....now when I check it is not there.....strange....
Is it possible to buy it from the desktop and do your SIII show up in the compatible list for installation. Also is it a carrier branded device and which.

Headphones port and buzzing

Do you guys have problem with buzzing sound when using headphones? Also notice the jack not fully going in the port because of the way it was designed do you think this is the one causing it? I've tried different headphones but the buzz is still present specially when i'm typing

I was gonna make a thread similar to this. my headphones don't seem to work. they wont go in all the way. now I have like a lil surround sound system that has a headphone plug. now that works but I have to kinda play with the plug. It goes in more than headphones plug. I can't get my headphord to work. only surround sound system work. what is exact size of nexus 7 headphone jack? I wonder if it actually supposed to use the smaller size plug.
Is there buzzing when moving your finger around the screen? And when WiFi icon is animating (causing a clicking sound).
Mine does this, I'm thinking the screen is causing interference or something. Buzzing sound is still there with the device volume off, I have to turn down the volume on my hearing aid instead to avoid it, I use a special headphone lead that goes into the aid.
yes buzzing is mostly present when using the screen that's what I noticed. are you guys planning to return it? Did u complain to Google customer service?

I'm not sure they will do anything, I bought mine retail.
Something else I did was hold the 3.5mm jack against the mini-usb port, also hearing buzzing from touching the screen. Definitely some interference running through the connections.
On my 7 and Gnex the 3.5mm jack was a little stiff when I first used it. It should appear to be all the way in on the front but the back does have a pretty big gap. When I first used my headset on my GNex it was buzzing because I had not pushed it in all the way. The last click was VERY stiff. I did notice it on the 7 but not as much probably because I was expecting it. If it looks to be all the way in on the front then I would return it. I can confirm crystal clear audio on my n7 with no buzzing at all at any time. If your device has anything defective on it they should replace it. I purchased mine from staples and had a dead pixel on my first one and returned it immediately. Any where that sells this device(GameStop, OfficeMax, or staples) should have a return policy.
Also when the plug is in all the way it should be hard to spin. If its out just a little bit it will spin freely

i have buzzing/interference as well.
the interference is very, very minor when the device is not plugged in to the wall. however, when it is plugged in, the interference is almost unbearable. i can hear it change as i swipe the screen. if i'm listening to music and i turn the screen off, i get a really high pitched buzzing sound. the moment i turn the screen back on, it's back to the just generally crappy buzzing/static.
the shielding/grounding is pretty bad on this device. that being said, i can probably go without using it while charging it, but it's an inconvenience nonetheless.
I had a hard time getting my headphone jack to even work at all. This is my 2nd N7 , the first had a defective digitizer so I didnt want to return it... Eventually what I did was stick a needle in the jack and wiggle it around a bit. Poof ! My jack magically started working again .
Sent from my HTCEVODesign4G using xda app-developers app
I'm not sure if it's the same issue, but on the Galaxy Nexus, if you have touch sounds enabled, there's a high pitched buzz/whine each time you interact with the phone. It goes away if you disable it though. Again, I'm not sure if this is the same issue but give it a try.
i found when i first plugged in my headphones i hadnt pushed them in far enough... the socket is tight and takes more than that i'd call average force to get the the headphones in fully...
I'm also experiencing this on my Nexus 7 second gen. I have Bluetooth and WiFi on, and plugged into my vehicle aux port with a 3.5mm wire. The buzzing occurs when there is no music or audio passing through the 3.5, it gets worse when I touch the screen or slide on the screen. As soon as I start playing music its fine.
I'm trying to decide if I should return this unit and try a different unit or not.
I also have a new 3.5mm cable in the mail that I want to try as well.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
After unplugging the charger I've noticed a major reduction in the noise, buzzing, etc. Its not completely gone, but its better. Still wondering if anyone else has encountered this with gen 2 Nexus 7.

Yeah that's what you would think. Headphones work but auxiliary cables don't. The current workaround is using a headphone splitter and plugging regular headphones in one socket abd the aux cable to the car stereo in the other

OMG the best buy guy was right, the monster cable does give me better HD.... Dude just admit it, there is a pretty bad bug in that most cables dont work and the ones that do have popping sounds. The phone is also laggy. Think back to the froyo days, that's the way you feel using this phone. and the screen is dim. I'm not some troll, just someone who has owned this and the M8. Between the two I would still choose this one, but more so because the m8 has horrible battery life and an annoying power button that make its a pain to use.

Not sure what ur deal is slappy, but don't try to tell me how my phone acts. I have NO popping, or aux cable issues at all. It is what it is, take it or leave it. I just gave my experience with my phone, my truck, and what others have said. U started the thread, people here try to give input/advice, but if u already know everything why bother? If u don't like the phone, replace it with a device that u will be happy with. Very simple....
I don't have this issue at all. Plug into both a cassette adapter in my beater and an aux cable in my wife's minivan and both work flawless. I get an audible double beep when I plug in, the icon in the status bar shows I'm connected to Aux cable, and my podcasts and Spotify work flawlessly. Aux cable was $4 at the checkout counter of a Walmart and the cassette adapter was from my old XM dashboard receiver. Nothing fancy and no issues at all.

I have an iFrogz aux cable that I got from when I worked at Sprint. My T-Mo G3 works great in my car with that and another cable I have. Never had better sound. Works way better and sounds cleaner than my Nexus ever did.

Yep, all those people with car aux problems using cables that work with every other phone must be doing something wrong since your cable/car/phone combo works lol.

Wait... there were headphones in the box?1?! Will have to look when I get home on Friday, I just pulled out the phone and never even looked under the cardboard since I just used all the existing chargers I had scattered around.

Will find out Friday when I get home, am about 1500 miles away for training for the week.
Are they any good? I have been using the Beats/Monster headphones that came with the HTC Rezound lately, I had a couple sets from various replacements of that device from way back, but the last one left is kinda getting rough...

its ok for music, but not below average , they will be good to talk in calls rather than listening to music.. i feel they are same as nokia default headset (Nokia WH 108) not kind of IN EAR BUD type
Yeah, even though they look cheap they produce good sound.

I finally ran across this thread again after someone bumped it up and I remembered that I never looked for my headphones... Just grabbed the box and looked under the top insert, nothing but a sealed wall charger, and a cheap one at that, not even a USB cable?!?! Hmm...
Should all region's retail versions come with ear buds? I bought my 2/16 model direct from Motorola via MotoMaker...
EDIT: Guess not, from the official website specifications:
In the box
Moto G, Wall Charger, Guides
No mention of headphones, guess I'm not missing anything.
At least you got a wall charger. The European Version (well, at least the one sold here in Germany) includes neither a wall charger nor headphones...

Ye, the regular European one only has USB to micro USB.
Interestingly though, the company I bought it from included an international to au wall adapter, which doesn't really help without a wall charger.

My French retail from Amazon has wall charger and earphones. But I'm in the UK so need a adapter to use the charger.
