Help sought: Screwed up my S4 and seeking a fix - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

Note: Relevant device info will be provided below.
Dear techwizards,
I've been trying to root my phone for a while, I've done it before: both my S II and S III were international variants, and rooting those devices was very simple. But after getting an S IV from America and consensually downloading a samsung issued update -- I had yet to read up on the disadvantages of knox -- my rooting and android experience took a turn for the worse.
Long story short -- I know developers are a proud bunch who value their time -- I tried rooting my phone yesterday after almost smashing my phone on a coffee table. They say it's a well known side effect of Touchwiz, but I'll leave that to you.
I used a towelroot.com root -- a wonderful tool, if I may say so. After that, I visited the CM website and picked out the compatible CM11. I never got to flashing it though, as my problems arose while installing a recovery.
I had downloaded an app, a something recovery or another. They had an option to flash recoveries on there--it would download your recovery for you and do all the work, which seemed plausible as most video tutorials demonstrated. To my astonishment, doing so bricked my phone.
I tracked back, looked for the samsung stock rom, downloaded all 2.2 gb's of it and flashed it. It worked. My phone was functional but I suspect something within it stinks. My device, apparently for security reasons, wont let my wifi or 4g to establish a connection. It's making it impossible for me to fix this problem as I can't root my device or flash a custom rom.
About Device:
Pre problem I was running a:
SGH-I337UCUFNC1 baseband. Build Number ending with: NC1.
Android version: 4.2.2
Post problem:
Baseband: I337UCUFNC1
Build Number: JSS15J.I337UCUEMK2
Android version 4.3.
If I could find my original stock 4.2.2 NC1 version and get simple instructions on how to re-install it back to stock version, I'd be very grateful.
If you know how I could fix the internet issue on the MK2 one, and provide some simple instructions of how to root it, I'd be grateful too.
If you think neither would work, and have something else in mind, Im open to your suggestions.
Much Regards,
Y

You can only use safestrap for the recovery. See in the general forum index, all things at&t....
You can't flash cm, only touch wiz based roms

I never got to installing or attempting to install CM.
Things took a turn for the unexpected after I tried installing CMW recovery.
Please reread my post

I've read it. You can't install cwm. That's what had messed up your device. The only recovery you can use is safestrap

I see. Thanks for the info. Do you know what could be done to restore my device to stock? As of now I'm running a MK2 Android 4.3 on a NC1 4.2.2 device and the wifi/4g connection aren't working.

Since your bootloader is already locked, you might as well Odin to stock. Odin to NB1 then use stock recovery to flash the NC1 update from a zip file on a microSD.
Part of the problem is that the NC1 is not 4.2.2 like you listed, but 4.4.2. That's the update you applied that started the sordid tale. When you were on 4.2.2, with bootloader MD<something>, you could have flashed CM or whatever, because you would be able to have TWRP or CWM recovery. When Samsung pushed out a 4.3 update (MK2 I believe) all the unlocked bootloader fun was over, probably permanently for this phone.
When you flashed MK2 firmware (4.3) onto the phone, parts of it don't work with the NC1 baseband, causing the problems you've seen. If you Odin NB1, then do the quick zip update from stock recovery to get all the way to NC1, you'll be back to stock and everything should work.
Once that's done, you can go through this process:
1. Root with Towelroot.
2. Install SuperSU to manage root access. (You might have to reboot, it's a 50%/50% shot... sometimes it hangs trying to disable Knox... no worries just reboot)
3. Install SafeStrap... it will create the safestrap recovery. You might need to install SELinux Mode Changer app (from play store) and set to permissive, to get Safestrap installed.
4. Boot to the SafeStrap recovery. Install any touchwiz rom. Only touchwiz compatible roms will work. I liked GoldenEye.
When installing touchwiz ROMs, typically one flashes the ROM, then SuperSU, then the NC1 modules, then the ATT BuildProp/APN file. Sounds complex but goes quickly. Some roms have some of these things built in.
Good luck! I eventually decided I didn't like the ATT Samsung restrictions of the locked boot loader, and bought a T-Mobile M919 variant of the S4. Unlocked boot loader. Woo hoo. And works fine on ATT.

To Root and to Tinker--Rooting and Recovery

So, I'm new to the locked bootloader scene. The root & ROM threads, tutorials, and videos seem to root via a Terminal Emulator process, then install Safestrap. Those same sites and videos say that when you're flashing a ROM after selecting a new ROM Slot, you have to flash "whatever modules and packages are for your device", whatever that means. Since I can't find these packages anywhere, is it safe to assume that I can just root, install Safestrap, create a ROM Slot, and start flashing away as if nothing's up? Or do I need to worry about this boot patch and some "Loki Doki" thing I heard about. I'm sure these answers exist, and I've done my due diligence, but these threads have either been buried for good, or are such a common a knowledge subset that I can't find anything concrete. Even the videos I've seen talk about the "modules" you have to flash. I'm an experienced Androidist, tinkerer, and tweaker. The information I'm finding doesn't provide you with the big picture. It's all, "MJ2 read this, and follow these 9 steps", and "mk2 follow these 10 steps". But none of them tell you what to do in Safe strap recovery, and if you needs some Loki/module magic.
Help a brotha out? I'll return the favor 10-fold, I can promise you that much. I'll be quite active around here.
Thanks!

First off you never said what baseband you were on but assuming that your on MK2 android 4.3 then let's start.
Use this method to root your device
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2569827
Since your on mk2 you can ONLY use safe strap 3.71 do not attempt to install safe strap 3.65 AND SAFE STRAP WILL BE THE ONLY RECOVERY YOU CAN INSTALL!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448925
And note that 3.71 is still in beta as of right now there are still bugs and YOU CAN ONLY FLASH A COUPLE OF ROMS.
From the same thread cause I know your not going to go through the forums and read, download the attmk2module.zip that ted77usa posted
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448925
Root your device
Install safestrap after install, install recovery in safestrap apk.
There's only a few Roms you can flash
Darthstalker x in the att android development forum
Hyperdrive 12 in the Verizon android development forum download the one that says safestrap
A few have noted that some other Roms work but I haven't tested it out do some more reading.
After you download a rom
Reboot your device and go into safestrap recovery
Create a ROM slot ON ROM SLOT 1
DO NOT MESS WITH YOUR STOCK SLOT!
After creating a ROM slot go to install and install your rom.
After successfully installing a ROM reboot then go back into recovery and install the attmk2module.zip
Reboot and instead of going into recovery this time continue
It will take awhile to load its normal.
Now you should have a ROM.
Now go tinker with that.

You're perfect in every way. ? Bromance FTW
You even answer threads like me. This helped a TON! I owe ya one.
Edit: last question. The instructions say to install the ROM, reboot, then install the modules. I assume that the reboot instruction means that we should reboot, boot into the ROM for the first time, then boot back into recovery and install the modules?
Or should I flash the ROM, power down, then boot into recovery (ensuring that the ROM is never booted before the modules are installed)-- I suppose I could just use the reboot recovery option in the Safestrap TWRP.

By the way...since the ROM selection is limited, I assume heavy XPosed use is okay, and quite common?
Which ROM do you guys prefer?
I assume that sites and articles like this one: http://www.droidviews.com/best-custom-roms-for-att-samsung-galaxy-s4-sgh-i337/
aren't reliable sources--they probably don't take into account the the ATT S4 compatibility issues. This is showing CM11, Carbon, KangaBean, Infamous...am I correct in my assumption that those are for the lucky birdies that had MDL/MDB, and didn't need Safestrap?
Has someone put together a compatibility/guide megathread? I think I will if it hasn't been done.

Welcome aboard!!!! Firstable are u on MF3 firmware or MK2 frimware......? both are using SafeStrap (SS) as custom recovery as of right now. Like i said on previous post MF3 use SS-v3.65 so that u able to install only 4.2.2 TW custom rom or 4.2.2 Google Play Edition (GPE) rom. If u are on MK2 firmware u can only use SS-v3.71 and able to install some of 4.3 custom rom (SHOstock-v3.0-Safestrap-Ready) is one of them that worked......Hyperdrive-RL12 from verizon thread also seem pretty good but u need to add your APN manually if u are on ATT network. Both firmware MF3 and MK2 are use different kernel modules, so after flashing custom Rom you NEED to flash your current firmware kernel modules also, otherwise u won't be able to connect to WiFi,bluetooth, gps etc..... hope this make sense to you......i know is kinda confusing ......but the more u read is the more it would make sense.... Check this thread for list of compatible rom Official AT&T S4 Safestrap Discussion Q/A
One more thing. My S4 will be here tomorrow. Let's say I get lucky and find MDL/MDB on my device. Do I need to hurry and avoid a software update, or avoid a data connection? Or do the updates proceed only with user interaction? The rooting is the same for all 3 devices, but if I do get MDL/MDB or the next one, I'll have to update the baseband before flashing newer ROMs, right?

It makes sense, I'm mostly just unfamiliar, as opposed to being completely useless, but you guys have been amazing...you've already shot me up to about 80% on a distribution curve.
Why would anyone stick with MF3? MK2 is an update for MF3, right? Why don't those users update, then safestrap 3.71 it, so they can use 4.3 roms? It'd seem kinda funky to me to be stuck with a 4-2 ROM by choice, unless they're doing it solely for the GPE ROM.
These firmware kernel modules...I'll have the same modules for each ROM I flash right? Or are these modules a .zip that I'll find in each ROM thread, for each carrier.
By the way, APN settings don't scare me. Here, you might actually appreciate this work--done right after ATT's LTE network came online (I believe the Note was the first device that utilized it?...If it wasn't, it was definitely the first to tax the network.)::
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26877683
Edit: the Q&A thread for Safe strap was reasonable...but it still talks about kernel flashes, and blown QFusee (har?)
I guess I mainly need to come to grips with the kernel situation. The Q&A says that you can't use custom kernels if you've updated to OTA, but doesn't mention factory MF3 builds, and it isn't really very clear about the module/kernel module situation.
You said I need to flags my **current** firmware kernel modules: are those different if I get a device with MF3 than those for MK2? Or are these just modules that I create myself (based upon whatever's in my stock ROM slot maybe?) in recovery?

MDB>MDL>MF3>MJ6>Mj9>MK2.......the reason of the update is ATT trying to lock bootloader so we won't be able to install custom rom or do what ever we want to the phone.......but either way.....XDA member always found away to cracked it....so some people have to upgrade not by choice.....most of them by accident....like me ( cracked my screen ) or they install wrong recovery.....(bricked) so be careful when installing custom recovery.....like i said....we need to know what kinda firmware that u have so we can help u.....LOL now i got it why u dont know yet....since u dont have the phone yet.......... but is ok.....that's the right thing to do.....get to know your stuff first before u brick your phone.....:good: so basically u need to match your kernel modules with your firmware otherwise it won't be able to connect to Wifi, bluetooth, gps, etc it doesn't matter if u OTA to MF3 or MK2.....or it come with MF3 or MK2....

[Q] Rooting S4 (Build No. NC1)

I am new to flashing so sorry if I have asked some stupid questions.
I have SGH-I337 (ATT) and would like to root and then maybe install Cyanogenmod or any other custom ROM.
Device Details:
Baseband - NC1
Build No. - NC1
Android Version - 4.4.2
I tried to root NC1 directly using motochopper. Then I read and I am now trying to downgrade.
I have got ODIN 3.09 but it does not say support to I337. I have gone through Noob Helper
I have downloaded all zips from Downgrade
After reading the article of Modems; I got confused about my bootloader.
I also have gone through the thread but after that confusion, I did not proceed ahead.
Could anyone please help me?
How to identify boot-loader?
Which ODIN to use or do I need to use SAFETRAP (not sure if bootloader is MF3) ?

Dont worry about Odin saying the device is i9505 or so. The flash will work.
For samsung phones running full stock firmware, all the components have the same version. Since your build is NC1, your bootloader is also NC1.
You are in the right track. Follow the downgrade thread to partial downgrade to MK2. Then use saferoot to root. Then install safestrap v3.72. Then use the deadly venom kitkat magic tool to install any kitkat rom of your choice from this list (post 3).
You cannot install any AOSP based rom. So, no CM. Even google play edition roms dont work.
You can install AOSP themed roms (like BlackBox3.0)

Thank you for the response. I have downgraded to MK2 and have done the root.
I was wondering if you could tell me if it is possible to install Liquid Smooth ROM. I have seen the video and I have downloaded from here which says S4 unified. Also, there are some videos claiming CM on S4.
Could anyone please help on the same?

As already stated, no AOSP based roms will work (ROMs that are built by compiling AOSP code). Only TouchWiz based roms will work. If you need AOSP look and feel, you can install an AOSP themed rom.
CM/AOSP on ATT S4 is only possible if you have the MDB/MDL bootloader. Anything above that, it wont work.

Sorry for the repeated questions.
I tried to update through Safestrap with BlackBox. But I got stuck on the boot screen where it shows Samsung Logo. I might have done something wrong. I just clicked next on BlackBox 3.0. Could anyone please help me !

When I tried to reboot into recovery mood (Vol Up + Home + Power) it says:

I had rooted MK2 and the installed the custom ROM (Blackbox) and then was suppose to flash NB1.
So, if I just did a factory reset it would solve my error?
Thanks for the help!
Edit:
I tried doing the factory reset. It just wipes all the user data. And I am still stuck on the same screen with Samsung and the custom logo.

Help Needed - Downgrading 4.4.2 to 4.2.2, and Rooting after downgrade - AT&T S4

Hi all!
I am a noob in need of some help with downgrading my phone, back to 4.2.2 (Jellybean).
My current situation is as follows:
I initally got the S4 from AT&T with the stock 4.2.2 rom (with the Build # ending in MF3, and the Baseband version of i337). Soon after sometime I had rooted that version on my phone and everything was alright.
After a couple of months 4.4.2 was released and AT&T started pushing it out/releasing it for download. So I went ahead with the download without doing a proper backup of the then current rom (4.2.2) (a really dumb idea on my part! ) - so I don't have a snapshot of the 4.2.2 rom.
Anyways, after the update I current have the S4 with (Kitkat 4.4.2 - Build # NB1 and the baseband is still the same - i337). I know there are some threads out there somewhat outlining what needs to be done and so forth, with people tested it out as well. But I am having a hard time following the instructions, also I haven't found one that has a clear instruction set for downgrading 4.4.2 to 4.2.2.
The reason I need this soon is because my phone has started glitching big time now (seems like it may not be able to handle the switch) - it has started overheating with basic functionalities such as calling/text/charging, and having random 'black screens', and all this began happening only after the upgrade.
What I'm looking for (if possible):-
A non-rooted method of backing up application data from the phone before the downgrade
A way to downgrade 4.4.2 to 4.2.2 (I should be able to figure out how to root it once its back to jellybean)
A way to retain emoji's
Any help will be appreciated regarding this! Please try not to be too harsh, I'm trying hard to learn properly and not screw up with the process.
Thanks!
There is no way to downgrade to 4.2.2. Don't even waste your time.

The only way is sending it for service to see if they could downgraded for you, which I doubt it. You can downgrade to Mk2 which is possible and try to isolate your problems.

Thank you for your response jd! Can I ask why there isn't a way so far? Is it because of the kernel lock or something?

It is because of the locked bootloader. You can not downgrade the firmware, except from nb1/nc1 to mk2

1. Usually you need first to flash full NB1 found on post # 2.
2. Downgrade to mk2 post#1 before reboot pull battery and back on. Put in recovery mode by pressing Vol up+ Home+ power at same time. Then factory reset and reboot to system.
Root using safe root
Install safe strap then install recovery within safestrap.
Flash Bypasslkm in safestrap.
Reboot fix wifi in universal init.d : turn on, tap on wififix then hit play.
Finish setup.
Once you are here you can choose any TW base rom.

That's such a goofy way to fix wifi. I've never actually had to do that (mostly because it never actually worked for me). Flash this instead after you flash your TW based rom: NC1 wifi modules. Much more noob friendly, in my opinion! Domination and PurifieD both let you keep Androids emoji's instead of Samsung's.
A rough idea of how to flash a custom rom (PurifieD, in this example) would be:
Downgrade to MK2 as detailed above
Install and boot into Safestrap 3.72, flash PurifieD (wipe not necessary)
If you wish to keep Knox happy with 0x0, do not let PurifieD modify the kernel during the Aroma installer when it asks
Flash an i337 build.prop in order to get 4G LTE working again (you have service without this, but this lets you access LTE again) (you can find this here!)
Flash the WiFi module in order to get wifi working again (WiFi will NOT work unless you flash this) (you can find this here!)
(Optional, I had to do this as I had issues with keeping root on PurifieD, though you might not!) Flash SuperSU again (you can find this here!

That's after you have flash NC1 rom, but this is when you downgrade to mk2 from there he could flash any TW rom. Actually it would be his choice. Maybe he can flash the mk2 modules before he flash other rom.

[Q] Bootloader unlock Galaxy s4 sgh-i337 4.4.2 kitkat

I rooted my galaxy s4 sgh-i337 runing android 4.4.2 today using towel root. It is an apk you install and will root any phone with 4.4.2 or lower. Well I tried flashing clockworkmod but when it restarts a message from at&t comes up saying that unauthorize software is trying to install on phone. So I think that means the bootloader is locked. How do I unlock it so I can flash CWM and perform a nandroid backup. Then I want to install custom roms. I know alot of people were looking for 4.4.2 root for s4 so might want to post another thread about towel root. towelroot .com

You CANNOT install CWM or TWRP. You will need to use SafeStrap recovery. Read up about it, as I have the older Loki bypass and don't need/use towelroot or safestrap.
With safestrap you are limited to flashing Touchwiz based roms. You can flash modems. You CANNOT flash kernels.

All the post below are correct except being able to go back to firmware with an unlocked boot loader.. Install safestrap 3.72 and install recovery. You will get a Twrp recovery .. dont try flashing custom kernels ..It might flash but none of the setting such as overclock etc. will work .nor will you be on that kernel version afterwrds .. I guess the simple answer is no for cwm and aosp roms .. You will be only able too flash custom stock roms
Wifi issues with towelrooted gs4
First off this may not be the right place for this (first time poster), and if so, either please help me in finding the right forum or forgive my ignorance.
I rooted my galaxy s4 today, and I have found that when I am trying to use wifi I am unable to connect to some pages. Using chrome I am unable to load google.com, or google anything directly from the search bar. And the app imgur also doesn't load whilst on wifi, but if I switch to my cell network they load just fine. If I had unlimited data of course this would not be an issue, but that is not the case and therefore I come to this forum and hope that someone can help me out!
My s4 is an at&t i337. I would amazingly, greatly appreciate any help!
Much thanks in advance!
lost recovery with unlocked bootloader
Hello,
longtime flasher here, not as familiar with gs4.
My girl has a sgh-i337 that has been bootloader unlocked since day one. Been on TWRP and slim rom the whole time too.
I was wiping Cache, Dalvik Cache, and System prior to doing a rom update and TWRP glitched out while updating partition after the final wipe operation. Screen went black. Boots to download mode only. Will not boot rom (as system was wiped) but shows the samsung custom unlocked logo. When in download (odin) mode, I see product name: sgh-1337, Current Binary: Samsung Official, System Status: Custom CSB_OEM_LSB: 0x30 Write Protection: enable
universal android toolkit will not show device connected so Installation of custom recovery through toolkit fails. ADB will not show device connected. ODIN will show device connected, though.
To recover with odin, can I flash the I337UCUAMDL from sammobile and retain unlocked bootloader?
Thanks for any and all help.
What is the bootloader version you need to unlock? I have 4.2.2 Red ATT S4, Baseband Version : I337UCUAMF3 / BUILD: JDQ39 , if i was able to unlock how would i go about doing so? I was hoping i could do something with Loki if not? How does Loki work exactly as well?
Congrats, you just voided your warranty. It will be 0x1 instead of 0x0.

Though I'm not sure if you know about custom recoveries. I'm having issues with installing any of them and having it work. I am currently trying Safestrap and for some reason it won't install the recovery. It'll go through the process, but the state of the recovery won't change or anything.
I ultimately want to install CM11, but I'm really struggling to find a way that works!

[Q] Root gained but can't install recovery

Please read this port and resolve my issue as I need some expert opinion !!!
I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 with no logo and carrier boot animation
I wanted to root my phone and for that I needed to know what model I am using, so by checking in the about device options it says the following (Screen Shot Attached):
Model number: GT-I9505
Android version: 4.3
Baseband verson: I9505ZHUEMJ6
Kenel version: 3.4.0-1921628 [email protected] #1 Sat Nov 16 14:33:13 KST 2013
Build number:JSS15J.I9505ZHUEMJ6
CPU-Z says its GT-i9505 (Screen Shot attached)
I tried rooting it by using Odin and got failed and I realized in the Download Mode that my Model name is SGH-i337
Some how I managed to get it rooted using this method http://www.onlineunlocks.com/blog/root-knox-disable/ and installed SU in my phone but my phone's recovery is corrupt as I tried to flash CWM recovery using Rom Manager.
I have installed SafeStrap recovery but have not tried any other ROM yet.
Terminal Emulator says my bootloader version : I337UCUFNB1 (Screen Shot Attached)
I search a lot to get back to the same ROM but I couldn't find any.
there are so many variants of Galaxy S4 and I have no clue which ROM is suitable for my Model.
There are few Questions which for which I need the answers if you guys could Help:
How can I get back to the Stock version I mean which Package to flash through Odin? any links?

Well this looks confusing. Looks to me like either you actually have a
I337 ATT branded phone due to the bootloader and someone flashed a i9505 ROM and modem. The weird part is the modem (baseband) as it states it is from a i9505.
Or you have a i9505 that someone SOMEHOW flashed the i337 bootloader.
My best guess is that you have a i337 and it is actually running the i337 nb1 firmware. And someone mistakenly flashed a i9505 modem (which may actually flash, but data or wifi probably wouldn't work). I would suggest checking out which Roms you can flash with safestrap recovery then also flash one of the ATT I337 modems in my thread via safestrap recovery.
If above works for you I would then suggest looking for the NB1 or NC1 unbrick method and flash with Odin. You might as well update the bootloader to NC1 then flash safestrap if you want to flash custom Roms. Check out the safestrap threads and info of Roms in their OP for more details on how to flash. I do not use safestrap recovery, so find info from others that do.
Here is a NB1 thread to check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2674223
I really appreciate your response. I will try few Roms as I get time and files downloaded. I am from Pakistan and at&t doesn't work here. My phone's Wi-Fi is all okay. However I can't use wifi tethering. And just as you said, I don't wanna use this safestrap recovery also. I really want that cwm recovery as it's less hectic. And just in case if my model is actually i337 so any NB1 firmware will work on it? I have lots of confusion because I am not sure what will happen if I flash a particular Rom. Whenever I try to get into recovery using Volume up+home+power key. Odin mode turn on and then I have to flash i337 .tar file to get it on. Safestrap has given me some support as I can make a backup at least. But still lot's of confusions. Can anyone give me more suggestions or safe mathods to apply?
you can't use clockwork recovery on your build and no aosp roms--sorry
Okay. Can I flash stock Roms using Odin? And which one please let me know?
You can't flash roms with Odin. Read up in General in All Things MK2 and ATT thread and Hashcodes SafeStrap thread in Development.
Thank you, let me read that thead. But how can I un-root my device and get back to stock ? Now I am nervous
Rock posted this just above:

The link you posted and asked if you could use-----look at its date--early/mid 2013. Your build is way past that. I know it is a lot of research. But, only way to keep your phone usable. I don't even need SafeStrap, but have read enough about it to be fairly comfortable. Did it to try and help folks.
A quick FYI. You need SafeStrap because any build post MDL has no way of bypassing Sammy's security check of kernel during reboot. MDL and below can use Loki-Doki an exploit that bypasses the check. So you can't flash aosp and custom kernels/recoveries. There are a couple exceptions on aosp. But, nothing to get into until you get more experience.
It just takes some time, especially with SafeStrap. You need correct version and know where to flash roms to. The ATT/MK2 thread has a lot of info on how to root and get SafeStrap on your phone. Esp post 5.
But, you can get back to stock NB1 from Rock's link and the tar posted there.
