Hi guys,
I live in an area with very weak 4g and 3g service. So I picked up a verizon network extender. It works, but I notice the phone after a while starts getting hot and it looks like the data is jumping around, so to speak, The phone is hot and very slow so I know its confused trying to swap from the extender to maybe what I think is very weak 4g service.
Since I'm on kitkat, i cant disable LTE when I'm home. Any other things you can think of to fix this issue? It's driving me crazy!

Yeah the extender shouldn't be able to do that to the phone. You might have to send your phone in

The extenders aren't real good thru walls or floors and are only good for about 30 feet from your phone. If you have a lousy home internet connection...you could have issues also

Are both Phones running the same rom, same modems etc?
If yes, then its probably a network issue from TMO themselves, and you should call them to ask them if anything is going on, and if nothing is, they'll either:
1) give you instructions on how to get better signal
2) give you a little modem thing for better signal that you connect on your PC.
i have the little modem thing, its like a little cell tower i was part of the BETA program.
interesting seeing this thread because bout an hour ago I lost my data connection and camt get it back. not this first time this has happened. l
Then for sure its a TMO problem, not yours.
Call them up, ask them whats going on, and get a answer.
It's perfect here in Texas for me.
I had the same problem too, but i went to mobile network via settings and switch network mode to gsm instead of gsm/wdmca or something like that. worked for me.
looks like they fixed it now.....now get all bars
At around 9-10 est I had the same problem. I had full bars but the data was slowed. Its better now though. Maybe some work being done?

Here the past few days, my data, which is usually around or about 2-3mb down and .6mb up has been at 5.8-6mb down and 1.5-3mb up
I have to set my network settings to wdcma only to avoid constantly switching to edge. I only switch to auto mode when im traveling.

Here in Puerto Rico it has been hell on all of my family phones.Starting with call not wanting to go out, many times i get a message saying all circuits are busy. And then something incredibly weird,i call some one and all you hear is like a bunch of sound like they are from an old PC dial up modem but not quite in that patter and fast and you hear like some one is breathing at the same time.
Like some estrange sounds use in movies to simulate Alien voices or some sh** like that,i tough it was my phone,i am running Toxic Fire, but my wise have also heard it and his Vibrant isn't rooted and doesn't have any custom rom,and also my friend which is on AT&T hear it when i call it a few days ago.
And yes Data rates had been to low at times.
Im in florida and had some bad reception issues from like 5pmest Friday till 12pmest Saturday. Don't know if its related or not.

Its spotty. 3g is fast where I live in Framingham, but I noticed in other areas in Framingham 3g is as slow as EDGE, and some places in Newton and Brookline only have EDGE.....I mean its 4G era and we should have almost 100% 3G coverage by now. I dont see the point moving on to 4G, I would be MUCH more happy with full 3G in MA
It happened to me a few times this week (DC Area) and I thought there was something wrong with my phone. After rebooting my phone for a few times, and playing with network mode, and lastly checking my wife's BB, I realized it must have been T-mobile network.
I've had this problem for a while and finally after numerous calls to T-Mo i figured it out.
I live inbetween a crappy Edge tower apparently in the boonie area about a mile away, and also a 3g tower about the same distance in the other direction in civilization.
It constantly switches on me when i'm at home to whatever it feels like, usually edge... I think just to get under my skin on purpose.
When i finally realized that I went to settings - wireless and network - Mobile networks - Network mode - then put it on WCDMA only. Boom 3g all day.
If you happen to go into an area and you lose service, do the same thing, but instead of selecting WCDMA only, put it on auto and you will be able to use edge service as well again.
I live in the (North Jersey) area and I notice that my phone is constantly losing 3G Data (The 3G Network Icon Disappears). It is really annoying and I never really noticed it when I had my Galaxy S3. Does anyone else have the same issue? I'm trying to determine if the problem is specific to my phone or the sprint network. Or is it a common defect with the S4. The constant dropping of the Data network makes me really dislike this phone at times.
Call Sprint first, they maybe doing network upgrades in your area
Then try disabling lte

thats what you get for living in jersey........as an ex sprint employee you guys on the east coast are nothing but a big ball of problems. i would say that 95% of the calls i took at sprint were from the east coast......

my point exactly lmao.....thats not what i meant haha but i guess it does kinda read that way lmao. what i was trying to convey is that the east coast has alot of issue with sprint and vice versa.for some reason sprint just does not work well in that area (im assuming its a population thing) but when i was at sprint it seemed like every day towers in NJ and NY were contsantly going down. sprint just has bad juju in that area i guess. dosent help with your issue at all just something i noticed in my time there.
I'm in North Jersey myself and go to NYC often. I always joke that only sprint can manage to lose data 3G or 4G in the middle of Manhattan. And yes, poor 3G sevice in Jersey as well. But it's not your phone, my old S3 did the same thing. Sprint blows, its the price you pay for cheaper service. Im currently in Philadelphia, and it is actually far worse here.
I have the same issue in Brooklyn and Queens NY. It's also bad when I come out of the subway and I can't get a data connection in some areas for 5 minutes. Plus the jumping between 3 and 4g is annoying as hell. I wish there was a toggle to turn 4g off like there was on my s2.

There is, it's just not a toggle. Settings -> connections -> more networks -> mobile networks -> network mode: change to CDMA
And yes, your issue with taking a while to get data service is very familiar to me unfortunately. It's not the phone because usually it's instant. But when I lose data, it's at the worst possible time, like when I really need to get directions in the car. What sometimes works is toggling airplane mode.
I've have a note 3 and it has always had a low signal. I've heard of people talking about using extenders but have never seen one or talked to anyone that had one. My question is what is the situation where this is called for and how does it hook up. My note seldom gets at 4g signal in the house most of the time it's a low 3g signal with some dropped calls. My s4 basically does the same but my old moto RAZR mass and all lucid both get a descent 4g signal. Would a extender solve this problem? Of so how do I go about getting one. Thanks. Jesse

I have the same problem as what you have and the tiered 2 tech support sent me a network extender router for test then it was epic failure for my area as it wasn't working very well in my area.
It depends on your area but it is not free and I returned the network extender router back to the Verizon.
No charge under 14 days.
Good luck ?
That's what u heard was you had to buy the things and if they worked it was minimal at best. I think I keep as I am for now because it is usable not quite the reception ithought I would get for a 700 dollar phone

The network extender is a nano cell site. You plug into your home network and that's how you get signal. I don't know about the new ones, but the older ones had to be connected by a network cable to your router. If you have lousy home internet service....the extender will only be "good" for phone calls, not data.

The reception in our home is poor, for all devices. We had the original Network Extender, and now the 3G Network Extender, and for us, it works quite well.
It has an ethernet connection to our Router, and generates a cell signal. Calls then go through the internet connection. As pointed out above, it's for calls only. It will have no impact on your 4G signal. But if you're at home, and have an internet connection, then presumably you'd have WiFi and wouldn't need your cell signal for data.
Without the extender we had very frequent missed or dropped calls. It made us reluctant to even use the phones at home. With it, there is rarely a dropped or missed call. Works for us.
As for cost, I was able to give me a significant discount (50% or so) when I indicated that I wouldn't be able to continue with Verizon because their signal is so poor in our home. Could possibly get it for free if pushed; some have.
Just wondering if could be faulty unit or Sprint signal problems but i've been getting dropping signals randomly inside of my house, and also friend telling me that they called me but i never them calls, if more ppl like me?

I'm on Sprint JC and I've gotten slightly lower speeds in my living room than my Note 3 ,but still very solid 4G , But my city has strong Sprint LTE..
I've had no interruptions no sputters.

Do you think should I request an RMA for my phone? Or maybe is Sprint side

Just helped my girlfriend's mom with her new phone today (she's not had a smartphone before). I was very pleasantly surprised and happy for her that her phone registered 10-12 dBm better signal than my S6 (S6 and MXP both on Sprint right next to each other on the countertop).
Edit: I don't know that it would make a difference, but maybe just verify as an easy check, see if it is set to LTE. Her phone was initially set to Global, for some reason (it worked either way, but I didn't pay attention to signal before switching it to LTE).
I think Global is for aloud the phone to be selecting either LTE, 3G or 1x based on the signal, so if we switch to LTE only as soon I move to LTE ill be losing data

The tower in my area is notoriously crappy. many times even text messages will delay until we travel to another cell. My ex as an example received a Text message two days after I had sent it. no rhyme or reason, just crap service across all devices.
As far as 3g goes, if others have 4g my only suggestion is to reboot the phone. worked for my s3 running cyanogenmod 12.
Call them and ask them to investigate the tower. Have your coworkers call as well. You would need to know your signal strength for any real troubleshooting. Its possible that another vendor put up a tower or increased bands (channels) on existing tower. Also, does your employer have an extender/repeater. Maybe it is having issues?

I'm going to give it a couple more days just in case they're working in the area and no my company does not have an extender Network out here I wish they did. Thanks
The BPA1 update really screwed with my reception. Prior to the update, I would be 2-3 bars 4G service with no drops inside my fire hall. After the update, I bounce between 1x & 3G with only 1 bar each depending on where I am in the building and it chews through battery the whole time. I updated one night at the hall and went from 2 bars 4G and streaming video with no drop outs to 1x and barely able to load Google.com all while sitting in one spot.
The phone also lags considerably while switching between networks and/or wifi.

I agree the BPA1 update made my reception really bad too. I've gotten so many dropped calls at my house since then. I think I'm dropping Verizon as soon as my contracts up....
You can try 4G switcher app and toggle off LTE/CDMA auto PRL and then back to it to refresh your data?
Flashed back to BOG5 . Signal strength seems fine now. Maybe Verizon puts out ****ty updates on purpose just so people get tired of the poor performance and go buy a new phone . I hope not, makes me wonder

Now that I have unlocked the bootloader, I flashed back to the BOK3 modem and have much better signal strength and faster downloads as a result. Call audio is suffering a bit though with a nasty echo at times...
