[Q] Note 3 Sim into a Razr Maxx? - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm trying to "fix" my reception problem. Love everything about my Note 3 except its inability to connect to a signal in a fringe area, The Note 3 has been replaced once already by Verizon for the reception problem. My previous phone was a Razr Maxx. Verizon is my carrier. The reception issue only affects me in an area that I hunt.(I generally hunt alone and communication is a safety issue) I did a side by side comparison with my Note 3 and a Verizon 4g I pad. Where I had absolutely no signal on the Note 3 I had some 4g on the Ipad and 3g was good. I had used the Razr Maxx in the exact same spot with no problem either voice or text. (An internet search seems to indicate that the Motorola radios have been some of the best performing) I still have the Razr Maxx. Can I charge up the Razr Maxx, insert the Sim card from the Note 3 and use it when I am hunting? If that is possible can I get a duplicate Sim card to keep in the Razr Maxx as long as I don't have both phones turned on at the same time? Will Verizon duplicate the Sim card for me or do I have to buy the duplicating equipment I see on line. Thanks.

I have a razr maxx hd as backup and the same problem with my note 3 you do. I will be very curious to see the answer from somebody who has done it. VZW told me not to....they want me to call them to deactivate the n3 and activate the rmhd but this could be an easier, quicker solution...but only if it works uneventfully.

You cant have duplicate sims. Just take the sim out of the note 3 and put in razr for whatever period of time you want. I switch phones frequently all that is needed on 4G phones is a sim card swap. No calls to VZW

I also have the razr maxx I swap out the sim card ever day no problem what so ever.

Moving SIM card from phone to phone

I currently have a Note 2, unlocked bootloader, alliance rom.
if I were to buy an S5, can I just move the Note's SIM card to the S5 and it would work?
Or does one of the talking heads at the Verizon store have to "activate" the S5?
I'd love to have 2-3 phones where I move the SIM card between them depending on how I feel each day.

Yes, you can swap the Sim card to different devices. I'm not sure if it'll work without going to the my Verizon and changing the device there as well though. I've used the same Sim card in my note 2, blackberry, s4, s5, maybe even all the way back to my thunderbolt, but I can't remember exactly.

I've used my current LTE Sim from Razr MAXX to Razr HD to Galaxy S5.. I have heard that the newer LTE Sims have some upgrades. How much truth there is to that, I don't know.

This is for Verizon!
I have mostly new phones and a new sim card. First and foremost all phones have to be activated with Verizon then you can change sims at will. I have a Galaxy S5, Moto Maxx, LG2 and IPhone 5. The same sim works in all phones. Yes I have to use a sim adaptor with the Galaxy S5. Shortly after changing the sim card the picture of the phone I'm using shows up on the My Verizon site.
I used to be with AT&T and I don't think each phone has to be activated by AT&T. I think it goes by the sim card. As I remember I could use any active sim card In any AT&T phone. If it was not a AT&T phone but worked on the same network you may have to configure the APN setting.
Can confirm. Got the VZW S5 through Amazon, which contained a new sim. When I got it, I turned off my old phone, popped out the microSD and sim, popped out the S5's sim and replaced it and installed the microSD and booted up.
First setup said the sim was active to my number, obviously, and I checked Verizon's site within minutes and it knew i had the new phone on that line.
Flawless victory.

I find it useful.
First Initialization of my S5
I was in the middle of initializing my S5 the day I received it. I had about 3 bars of signal strength. Then the signal strength went to zero and the phone would not complete initialization. I finally decided that the SIM card, for some reason, had fried during the process.
I removed the SIM card from my Droid Razor Maxx HD and plugged it into the S5. Signal strength was then back and the phone popped up a window stating that the SIM card was already activated. HOWEVER, I could still not make a call or reach the internet.
I called Verizon tech support and explained what I had done. He had me remove the SIM card and read off the lengthy number printed on the card. After he updated the system to associate this SIM card to the new phone everything was fine. It would be nice if their system software was smart enough to automate this process but apparently it isn't.
Also, I concur with the post that there is no guarantee you can swap SIM cards between phone. The first SIM enabled phone I owned definitely had a larger card. I would not have been able to move the card from that phone to the S5.

Moto Maxx on Verizon

Has anybody tried a Verizon SIM in a Moto Maxx to see if it works?
Moto Maxx DOES NOT work on Verizon
I purchased a Moto Maxx on ebay from a seller who had bought it from someone in Puerto Rico. I popped in my SIM card from my Droid Maxx and tried to activate it on Verizon's website. No luck. When I entered the IMEI it said that the device ID wasn't registered. So I called Verizon customer service and tried to activate it over the phone. Again, no luck, the guy on the phone told me that it was showing him that the IMEI wasn't registered. I had a feeling this was going to happen, although I thought Verizon would be actively blocking the IDs of Moto Maxxes, it turns out that they just aren't registered with Verizon, so Verizon can't activate them on their network. The guy I was talking to from Verizon customer service said that I could try taking the phone into a store and the people there could call Verizon tech support and try to get it activated. If you've ever been to a Verizon store you probably know why I didn't bother doing this. Even though they may be able to register the IMEI on Verizon's network, I don't think that the device would work properly since it is a GSM device and Verizon's network is CDMA. I know that VoLTE just came out so it's theoretically possible that you could use Moto Maxx on Verizon's network and all your calls could go through LTE. However, there are a lot of problems with VoLTE, like totally losing a call if you lose LTE service, etc.
My contract with Verizon just ended so I just switched to T-Mobile, which I've been waiting for my contract to end to be able to do, and the phone and service have been working great.
I'd highly recommend if you are in a good service area for T-Mobile (a major metropolitan area) to switch to T-mobile if you want to have a Droid Turbo/Moto Maxx device and be able to root it. T-mobile still offers early termination fee reimbursement for switching and right now they have a deal going for a 2 line unlimited family plan for $100/month and each additional line is $40/month.
Just curious, why were you trying to register the imei online? Popping in the sim should have been the only thing needed. Obviously that didn't work though.

Because popping in the SIM card didn't automatically begin an activation process on the phone, so I figured it was probably because the Moto Maxx isn't set up to automatically activate on Verizon. I just tried the next thing I could think of, which was trying to activate the phone on the Verizon website.

AT&T LTE Question

Quick question, I just got my moto x pure today and swapped my AT&T sim card from my note 5. I noticed when I make calls I use the HSPA network and not LTE. Any thoughts? I figured I would ask here first prior to dealing with AT&T directly.
Did it operate the same way in your Note 5? I use T-Mobile and it has always operated like that for me on all my devices and it will go back to LTE when the call is complete.
I believe that's to be expected. That's how both my S6 and OnePlus One were/are. (On AT&T)
My M8 does that as well. I don't know that AT&T has enabled VoLTE yet.
Sent from my HTC One_M8 using XDA Free mobile app
Moto X Pure does not support volte on ATT yet.
That makes complete sense, I'll have to swap my sim back to the note5 and see if it supports volte. Bummer though, its useful in some situations when traveling.

Every phone I've had that didn't use "Stock" At&t signal bars, due to running a custom ROM, switched to HSPA.
This is completely normal behavior.
I agree with EVERYONE here. This has been the same since AT&T deployed LTE. No calls take place over LTE. The calls rely on the HSPA network. Once the call is over, LTE displays very quickly. Nothing to worry about OP.
Anyone can confirm if Band 12 works with a tmobile Sim?

LTE on AT&T

Anyone having an issue getting LTE on AT&T?
Just curious - I remember having weird issues with devices that aren't sold by AT&T are limited to H signals only. Was hoping I didn't have to get on a live chat with them again to switch to an approved IMEI for LTE.
Thanks!! Looking forward to my 6P
No issues on AT&T. In fact my DB is about -5 better than with my OPO which had pretty darn good signal.
No problems where I am, picking up band 17 and band 2 just like I was on my s6 active.

no problems here. i feel like i get even better LTE coverage than i did with my old Nexus 5 and Micro SIM card - which was already stellar. maybe try a fresh new Nano SIM Card and make sure they have your new N6P IMEI on your account in their system associated with the fresh Nano SIM Card.
Phew! Glad to hear it all Thanks!
I've had no issues.. I actually went from my At&t HTC One M9 to a Moto X Pure Edition, then a OnePlus2 and now the N6P..... I have great reception and no issues with anything.
No issues here whatsoever either, just used a sim cutter I had earlier to cut down the sim from my note 4. Popped it in and good to go.
No problems going from an AT&T Samsung GS4 to a 2014 Moto X Pure Edition to the Nexus 6P. But, my mom got a 5X as her first smart phone and I had to chat with AT&T to have her line provisioned for LTE. They just needed the IMEI of the 5X and in just a few minutes, she had LTE.

My experience with Verizon LTE/Signal issues

The verizon signal on my ph-1 was not the best. I would often have to manually choose LTE only to have the phone get LTE, choosing LTE cdma/evdo would keep the phone on 1x/3g. I attributed this to possible software and hardware issues with the phone itself as I saw many other Verizon users with similar complaints. I recently purchased an iPhone and, to my surprise, the phone would not get LTE with the same sim. The sim I'm using originally came in a pixel but has since worked in an a g6, s8, and note 8 with no issue. I called Verizon and he said he had to configure my sim to the iPhone x, afterwards I got perfect LTE signal. I then put the sim back in my ph-1 and I also get perfect signal. Just thought I would share, maybe this will help someone....
