hi
root is not necessary only if you need it , for flashing you need custom recovery (twrp) and rom
from the thread
Installation instructions
I only support the latest TWRP recovery, AT&T users must loki after flashing
-Full wipe
-Flash ROM
-Reboot

You should root because only then you would be able to back up EFS, and EFS backup is very recommended before you Flash anything custom.

What is the easiest way to get a custom recovery on my device which is a i9505 i have rooted using cf auto root?
Sorry for the noobish questions i have always had Nexus devices so Odin etc is new to me
Use recovery tools, available from the play store. After installing CWM, it's easy to change to any other recovery you want. Hope this helped!

Just flash. All custom ROMs have root.
Btw, you need a custom recovery to flash a ROM (like TWRP, CWM)

Not necessarily. You can flash a custom recovery through Odin and not root it at all and then just install a already rooted ROM.

CWM is always reliable. Some prefer TWRP. I'm using Philz Touch. It depends on your preferences. CWM is the most stable.
Hi all
Is there root for D80220a-VDF-XX ?
After upgrading I lost twrp and root, any help would be appreciated.
No u have to go back to 4.2.2 then root and install custom recovery.

Root without back to 4.2.2
Hi,
Yesterday, autoprime published it's last IORoot25
With this, you can root D82020A, but you can't write TWRP or CWN Recovery, because the loki patch is not working today for D802+D80220a Rom
I rooted my rom this morning without back to 4.2.2
I'am waiting for the last loki patch for flashing custom recovery.
yeah me too i have d80220a rom 4.4.2 kk rooted but i cant install TWRP or CWM and i was wondering about the problem so now i know from you gus its all about the loki flash thanks god i was looking for an answer; so any idea about latest release of the loki flash that can help us?
only possible fix is via linux... fixing the partitions. too complex.

Hello, I've done some searching on xda and on the net. Does anyone have a a flashable zip of the 5.0.1 stock rooted nvidia rom?? Or even the stock 4.4.4 rom?? I would like to go back to stock but I'm not really in the mood to mess around with fastboot and adb right now.
I saw the tutorial on extracting the factory images from nvidia's site but I'm not a computer at the moment.
Thanks all. Much appreciated.

Flash this in CWM or TWRP. You will lose root, and any custom recovery that your using.

Hello, thanks for the links. I found the main thread for them. According to the OP, flashing recovery.img through fastboot is the way to go. Thanks for the help.

If you are on KitKat, root with towelroot and install flashify, and flash the recovery.img with that.

Hello,
Unfortunately, I had messed up and had to flash to cm12 unofficial just to get the device working. Towel root was not needed at the time.
I was able to use the tutorial and links provided by @MidgetMob to return to stock 5.0.1
I did use flashify afterwards to flash twrp 2.8.6.0 which has been working fairly well.
Thanks.

Is it any different on the latest official lollipop update?

Flash a recovery then flash a ROM. I recommend reading the tutorials in the General section, but there's nothing special involved in installing a custom ROM.
Whats the knox bootloader?

At first root your phone then Flash TWRP RECOVERY, download a custom rom for your model ,put the rom on external SD CARD and flash it in Twrp .
DO SOME SEARCHING AT FIRST
Flashing TWRP maybe won't work without root (just replied to post with issue) i had this issue also
