[Q] accelerometer - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I want to ask something. I have a problem with my accelerometer. So in the gpsstatus, it always shows g ~ 0.49 (https://www.dropbox.com/s/ylqclmxp71s1085/Screenshot_2014-08-25-23-49-06.png?dl=0)
I am not sure since when it happened. Then I download the system monitor, and only the Z accelerometer that gives wrong value (I guess it shouldbe close to 9.8??). Also from *#0*# looks like the Z value is wrong.
What is the number in your devices?
Is there anyway to reset/calibrate this number, specially without rooting?
Thanks!

Anyone here know how to fix this problem?

there could be only 2 possible causes for this: software or hardware.
For software issue you could reset the phone to factory or even wipe it clean and reload stock firmware to see if that helps.
If it's a hardware then the only thing I could think off is to make sure all the connectors are clean and make good contact, but I don't remember if sensors are on separate module like vibration or cam modules or are they build onto motherboard. If they are on separate board then check connectors and look for replacement, if they're on MB, then no connectors to worry, but fixing it gets more complex.
I can't remember ever seeing calibration for accelerometers, sorry.
What issues do you have, outside of showing wrong on gps status? Is it worth the trouble of fixing it? Samsung repair service is probably best bet, if that's an option.
ps
my gps status shows 0 unless moved, so there is something wonky there

Defective Unit? Pls advise

Hi Guys!
My TyTn is acting strangely. In use, the display is first pixelating, getting lines (noise pixels as well), and then fading to completely white. When so it doesn't responde to anything anymore. So a soft reset is needed.....
Also the ringtone when called, is 'out of tune', like a old record player when you push your finger on the record.. LOL
Before I send it back to have it fixed by HTC, do you guys have any idea whats wrong, and maybe even a tip to help me fix this myself?
Tried numerous soft resets, hard reset, and a reinstall of the original WM6 rom (in Dutch).
Did not install any new programs lately, or did change anything on the unit...
Don't want to miss my TyTn... so hate to send it away... as many of you I am hooked badly to my beloved digital companion
Greetzz Antal
It acts like hardware incompatible.
How about flashing with WM6 English version.
I don't think it is software problem.
I agree, not likely to be software. It did not get dropped or take a knock did it?
The two issues of pixelation/white screen may, if you are lucky, just be a connector thats loose. The sound I think is unrelated but again sounds like a poor connection at the white rear speaker connector block - not uncommon.
Both of the above could be caused by a sharp knock. There have also been cases of poor battery connections causing problems.
If you have a warranty use it. If not you can follow the dismantling guides or service manual to dismantle - check connections and re-assemble. Be prepared though, that sending it in might still be required!!
Mike
Will send it in
Hi Guys, Thanks fr your replies.
I will take the unit back to the store today.
I am not aware that I bumped it, or neither it has dropped. May be a connection that was allready quite loose to begin with. Lets see what HTC and the store will tell me
Strange thing is, that without my sim in it, and not using it, it stays normal... Have put it aside, and used a very old phone instead, and it is still normal..

Mmmm... that's important information and changes things a bit. Could be a sim card contact or something about the sim. Anyway it tends to suggest that other thoughts about hardware issues may not be correct!
Hope you find the answer at the store.

Strange trackball/keypad issue

Hi there!
I bought a damaged G1 from ebay to hack on.
There is some strange behaviour, that seems to be related to the trackball.
Everytime i scroll some pages for a while, the trackball is going really mad.
It toggles between applications, e.g. starts phone app or contacts and enters weird numbers.
If i leave it completely untouched the system behaves normal.
Just to give it a try, i disassembled the device and removed the trackball mechanic. Result: Everything behaves normal.
Due to these problems, i started a little research on the trackball parts.
So here's what i found (see attachment).
I will do some further investgation and check out if i'm able to fix this issue.
My suspicion is, that one of the magnetic sensors got damaged and toggles between high and low all the time, even without the trackball beeing moved.
Did anyone realized such a behaviour on a G1?
Any comments are welcome!!
Regards,
scholbert
Note that the trackball on HTC DREAM is identical to the trackball used in RIM cripplephones, so you can find a replacement easily... you can probably get a broken RIMjunk for $5 with good trackball hardware, or you can try at something like blackberrytrackball.com.
Hey lbcoder,
i knew that the touchball is identical to those used in the blackberries.
Thanks anyway to add this info and for pointing me at the web link!
Got a spare part with broken flat cable from another G1 device.
I'll have to do some further testing and then start the soldering job
BTW the trackball itself is not the damaged part. It's one of the magnetic sensor parts, i suppose.
Would be interesting if anyone else ever was affected by some irritating trackball issues?
Regards,
scholbert
It *is* magnetic though, so theoretically it *could* be an issue with the mechanical components rather than with the sensor itself... i.e. something stuck in the wrong place getting picked up by the sensor as continuous. Unless you've tried swapping them out already.
If you haven't already, I would at least try that. No need to go all the way to soldering just to find that it was something else

Sure, just did some test with the other mainboard (connector for touchscreen is damaged on this part).
The trackball behaves normal with this combination.
So the sub-PCB must be O.K.
I'll try searching for something weird on the original mainboard.
Damn, this would be much harder to fix i suppose
I'll keep you informed!
Anyway, maybe the datasheet would be of any use for the curious geeks

experts welcome
Hi again,
after some more testing and examination of the hardware stuff, i'm in doubt that this problem is hardware related.
So i started to think of some software related issues.
I know that bootcode and Android filesystem should be aware of bad blocks in NAND memory.
But anyway here's the history of the device (so far i know it):
- It came to me with stock bootloader and firmware 1.5
- A stock update was made to firmware 1.6
- I did a downgrade to RC7 using a goldcard
- Rooted the device using telnet
- Installed cm-recovery-1.4
- Followed the steps from cyanogen's wiki to move to v4.2.12.2
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_G1/Dream_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod
- Also did a radio update to 2.22.19.26i
- Installed Hard-SPL as well
Everthing went fine, also no problems during registering to a google account.
I am able to boot into HSPL and the cm recobery is also intact.
It's very strange that the trackball weirdness did not change during all these up/downgrades.
I also got some issues with the power button.
Sometimes the device can not be set to sleep and immediately comes back into active state
Apart from that the device behaves quite normal...
What the hell is wrong with this device?
Could there still be some corrupt areas in NAND caused by bad blocks even after reflashing the system?
Any advice would be welcome!

scholbert

Yes, my trackball likes to 'triple-click', which causes issues sometimes, especially when submitting web forms. I even have to use Ra_mon recovery over cyan because he has option to use talk button where my trackball multi-clicking would bypass the 'click home to continue any other key to abort' by auto-clicking to abort.

Sounds like hardware related damage, because this occurs in recovery mode as well. Maybe the pushbutton underneath the trackball causes this issue, while pressed.
Could be some corrosion or similar causing this...
Is there anyone who made some experience with file corruption or bad blocks?

I have noticed some weirdness in the power button, but I am thoroughly convinced that, at least in my case, it must be hardware related.... if I just shove down on the power button with the pad of my finger, it goes off and then right back to the lock screen. If I press the power button on the 9-clock point with a finger nail, it behaves as expected.
Although I must admit that this appeared coincidentally with a radio firmware upgrade.
Hey there,
I have been having an odd issue too although one that has not been mentioned. About a week ago when i scrolled "left" or while landscape "down" the trackball got jammed every 3 rotations. When you continue scrolling it repairs itself temporarily and then returns. This issue is still present but is not quite so bad.
I'm guessing that this would also be a hardware issue. Its not at a stage where its overbearingly annoying yet, just wondering if anyone else has similar issues.
Hi vonapets,
have you tried to check your hardware with HTC Dream diagnostic programm on sdcard? You'll have to create a "goldcard" and with the file DREADIAG.nbh.
Insert the card and enter bootloader mode, the test software will load automatically. Please search the forum, if you don't know what i'm talking about.
Anyway i did these tests on my device sometime ago and all hardware test were successful.
That's why it's all so strange
Especially i run the button test several times, and the test software did pass with no errors.

???
It's me again
Seems that i'm nearly the only one who suffers from this specific trackball issue.
Anyway i won't give up so early and i really hope to find the reason of this erroneous inputs.
After checking some of the system libs and the framework files concerning file integrity, i started some rudimental debugging with adb.
Working with the tool getevent i found out that input event2 (trackball) is detected correctly and disappears if the trackball remains untouched.
When the random inputs are going to start, input event3 (virtual keyboard) occurs though i did not touch anything (especially not the virtual keyboard)
If i am at home screen the inputs hit google search entry field and most of the time the number "3" is printed.
Input event3 stays active until i fiddle around with the trackball or press some hardware buttons. This sometimes stops the weirdness
I also did check the interrupt counting with cat /proc/interrupts.
Everything looks quite normal....
I am really wondering what is causing this.
Maybe it is a side effect from some damaged hardware part (maybe MSM7201 itself) or it is some software bug that has never been observed before.
Maybe it is the result of some bad timings...
Really got no clue right now!
EDIT: Just for completeness. Also did perform RAM test and other hardware diagnostic with DREADIAG. No errors here!

i have trouble using recovery too. I have to press it very lightly to get it to select only once otherwise it clicks several times ><
Not a huge issue for me really, i don't use it that often, but it is pretty irritating.
But, no. I've never had it enter any numbers or anything, that is strange.
However, i do have a strange problem where when the phone receives a slight knock, like if it's in my pocket and it bangs against something, or i drop it a couple of inches onto my desk or something, a random app will launch. I have no idea why this happens and it's not anything coming in contact with the screen because it happens even when it's locked. It's usually the market which opens too for some strange reason. Oh, it also reboots sometimes too
Yeah, i think i need a new phone

Virtual keyboard? Or touchscreen? Is the virtual keyboard actually listed as a separate input from the touchscreen? If it is, then how could it even be triggered when the vk isn't even opened? Or is the vk open when this weirdness happens? Could it simply be the digitizer that's borked?
Here's a REAL SIMPLE IDEA: clean the digitizer with rubbing alcohol. Can't hurt, and now that you bring touch events into the picture, there is a little bit of a dejavu feeling starting to come over me -- not from personal experience mind you, but I do recall someone mentioning something about a greasy digitizer causing some weird problems.... that went away when it was properly cleaned.
And if nothing else, if it happens to be a digitizer problem and the digitizer is totally borked, try disconnecting it. You should still be able to navigate by trackball and hack on it without a functioning touchscreen.
I know it sounds confusing, but it's true...
Thanks for the replies!

BTW, you may type characters on the vk simultanously, while there are numerous 3's fired from somewhere inside the system.
The ascii changes if i also scroll the trackpad....

Nope!
Already did test with disconnecting the digitizer, same behaviour.
Very wicked and confusing
I really think there must be something destroyed inside the MCU.
Short circuit or ESD damage on a GPIO bank of the chip.
I will do further debugging.....

...not givin' up
Hey there,
i don't know if this is still of interest for someone, but anyway here's updated information about this confusing behaviour:
- booting into recovery console (different kernel, only initrd running from RAM)
- scrolling up with the trackball causes ASCII char "u" in this console
- after scrolling the hardware keyboard is blocked
Using SHR kernel:
- used sd boot image from leviathan and flashed it to the boot partition
- sdcard is used as rootfs
- system boots up after login i enter the console
- scrolling up with the trackball causes strange ASCII string "u542i3" in this console
- after scrolling the hardware keyboard is not blocked
Pretty sure that some parts of hardware are causing this "ghost" input.
I decided to put the mainboard into pure alcohol for some hours.
Though the humidity stickers on my mainboard never turned to red, i just want to make sure that there's no dirt causing this strange effect.
Anyway it's my last hope....
P.S.: Anyone ever programmed a simple commandline tool to observe the state of the systems GPIO?
Would be very helpful to find the needle in the stack
EDIT: In the meantime i found out a lot, about the internal components of the HTC dream.
If there's some interest, i may open up a new thread post some information about it.
Cheers,
scholbert
O.K. no ideas anymore.

Hey, new to this forum, and just stumbled across your post searching for a resolve to my problem, which seems to be very similar to yours.
Phone seems to work fine except:
When rolling trackball up (even slightest movement) I get virtual keyboard appearing on screen and u542i3.....(continuous 3's) types into the searchbar.
Also MENU button is inop, although one on keyboard is ok.
When locked, sometimes the screen and key backlights constantly go on and off.
Seems to flatten the battery pretty quick.
I stripped the phone checked everything clean and dry etc, tried turning the trackball upside down on the offchance, but no change. I have done nothing software related as I'm not too clued up on that side of things. It has the std 1.6 operating system as far as I know.
I have no clue where to go from here with it though, think my best bet might just be to get another one that needs a screen or something and use mine for parts?
Good to see I'm not alone with this issue though so there's a chance someone may figure it out.
....at least i'm not alone
Hi ram5ay,

True, i also observed this issue.
Seems that parts of the hardware are damaged or not set up correctly due to some other error.
As a result some of the GPIO's may act as an output and are shortened to Vio or GND. This could be a reason why the battery got drained so fast
Anyway, as i already wrote down, got no clue how to fix this.....

GPS no fix, please help!

Hello, I'm a "noob" on android but I think I'm a quick learner but I really need help..
I have a note 3 N-9005 that I bought and in the second day I was annoyed with touchwiz and I installed temasek's rom and kernel (I dont know how to flash kernel, it changed when I changed rom).. But I'm loving this rom!
One of this days I installed a app called gps test and gps status and I got no fix! sometimes 2sat. but almost allways 0sat.
I want to know if its the phone its damaged, rom problem, kernel or whatever..
Can somebody give me a light please? Many thanks
GPS is kernel.
Flash stock rom and test gps .
and try Device Only (GPS only).. not high accuracy
thanks for the replys!
I installed stock rom and still having the problem, installed back temasek rom and I started to think that the problem was hardware.
I read some guides were they say to tight up the screws on the back.. I did that and no improvement...
Then I removed the 10 screws and lift up the gps contact and clean it up because it may oxidize.. But still no improvement
After some attempts I started to think that the problem was maybe of the mid frame (were the screws are screwed) because it was a little bent...
I put it straigh, puxing it hard to a flat table.. Assembled and now I have a fix in 5 seconds or less... I think that maybe this can help somebody
And sorry for my bad english
You can't do anything I think. This phone has some problem with GPS, the N9005 version I mean, it never worked properly for me. The only think you need to keep in mind that, this device depends heavily on AGPS data, so just make sure that AGPS data is being downloaded at a frequent interval. Use GPS Status to set the interval.
There was an app, which would show you GPS locked always, probably it faked some data to make the phone realise that AGPS data is latest, some Indian dude posted it quite a long time ago in this Q&A section, it worked for me, didn't check about accuracy, but phone would always show GPS locked! Have forgotten the name of the app though, you could do a search.
try *#9090#
menu > key input> Q
menu> key input > 0000
wait awhile
UMTS > Common > NV rebuild > NV rebuild > system , protocol , GPS ,IMS.
you might have a problem with the antenna ... i had
you had to open the phone ... get to the gps module and play with the contacts ... it's not that difficult
try to find instructions on youtube
Thanks for the replys..
I said before "After some attempts I started to think that the problem was maybe of the mid frame (were the screws are screwed) because it was a little bent...

So.. the problem is fixed!!!! and it wasnt the contacts on the board, it was the mid frame that was "bent"
many thanks
Could you/ someone tell me where is this mid frame exactly? Will you have to unscrew the screws or one can do that without removing them?
A picture of this mid frame section would really be great.
hi.. what I called mid frame is the part that comes off when you take out the screws that you can see when you take out the back cover.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1ntOfJS_1c (see this video to 3:10min) take attention what he says at 3:00min)
here is a photo of what you will see after remove that "mid frame" http://s3.postimg.org/gnfn2hslf/image.jpg
in the photo in red you can see gps /lte / wifi antenas... they should look like the ones on the image!!! they cant be bended, if they are put them in the right spot ... you can lift them a little to make beter contact with the "mid frame"
now what I made to fix mine:
my mid frame was bent because its plastic.. I pressed it hard against a flat table to unbend it...
put all on place and make sure the mid frame contacts are toching the antenas that you can see on the image..
screws need to be put in place screwed till the end to make the mid fame make a good contact with antenas.
srry for my english, just trying to help

Buying a Used Samsung Note 4 - Any suggestions?

There are no common issues with the phone. However if you are buying used phone you have to look for these things:
Fist of all, if someone is selling his/her phone, find out the reason why selling, there might be 2 reasons, faulty phone or he/she is upgrading his/her phone.
Phone's Condition --> external condition (such as screen has scratches or side scratches etc.)
Camera: Check Camera is working fine - both front & back ( take some pictures)
Sensors: Check phone's sensor is working, some of the phone's sensors sometimes not working. For Screen / Sensor and other software related functionalities you can dial this number and check sensor, phone's color and screen, if broken internally or not. (*#0*#) - dial this from Samsung phone dialer.
Check Speakers are working fine, make call and check both the speakers.
Regarding Software related: it depends upon the ROM, which ROM you are running on your phone. If stock ROM, phone should be working fine, if he has ROOTED his phone and running custom ROM, then you will find some bugs in custom ROMS.
There are no such software related issues with all Note Series, they are awesome phone.
[*]Also, check if phone is repaired before or not ( you can open the back panel (battery door) and check the screws, if they have scratches then phone was opened and repaired.
Battery: Check the battery, I will tell you the procedure: take out the battery and put it on table & rotate it clockwise or anticlockwise, if it's not rotating, means battery is OK, if continuously rotating, it means battery dead, or about to dead, you need to replace it.
This is what I knew, & I have shared with you.
Good Luck!

test it with a sim and sdcard both inserted.
some note 4's may seem fine, but will suffer freezes, crashes, reboots, and boot failures when both cards are inserted because the motherboard is dying.
make sure you swipe it completely so you don't get busted with somebody else's dirty/illegal porn LOL

Good Luck!

This is some great stuff! thank you very much.

test it with a sim and sdcard both inserted.
some note 4's may seem fine, but will suffer freezes, crashes, reboots, and boot failures when both cards are inserted because the motherboard is dying.

Will do, thanks for the tip.

lmao.
One more thing, get bill & box along with the phone, if no bill then get any ID proof of the seller, to make sure that its jis phone not stolen one
If you can try to see a grey or dark color background to see if there is any screen burn in

I'll check the phone using Pixel Test before buying for sure.

This one might be tough, I will try to acquire this. Thanks

No sensors working (except FP and GPS)

I haven't done anything unusual really, just went from stock 7.0, unlocked BL through Odin, wiped and then installed scripted's Lineage and all my sensors are not working (light, prox, rotation, etc.). Anyone have any solution for this? Or if there is a way to reset to the latest official ROM and try again that would be helpful too.
Update: I flashed stock and the sensors still do not work.

Normally i only use stock rom but have installed Lineage 17.1.
In some cases settings will have to be turn on.
eg: Screen rotation - go into settings - Display - advance - Rotation settings
Rotate Home Screen - long press on home screen - select Home settings
If in doubt you can re-flash lineage in twrp or stock rom with Odin.
Thanks for your suggestion. However, I just flashed the stock rom with Odin and the sensors are still not registering, no reading from any of them? I'm really not sure what to do, I feel like maybe some file was wipe in TWRP that registered the sensors?
If you have any protective case remove it and test.
On stock rom in phone app enter *#0*# should bring up a test menu which you can test your sensors or you can download from playstore ( or other mirror sites ) apps which will test your senors eg: cpu-z, samsung phone info.
This appears to be a bigger issue, one that appeared via a software update. It might be hardware related. There are many other users experience the same.

Rooting... experimental roms can destroy hardware. Override built in firmware safeguards.
Mostly it applies to overclocking but without knowing the exact circuit layout the engineers used, the components maximum specs and heat sinking capacity 3rd party rooms are an educated guess that could overlook critical design limitations. It could as simple as not setting a limited duty cycle to a component.
While not perhaps common, it is a risk.
Another reason why I wouldn't root a valuable device.
You can trying disconnecting the battery and hard resetting all the chipsets with the stock rom already loaded.

My S8 (SM-G950FD) all sensors are not working. Can anyone please help fix this?
I purchased new Samsung Galaxy S8 (SM-G950FD) just 02 weeks ago and since last Tuesday (22nd May), all sensors (iris scanner, proximity, gyroscope, compass) are not working. FYI there are no damages since it was never dropped. I suspect if it is due the firmware update 8.0. I tried factory reset...

It looks as if it is a manufacturing defect rather than one from rooting/development. Perhaps disconnecting the battery might be one possible solution. I was looking into whether there is a way to discard the motherboard as there sometimes is in some laptops.

I hope the hard reset works.
It was operating normally until the new firmware?
There's your answer if the reset fails to work.
The mobo and displays are the most valuable components. The mobo presents more challenges than the display because it contains the device's ID and must be compatible with all the daughter PCBs/modules. So you need the correct variant. The imei issue is one I don't know enough about to address however many here do who can help you.
