Check out "disable service" for blocking OTA [root] - Fire TV General

A while back I was looking at getting my phone to last as long as possible on a charge, and I came across Disable Service in the play store.
It is free and pretty neat. You'll need a keyboard or some way to generate a tab keystroke to get from "general apps" to "system apps."
Once there, in "Amazon Device Client Platform" you can disable both the "manual update checker service" and the "Scheduled Update Checker Service"
After doing that, you can head into system settings and see that you can no longer even launch the check for updates - after disabling using the pm disable method, I think there was a risk of accidentally triggering an update.

To get from Gerneral to System just press down on the remote until the first service highlights then press right.
I gave this a try on mine and you also have to disable the OTAService as well.
Once you reboot the FTV it seems to take a little longer for the home screen to come up, maybe waiting for the OTA checks to error out?

I think PM disable works fine as well. But there are people who swear they did it and still got updates. I just wanted to test this to see if there is an easy alternative for people who don't do ADB well.
It looks like it works fine.

I also think pm disable works and is fine.
However, my impression is that pm disable can be overridden, by accident or on purpose, by manually looking for an update - that if you have pm disabled updates and press that "look for updates" button, it will go out and look.
Using this method, the button does not activate a search for an update, and gives you visual feedback that it has not worked.
I also wanted a display of what was disabled that I could see from the gui rather than by using adb commands to list packages and states. (There are other service components that this tool can enable / disable.)

I tried your method, but the "Check for System Update" button is NOT greyed out. However under "Installed Date" and "Last Checked" it keeps showing "Checking now..." Furthermore pressing the "Check for System Update" button still triggers an Update action (even though it causes an "Update error" message). I don't know if the error is caused by disabling the 3 services using the Disable Service app, or the fact I have the update domains blocked on my router
Just wanted to say that your method doesn't seem to work the same across all devices

You have to disable the OTA service as well not just manual update checker service and the scheduled update checker service.

Anyone else using this method and not seeing the Update button greyed out? I'd like to use it as it seems a little cleaner then the pm disable one

sorry if I implied the button was greyed out - I'm not in front of it right now, but my memory of my setup is that the button is there and can be pressed, but pressing it gives you an error message telling you "update failed."
I've read of folks who were pm disabled accidentally updating themselves, and this app seems to prevent that from succeeding.

What I see after using the "Disable Service" app and disabling the 3 services (ManualUpdateCheckerService, ScheduledUpdateCheckerService and OTAService) is that the box is still "trying" to get an update - ie when "Check for System Update" button is highlighted it shows:
Current version - 51.1....
Installed date - Checking now...
Last Checked - Checking now...
whereas if I press the button it will Fail. It's the "Checking now..." thing that worries me a bit, hence why I keep asking.
Thanks for your help,

"Uninstall Not Successful" when trying to unistall Extended Controls

When I try to uninstall Extended Controls on my Evo 4G (by going to Manage Applications -> Downloaded -> Extended Controls -> Uninstall) it asks me "Uninstall application?" and then when I hit "ok" immediately tells me "Uninstall not successful".
I've tried clearing the app data, force stopping it, I've even tried hitting cancel instead of okay, none of which have gotten me anywhere.
My phone is unmodified (meaning no root or anything).
I had downloaded this popular app, but upon realizing that the 4G, 3G/2G, and Network buttons don't work, I returned it (why is it so popular?). I clicked the refund and uninstall button, and luckily got my refund, even though it won't uninstall. I had emailed the developers about the errored buttons to which they simply replied "I'm so sorry but Android limitations doesn't allow us to do more."... which seemed like an flippant reply to a bug report. Perhaps I could try and email them about the unistall, but I'm thinking that won't get me anywhere.
So now I still have this app, even though I've got my refund, which would actually be kinda cool, if it weren't for the fact the app doesn't work and I kinda want it off my phone now.
Any tips besides a hard reset?
Thanks
4g works fine give it a sec enable toasts so you know it's turning on or off , 3g/2g on the otherhand requires root
newest version has screen lock ability , go to menu , setting , security , device administrators and uncheck it from list will uninstall
Great app I would keep it

Your are the MAN
I was banging my head as to why it will not uninstall. It has got corrupted. Widgets configurations can be seen under profile tab once i try to place a new widget on the screen. But the widget configurations disappeared when I open the app from the drawer and choose widgets (it was present earlier, but now it shows nothing)
So the only way to open is to do it like I want to create a new widget from homescreen everytime... Clearing data etc did not work and it wouldnt let me uninstall... Thanks for the tip!!
No prob

In the hope that this might help you (if it's not too late) or anybody else who reads this, give the following a try:
-- Enable Developer Options (tap Settings > About Phone > Build number 7 times).
-- In Developer Options, tap "Running services".
-- Look for either "Motorola Update Services" or "Device Management" or something similar.
-- STOP the Ota service.
-- You'll have to do this every time you restart the phone.
I haven't gotten an OTA download yet, even when connecting to PC and running Motorola Device Manager and letting it check for updates. The result I got for that was:
There are no updates for your device at this time.
Current version:
24.14.24.griffin_verizon.verizon.en.US
Disclaimer: This seems to work on a (Verizon/carrier-unlocked) XT1650 that's still running the original (MCL24.203-22) first release for the Moto Z Force Droid. Depending on version and exact model, your mileage may vary.

You tried both fake checkin apps?
Post your your stock motocheckin app please.
Use Super Manager, app manager. I linked it in my op.
I was able to go into my settings and disable all permissions for the moto care update app. If it still pops up a notification that the install is ready, you can long press on the notification and then click the little "i" symbol on the right and disable notifications for that app. Unfortunately it has already downloaded the update so it's on my phone as 3.6GB worth of space being used and I'm not able to click the options to remove the data. It's not installing, but still taking up the space.

Unknown Sources Doesn't Stay Enabled Permanently

I sideload a lot of apps, and an annoying kwirk that I've found is that unknown sources does not stay enabled permanently. Everytime I attempt to install an app from unknown sources, I have to hop into settings and recheck unknown sources.
Yes, I do uncheck "this install only"

I think it's a definitely a big, because there is an option to uncheck "for this install only", however even if you do, it still reverts it back. So definitely a bug.
Yes it's annoying... But today when I try to sideload a app.. It prompt to enable unknown sources and takes to settings menu, here don't check the box rather click the Unknown sources it will prompt you a usual warning and below warning there is a check box as 'allow this instalation only' un check it and click ok...
It will stay forever
Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
Actually, it seems to stay for a set period of time, possibly until the phone is locked, or about 10 minutes, not 100% sure, but I sideloaded about 40 humblebundle apps over the course of 2 hours yesterday, and that dialog came back between every sideloading session. I could do several at a time, but when i locked, and went off to do other things, returning to sideload more would result in the same dialog again. Checking the box made the dialog appear every time i tried to sideload. This doesn't appear to be a bug, it appears to be a security feature that has no option for removal.
I've got a bunch of packages frozen with Package Disabler Pro and my unknown sources is sticking. Verizon, US model.
I pulled the XML file in that thread and it freezes all kinds of Sammy bloat, including Knox, so one or a combination is flipping that back.
I'm taking updates as they come.

Noticed some settings in developer options not sticking either. Just took latest VZW update so maybe that'll fix it!
Try to uninstall Samsung Pay and the framework. I did it on my S7 Edge and it fixes this problem.
Hence, I opt not to use S.Pay.

ahh so thats the "critical update" i declined. Was wondering what it was since there were no apps that needed updating in the store. Wonder what it does
It's update for fixing DQA keeps stopping issue.
I had mine suddenly download and install 3 things from the galaxp app store yesterday without me knowing anything about it. Personalized service client, samsung pass, and LED view cover icon editor. I thought I had been hacked and someone was downloading sutff to my phone!! No idea why it suddenly started doing that by itself. I have turned auto update apps off now in the galaxy app store, I guess they were already installed and were just auto updating (and i have no disabled them all in package disabler since they all seemed like junk).
I dont know what DQA does, wonder if its another one we can safely disable.

From what I understand, DQA has to do with checking the quality of your Wi-Fi. You'll notice if you turn your Wi-fi off, you'll stop getting those messages. Some have had success with going into your running Apps and force stopping the DQA. That didn't help me though and rebooting several times (which has also helped some) didn't work for me either. Still working through options. If anyone has other ideas...

I havent had any issues with or or any messages about it either before it updated or after. I usually have wifi on but have turned it off today and not noticed anything either. I have not disabled it in package disabler as i didnt know what it did, it doesnt seem to be using battery so i will just leave it on.
This is what I've found from Android Authority...
- Reboot device (may need to repeat a few times)
- Clear cache partition through recovery (turn off phone, press and hold Power, Volume Up and Bixby button. On Android screen, when you see ‘No command’ hold power and press volume up to access recovery. Use volume keys to highlight ‘Wipe cache partition’ and press Power to select. Highlight ‘Yes’ and press Power to confirm, then reboot phone)
- Turn off Wi-Fi
- Disable high performance mode
- Force quit DQA app (go to Settings > Apps and tap the overflow menu (three dots at the top right), tap ‘Show system apps’ and locate DQA. Tap it and ‘Force stop’)
- Disable DQA app with BK Package Disabler (costs $1.50, does not require root). Install app, grant permissions, swipe to System tab, find DQA and check the box next to it (simply uncheck to re-enable).
I haven't tried all these options yet. Let me know if any help should you decide to try.
I'm bumping this topic. Tried googling DQA, but very little seems to be known about it. If it indeed is checking the quality of the wifi, is it really safe to disable?

Hi, have you found any info regarding DQA? I found it among the recommended apps to disable/uninstall on Universal Android Debloater, but still I read somewhere that some of the apps disabled through UAD might be important, so I'm not sure about what to do.

Same. I searched the web for this and this thread is the only thing that came up. I wonder if it has to do with apps auto updating in the background or something... Although if it was just a google play store thing then it'd probably be more widespread across other phones, and we happen to have the same phone. So maybe it's some zte thing. I'm trying to think of what of theirs auto updates... Maybe the lock screen backgrounds.. I know those update periodically. It's not a system/os update cuz I have none of those available.

Okay, let's try to find the culprit. Do you guys have root? I believe those are toast notifications. Download "Toast Source" from the Play Store and see which app is bothering
I don't have root. I just installed the Toast Source app but I haven't seen the notification in a while so I'll have to just wait and see.
Ok, Toast Source just caught it and apparently the built in Download Manager app (orange icon, I'm assuming it's from zte) is giving the message. The last two times it showed up was i think after i had left range of a wifi network (screen might have been off), and after waking up in the morning and unlocking my phone.
I also had no active downloads running, and don't see anything in the list in the download manager app, so it's gotta be something happening automatically in the background.
