Windows 8.1 Users be careful!!! - Nexus 7 (2013) General

I thought i was going crazy! I lost MTP and ADB and could not figure out why. I forced the Google USB driver but it still got overwritten!
I turned off automatic driver updates and deleted all drivers... Found this waiting for me!
It caused all sorts of issues. If your on Win 8.1 be warned!!!

Not sure if this a Google issue or a Windows 8.1 issue...
Post what you know :good:

Got the same update, it didn't recognize my N7. Uninstalled it in device manager and hid the update in Windows update. When I connected the N7 back, Win 8.1 installed the correct ADB driver. No issues since then.

I never use automatic updates or driver updates built into windows, the windows update drivers a lot of the time can be problematic. When I saw that update I immediately hide it.
A tool you can use to clean up USB driver installs is USBDeview,
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html
It allows you to uninstall all USB devices, including those disconnected, and hubs. Have to be careful when removing connected devices like mouse and keyboard, or your computer may freeze. If I have issues with connecting my android devices, I use this to clean up so I can reinstall the drivers.

Good info!
In all my years of computing and Android I have never seen Microsoft push a bad driver so I always had it on Auto Pilot. Learned my lesson!

i got hit with this too... switched back to Google driver and everything is working again

Thanks, I was wondering if my Nexus was not recognised because of Elemental X..

I am on Windows 8.1 and I have never faced such an issue, but still thanks for the warning.

I have auto updates turned on too.Apparently the driver was already installed on my PC but MTP and ADB work fine.

I didn't like the look of it when it showed up in Win Update, so I just hid it, thanks for the heads up anyway!

If you look in the device manager you might find multiple instances of the driver under the ACER device. Deleting all of the "greyed out" (ghost) ones may resolve the problem. Otherwise deleting them all and then connecting the device should work. If not, delete the device under Portable devices, then connecting your device will clear up the problem.

And yes, that update was an unexpected a$$-kicker. It knocked out N5 and N4 too.

after a looooooooooong download session / install whichever ... the next day i woke up and ran Kies it throws me this error
Kies error, MSC.Thunder.UI.Controls.ExceptionPopup
and it wasn't even "upgraded", it's still the old one, damn piece of Kies
now it broke the old one, tried to uninstall clean up reinstall it 3 times already still doesn't work
gonna try CCleaner and see what else i can hack out of WinXP SP3 to get the piece of Kies to work again
The only reason i keep the piece of Kies around is to check for Official ROMs nothing more, because it's a piece of Kies, it's a miracle when it works.
I'm thinking about running it (Kies) inside a XP virtual machine. Kies reminds me of software that existed 5 years ago that came with printers and sucked like nothing else. Inside a virtual machine USB is the only issue that I see. You may have trouble if your host is 64bit??
I NEVER upgrade kies from the application. Just goto the Samsung site, and download the new version. Works without problems
I really hope Samsung enables OTA updates!

i did that, it was still the old version on the samsung website
seems like the new version is only available through the kies software itself

it works fine, actually works better than connecting it to the host machine
i'm using VMware with USB and WinXP SP3 installed as guest
when i plug in my phone, it willl automatically launch and sync with the phone inside WinXP SP3
i had some trouble with Kies when it was on 64 bit installed on Win7 itself
The solution to fixing the error is to uninstall Kies
delete the directory C:\Program Files\Samsung\Kies
then reinstall Kies newest version http://www.samsungmobile.co.uk/mobile-phones/samsung-galaxy-s-support
v1.5.3.10093
info also on wiki

I only got rid of that error by using the older version instead. Then that one kept failing flashes and re-downloading the whole thing every time it tried again. Who writes this crap? Eventually it broke the phone to the point it couldn't do anything else with it. I was trying to use the official tools to avoid any hassle, but after I gave up on Kies it took about 5 minutes to sort everything out with Odin.

[Q] Omnia 7 / WP7 drivers won't install

I'm a bit stuck here. For about 2 weeks I haven't been able to sync my phone. It turns out that the drivers aren't installed properly. Unfortunately all the obvious ways to fix this (re-installing Zune, update drivers, a different cable) haven't worked. Has anyone got any ideas? The phone is running 7008.
Thanks

try another usb-port... (serious )
What OS are you using? It appears to be either Vista or 7.
When I had Vista I had numerous problems with USB devices not working right / not installing properly.
I solved my USB issues in Vista by overwriting the standard USB drivers with ones from Windows XP.
There are a lot of posts over the net about Vista USB problems. Maybe worth trying this link if you are using Vista.
http://www.thedave.ca/geek/windows-vista-usb-device-detection-problems/
I'm on Windows 7. My phone has been playing up recently, but I also installed some alternative USB drivers a few weeks ago, so it could be either or none of those reasons.
I got a message the other day saying "the device has malfunctioned", but just the once. It hasn't happened since.
I've just tried all the USB ports and it hasn't made any difference. It's a tough one. Even the MS fix it tool fails. I just can't get that driver updated.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks
Can you try updating on another pc?
I did want to try that, but my laptop isn't working well and it turns out it's on XP SP2, so Zune doesn't work. I would update it but don't have to now as I just solved it!
The problem was indeed LibUSB. I remember having issues with that thing years ago. It hadn't uninstalled properly, so I re-installed it and removed it while in Safe Mode after reading about problames with other devices all over the net. Everything is fine now . Shame I already lost my Zune profile, but no big deal.
Thanks for the help guys

Now after a reset of the phone, device isn't recognized and the connected as media device doesn't show up anymore. Tried more than 1 computer.
Try uninstall the USB drivers from your PC. Or try other USB ports to detect your device. Sounds like your USB drivers has screwed up. Should not be your device problem.

EDIT : May it have something to do with this?

Before start working on the hardware, I suggest to investigate the software side further. Have you make a factory reset? (Worst case). Try enable and disable the USB debugging mode as well. http://androidteen.com/how-to-enable-usb-debugging-mode-on-android-devices/
Try to toggle both media file mode and camera mode. See what is the response from your device to pc.

You uninstall the driver via "Device Manager" which u can get by right clicking "My computer" and click on Manage.
Then find the device manager tab and find your device on the list.

[HELP] My Nexus 4 is no longer recognized

Hello, since the update to android 4.3 my Nexus 4 is no longer recognized by my Windows 7/8 computers.
I have tried many drivers and software NRT, I also formatted several times.
I've used both connections (MTP and PTP) and USB debugging mode.
Several micro usb cables
Now I know what to do and the problem is that the phone to bootloader unlocked so I do not know if Google agree to exchange it for free.
Desolated if I make mistakes but English is not my native language
Thank you in advance
I don't think you need to exchange it and Google should exchange it even if the bootloader is unlocked, provided you factory reset it I guess. And to re-lock the bootloader you just have to boot it into fastboot mode and type in the command line: fastboot oem lock
(Just follow this guide to return the phone to stock if you need: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010312)
As for recognizing the device, maybe the MTP driver become unrecognized or conflicted, check in the Device Manager of your computer it should be called "Nexus 4" under Portable Devices. If it's not, right click on it and uninstall it. Then reconnect the phone and let it reinstall the driver, also try switching on and off USB Debugging option in the Developer mode.
If that still don't work, try this method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35667806&postcount=23
Because this is likely a driver issue even if you get a new Nexus 4 your computer still might not recognize it. The issue is likely on your computer side, unless your phone's microUSB port is damaged somehow.
Thank you for answering.
I tried the command to lock the bootloader but it does not work because my device is not recognized
That catches image

You need to install the adb/fastboot driver, again, follow the link I posted for instruction. But you can download the Universal Naked Driver here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1996051

I tried to update the drivers but Windows told me that the driver is already up to date
Uninstall it and also check the option to delete the driver, then rescan the devices and reinstall it.

Without success
In that case I suggest do a clean Windows 7 installation and reinstall the drivers on a clean system . Or wipe out Windows completely and install the latest Ubuntu which will detect your device automatically.
OK I installed ubuntu, I 'll let you know

Hello, I have the same problem.
My phone is in the official service center, and the last information I have is that it needs logic board replacement which costs aproximately 230 euros.
They would repair it under warranty if it wasn't rooted and flashed with TWRP. Of course, I dont want to pay that amount of money, so I'll try to find to buy a N4 with cracked screen and/or back and take the board from it.
So, if anyone has the same problem, the only solution is replacing the logic board or using ADB over wifi if the kernel supports that feature. Nothing else will work

Using toolkits could be a headache, at some points. They are good, and ease out things, but I don't prefer using them.
Here, in your situation, it seems like a problem with drivers itself.
Okay, so do one thing. Connect your 6P to the PC, and while keeping it connected, go to Control Panel > Device Manager. Grab a screenshot, and share it here.

Okay, so the device here is using the regular Microsoft MTP drivers, I guess.

Wait. Once you connect the device, do you bring down the notification panel, and select MTP as the desired connection?
Actually, by default, the charging mode is enabled. You just need to switch it to MTP or other desired modes. Hope you know that?
