[ROOT] Tweak for even longer battery time - try it yourself! - Xperia Z2 Tablet General

The battery life of the Z2 Tablet is already really good - but I looked for more
Aside from the usual things like debloating, Greenify etc. I found the following helpful (ROOT, custom recovery, busybox needed):
1. In the Settings of the tablet, enable "Stamina Mode" (of course, if you didn't already).
2. In the Stamina mode menu, check "Restrict performance". I have no clue what it does, but since I don't think Sony incorporates a placebo in it's firmwares I guess it does something.
You'll notice that the performance of "normal" apps (which are not games or other heavy-load stuff) will be as before.
3. Now "my" tweak:
Download a kernel tuning app - I use "Trickster Mod".
Increase the Read Ahead Buffer Size to 3072 (default: 512).
Change the I/O scheduler from ROW to DEADLINE.
Change the CPU governor from ONDEMAND to INTERACTIVE.
I now have clearly longer battery life, and at the same time operation is as snappy as ever.
Would be great if some people also test this and report.

I will try and i tell you if it works

Thanks for sharing your settings.
Will test it now.
I wonder, why no one tweaks the stock kernel.
In my opinion it would be useful to undervolt the kernel.
But maybe in future ....

Tried. When the tablet goes to deep sleep it results a "deep sleep of death". Have to force a reboot of the tab.

Oh, that's unfortunate. Are you sure you applied exactly the settings above?
I have the tweak activated for several weeks now, and never had such problems.
Seems to be dependent on the individual device...

Yes, I've applied the same settings than you've listed in the first post of the thread.
I suppose that it dependent on the individual device, as you wrote.
I've restore the settings to the default and it seems that the SOD problem are still there. I assume there is another cause.
I've seen that I also lost the access to the recovery, impossible that your settings be responsible in this case.
Investigation in progress...

Solved!
I've reroot my device and reinstall the recovery, no more problem of SOD and get now again access to the recovery.
But, reapplied your settings make the same problems, SOD and no more access to the recovery.
Seems to be dependent on the individual device...
No matters for me but other have to take care.
My device : Xperia Z2 Tab 16Gb Wifi, root, locked bootloader, last stock rom from Sony (.402), dual recovery installed (CMW, TWRP, Philz's)
Regards

I followed the op yesterday and have had no issues so far. Haven't noticed it running slower either. If you try stability test, the cpu is still running at max speed of 2265mhz so this doesn't seem to underclock the cpu when it's needed, if you run it when the battery is lower it's only 1.9ghz. I'm not sure if this is because of the restrict performance option or because it's gone into low battery mode. My low battery mode is set to kick in at 10%, so I'll test the cpu speed at 20% when it eventually drops that far. Incidentally, stabilitytest is a great way to discharge the battery if you're at 5% or something and want to run it completely down before charging.

So I've done a complete cycle and got over 8 hours of usage out of this Beast along with 3 days of sleep time. Much better than before. Thanks a lot!

As I said! You're welcome!
Nevertheless it seems important to point out that this tweak should be applied wirh CAUTION and only with a backup (since it seems that some devices somehow have difficulties with the settings and crash).

Uh...pfff...let's see...it's a quite early model, I bought it about 2 weeks after the German launch...
Don't know where to look for the production number, there are many numbers on the tablet, none containing digits which look like a production date...

It could be a good idea to add the software requirements ( like custom recovery, busybox...) to your first post.

Having a custom recovery really has nothing to do with the settings in the OP. All that is really needed is root access. Most OEM builds don't usually show "all" the governors available, but a CPU app will. Understand, you run a risk that the extra governor may not be properly coded to run with the current CPU.
As with the one user with the disappearing recovery, if Sony does like several other tablet OEMs (Acer for example), they have a recovery sh file, that reflashes a stock recovery on a cold boot. Most of those root programs/CWM recoveries remove such file. Drives people crazy if they don't know.
I'll test this theory tomorrow when mine is delivered.

I just tried to follow the steps...
I had root, but for trickster mod u need root and busybox working.
And I wasn't able to install busybox without an custom recovery...
So as long as op points to trickster mod as a tweaking app I guess you have to have root+custom recovery->busybox
If there is a way to install bb without a cr just tell me.

There are several apps on the market that let you install busybox if you have root.

Or simply install XZDualRecovery, and there you have your custom recovery.
Where is the problem? I don't understand some people...

Right,
Now were rooted ive installed this but how do you use it correctly to save battery? theres some way to slow processor when your phone is asleep or something? I carnt seem to find it!
Just tap the widget on the screen, or install widget on screen, then tap it

There's profiles button in the app. You click it, then you enable selected profile and set your CPU speed for it.
The only one I use us to underclock the phone when it's on standby. Can't really tell if it helps as today is the first day I'm using it.

For now, SetCPU will have no effect when running on rooted Desires.
When you pull the sliders across, it seems to have no effect, and the green max and min frequencies remain unchanged. HTC has a driver that they implement which keeps overriding SetCPU. We need to hope they (HTC) release the Kernel source. Once this happens, there will surely be a release of a modified Kernel with SetCPU support and overclocking/undervolting.
Problem is HTC is really slow in releasing the GPL'ed Kernal source, it's borderline, illegal, and very irritating

[DISCUSS][XPOSED]Show off your Xposed Setup!

Welcome to the Xposed Setup Discussion!
Hello Guys, I have started this thread so that we all can share our Xposed setup.
Here are some simple rules to be followed:
(1) Name the xposed modules you use in any order separated by comma(","). Optional: You may also mention specefic settings for individual modules.
(2) Mention the ROM you are using so that other users can get an idea about the compatability of xposed modules.
(3) Conclude something about your setup like hows the performance with your modules enabled or how the modules you use make your device more useful. You may also attach screenshots to show off the changes brought by modules.
Thats it! No other rules to be followed!
Some useful Links:

Xposed Modules Repo
Here is my Setup with Xposed:
Modules - Show Keypad, Youtube Adaway.
ROM - Mahdi 2.7 07/19 Build
Conclusion - Just necessary modules that I use to get rid of the the ads in Youtube and to get the Dialpad popup automatically whenever I open Phone app.:highfive:
Gravity Box
Tinted Status Bar
Here's my set up, Mahdi rom 19/7
SwipeBack (disabled nav bar and using swipe up from bottom as a back gesture, its totally changed the android experience.)
CPUTemp in status bar, this lets me know if some apps are acting up, really handy to have a quick at-a-glance look at my cpu, if the temp is above 50-55 that means something intense is happening, 60+ something really intense such as a 3d game. 40-50 normal temp. It should be below 40 when I'm about to sleep and have it on airplane mode playing a podcast
StatusbarVolume - makes the volume panel a thin bar on the top, non obtrusive when I'm toggling it whilst doing something on the screen, this is just fantastic.
All Notifications Expanded - just my laziness
Complete Action Plus - changes the entire look/feel of the "Open With" pop up, totally customisable and really unmissable once you have it!
Burnt Toast- - shows the app icon in every toast, really cool and neat thing that's hard to miss once you have it
PlayPermissionsExposed - shows all permissions in the new version of play store
ReceiverStop and Wakelock Terminator - both these were used to stop the nlpwakelock problem, I don't remember the specifics but this helps get the phone into deepsleep
StatusbarScrollToTop - really neat feature, don't remember it being in a custom rom
TintedStatusBar - L style before L was a thing, this is what really MAKES the user interface pop
Enable BatteryStats Permission - kitkat disabled batterystats for 3rd party apps like Battery monitor, this re-enables them.
iOS7 X - changes signal/wifi positions similar to ios but keeps the notification icons. I use version 1.02 because it's stable and does what I need it to, along with clock in center.
XDictionary - app that searches for the definition of any word selection, real handy tool
SuggestionsToggle - this is relatively new but makes life easier when trying to enter urls without swiftkey trying to screw them up with spaces!
I'm Not using the usual favourite Gravitybox because most of those features are there in mahdi rom.
Overall, After a long struggle with the galaxy nexus, I can finally say I'm Happy using a smartphone every day!

Tweaks To Improve Battery Life Guide

I can't take credit for any of this as I found it on the Zenfone 2 forums. Here are some additional tweaks to help with battery life.
dangphat0608 is the author, and the post with pictures is here: www.asus.com/zentalk/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=13483
Here's the info:
Hi everyone, i've found a way fix problem battery brain. Before, when i were to sleep battery drain about 5~8% ( 6hours ). Now, just 1~2%. .
Now, Google has put on one of the features, and one of which is "Locate and identify information of Android devices" and "Android Device Manager". It always running background. Of course, things are two sides of it
1.Go to setting > Location > Turn on
2. Change Mode in Location > Battery saving
And turn off Location if you not use.
3. Go to Google settings app > Security > Turn off Allow remote lock and erase and Remotely locate this divice
4. Go to Wifi setting advance > Turn off Ssanning always available
5. Restart your phone
If you read through that ZenTalk thread, you will see that this "tweak" doesn't do anything to improve battery life, as reported by people who tried.
Which one?
For example, turning off the wifi scan increases battery life, as ASUS themselves stated it as a solution. (forum.xda-developers.com/zenfone2/help/battery-improvement-update-t3127953).
I don't know about turning off the remote locking and location services, but it wouldn't hurt to try it.

If you want to increase your battery life.
1. Root your ZF2
2. Install Titanium Backup
3. Open Titanium Backup and Freeze or Uninstall all the Asus and third party crapware pre-installed on the phone
4. Reboot and Enjoy quality battery life
Going through and freezing all the useless crap apps increased my battery life tremendously.

How much gain can this provide? Can you please describe in terms of SOT or standby? I plan to buy ZE550ML, but have been holding back so far, due to the negative battery reviews. Thanks!
Deleting/freezing apps will give better battery and sometimes performance, but it all depends on what's in use vs what should be in use vs what's removed/frozen.
I uninstall junk, I don't care about an OTA not loading. It doesn't bootloop if you remove the apps that it needs to verify, it simply fails to flash. With unlocked/insecure boot though, that problem is gone. I can remove the checks and flash it anyway.
You won't find a single, solid number of what makes your phone perform better when talking about removing pre-installed apps. Some people use them, some people don't. Most of them don't run on start-up or run at all unless you manually open them. Most aren't impacting your phone in any way other than eating up a few MB of space.

Marshmallow - Missing functions (Doze/App Standby; System UI Tuner)

Hi all,
I finally updated my H440n via "LG PC Suite" from Android 5.0.1 (rooted) to Android 6 (which is quite nice and very fast in comparison to 5.0.1). Before I did that, I tried to inform me as good and much as possible.
Hence, there are several features/functions I was looking forward to, inter alia:
1) System UI Tuner (activated via long-pressing the Settings-Symbol in the Quick Settings Dropdown) --> Does not work
2) Doze/App Standby (should be in the Battery-Menu under a submenu; via the three dots in the right-up corner) --> The three dots are not there
In the general thread I believe to remember that, with respect to (1), LG was not implementing the System UI Tuner; so one would only find it in an AOSP ROM, correct?
As far as (2) is concerned, I'm a bit "shocked" not finding this option/menu. Besides the App Permission Management (without root) these two features/functions were a main reason in upgrading the firmware. Does anyone know if Doze is active without any "settings"? Regarding App-Standby I believe it is missing, as there is no settings menu, so the user is unable to exclude an app from this Standby; am I right? Or is there any way to activate it (e.g. via the - mainwhile activated - developers menu)? :fingers-crossed:
Thanks for any help. :good:
Kind regards,
Fazi
PS: Meanwhile I, again, use Greenify (as a replacement for App Standby).
Doze is enabled by default on all devices, if I remember correctly. While it might not show any options, It feels like it's definitely there when looking at the battery life. Also, I use Force Doze to send my phone into doze more often / faster than by default.
As far as I can recall, ForceDoze can enable the original MM feature and add some more settings. However, I've read somewhere that the reason why it's disabled is that LG has implemented their version of the doze function natively, like they integrated features of the Tuner to their own ecosystem. Something that basically suspends apps under certain circumstances. And battery management available for many apps unlocks the full potential for that behaviour. Personally, I've tested the ForceDoze and the untampered feature for LG, and LG is noticeably better. If I genuinely use my phone rarely, distributed in large blocks of time, I can extend battery life to up to three days. That tells me that there's definitely something under the hood, and that it works.
Sent from my LG-H440n using Tapatalk
Thanks so far. I hoped that LG implemented it, only without showing any settings/menu.
On the contrary, since I use Android 6, my 1WeatherWidget is not refreshing the "clock" any more. After about half an hour it gets stuck. Just if I open the App via tapping the weather of that widget, the clock refreshes to the current time. The android clock and the alarm are luckily not affected. Could that be a failure of the LG-implemented doze?
In the general App-Menu, under the point "Battery Management" at any app installed so far, there is no settings-possiblity at all. This is why I was wondering, if LG really implemented anything (Doze/App Standby) in their MM ROM.
Besides, both of you didn't mention "App Standby", which would be a bit tricky by LG to implement without offering the user any kind of whitelist, right? :silly:
Thanks for the hint with force doze, which I already read a while ago here on XDA, but interpreted it wrong. I found this feature in Greenify too under "agressive doze". As I already use that app I will give it a try in Greenify in a few days (try to whitelist "1WeatherWidget") and keep you updated.
Thanks again.

I think LG took a different approach.
The screenshot above is from my battery usage app list. AquaMail has a setting to ignore battery optimization, and it works whenever I get an email, no matter the inactivity period. I've only found one other app that gave the option. (No weather app, btw. - if you find one, let me know!)
It seems that the app must provide some concrete setting in order for this doze exception to be functional. I have no idea if this is a Marshmallow thing, an LG quirk, or simply a case of a really good app developer, because the AquaMail development cycle is off the charts.
The option, if it exists, is only accessible from the battery view. The only way I've found to check is if you go to Apps, select an app, and then review its battery usage. Though this doesn't work if the app wasn't used in a while.
On a different note, it might be possible to access this battery menu if it was secreted away by LG. There are several such menus, like one for multi window management, that are actually present in the rom, just not functional on our device. Many can be accessed by some apps like More Shortcuts, that list all the calls of a given app, like Settings. Though it requires much more research...
Well I'll be. This was easier than I'd thought. You need to use a custom shortcut app like More shortcuts, and find the shown activity within the settings.
This is what you get:
WhatsApp and AquaMail were already checked. I presume this is the exclusion list. Checked my weather app in there, hopefully I 'll know by morning.
Sent from my LG-H440n using Tapatalk
Thanks a lot for the guidance. I set system language on German (Austria) and needed some time to find it under "Optimierungen ignorieren" but now I have a shortcut on the homescreen right into that hidden menu. Great man. :good: Also thanks to Alanon for the hint with "More shortcuts" (from now on Ms).
After installing Ms, my wheater app 1weather suddenly was on that whitelist. But I remember that there was no option before installing Ms. Also after unticking the checkbox and deinstalling Ms, I could not see the "menu point" in the app viewer (or under the battery statistics) again. So it seems for me that Ms is a nice assistance for battery saving (and whitelisting) reasons.
I will know check, if the clock of 1weather (and besides: also of some other weather widgets except AccuWeather) keep in time. I will report soon.
Thank you so ****ing much Alanon! I thought that activity was still there (I have a LG X Power, and LG has also hidden that option at Battery Settings), I just needed to find some way to launch it. I've searched and used the ****ty app Activity Launcher but it hadn't showen me that activity, but now it worked like a charm with More Shorcuts. Thank you!

Apps force closing on newer Androids

Long thread and I'm sorry if this is not the right place to post this, if it isn't please feel free to point me in the right direction so that I can fix my mistake
I'm using a note 3 N9005 and I've been jumping from ROM to ROM to find the most stable and less buggy ROM I can to keep this as my main phone for a while. Even tho most Android 7 ROMs were pretty stable, I needed to use a newer version because of some apps that are only A-8/9+ compatible.
Unfortunately, for some unknown reason, whenever I use any A-8+ ROM some apps keep crashing for apparently no reason, some even almost crash instantly on start (mainly Uber and Pokemon GO). Since I've been trying to find the reason behind it for months I'm making this thread to see if someone can help me on this or even tell me if this is something fixable, Android/model related or if it is just my phone dying
Here is what I have so far:
Uber/Cornershop - It's usable but force closes sometimes when changing screens or "under heavy load", gets worse on A-10 and becomes unusable on A-11 (FC as soons as map/drivers start to show up).
Inter bank - FC same as Uber but at random, so it can or cannot work when you need it.
PicPay - Instant FC when opened on A-9+, doesn't even give a message.
Pokemon GO - On A-9 it starts ok but then it freezes and crashes at random times (specially when changing screens in-game) and gets progressively worse/more frequent over time. On A-10 and A-11 it gets to the point where when you login and assets are loading around you, it crashes. On A-8 it freezes/crashes while assets are loading, same as A-11 but happens since first boot so it's unplayable.
All of these, apart from PoGo, doesn't happen on A-7 ROMs, PoGo still has some crashes but it takes so long to happen that they almost don't bother me that much. I also noticed that, on PoGo, when I turn off location before the assets show up, it stays longer without freezing/crashing (gives me more time to do some things that don't need my immediate location in-game).
Things I tried so far to fix these problems:
Different based ROMS - AOSP, GZOSP, AOKP, CAF, AICP (CAF ROMs seemed more stable, at least on PoGo but it can just be a coincidence or placebo).
Kernel tweaking - Using virtual memory, over/under clocking CPU and GPU, tweaking hotplugs, using Lspeed.
Using lolz-kernel on A-9/11.
Changing a bunch of developer options including killing all apps as soons as you leave.
Updating adreno drivers (tried with 2 different versions I found here on XDA).
Trying different webviewers - bromite, mulch, chrome, chromium.
Unfortunately I don't have any logs of these crashes since I have no experience with logcat or any other log program, also I was jumping from ROM to ROM and it was kinda hard for me to do it, but if it's needed it and someone can guide me through the process I can try to provide those.
My current setup:
LineageOS 18.1 (official), default kernel and OpenGAppsBaseband and bootloader updated (UGPQB1/SGBQD1)No adreno driver custom updatesMagisk 26.1 root with zygisk on, modules:USNF v2.4.0 (mod by Displax)Shamiko v0.7.3(174)ViPER4AndroidFX repackagedhoch69 v2.7.2.1-v69-(dd44f54)L speed v1.7Bromite System WebView Overlay v0.4Lspeed tweaks:GPU Tuner - Render OpenGLES using the GPU, Optimize buffer and Force GPU RenderingNet tweaks - DNS Manager (cloudflare)RAM Manager - RAM Manager (Gaming), Virtual memory tweaks (Performance) and Swappiness tendency 25%Misc - DIsable debugging, Kernel panic and all animation scales at .5x

Important to mention that my battery temperature sensor is apparently broken/misbehaving, it shows a lower temperature than intended, dropping even more as soon as a cable is connected (sometimes it even says "too cold to charge" and refuses to charge). I suspect a hardware problem on the sensor and USB jack since both are apparently "together", but idk if this is related to the problem in question or not.
Bonus info:
I noticed that some apps like PoGo Chat have weird graphical issues on A-8+ which I'm gonna include some screenshots below, the screen just flickers like crazy and stays like that, tho they never happen on A-7 so I thought MAYBE it could mean something?

Presume you have no problems on Samsung based roms/firmware .
That rules out phone on the way out .

If I remember correctly I had no problems using Samsung based ROMs, unfortunately they only go up to Android 6 so they lack even more compatible apps than 7 which is a deal breaker for me :/ for instance I can't even test PoGo on those since it's only for A-7+
