Marshmallow - Missing functions (Doze/App Standby; System UI Tuner) - LG Spirit Questions & Answers

Hi all,
I finally updated my H440n via "LG PC Suite" from Android 5.0.1 (rooted) to Android 6 (which is quite nice and very fast in comparison to 5.0.1). Before I did that, I tried to inform me as good and much as possible.
Hence, there are several features/functions I was looking forward to, inter alia:
1) System UI Tuner (activated via long-pressing the Settings-Symbol in the Quick Settings Dropdown) --> Does not work
2) Doze/App Standby (should be in the Battery-Menu under a submenu; via the three dots in the right-up corner) --> The three dots are not there
In the general thread I believe to remember that, with respect to (1), LG was not implementing the System UI Tuner; so one would only find it in an AOSP ROM, correct?
As far as (2) is concerned, I'm a bit "shocked" not finding this option/menu. Besides the App Permission Management (without root) these two features/functions were a main reason in upgrading the firmware. Does anyone know if Doze is active without any "settings"? Regarding App-Standby I believe it is missing, as there is no settings menu, so the user is unable to exclude an app from this Standby; am I right? Or is there any way to activate it (e.g. via the - mainwhile activated - developers menu)? :fingers-crossed:
Thanks for any help. :good:
Kind regards,
Fazi
PS: Meanwhile I, again, use Greenify (as a replacement for App Standby).

Doze is enabled by default on all devices, if I remember correctly. While it might not show any options, It feels like it's definitely there when looking at the battery life. Also, I use Force Doze to send my phone into doze more often / faster than by default.

As far as I can recall, ForceDoze can enable the original MM feature and add some more settings. However, I've read somewhere that the reason why it's disabled is that LG has implemented their version of the doze function natively, like they integrated features of the Tuner to their own ecosystem. Something that basically suspends apps under certain circumstances. And battery management available for many apps unlocks the full potential for that behaviour. Personally, I've tested the ForceDoze and the untampered feature for LG, and LG is noticeably better. If I genuinely use my phone rarely, distributed in large blocks of time, I can extend battery life to up to three days. That tells me that there's definitely something under the hood, and that it works.

Thanks so far. I hoped that LG implemented it, only without showing any settings/menu.
On the contrary, since I use Android 6, my 1WeatherWidget is not refreshing the "clock" any more. After about half an hour it gets stuck. Just if I open the App via tapping the weather of that widget, the clock refreshes to the current time. The android clock and the alarm are luckily not affected. Could that be a failure of the LG-implemented doze?
In the general App-Menu, under the point "Battery Management" at any app installed so far, there is no settings-possiblity at all. This is why I was wondering, if LG really implemented anything (Doze/App Standby) in their MM ROM.
Besides, both of you didn't mention "App Standby", which would be a bit tricky by LG to implement without offering the user any kind of whitelist, right? :silly:
Thanks for the hint with force doze, which I already read a while ago here on XDA, but interpreted it wrong. I found this feature in Greenify too under "agressive doze". As I already use that app I will give it a try in Greenify in a few days (try to whitelist "1WeatherWidget") and keep you updated.
Thanks again.

I think LG took a different approach.
The screenshot above is from my battery usage app list. AquaMail has a setting to ignore battery optimization, and it works whenever I get an email, no matter the inactivity period. I've only found one other app that gave the option. (No weather app, btw. - if you find one, let me know!)
It seems that the app must provide some concrete setting in order for this doze exception to be functional. I have no idea if this is a Marshmallow thing, an LG quirk, or simply a case of a really good app developer, because the AquaMail development cycle is off the charts.
The option, if it exists, is only accessible from the battery view. The only way I've found to check is if you go to Apps, select an app, and then review its battery usage. Though this doesn't work if the app wasn't used in a while.
On a different note, it might be possible to access this battery menu if it was secreted away by LG. There are several such menus, like one for multi window management, that are actually present in the rom, just not functional on our device. Many can be accessed by some apps like More Shortcuts, that list all the calls of a given app, like Settings. Though it requires much more research...

Well I'll be. This was easier than I'd thought. You need to use a custom shortcut app like More shortcuts, and find the shown activity within the settings.
This is what you get:
WhatsApp and AquaMail were already checked. I presume this is the exclusion list. Checked my weather app in there, hopefully I 'll know by morning.

Thanks a lot for the guidance. I set system language on German (Austria) and needed some time to find it under "Optimierungen ignorieren" but now I have a shortcut on the homescreen right into that hidden menu. Great man. :good: Also thanks to Alanon for the hint with "More shortcuts" (from now on Ms).
After installing Ms, my wheater app 1weather suddenly was on that whitelist. But I remember that there was no option before installing Ms. Also after unticking the checkbox and deinstalling Ms, I could not see the "menu point" in the app viewer (or under the battery statistics) again. So it seems for me that Ms is a nice assistance for battery saving (and whitelisting) reasons.
I will know check, if the clock of 1weather (and besides: also of some other weather widgets except AccuWeather) keep in time. I will report soon.

Thank you so ****ing much Alanon! I thought that activity was still there (I have a LG X Power, and LG has also hidden that option at Battery Settings), I just needed to find some way to launch it. I've searched and used the ****ty app Activity Launcher but it hadn't showen me that activity, but now it worked like a charm with More Shorcuts. Thank you!

Inside Android 4.2: Notifications and quick settings

COURTESY OF ANDROIDCENTRAL!!
Now we have all waited to see the much anticipated quick settings be incoperated into android and now it is and i must say it looks amazing and overall a amazing feature androidcentral has brought us a quick preview before android 4.2 is released

Finally, Google has added quick settings to the notification pulldown in Android 4.2. That's a feature many have wanted in stock Android since, well, forever. Enthusiast ROMs have added them. The manufacturers have added them. You can download apps that add them. And now, Google's added them in the latest version of Jelly Bean.
Only, Google did it different. Whereas quick settings generally serve as toggles in the notification pulldown, Google's gone a different route. Crazy, or crazy like a fox? Let's take a look.
The gist is this: Pull down the notification bar, and you see your notifications, just like always. Only, where there used to be a Settings button is now ... something else. The icon shows a person, with five thumbnails below and to the right of it. It's actually a preview of what's to come.
Press that button, and the notifications section flips over to the quick settings. (And the icon in the top right of the screen switches from the quick settings icon back to a notification icon.) The settings listed are:
Your Google+ profile: If you're signed in to Google+, your name and profile picture will appear. Tap it, and you're asked if you want to view your Google+ profile. (Not sure why I'd ever want to get to my G+ profile that quickly, but chances are Google will tweak that at some point.)
Brightness: Tap this, and you get a little popup that lets you adjust the display brightness. This is different (and better) than the full-screen brightness notification. I use this a lot already.
Settings: Ah, there it is. A shortcut to the full settings menu.
Wifi: Shows the network you're own. Tap, and it takes you to the Wifi settings.
Mobile data: Shows which carrier you're on, and signal strength (in bars).
Battery: There's a visual indicator and percentage remaining. (Numbers FTW!) Tap and you get the battery section in the settings menu.
Airplane mode: Shuts off the radios for when you're on an airplane. (Or if you want to pretend you're on an airplane.)
Bluetooth: Takes you to the Bluetooth settings menu. (The quick setting will show on if on, off if off.)
One finger for notifications, two for settings
Here's the really cool part -- Google's given a way to quickly access the quick settings side for of the pulldown. Here's how it works.
Pull down from the top of the screen with one finger and you get the notifications area.
Pull down with two fingers and you immediately get the quick settings.
Presumably this will work just fine on all smartphones. (The worrier in us, however, is slightly concerned about strange touch panels behaving weirdly, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.) In practice, we got the hang on the two-finger swipe just fine, though we're not quite at 100 percent in practice. Most of the time it works, sometimes it doesn't. Chalk that up to prerelease software, perhaps, or (more likely) operator error.
Quick settings and tablets
Things are pretty much the same on tablets in Android 4.2. You have the same quick setting buttons -- with auto rotate swapped in here for the cellular connection button. (Presumably the mobile network button will remain on any tablet that has a data connection.)
The other difference for tablets is in how you access the notifications and quick settings pulldowns. You still drag from the top of the display (in either portrait or landscape orientation). But notifications are on the left, and quick settings are on the right. There's no one- or two-finger swiping. (And you can't full both down at the same time. We've 'shopped that picture for sake of example.)
It's not yet known if applications will be able to add items to the notification menu, or how they'd be able to do that without breaking the iconography. As of now, there's no way to add or remove settings.
Be that as it may, quick settings are a welcome addition in Android 4.2, and Google's implemented them in a smart manner.
We know?
Nice
Nearly wet myself when I read title as thought someone had ported this, wishful thinking on my part anyway thanks op.

Guide to disable Google play services "internal" services.

Bringing my experiences from G3 to Nexus 6.
With the mods to Google play services on my G3 I was able to increase my battery longevity by a significant amount. This thread is to guide and discuss as to which "services" could be disabled inside the Google play services app using "3Ctoolbox". Disabling certain services prevents Ggoogle play service from running in the background, thus, saving battery.
As a reminder, some of the services can still run after disabling them and even cause a large amount of wakelocks. To solve this, please disable the corresponding tasks in Activities, Providers, and Receivers. For example: disabling update.SystemUpdateService in the Services tab will not disable the service completely, so you must navigate to Receivers tab and disable everything that is related to it there.
Lastly, think ahead while disabling services. If you play games and use "games" app to sync them, then you should not disable anything that deals with games. Same applies to other services.
Update 5/30/15: Google play services version 7.5... here is the list of what services can be safely disabled. Perform at your own risk. I am not responsible for any damages.

If you're going to create a thread to discuss what changes can be made that are helpful and not harmful and have made such changes, would you mind discussing the changes you made in the thread you made for that purpose?
It's not quite a disabling of a service but all I've done with play services is disable location, keep awake, and wake up through app ops. No downsides that I've noticed yet.

well, if you are a ok google user, then there are downsides. if you disable location services, you wont get any info like "traffic home" or "traffic to work"(for example). if you dont use ok google, then disabling locations wont affect you to much.

The services that I have disabled are such things as ads, report services, and wearable services. There are other also, but I want to wait a few days before posting the final list so that other users don't have issues.

I didn't notice any. It could help by lowering the amount of RAM that is being used, but i think this would be in very extreme cases where all the RAM is used. With the way the phone is made, it has more than enough performance in stock form. Disabling services is primarily for battery longevity.

You need full root. Download the app suggested in the first post. Scroll left once you open it, find "application manager", make sure at the bottom it says" system", click on the "apps" on the top bar, scroll to Google play service and click open then details, next scroll right and select services from the top bar.
After doing that, GPS and location stopped working. It cannot stablish my location. Even after enabling all Location services, it still not working.
Restart the phone. None of the things that are disabled in my list will affect the GPS

LED Notification and AOD on/off programmatically?

Does anyone have any clue as to what activity or intent to send to turn on/off LED Notification and Always On Display on the S7 Edge?
I make extensive use of AutoMagic Premium (http://automagic4android.com) and Lightning Launcher Pro (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.pierrox.lightning_launcher_extreme) and their collective abilities allow me to automatically change home screens (like when I connect to the Bluetooth in my car) and start activities and such. I'd really prefer not to load yet another app to do these things but, instead, just send an intent that turns on or off LED Notification at the appropriate times and turn on/off AOD. I've been through the list of activities in quite a few apps including those in Settings and the Samsung apps (via Activity Launcher, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.szalkowski.activitylauncher, and a few other such apps) haven't found anything that will actually do the job.
I've tried searching for help but haven't found a good set of search terms that'll yield useful results -- everything directs me to Settings or a review of the S7 Edge and what AOD is or what color the LED flashes
For the LED, you can use Tasker with the Samsung LED controller plug in:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tinyroar.galaxys3ledcontroller
There are some other apps that support Tasker plug-ins, but I don't know if the ones you mention do or not.

Thanks, works great! Automagic works with Tasker plug-ins and Lightning Launcher can be driven by Tasker (and compatible) programs so I've set up a little task driven by time-of-day to automatically have LL display my Night home screen and turn off the notification LEDs. I've also set up another task that gets triggered when I long press the Back key on my Night home screen in LL that sets "Day" mode and turns the notification LEDs back on.
Samsung LED controller doesn't seem to affect Always On Display. Does anyone know of anything I can use to set/reset this without going to Settings? I'm using Good Lock and AOD isn't currently available in the quick settings.

I use Tasker to turn off AOD at night but you have to have the Secure Settings Plugin and to be able to access the setting for AOD you have to have the paid version.

I had completely forgotten about Secure Settings, thank you! The plugin works with Automagic, too.
I bought Tasker back when it first came out and used it then but Tasker's UI and lack of decent documentation finally got the better of me and I haven't used it nor any of the plugins i used/bought for it for a couple of years. Automagic has its own quirks but I guess I'm used to themm Maybe I should take another look at Tasker? Hmmm...
Anyway, thank you for the Secure Settings pointer! Work great and, with that, my quest is over. Well, almost Just wondering if anyone else has any other suggestions? Development seems to have stopped on Secure Settings and, while it does everything I need it to do, I'd like to have another option, just in case.
I have found that you can find some good Tasker solutions by searching on Reddit. I agree that there should be more documentation for Tasker.

There are good solutions on Reddit and there are a lot of good solutions here on XDA...there's even a Tasker Tips and Tricks forum at http://forum.xda-developers.com/u/tasker-tips-tricks! My problem is I just don't have the time anymore to do that much reading! Learning new container architectures and new language (GO, anyone?) and new (to me) delivery facilities (Chef, ANT) are taking up most of my time nowadays
Well, thanks to the pointers and apps given to me by the contributors to this thread, I've managed to accomplish everything with just Automagic! I'll document what I did in case anyone else is looking for a solution. I have no doubt that I could accomplish the same thing with Tasker but I'm using Automagic so that's what I'll document.
I can (un)set the system setting LED Indicator by using Automagic's "Set System Settings" action and manipulating 4 settings in the System category: led_indicator_missed_event, led_indicator_low_battery, ed_indicator_voice_recording, and led_indicator_charing (note, no "g" -- it's not charging, it's charing!).
I can (un)set Always On Display by using Automagic's "Set System Settings" action and manipulating a single setting in the System category: aod_mode.
Thanks, everyone, for your help!

Thanks for this. I hadn't found that option in Secure Settings. It would be nice if they listed all the options alphabetically, instead of randomly.
Tried to switch AOD on and off on my S7 using macrodroid and secure settings but the AOD doesn't turn on when I use 1 or off when I use 0.
Any help please?
Thank you!
EDIT: Ok, got it working now as described above!

lock screen security

so i have a joyin ul135. i realised that in the settings there is no option to turn on a lockscreen. simply put, my personal accounts are associated with this device for spotify, amazon, netflix etc, and i dont want anybody to have access to this when i drop it in to the mechanic etc.
does anyone have a recommendation (app recommendation), that they personally use to lock the screen/device that they find works really well with their joying headunit?
i would be interested in this as well.

I have tried Lock screen by Green Banana Studio and it works fine, sometimes it takes 5 sec for app to run after unit has booted up.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.green.banana.app.lockscreenpassword&hl=en
This one looks good too: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.next&hl=en
I find it easier just to freeze all those apps with Titanium backup and unfreeze later. Someone could unfreeze those but I doubt they'll go through the trouble.
Is there something more reliable. I used the AppLock - DoMobile and locked all apps before handing over to the garage.
But, when I received the car, I found that they have been watching the movies in my HU and the app was disabled.
Later, I found that, a simple press on the reset button or a battery disconnection will de-activate the app.
Any other suggestion will be appreciated.
I created a google account and switched to it in my HU after this.
I enabled security lockscreen this way (on unrooted Joying model): (pictures are from my Samsung phone just to represent the concept)

3. it automatically opens up list with all available activities on the device grouped by application or service;
4. scroll down to Settings group of activities and tap on it to open sub-list of Settings activities (there will be a lot);
5. scroll down there until you'll find something like Select screen lock activity. There could be several with the same name, so you need to check their system name (or whatever it is) below.
6. Tap it to select and place this shortcut to the desktop.
If you picked correct one it will open normal android settings menu for lockscreen.
I believe you may find any other app that work with activities in some more comfortable way and do the same thing (find corresponding Settings activity and get to the lockscreen setup).

Okay, I will try that.
Do you have an update? What did you end up doing to lock your head unit?
Iam looking for a solution too. I also foind the activity and I can launch it. I am also able to define a pin or pattern. Just the screen never locks.neither on turning off the screen nor on standby or reboot. Also I tried to use nova launcher but still I can't get the lock screen to show up even though I configured a lock pattern and the device tells me the pattern unlock is active.
I think my PX5 Android 6.0 ROM simply lacks the lock screen implementation itself. Also other screen locking apps do not work as the unit kills all apps on standby (imcluding other lock apps).
I would actually also like to add multiple users as this is supported in Android 6. But dragging down the status bar and tapping on the blue user icon does not launch any activity. I guess its simply not implemented.
As there is potentially an update with Android 8 upcoming soon I do not waste my time here. After the upgrade is released I will check agin. If the user management and lock is still missing we might check with custom rom developers how to fix/add this.
Workaround
I believe I've found a solution.
It involves using an app such as AppLock to lock all the required apps behind a PIN etc and then using an app such as Automateit to launch AppLock whenever the device boots.

[Tutorial][Tasker]Supercharge Your K8 with Tasker

What is Tasker?Tasker is an automation app for Android. The basic concept with Tasker is “if X happens, do Y,” where the ridiculous number of Xs and Ys available making it as complex as it is. An example of a relatively simple Tasker setup is “if the phone is put upside down while ringing, mute the sound,” but the sky is the limit for how complex something can be.
Why should I learn Tasker?Learning Tasker is guaranteed to revolutionize how you use your Android device. Tasker gives you the ability to custom tailor your device the way you want it, so that you’re not forced to use some lowest common denominator product. I personally have replaced a lot of actual apps with Tasker creations I have made myself, and custom made those to fit my exact needs.
Can anyone learn Tasker?Tasker shares some similarities with programming, but that’s by no means a prerequisite for learning it. Having an analytical mind that thrives on logical thinking will however help you a lot, and it doesn’t hurt if you’re creative either. The more experience you have with using software of any kind, the easier it will also be to use Tasker, because this is not an app that comes with a user manual, and so you have to be able to use common sense and just try to see what happens a lot of the time. Because of that, impatient people who expect everything to be handed to them should stay as far away from Tasker as possible.
For a head start, you can skip the learning curve, and just import the ready-made Tasker profiles that I have made for Lenovo K8 Note (Root not required).
Downloading & Setup Tasker, Importing things:Tasker gathers various information from all the sensors and os. So it need almost all the permissions of a device. That’s why I strongly recommend to download Taker from play store. A hacker may design a modified version of Tasker that can send sensitive private data over the internet (For example, Tasker can capture image with the front cam and send it to a remote location without any user interaction). Please check the functionality of a profile that isn’t created by you.
Setup: After downloading launch Tasker> Upper right corner menu> Preferences. In the UI tab disable Beginner Mode; in the MONITOR tab make sure Run in Foreground is checked. You can disable the notification icon by clearing ‘Show notification icon’. A permanent notification of Tasker will be on phone and this is important. Make sure any power saving feature/app like Greenify is not blocking Tasker from running in background.
Now go back from preferences> Menu> More>Android Settings> Enable all the permissions there.
Importing things: Tasker has four tabs on main screen: PROFILES, TASKS, SCENES, VARIABLES. A Profile is a condition (the ‘X’) with linked Task (the ‘Y’). A Task (which is normally linked with a Profile) is the action which will be performed by tasker if the condition of the linked Profile is met.
I’ll upload all the Profiles, Tasks required to achieve a functionality in zip file. De-compress/extract the zip file in a known location> Click on respective tab on Tasker> Import> point to the location of extracted files.
Get-Started:Bluetooth Auto Off:
Tasker will show a notification (With a button to disable Bluetooth) if Bluetooth is on for 5 min and no device is connected.

Get a List of Players when Headset is Connected:
You will get a list of pre-configured apps to launch quickly whenever you connect a headset in 3.5 mm jack and it will set media volume to 11 (in a scale of 15). This profile needs manual configuration: you can add/remove apps to the list. Go to Tasks> Headphone Connect> Menu> Items to modify the list.

Add the missing Sound profile and Google sync toggle to Quick tiles
Tasker provides three custom quick tile toggles. Import the three tasks in Tasker. Then go to Menu> Preferences> Action> Configure the Quick Settings tasks as shown:
Now Edit your quick tiles and drag the first two Tasker tiles into visible tiles list:

I will update this thread with some other advance Tasker profiles (caller name announcement, app lock with pin etc).
Do share if you use any other Tasker Profiles.

This was much needed. Thanks!
BTW, does Tasker effect battery life in a negative way?

Click to collapse
It depends on the tasks you are performing. For example if you configure a task that need to monitor your location continuously, then obviously it should drain battery. But for the profiles I have uploaded here, you'll never see tasker on the settings>battery.
