Could a faulty battery be causing these issues? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I dropped my phone a bit ago and had to replace the screen. I also damaged the battery when I removed it so bought a supposedly genuine one.
The replacement battery doesn't charge right. It will say it's fully charged when the phone is switched off but when I turn the phone on it could be anywhere from 50%-100% charged.
Recently my phone has started turning itself off randomly. It doesn't power down. Just goes from on to off.
And then today it's been constantly asking me to re-enter my sim pin. But the phone isn't resetting before this happens.
I've tried a couple of different ROMS and they both do this.
Strangely if I go into recovery the phone NEVER turns off.
Could a dodgy battery cause these problems? Or is it a hardware problem?

I thought of that. I'll give it a shot.

Tried with stock 4.4.4 and I can't even unlock my sim card now. I put in my pin number and it just goes back to asking for it again. A message flashes for a split second that I can't fully make out but I know it says "failed" at the end. Hmmmm, I'm thinking it's a hardware issue. New battery is coming tomorrow so I'll see if it is that.

Got my new battery today and my phone is now working. Who'd have thought a dodgy battery would cause such weird issues?

Congratulations

WIZ don`t power up

I though my battery died so I bought new one, but it doesn`t respond also.
On friday there was problem with display and device automaticaly restarted
I opened it and something like this is not connected anywhere. I can`t see anything in service manual like that. Do you know what is it and where it suppose to be connected ?
That's a holder for the stylus.
There's a small screw that goes through it when it's in place and it holds the stylus from falling. It's very easy to place it back!

Ok, thanks, so it`s not for battery so my wizard is dead definitely
It may not be your battery!
I had my wizard die in much the same manner as your's. I thought it was a gonner until I ran across a site somewhere with a whole group of people with the same problem with their wizard. I'm only guessing, but I think you let your battery run very low and the device shut down, which is alright, until you consider that it cannot charge without the operating system (Windows)
up and running! I had to cut the mini end of a usb to mini usb cable, strip the black and red wires and hold the black to the negative pole of the battery and the red to the positive pole while it was plugged into the usb port on the desktop computer for about 20-30 seconds. Then replaced the battery in the phone, booted windows and recharged with the home charger. It worked great, but now I carry a fully charged battery with me, in case it happens again and I,m out somewhere where I can't jump start the battery with the cable trick. I think this method is also mentioned somwhere on this site. Good luck and let me know if it works.......
Oh. I also though it is the problem with charging, but the night before my battery was fully loaded and in the morning the phone died without possibility to boot up. two days later I`ve buy the new battery and put into the Wiz...nothing.
I asked salesmen if it`s possible that the new battery is charged under possibility of the phone, but he said it`s definitely not. So I suspect that something happened to the hardware.
I`ve tried connecting USB directly to the battery also, before I buing new one, but it also didn`t worked for me.
Before it completely died there was several hangups on today screen and once even on the booting splash screen, with the strange situation where the radio ROM was not displayed at all :/ ??
After this several reboot sesions it has not started again.
I didn't catch the whole story from the beginning, but did you drop the Wiz? I dropped mine, and I am going through the same exact thing with the Radio not showing up. Mine only gets to the first splash screen, and enters an endless reboot loop.
If we can find a solution to this problem, I'd DEFINITELY love it. Until then, I'll still be sad.

Hi there,
As you can see I'm very new to this forum but I too have just come across this problem this morning.
My battery was fully charged yesterday and I had my alarm set to wake me up this morning but it did not go off. I checked and it was all set ok so I did a soft reboot. It hasn't come on since. A took out the battery for a while and it managed to boot up to the WM6 screen but then switched off.
Now it seems the device doesnt even switch on
IPL/SPL 2.22.002 (I think from memory)
OS 6.0xxx
Running the TNT rom not sure what version (was ebayed)
Have you plugged it in through the wall, and not the PC? Somehow mine came back to life this morning, all I did was plug it into the wall AC power WITHOUT a SIM card, and it booted like normal first try.

Hi Chris,
Please eleborate/clarify your OP, because I don't think anyone gets this... At least i don't! You say the screen doesn't turn on but the phone boots?! How do you figure that? Your device is actually on because you can receive/answer calls!?! :S
Sounds like your device has just BSOD (Black Screen of Death) which is discussed quite a lot here. Just press reset button or pull the battery (please tell me you have tried that before...).
If your device IS NOT powered on, please try this:
Does the device vibrate shortly when pressing the End-button? If so you should leave it connected to the charger for longer. If battery has drained too much it takes a while for the device to allow it to power itself up (prevention of overdrainage, which Lithium-batteries don't like very much).
Do you charge through USB, or with the supplied charger? I've had this before trying to charge it with a (different brand) microUSB charger. Turned out most chargers only give out 500mAh, whilst my normal charger (and car-charger) give out 1000mAh i believe. That might help.
You can order a cheap replacement battery from China (i got mine with dockingstation), which is already charged about 60% (for storage purposes).
BTW if your problem is fixed, please add the prefix [FIXED] or [SOLVED] to your topics title.

i have restarted many times.
i use the wall charger.
but why would the phone boot but not turn on the screen or have the mic work?
remove your sd card and the battery. you may have to hit the rest button on the back after you plug the battery back in as well, but as long as you have the sd card out it should come back on. try plugging the phone into a charger and then remove the battery as well sometimes it'll wake it up so to speak. it's just a matter of playing with it. mine did the exact same thing and i freaked out for a little bit.
now if after all this it doesn't work and you've played with it for a while then yeah, best of luck to you =\. but whatever you do in playing with the battery and the charger, keep the sd card out until you can boot into winmo.
EDIT: never mind, i thought the phone wasn't booting. i misunderstood, but i went back and reread the original post. try reflashing your rom if you're in winmo and experiencing those issues. or take the sd card out and reboot.
i would suggest making an backup, as your phone turns on you should be able to estaplish a remote-connection with some (3rd-party-)software and do a hardreset.
if this wont work i would recommend setting it back to factory default (revert hspl if you have one and install stock rom) and send it in for warranty.
seems to be some major problem...
All this steps should be possible without screen turning on (working touchscreen may be needed for backup, but flashing doent need screen input)
if drive-mode is default for your usb connection and holding you from flashing you can do a hardreset and afterwards active sync will be default again and you can establish an active sync connection and flash
check if any of the pins that contact the battery are bended or broken, try to avoid removing the battery when you have to reset your hd2 because the pins are fragile
similar thing happened to me just last night!
I tried the jmz dual boot last night and I was nearly out of battery. I didnt look at any instructions I just installed it and restarted the phone to check out the new toy. it finally got done loading I chose android right away and I was walking towards the bedroom. when I went to see if android had fully booted and plug in the phone I had nothing! It was off. I decided that the battery must have died so I tried to turn it on and all that happened was the tmobile flash screen came up for a second and then it went right off, I got so desperate that I was going to do a hard reset but that wouldnt even work! the boot loader screen would just shut right off. I was suggested to try another battery we had at the house and bang it fired right up I took a wiff of my other battery and I dont know what happened but I think I let the magic smoke out cuz it is fried!

hello friend...i have a problem similar to this. basically when my phone is in android which i use alot if it dies in android, when i reboot it it will turn on for about a second to see my splash screen then turn itself off (the battery is obviously flat). so i plug my charger in and it stays on now but doesnt indicate charging....i boot it into windows mobile and the batt just stays at 0% but its still working. however once i unplug it it will die.....its like the battery is not in the phone. luckily i have two batteries and a dock which charges batteries, so i replaced the battery and everything works fine. once the battery that died in android was fully charged i tried it again and it was fine.................im guesing the moral to this story is dont let your phone die in android mode
I do notice my HD2 runs hotter while in android than while it runs in Windows.
I am not sure if that's an issue to this, which is why I never mentioned about it being hotter. Although my HD2 is noticeable hotter, it never gets to a point that I think I should unplug the USB due to overheating concern...
Just a few inputs from passed experience
I use TMOUS Stock 2.13.531.1 WWE ROM
2.12.50.2_2 radio (not stock)
k going to tmobile today to see if they have any extra batteries i can try.
then ill update
i went to tmobile. and while i was there i noticed the screen was turning on but very dim without backlight (barely noticable). but the rep helping me did not notice and i let it stay that way because tmobile is sending me a new refurbished phone as long as i send the old one (and the rep was totally cool he uses xda also and said they wont check my software and if they do they wont ask for the phone back). he also let me get insurance in case this happens again, instead i will just say its lost. so i basically killed 2 birds with one stone

[Q] Mytouch 4g randomly turns off, wont turn back on until the battery is pulled out

I have had three Mytouch 4gs replaced because every one of them I get turns itself off and wont turn back on until the battery is pulled out and put back in. This happens about 6 times a day.
I have tried a new SIM card, new sd card, new battery, factory reset, factory reset with a format of the sd, and they still turned off even without any apps installed and not signed into google.
I am baffled. Does anyone here know what could be wrong here?
i dont know why this has happened to you so many times but it happened to me this morning and immediately after the battery was pulled and reinserted i went to rom manager and fixed permissions. took a while to finish cause i have buku apps but hasnt happened since.
hope it helps ya!
I was running completely stock when this happened, but I've since upgraded to virtuous fusion. Is it better to boot into recovery using CWM to fix permissions or am I fine doing this from the app?
Well I fixed permissions through CWM and it just turned off on me again. Ugh. I'm guessing its not a problem with the rom but with my hardware. Should I try flashing the latest radio?
Does anyone else here have this problem? Wtf is going on?
idk if its the same problem you're having but mine has recently started turning the screen off, the buttons still turn on as well as the led blinking if i have a notification but the screen wont come back on until i do a battery pull
so i'm also wondering what the problem is, fyi i'm using the kernel that came with cm7 and the latest radio
Hmm not sure. When my screen wont turn on I get no lights at all.
One of the causes can be the battery going bad.
I had the same issue until they sent me a new battery.

I have tried many different batteries with no effect.
I have noticed however that if it goes unresponsive and I plug it in the charging light comes on and I am able to boot the phone. It will turn off rather quickly though. Like in 20 minutes as opposed to 2 hours. Very weird.
Wow has anyone found a solution for this Problem? I can go into recovery and flash roms with no problem but as soon as it boots to the home screen its just automatically shuts off. Only twice have I gotten it to actually stay on for an hour or so. Also while charging it flashes green then orange, I have two different batteries, any ideas?
Well mine is the same it started after a small six to eight inch drop on the floor and it randomly freezes and when i boot it up just goes into boot loader and after a while of it being off it will go into OS any ideas anybody I am thinking it has something to do with bad chip but what do i know lol tel me know if anybody finds anything out thanks in advance
I've begun encountering the same problem after flashing MIUI 2.3.30 ROM. And I've also noticed that my phone started to get hot. It never did this before. I know my battery is fine, I also re-calibrated my battery and everything. I am even also thinking that for some reason my phone is bricked. It holds charge for about 10 minutes before it dies, even on the new battery, which I have tested on another MT4G and works perfectly. The other phone is my nephews. I wonder if this has to do anything with the bad EMMC chip?
Any input for solving this will greatly help.

You might have already looked at this but have seen in some other roms I have been working with is to make sure to check the md5 sum before flashing just because it flashed doesent
mean it was right it takes is slight hickup in a download and a bit of garbage where it don't belong. Better to check it do the full wipes even a couple times or maybe even mounting and format the boot n system partitions so if on a particular rom ask in its section.
Hope that helps, wish ya well
I would agree with the above post making a clean wipe, and even the format does help. I have been trying out almost all of the newest ICS roms avaliable and I notice it helps when wiping everything/format system and boot. Even the newer ICS rom Awesomev2.1 suggest doing so for the system partition.
As others have stated, you might not have performed a FULL wipe.
Reflash, but do the wipe (I did also wipe battery stats..seemed to help in my case)
Random restarts and won't load
Had the same issue when I switched to Virtuous Unity... battery wouldn't hold a charge and would randomly restart.
After basically nuking my phone (full wipe, cache/battery wipes, etc.), as well as installing Creamed Glacier, the battery life is better but the random restarts are not. Plugging the phone in is the only way to keep it from restarting constantly, where it will load the T-Mobile splash screen but turn off either immediately after or as the home screen loads. But the battery is always at least 50% when I plug it in and it stays on. It also seems to take forever to recharge (plugged into laptop).
I want to think it's a battery issue, but the fact that it's not dead when I plug it in makes me think it's a hardware issue. I can't send it in to T-Mobile (shipping charges and time would be huge, as I'm in a foreign country and I rely on it so much for communication), and I'm loathe to buy a new phone.
Anyone have any ideas?

I really hate to be redundant, but you formatted /system and data? System gets missed a lot and you didn't specifically mention it.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA
I have had the same problem with ics zips 4.01 all of a sudden the phone stops responding to the power button and have to take out the battery and boot up the phone but as of yesterday with the 4.02 I have had the problem. I don't know if it due to the heat cause where I live it hot and its just the beginning of summer too?

Phone died then came back to life

I wonder what the hell happened to my phone this morning, I thought it was dead. This morning at 4am, I pressed the home button, the clock and date were there as usual on the lockscreen. But there was no lockscreen, just a completely black background. I tried swiping it, nothing. Pressed the power button and the phone became completely dead, nothing happening, couldn't even get the time and date back. Connected to mains charger, nothing, no icon. Left it overnight till just now. Pressed power button, nothing. Connected to USB, nothing. Took battery cover off, removed sim card ready to put back in my old phone. Removed battery which was firmly in and then put battery back in after a few seconds. Everything fired up fine and it said 100% battery charge since obviously charging overnight.
Something up with the battery connection? It's not like the battery was loose in the compartment, it was slotted in as it should be as far as I could tell since I installed it when the phone was new 2 weeks ago. Yet removing the battery and putting it back seemed to cure the issue.
Seems it was a crash my phone experienced. Normal to have crashes or faulty phone? Only have launcher pro installed, no rooting, no drops, knocks or shocks to the phone.
Strange problem you had. I've had several crashes already, but all the ones that involved the phone itself crashing resulted in automatic reboots. I have a lot of stuff installed, but most of the time it's a game that'll crash it.
you could have solved this problem much earlier honestly.
in such cases it is very common to first take out the battery, wait a while and reinsert it. would have brought you the same solution in probably 10 minutes

Interesting Boot-Up Issue - Please Help!!! I Don't Know What Else To Try!!!

Everyone, please help me. I don't know what else to do. I am desperate here!!!
So, I've had my Galaxy Note 4 since the day they came out (October 24th, 2014), and I baby my phone.
Anyway, I've never dropped it, got it wet - nothing.
Last week, out of nowhere (I don't recall downloading anything out of the ordinary), my phone started getting extremely sluggish. I wiped the cache partition, but that didn't solve my issues.
Then, the phone was shutting down (abruptly, not powering down) out of nowhere. So, I pulled the battery, and did so many other recommended things.
Now, I cannot turn on my phone without first pulling the battery. Every so often, the phone shuts down (abruptly) and I have to pull the battery to start it up again.
I've changed batteries to back to my original battery, but that didn't help.
Then, every so often a screen comes on with the Android character saying, "Downloading. Do Not Turn Off Target !!"
Please help me!!! What can I do? What should I do?
I love this phone and it's gonna be a long time before the Galaxy Note 8 comes out!

Could be a faulty battery because the symptoms sounds similar to mine.
What happened to me was :
Phone would shut down randomly and would only switch on when plugged and charging.
Phone would shut down randomly and would only switch on after pulling out the battery.
Phone would randomly reboot.
Phone would discharge at a very quick pace. 20% for 5-20 minutes of usage.
Phone would only switch on when plugged into a power source but would bootloop when unplugged, even at 100%.
I managed to remedy the situation by buying a new battery. Although you did mentioned that you replaced it with the original battery, I suspect that there might be some sort of batch issue or something when it comes to the Note 4 battery. This current battery that I'm using is the third battery I bought for my Note 4 (because Samsung did not honour their warranty) and the only one that did not came from a Samsung authorised dealer and so far the issues seems to be gone. My phone stopped shutting down randomly and now I'm able to get 4 hour SOT with 12 hours of battery. Not that I'm suggesting you to get a fake battery but it's worth a try to see that it's not a motherboard issue.
My first two battery that came from Samsung and an authorised dealer both had issues within one year respectively and if you bring it to Samsung they will claim it's a motherboard issue and will charge you a few hundreds for a replacement so a new battery is worth a try.
So, I replaced my OEM battery with an Anker battery over a year ago. When this issue started, I put the OEM battery back in. The same issues occurred and the battery drained faster, so I put the Anker one back in.
Did adding a new battery fix your issues? It seems like you might have had the same issues as me.
Did that boot screen with the big Android guy come up on your phone as well?
Did you do a factory reset upon loading the new battery in?
I really love this phone, as you do, and I really want it to work and last!

Hi there,
I had exact the same problems. I think it is your flashmemory that is causing the problem. When the phone suddenly reboots into downloadmode you normally will see an error message in red saying "emmc read failure". This is your flashmemory. I ordered a new motherboard via alieexpress and replaced it myself, which is not difficult. You can find tutorial on youtube.
My phone is working perfect now.

Same issue here, started over a week ago, I have tried so many things, no results, you can't do anything, just gotta change the motherboard.
Same issues for me also. I replaced the battery, with no positive effect. The only thing to help is installing the app wake lock. Phone now works, but this does not solve the poor ram handling.
