Hello guys
Just picked up a LG G2 (Verizon variant VS980 according to the branded back and thicker size), but the LCD is dark. I did notice right away that the LCD must have been replaced as it doesn't have any Verizon branding in the top right corner (as the retail version has). The phone is fully functional, turns on, boot sound, beeping when volume is pressed, able to receive calls, and responds to touch (like able to answer by blind swiping, pull down notification and feel responsiveness when top toggles are pressed) but all with dark screen. I can see the backlight is good (some slight leakage) but not a single pixels lights up.
The previous owner told me the screen needs to be replaced, but didn't mention why. I assume he replaced it (or paid someone) with a GSM (D802/D800) variant and something must be different/not compatible. I thought the only difference was the wireless charging and CDMA board. I am wandering if there are any "easy" ways of solving this without purchasing the correct part (like possible modifying or replacing the connectors, or maybe flashing something?) Is there any chance that one of the ports/connectors is broken (and not the LCD itself?) Are there aftermarket LCD screens for Verizon variant that don't have the Verizon branding (thinking maybe it's a correct part, but defective) or all VS980 models come branded? I am just surprised that the wrong screen "fitted" so well. I am sure this was probably mentioned somewhere, I couldn't find a post with anything after search. Thanks for any feedback/input you can provide.
You bought a phone someone else fixed themselves. If you can fix it, open it and see how he did the repair & redo the job.
If not, you'll have to get it replaced professionally. LG won't warranty replace the screen since its obvious its been opened...

Well, not sure exactly what happened, but somehow the LCD screen of my phone cracked today and stopped working. It couldn't have been from an impact, as the front glass is still intact, the digitizer still works, and I don't remember any major impacts the phone had in the hour it was in my pocket before I noticed it wasn't working.
In any case, I just had a few questions:
1) Are all the screens for the GSM/CDMA versions of the Touch the same? I've found some listings on ebay for Dopod S1, XV6900, P3450, and other screens. Will any of these work?
2) If it's an extra $2 for an ebay auction with a digitizer and a screen, should I just buy that instead for the backup digitizer?
3) Does anyone have a spare Touch lying around with a working screen, or even just the screen itself. I'd rather not wait 3 weeks for it to arrive from China.
4) Is there any way to get the ESN off the phone using ADB or anything so I could clone it onto a spare phone I have in the meantime?
Thanks!

1. There are various models of the Vogue and Elf. The drivers are different between some of them and wouldn't work, so you have to make sure that you are getting the correct one.
2. Might as well
3. I do, but referring back to Q1, what version of the Vogue do you have (Bell, Verizon, Sprint, etc)? The one that I have is a Verizon Vogue with a broken power button. The thing works and needs the power button to be soldered back to the main board and a new case since the power button (the plastic part on the body) is broken. If you can get me $10 + shipping I will gladly let it go.
4. Yes there is, but discussion of this topic is not allowed on XDA as it is an illegal practice in most countries.
Hope this helps.

It's a Bell unit. In my huge amount of reading this morning I read something about how the android kernel's autodetect the screen in use and use the correct driver? If your unit would work I'd def want it!
Thanks for your help!
I was tapping out a text when all of a sudden the screen went black. the capacitive buttons still light up, but absolutely nothing from the display..
I'm kind of at a loss for what could have happened. the flex cable looks good and where it should be and doesn't appear to be loose...
Oh, and the digitizer still works because I can go through the motions of the lock screen and the phone vibrates.
open it up and make sure the connections on the flex are good, might need new flex cable and/or lcd
I tried to file a claim through Asurion and they said it wasn't covered! Kind of baffled at that. So I went in to my local Tmo store... renewed my contract, but made my bill $10 cheaper a month, and they were able to do a warranty replacement and I'm getting a MyTouch 4G Slide
Same thing just happened to me, I left the keyboard open for 10 minutes and when I came back it had a black screen (not off just black) can't get it to work. Im gonna try to take it apart and reconnect the flex cable. Ill let you know if it works.
G2 Black Screen
Hey, did anybody find a solution to this? I bought this T -Mobile G2 used so I have no type of warranty. The screen stays dark, but vibrations, ring tone, and the lights behind the"home& menu screen at the bottom work. I replaced the screen/digitizer but this did not fix it. still the same. what else might be wrong?

okay well I just found out that LCD screen replacement part and screen digitizer part are different. so I have purchased LCD screen. Will update whether or not this works as it seems through my internet searching many people have had this prob with the G2.
I have the same problem, black screen, touchscreen works because I can feel the feedback when I unlock. I've also done lcd replacement. That didn't help either. The only way I can get the phone to wake up is by squeezing the top left corner in the area by the proximity sensor, and the power button at same time. Doing that it takes me like 10 tries to get it to wake.
well you probably either didnt get a good connection at one of the cable points when you replaced the lcd (open it back up and check this) or you need to replace the entire flex cable
This happened to my sister's Desire Z (except she dropped it). Screen was black but phone was working. I reseated the LCD flex cables but that didn't fix the problem so I replaced the LCD module thinking it was dead. The screen was still black so out of desperation and anger I gave it a hard smack and it started working. It has been working for three months now. Go figure
Original LCD was probably good and the issue was probably due to a faulty flex cable, however on the DZ these cables are pretty complex and expensive (costs more that the LCD module)
After my AT&T Samsung Galaxy S4 screen cracked I figured that buying a new screen on eBay was the best course of action to take to fix the phone. While browsing for the best screen I came across a cheap listing of a Samsung Galaxy S4 already assembled screen (apparently the unit was DOA but the screen worked). Naively I thought buying this listing would be most convienent: all I had to do was switch out the internals and I would have a working phone and screen without having to take out the hairdryer.
It turns out, however, that I mistakenly bought the SGH-I720 model. There are several differences between the I720 model and the I1337 model. The external loud speaker from AT&T, for example, does not fit the I720 model. The digitizer touch component (located to the left of the battery) is constructed differently. The back casing (the plastic mold covering the internals) will not fit on the I720 model because of this digitzer component. Oh, and apparently I do not get any GSM service from my AT&T carrier.
The rest of the phone works perfectly though. Wifi, bluetooth, the camera -- etc. Everything else that was transfered over with the main motherboard works.
I suspect it's an antenna issue. Obviously, right? I do get some service though! I just have limited GSM connectivity. Is this because of a carrier lock? The key difference between the I720 and the I1337 is the bottom part of the phones (underneath the loud speaker). It appears that the I720 model has two antennas whereas my I1337 phone only has one. I'm assuming the I720 is capable of GSM connectivity (it says so on the product page) and therefore believe that the GSM antenna (on the right of the battery) should work. I also believe that it is properly working. Why else would I have signal (albeit weaker than I'd typically expect -- but that could be because I haven't fully constructed the phone and the case isn't on etc, etc.
So my question is: does anyone know how the carrier lock works? Does Sprint have it hardwired in the phone or is it purely software? If it is a software thing than I shouldn't have an issue -- I do, after all, have an AT&T phone in a Sprint body. Does anyone here with better technical expertise know why the bottom half of an I720 phone is simply incompatible with a motherboard from I1337? For testing purposes I connected the antenna from the motherboard in the I720 to the bottom half of the broken I1337 phone. I still get service but again -- limited connectivity and emergency calls only.
Any help? I'm thinking I should just cut my losses and buy a new screen and just manually replace the screen on the I1337 but I'm sitting on a working front end to a I720 and I really really want to make this work.
EDIT: I realize that it's L720 and not I720. Oops.
But here's an update: I moved back the motherboard from the L720 to the I1337 (where it came from originally). I just plugged in the screen from the L720 so that I could see what was going on (the I1337 screen is flat out broken). TURNS OUT that I don't get service period from the I1337 model! Which hopefully means that a) I'm not connecting something right or b) it's a really simple software issue that you guys know how to fix?
I did try calling 911 and I did hear a voice on the other side very briefly. I immediately hung up. So I have a feeling that my phone is connected to a network but isn't being properly recognized. Is there an emergency number that I could call to test my phone (that's obviously not 911)? I just want to hear a reocrded message or something that gives me a set of instructions...
You cannot use the L720 for any network other than Sprint in the USA. You have to call Sprint to unlock it internationally and then enter a gsm sim while out of the country and only then can you use it. There are several threads that explain all of this already. Just a suggestion but don't call 911 and hang up.

Dude, I'm confused... You have an L720 logic board inside of an I337 body or is it the other way around?
Sorry for the confusion. I have the logicboard of an I1337 (AT&T) inside of the body of L720 (Sprint). The only Sprint components of the phone are the body, the LCD / digitizer, and the small electronic board found towards the bottom of the device (one end of the antenna is connected here . . . the other end on the logic board). See my attachment to get an idea of what I'm talking about when I say "bottom of the device."
Regarding using the L720 in the US with other networks: I understand that the L720 is locked to the Sprint network. However, I have an AT&T (I1337) logic board. Where does the lock come into play? If the lock is software based... it shouldn't be an issue. If the lock is hardware based but isolated on the logic board... it shouldn't be an issue.
same issue
Any luck resolving this issue?
Ok, so first thing's first. I've been researching this for a few days now before creating this post. The touchscreen issues I'm finding online, are similar to what I'm experiencing, but the solutions have already been done, or my phone is not responding to them. I'm making this thread to see if anyone else has experienced the same issues or has any new news before I a) return my phone to stock, b) replace the digitizer, or c) buy a new one or upgrade to the G3.
My G2 was rooted, but kept on stock ROM with only small tweaks here and there. After the latest update, I noticed my work G2 had much better reception, so I returned my phone to stock to download the update. After updating, I re-rooted the phone, this time, the only thing I changed was the keyboard which I replaced with the G3 keyboard. Everything was fine for months until about a month ago.
It started with not being able to pull down the notification shade on the right half. No biggie, but after a week or so, it got worse. While using instagram, I noticed that the confirm button was sporadically responsive. Sometimes it worked fine, other times it didn't work at all. It began to progressively get worse on an almost daily basis. I decided to see what was going on and enabled both input options in the developer options menu. I found that the entire right side, about 1/8" was not responding to touch, the area not covered by glass screen protector( i removed it later while trying to troubleshoot). The upper right area showed about a half inch block that wasn't responding (the area where the data ribbon is). I was ok with that as instagram was really the only thing I used being affected.
About a week ago, the mid left screen area started being errratic. It began to get worse and started to affect the front touch screen buttons ( the area where the other data ribbon is). I enabled the input options again and saw that I now had a good portion of my left side of the screen was unresponsive. Even though I didn't drop it, I thought maybe the data ribbons had come loose as those 2 areas are where they are. I opened and disassembled the phone and re-sat the connctions after inspecting them. I double-checked all the other connections and LDIs in case humidity was the culprit. Everything looked good. Didn't fix the problem.
I've had to set my phone to unlock by facial recognition to ensure I don't get locked out, and changed my pin to use numbers not affected. I'm going to replace the digitizer, but wanted to see if anyone else had the same issue, or knew if it was, indeed, a software issue before I spend $75 (I will be replacing the digitizer and LCD to get it working sooner rather than risk damaging the LCD while replacing the digitizer and having to wait another week). I don't want to send it in to LG because I bought it on ebay and have no proof of purchase for warranty, and I want it working sooner.
One thing I noticed that may help with diagnosing, the screen now looks different when off. Before, in direct sunlight, you could see the dotted matrix from the digitizer, and that was it. Now, I can see the retangular pattern across the entire screen. I checked my work G2 which I just received a few months ago and the rectangular pattern is only visible on the edges of the screen, the center is black with only the dotted matrix visible. Keep in mind, this is in direct sunlight. In shade, the rectangles are visible on both.
I'm hoping it's a software issue, but I'm wondering if the digitizer is starting to separate from the LCD. I don't see any acutal separation though.
Thanks for reading the book, and for any feedback. Also, because it will probably come up, I want to avoid upgrading if I can because the G3 is just a little too big.
I restored the phone to stock with the most up to date software. Still doesn't work. It appears to be a hardware issue. I really thought it was software because the dead spots word for a split second after turning on the phone. Oh well. Guess I'm going to order a new digitizer or LCD combo.
Hi, the problem started a few weeks ago, when i low down the brightness the screen starts to flicker and it turns to a green/yellowish color, a few days after i woke up and turned my phone but it was black (i leave the phone charging every night before go to bed) when i turn it on by power or home button i just see a few horizontal lines in the upper part of the screen, but it wont turn on, so i got to remove the battery wait a while, then put it back and turn it on again, the screen still black for a while (i cannot see anymore the S5 logo) leave it for a moment, then after few pushes (well a lot actually) to the power button it turns on again and works just fine for the whole day, I've change the android last year to 6.0.1 with odin (I'm not from usa), and changed the battery a couple of months ago, what could it be the problem? battery? dying screen?

I had a similar problem with my S5 a while ago.
The screen used to have these so-called snowstorms and kept glitching and freezing. When I turned the screen off and on again it would stay black, then the phone would reboot and I would have that snowstorm again.
I then replaced the screen and after doing so the phone worked flawlessly (hurrah!) for about 3 months (damn). Then it started acting up again (sh**).
I was really disappointed. What a waste of money. What a waste of time.
Then I thought about the motherboard - that had to be the cause I thought.
So then I replaced that. This was about 2 weeks ago.
Ever since my S5 has been chugging along nicely.
So yeah, in the end it could be the following things causing the problem:
-loose screen ribbon connector
-faulty screen
-faulty motherboard
The S5's screen (flickering) is a commonly found problem.
If you want to spend your hard-earned money on a five-year-old phone like I did then here's more details:
The screen is fairly easy to replace. If you want to replace the motherboard you have to disassemble the entire phone. It shouldn't be difficult after you've removed the screen without breaking it.
I managed not to do so. Here's a video of the tear down process which should help you (quite a lot): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZ_rMo-AdKE&t=191s
If I were you I'd try replacing the motherboard first as it's cheaper. Don't make the mistake of doing it the other way round like I did.
Just search for the model number you want. SM-G900F (Europe and America) has the best support here on XDA and is the most common model.
I wouldn't order a G900A because as far as I know the bootloader is locked down because US carriers don't like us. And I don't think there's an exploit either.
If you want to buy a new screen then make sure you get a genuine one, follow the link or search "S5 digitizer" on eBay: https://bit.ly/2Hww3Dp
The seller I bought the screen from (from China, shipped from Netherlands) isn't selling it anymore so I cannot guarantee any genuineness or functionality. Seller looks reputable though and the pics and description look good and it ships to Europe.
Again, the screen is very expensive, even for an old phone like this! I would try replacing the motherboard first.
Any cheap screens (under 50) you find will most likely be of bad quality. You should not buy them.

Thanks for your reply, i think it will be better to get a new phone then, where i live (f**** argentina) the screen cost more than what i paid for the phone (used but just a few months after release) more than 100 dollars, thanks again.
