I'm getting to pilot having a Galaxy S5 for work since they're finally going to allow a choice of iphone or android instead of just bes5 blackberry devices.
Now I love me some rooted droid, like my Nexus7 and old classic galaxy s 4g.
What exactly is Knox? I read a little that its a bit that you can flag.
Also anyone familiar with Airwatch? When I used to test it i had my rooted devices as compromised.
I may be getting elevated rights to even white list myself but in the meantime since its a company phone, I need to keep it someone stock, so I was hoping for a simpler debloated stock with maybe a toggleable root if no work around for Airwatch is available.

Knox is a flag system for Warranty void to my understanding.
Don't know about Airwatch, sorry.
Towelroot will root you in about 5 seconds SO LONG AS YOUR KERNEL DATE IS PRE-June 3rd. SuperSU can Un-root you too if needed. But you can also root, uninstall Towelroot.apk, and debloat the phone with the lists in other threads.
Good luckl

No problem. VZ phone should be brand new, delivered today. But then again, when I bought my wife and my Galaxy S 4g's, side by side from the stash, we had totally different setups. one had froyo, other eclair if I recall. even packaging was different. The sticker on my screen had no text, so I left it on. Hers had crap all over.
So hopefully it's got older kernel.
If it is newer, is it that I cannot root at all, or a more complicated method?
For reference air watch is an MDM solution so people can enroll with their personal device, so they can get the corporate email. Also adds an option to remotely wipe the corporate email accounts. Once it detects root it used to kill the email app and stop the emails.
Normally I love to play around with stuff but I don't want to be in limbo without email in between.
I think i should be able to hold off on activating the cell number and just play with it in Wifi mode for the time being, and rock the bold 9930 a few more days.

If it has the newer kernel, you may be able to flash back to NCG root, then modify what is needed, then update to NE9 again, and re-root after.
Nice, the box has SW Ver ending NCG, confirmed Kernel was on May xx.
I had it up but Airwatch kept failing.
I tried Rootcloak. Then saw that needed Cydia substrate.. then saw that needed SELinux changer... Then that needed Knox disabled...
That needs SuperSU.
Air watch still failed.
Removed all of that and installed fine. So I'll play with this some more later.
I guess I can just root up, kill bloatware, and then unroot again.
Well I went to reroot to play with it more, unrooted and still detected as Compromised.
It seems if it sees I have towelroot installed, not even if rooted, its compromised.
At least I narrowed that down. Ill retry rootcloak later and ensure I have towelroot uninstalled.

BIG QUESTION:
I have not turned on Sprint service on the phone yet and was wondering if Sprint will detect if the phone has been rooted before I try to activate it and then not allow me to activate it?? I am basically wondering if I should wait to root the phone till after I activate it, because I don't want Sprint to ban it, but I also don't want all that bloatware on it either.
Background:
I have kept "feature/dumb phones" ever since I've had Sprint and I've been with the consecutively for more than 10 years with the same "plan" that gives me free 3G internet, but times are changing and while my plan is perfect for me (price and everything else balanced) I'm finally giving in to the data and bandwidth Gods. I find it a shame Sprint or other carriers don't provide a toolkit to customize their phones to how people want them and for the most part I just want my smartphone to be "barely smart" and mostly just a NICE phone with broadband convenience. I don't want to live so plugged in all the time, so a custom ROM seems right.
I have held out for a very long time on getting a smart phone. I don't change phones, but every 4-5 years. I bought a HTC EVO Shift 4G used with a slightly cracked screen (on the edge) and have refurbished it with a new screen and new circuit chip/ribbon cable and I've got it all working nicely now. I'm rockin an old Samsung Rant (slider) and honestly I think sliders are dying, but as long as I can use one I always will.
I have been teaching myself how to root my phone through various posts (the whole past week) on this web site and the only thing I've found that will temproot my HTC Evo Shift is Visionary+ and I had to install it manually since the PLAY market doesn't have it anymore. I'm working on getting through all the various instructions to permanent root it. Then I was gonna load JustWorksTechnology's ROM v2 and hopefully like it and use it bloatware free.
Lastly - I have temprooted the phone, and even then I don't see the option to remove the bloatware apps when I go to manage applications in the regular menu system. Do I find a bloatware/root uninstaller type app, once I'm temprooted, to remove this stuff if I wanted to stick to the stock ROM and just get the bloatware off it? or how else is removing stock apps from a stock ROM accomplished?
FYI - I've gotten rom manager/clockwordmod recovery on it, but I realized before trying that I can't even do a backup ROM to "start the ROM experimentation process" without having full permanent root privileges first.
Sorry if this was a little long. Just figured I'd introduce my highly technical Android and PC freedom forever - SELF. 1st post on this site. Yes, I actually did watch the NOOB video.
To get rid of bloatware you need a root explorer or something like Titanium Backup. Just be aware deleting it may cause issues when trying to get OTA updates.
And there's no way for Sprint to detect root.

About detecting a root
Well if Sprint would be able to detect a root at all, then activating a phone or not, it would be detected.
You can either detect a root, or not detect a root.
And to answer your question; "Can I uninstall bloatware from my stock ROM?"
I was about to give a "no", but then I realized something. If you root and use your stock ROM, you can download Titanium Backup (app in the Playstore) and the app will let you delete bloatware. Only if rooted though, obviously.
Yes ofcourse, ROOT ALL

Posting to root or not to root on XDA is like saying should we legalize weed at a weed distribution center, Anyways you are ONLY gaining functionality by having root and really not losing anything.
I love the responses. lol thanks everyone. Well, then I guess activating a ROOTED phone on Sprint shouldn't be an issue. Thats what I needed to know.
1. Well, then what remains is what ROM is best for my SHIFT. Anyone got experience with the JustWorksTechnology one that has very recently been updated? or recommendations of any certain ROM?
2. Do these ROMS include all the default menu system that comes on the phone or do they do away with that as well?
IE: I know the main purpose is of a ROM is to get rid of bloatware and gain performance and a few added features, but will I be missing any normal parts of the menu system that are normally there or do I get all that too with the Android OS?
3. Whats a good Android emulator for me to play around with ROMs before loading it to my phone?
You're activating it over the air right, not taking it into the store to have it added to your account? If you're doing it yourself or having them do it over the phone you're good, but if this is something you bought from someone else and have to get put on your line in-store then you don't want to root until after they have it in the system.

But, Titanium Backup (and the like) can't remove bloatware unless you are rooted right?
What type of OTA updates would cause issues? PRI, PRL, Firmware, etc.. ?
I figure you are just saying if it tries to update something that isn't there, there could be issues right?
What the issue could be with a used phone is a bad ESN.

Congrats! Always fun learning something new. Personally I started off rooting with a previously water damaged HTC MyTouch 3G Slide. I eventually ended up with 3 altogether, and as these phones required repair I turned to the XDA community. I couldn't be happier with learning all the in's and out's of working with Android, the various phone producers and the different cell phone companies. So, Cheers! Wish you the best of luck.
Rooting before activation?
Hello,
I'm am going to take advantage of Sprint's Black Friday promotion to get an SG3 for my partner. He's not very technical but I'd prefer to root his phone so that he can take advantage of Titanium Backup. Do I need to activate the phone prior to rooting it or can I root it first? I know I have to turn it on and enable USB debugging mode. I want to say that when I got my E4GT, I had to activate it before doing anything on the phone.
Is there a non-root method for backup that will back up app data and not require a connection to the computer? I looked at the Ultimate Backup Tool, but it appears to require a USB connection to a computer to work. I like the simplicity of TiB.
Thanks

I ordered the phone and it should arrive next week. Do I have to activate the phone before rooting it? This would just be a rooted stock JB ROM. Giving him anything else will confuse the hell out of him. If you think not rooting it is better, what would be the best way to backup app data, etc? I haven't really found any non-rooted backup solutions that don't require connecting to a computer. Once rooted, will he have to ignore all OTA updates as well?

there are ways to block OTA updates, thus preventing root issues. From when I was researching root for my Motorola Droid X2 last summer, if your phone receives an OTA update and you froze/removed system apps it can brick your phone.
Looking back on that, I question "brick". You can probably still SBF, although probably won't keep your data.

Can anyone help me with this? The phone is expected to arrive either Wed or Thurs and I'll be heading out of town to see him on Saturday.
I see this notification about the 4.3 update that needs to be upgraded. Now it's persistently on my notifications bar and it's annoying.
I have a stock rooted phone with Hotspot mod and I'm afraid that updating to 4.3 is going to cause me to lose the root status, unlocked status (I'm using Vodafone SIM while I'm here) and possibly trip up other things that I'm not prepared for.
Does it matter whether I'm on the Sprint network when I upgrade the ROM? I've seen the instructions to upgrade to these newer builds that won't lose root status or trip the Knox software (does this matter?! I don't get why it matters honestly).
Appreciate the advice.

Not sure on your main question about updating off a Sprint network, but I believe you'd be fine since most folks have updates set to only update when on wifi. Wifi is not generally Sprint.
If all you want to do is get the notification to stop bothering you, on the notification pane, long press on the notification, go to App Info and uncheck the notification box. There's not a lot in the 4.3 or the MK2 updates worth having if you're happy with the phone now.
As I understand it, the Knox thing is about making the platform secure for corporate users of the phone. So companies know if the phone has been tampered with and can use that information to not let the phone access internal data, etc. From what I've read, Sprint has no problem doing any warranty/service on the phones no matter the knox status. And word is it does impact your Sammy warranty either, but that info seems more sketchy at this point.

Thanks for the info on Knox. That makes sense what you said.
I followed your instructions about the update notification so it's not bugging me now. I think I'll wait until I get back to the states to take care of this since I don't feel like it's urgent.
I did the towelroot last night on my AT&T S4. Worked like a champ.
I installed SU Pro, Busybox Pro, and Titanium BU Pro afterwards. SU pro failed to update the binaries, so I don't know what that means. I uninstalled some of the known bloatware, but it gave ominous warnings as I uninstalled bloatware, etc. Although, the phone is working fine with less battery drain. No problems, whatsoever.
Is there a list of bloatware that can be safely uninstalled with the AT&T S4 KitKat ROM anywhere? There's so much crap on here, but I don't want to disable features that are maliciously tied to it. So far; this is awesome!
I had a popup from Samsung today, wanting me to update my security settings. It warned that certain software programs that I may have installed could compromise the security of my phone. I declined; fearing that it may disable my new root status. I don't know who to believe, but it's damn sure not AT&T or Samsung. I also got the "unlocked" symbol upon re-boot. Does that mean that I tripped KNOX? Will Triangle away clear that? The status shows: "Custom". Yet; the phone is working perfectly. I want to know if I should freeze or uninstall FOTA's. Seems like that's going to be a constant PITA.
On another note (no pun intended), I've downloaded certain programs that I thought / knew were useful - some paid / some free - that were memory / data / battery hogs, even though they didn't appear to be so in the EULA's. Is there any program or list of programs from the Play Store that are known pigs? How the hell do you know???
And, speaking of "note", has anyone used this on the Samsung Note 3? Ditto the above questions. I have a brand new one that's nothing but a $700.00 paperweight. It would kick ass if this worked on my Note 3!
I know that this is a new method, but has anyone experienced any negative side effects? Not me, so far. Any suggestions for add-ons for improvement of the performance of either device? This guy is going to get a nice donation this Friday!
A little help?
Thanks,
Jim

My S4 is starting to die, so I'm getting a new phone tomorrow or the day after. I'm basically torn between the S7 and the Note 7. Problem is, root is a priority. I gather the S7 root is pretty ugly at the moment. Note7 root seems fine, though, but I'm having a hard time figuring out all the pros and cons from all the different forums there are to read. So can someone give me a quick rundown of what's lost when I do the Note7 root? Thanks!
Warranty.
Other then that you get the features of rooted phone which can be a never ending list.
I don't think it's that simple. Since you have to flash a Sprint image, people are saying a lot of important apps and features stop working, but I haven't found anybody specifically saying what it is that stops working.
You won't lose your warranty with the Sprint image method. However it's an older firmware and may have some weird bugs or apps that have compatibility issues. It will also probably never see updates.

Can't you just push the updated apks to the device?

Even if you push the updated apks, they still will force close probably. I tried downloading a previous samsung music apk for example, it loads but whenever you try to play music it stops freezes phone and force closes just like the current up to date version. Wish I could figure out what causes it or find a work around... I prefer to use stock music apk but been using shuttle+ pro for now for music.

Monthly security updates are increasingly important now that organized automated mass-hacking is becoming common. Samsung has finally started releasing security updates promptly. I wouldn't wan to use a phone that was extra-vulnerable to being remotely accessed and controlled.
Also, does Samsung Pay work with the current root method?
Just to list what I came across as NOT working.
1) Samsung Pay and Android Pay
2) Can't update Samsung Apps like always on display or Samsung Notes.
3) voice over LTE. (works for me but others are saying it doesn't)
4) WiFi Calling
5) Bluetooth (I use a Huawei Watch and Bluetooth in the car. If I reboot my phone it will not connect to either. I have to re-pair both but after it continues to work until I reboot or turn on power saving)
I'll add to the list if I figure out anything else but so far battery life has been amazing and the Bluetooth issue I can live with.

Hello everyone, so ive had my S8 for two and a half years now, and when my 2 year warranty ran out i decided to experiment and play around with rooting/roms. I never quite managed to ever root my phone properly, as it always soft bricked, still not sure why, but irrelevant now. Since then my phone still thinks that its rooted (even though it isnt), im pretty sure this is due to the Knox fuse being tripped. It doesnt really bother me as i can still use my phone for everything i ever need, and it gets official updates from Samsung monthly (even got One UI on time), however, the one thing i am desperately missing is the contactless payment. My question is, is there a way to maybe trick, or bypass the google root check to set up contactless payment again? I have seen people saying you can if your phone is rooted, by editing some build files, however, since i have never managed to properly root this phone, is there another way? Cheers for any info/help.
