My S4 is starting to die, so I'm getting a new phone tomorrow or the day after. I'm basically torn between the S7 and the Note 7. Problem is, root is a priority. I gather the S7 root is pretty ugly at the moment. Note7 root seems fine, though, but I'm having a hard time figuring out all the pros and cons from all the different forums there are to read. So can someone give me a quick rundown of what's lost when I do the Note7 root? Thanks!
Warranty.
Other then that you get the features of rooted phone which can be a never ending list.
I don't think it's that simple. Since you have to flash a Sprint image, people are saying a lot of important apps and features stop working, but I haven't found anybody specifically saying what it is that stops working.
You won't lose your warranty with the Sprint image method. However it's an older firmware and may have some weird bugs or apps that have compatibility issues. It will also probably never see updates.

Updates for many samsung apps will not go through. The 2 big ones that I remember are gear manager and always on display. No galaxy gear devices will work if you root.

Can't you just push the updated apks to the device?
Sent from my VK815 using XDA-Developers mobile app
Even if you push the updated apks, they still will force close probably. I tried downloading a previous samsung music apk for example, it loads but whenever you try to play music it stops freezes phone and force closes just like the current up to date version. Wish I could figure out what causes it or find a work around... I prefer to use stock music apk but been using shuttle+ pro for now for music.

Monthly security updates are increasingly important now that organized automated mass-hacking is becoming common. Samsung has finally started releasing security updates promptly. I wouldn't wan to use a phone that was extra-vulnerable to being remotely accessed and controlled.
Also, does Samsung Pay work with the current root method?
Just to list what I came across as NOT working.
1) Samsung Pay and Android Pay
2) Can't update Samsung Apps like always on display or Samsung Notes.
3) voice over LTE. (works for me but others are saying it doesn't)
4) WiFi Calling
5) Bluetooth (I use a Huawei Watch and Bluetooth in the car. If I reboot my phone it will not connect to either. I have to re-pair both but after it continues to work until I reboot or turn on power saving)
I'll add to the list if I figure out anything else but so far battery life has been amazing and the Bluetooth issue I can live with.

love everything about this phone, but before making the plunge I had a few questions.
1. I'm looking to get the L29 version. This is correct?
2. What is the notification issue I keep reading about? I read the forums but it doesn't seem concise. No notifications come up? some? does this effect one model over the other?
3. Is the audio jack volume high? on the Nexus 6p it's abysmally low.
4. Does this phone support MHL/HDMI out? i know there's Miracast and screen mirroring, but looking to use a cable if possible.
Thanks for your answers, really want this phone.
1 -Ideally, yes. Though either will work.
2 - Permissions and the "battery firewall" are messing with people. The device works much harder to keep the battery usage down than any device before it, so getting used to that takes a while, and people think it has "notifications issues" (Though I think there is one legit "issue" with whatsapp, but I dont use it)
3 - Has been by far good enough for me.
4 - Dont know, havent tried.
So do notifications not pop up? I read also about apps basically closing while in the background.

The way I understand it, one of the settings under the performance settings causes all background apps to close when the screen shuts off. You can fix this by whitelisting each app that you want to remain open. Like you, I have read other vague accounts in the forums and reviews about apps not staying in memory, but I don't know if they're talking about that or something similar to what the GS6 and Note 5 do with RAM management. I sincerely hope it's not the latter, as that's the whole reason I got rid of my Note 5.
As long as I can turn some of this off and make the phone behave more or less "normal", I'll be happy. My L29 arrives tomorrow.
As i said before in other Threads : NO NOTIFICATION ISSUES FOR ME SINCE B162 Update. (And yes i have whatsapp)

Is this a standard ota update? For which model if yes?
I flashed update from Thread here in XDA. L-29 3Gb.
Im not sure when it goes well... but i think it was B152.... B103 was annoying and there was defently a issue... but since B152... i think it works great.
I'm using L29 in Seattle with AT&T. I have no notification issues at all. My only issue is my Microsoft Band 2 doesn't always work. The audio jack volume seems perfectly normal to me when I last used it.

So, I received my L29 yesterday and set it up and played with it all day. I tested notifications and everything else I could think of. I have had no issues at all so far. The firmware I'm on is 103 and there are no updates when I check. Everything seems to be working as it should.
Reading the forums on here for several days before, I was expecting a hot mess. I actually kind of like Huawei's UI. It's different. I'm not even going to put Nova Launcher on this time.
I'm in Texas on AT&T LTE.

Just to add to the good review for AT&T. I have dual AT&T sims in this bad boy and enjoying it. Honetsly, the software has the best dual sim manager I have seen. Getting solid speeds. Getting used t EMUI is interesting.
Anyone know how to update to B156 from B103 on the L29? My OTA doesnt exsist.
yet. if ure still completely stock u should receive OTA updates at some point in the near future
I am stock. Waiting those 14 days to unlock the bootloader. Need coffee money!

Just want to give an update on my experience since receiving the phone..
First day was good, but I'm now seeing the notification issue. I have an L29 on B103. It seems to be mostly the email client I use (TypeMail or Blue Mail), but I tried stock Gmail and had the same issue. When the screen is off, I no longer get instant notifications. It seems like there's about a 5-6 minute delay before they come in, like the internet connection goes to sleep.
Yes I have turned off all battery optimizations for the apps and whitelisted them. I also set all of the notification options to "on". I have heard that rooting and disabling "phone manager" fixes this, but I'm not quite ready to take that plunge yet. There are no updates available for my device.

Thanks. Do you know what this update is supposed to fix/improve?
Edit: Scratch that, I see the update notes, but it seems the file you linked won't work. It's 1.4GB and says it's not compatible. I'm trying to do the incremental update to 153 now, but all of the links for the smaller update are broken for 160 on that thread.

I will try to post some pictures and maybe re-zip what i have and create a download link... when i get home from work
Since release 2 of the N dev preview, I've really been pretty impressed with the stability and features, especially multi-windows. I seem to use that on a daily basis, either referencing 1 window while I do something on another window, or just 1/2 watching some vid while I do something else. The size of the Pixel C seems to work well with the multi windows, I have the feature on my 6P rom but don't use it anywhere as much.
The quick tiles and notifications are also decent. Usually the very 1st thing I do id unlock and root, but I've felt no need to do so. The apps I use have all worked, I know some folks had issues with some.
Also, the OTA install was also excellent, as easy as it gets.
How are you all liking N?
I'm really getting on with it, too. I think the testament to the OS is that it seems a bit more intuitive. Much like you were saying about not rooting, I don't feel the need to with the Pixel C at this point.
I also enjoy the fluidity of the OS in comparison to MM, it just seems smoother.
Does the OTA update from stock 6.0 work?
Does it still wipe all data from the tablet?
thanks

I'm wracking my brain to try and remember if it wiped my data and I just can't remember. Sorry.
Here is what I did; I signed up for the dev beta, then took the upgrade more or less like an OTA from 6.0 and it worked great! No flashing, nothing. Heck I didn't even put in a custom recovery. It took a little to download and install. I just can't remember if it asked me to restore all my apps and I said yes or it was still there.
I'm pretty sure it would say something about deleting all your data, but again I'm just not remembering. If you get it, please come back and let us know.

The beta program wipes data completely. It is like a typical fullvwipe or in HTC terms, a RUU.
I think I didn't have a full wipe when I changed to N.

AFAIK the OTA doesn't wipe your data. Flashing via fastboot wipes. They also started releasing flashable zips beginning with Dev Prev 2, which also don't wipe. Idk if you can just flash that zip over Marshmallow.
as to the OP query, I like it a lot. I'm impressed by the options and, much more so, by the stability.

I needed to revert because mtp file transfer didn't work. Also every time I connected the tablet on adb it was immediately forcefully shutdown and couldn't start until I plugged the cable.
Other than that, I didn't find an option to enable usb tether....but then again I didn't find this option in marshmallow (afterwards)...what the **** google?
Oh and mtp is also extremely unreliable back on marshmallow. I don't know what the **** they did with this tablet. I believe I will jump on the next tablet bandwagon if I happen to see one....
OTA to Android N is non-disruptive. The way back is.
I have many issues with Android N but cannot go back because of the full wipe.
I hoped that I will be able to use non tablet apps in the half screen mode but that does not work. I am loosing sound when disconnecting headphones. Some apps crash. You Tube cannot specify quality setting, public wifi hot spot without Internet connectivity drains battery quickly.
I regret my decision of installing Android N.

There was way too many non compatible apps for my liking with N. Firefox would always crash, widgets wouldn't work with certain apps, I'd get random freezes, the Youtube app seemed jacked kinda, and overall...I thought the tablet seems LESS responsive. I switched back to MM.
Dude, all you have to do is back up all your data to Google (you can enable it in the Backup & Restore) Drive. When you opt out of the Beta it sends you an OTA file for MM. When it uninstalls N and reinstalls MM it literally finds the fact that you reset your tablet back to MM and re-installs everything for you. It worked flawlessly for me last night. Wasn't a pain in the butt in the slightest.
Actually at the end I reverted back to Android. You are right that all apps are automatically reinstalled however they are not configured, and you loose any local data.
I'm running Android N and want to use Smart Lock, but whenever I try setting Smart Lock or a trusted device, location, etc, it says I can't utilize Smart Lock because my device is encrypted. I've never setup encryption, and I can't remove encryption either. I can't even activate OK Google from any screen, and it's all because of the encryption. Is this a mandatory feature of Android N?
Has anyone got OK Google to work on all screens and lockscreen?
Google N is good but this is a preview issue so there's a fair few bugs within, e.g. YouTube crashing, low benchmark scores, dual screen having limited functionality and random error codes when opening apps.
I've reverted to MM and the process was super simple.
I'll wait for the third iteration and see if that irons out these issues, but N is very promising and I feel it'll really help release the potential of this tablet.
I just ordered my tablet and it shipped today. I was wondering if it is worth updating to Android N right away or stick with marshmallow
Stick with mm if u seek stability
Sent from my D6603 using Tapatalk
I'm enjoying it but where is the May stability update?
It worked well for me. Only real problem I had was app compatibility. Use it as a media device, so HBO GO, Hulu, TNT, etc crashing on me led me to revert. Can't wait for N to be finalized and apps to be made compatible with split screen.
I just tried to use my banking apps for the first time on my brand new OnePlus 5. It's completely stock still, not rooted or anything. I have 2 banks and both of their banking apps fail to load. Also Android pay fails to work, tells me I need a network connection when I already have one. I confirmed my banking apps are still working on my HTC one m9 but I no longer have the s8 or s6 I use to use Android pay with. I tried searching on here and didn't see anyone else having these issues. Any ideas?
Is your bootloader perhaps unlocked?
Unless oneplus sends them out that way from the factory, no. But I haven't actually checked.
Did you give the apps the correct permissions?
I had the same issue with one of my Banking apps, fully stock with locked bootloader, and when opening the app it sent me to a website page stating that my software was modified.
My solution was to unlock bootloader, install TWRP, root and use banking on my laptop

I guess my solution is going to be to carry my old HTC around and tether off the OnePlus when I need to check my account balance. I sure hope they fix this soon.
Have you tried Magisk hide? Every app i've tried has been spot on with that, work email, snapchat, everything really, don't use banking apps on my phone so couldn't say for sure.
I got an update last night, plus I went into app permissions and gave them every permission possible. Still no go. It says the app has encountered an unexpected problem after it tries for maybe 15 seconds to load.
Snapchat works fine. I haven't tried magisk. I wasn't going to bother rooting this phone because I like it as is.
Android Pay and my bank apps work fine on my stock, locked bootloader OP5. I'm in the US.
Seems peculiar Android Pay fails. Have you tried hard resetting?
I cleared data and uninstalled all 3 apps and I got both banking apps to work on the second try. Android pay kept telling me I needed a data connection which I already had. I realized NFC wasn't turned on so I turned that on and then it seemed to get past that part but it tells me my card isn't supported so I need to look into that with my bank.
Not sure why it didn't work the first time. It seems like I've had to reboot this phone for weird glitches a lot more than I did on my old s6. Hopefully that doesn't continue.
Update: they stopped working again. They seem to work once and then the next time you to try to log in it fails every time. Glad I still have an old HTC one m8 I can bank with. Lol. I'm not doing Android pay on a phone without a finger print sensor though.

You're stock and they're not working? Weird.
Do you have to de-authorise the banking apps to use them on another phone? My back accounts app requires that
I don't believe so. I traded the s6 on the s8 and they worked fine right away on both of those ones when I first got them. Plus I've used them interchangeably on my main phone and my backup HTC m9 quite a bit. I reinstalled them on the m9 when the OnePlus failed to work and that's how I've been getting by.
I have been having an issue with Venmo. It won't let me verify the device, this has been happening since I got the device. Now I am unlocked/rooted with Magisk hiding, and it's still not letting me verify. So strange.

Figured out my issue. I had an adblock enabled and it wouldn't let it send the code because of that. Disabled and all is well.:good::good:
I am in the UK. My OP5 is completely stock. I have Lloyds, Nationwide and Barclaycard banking apps installed and working plus Android Pay. So, it should work OK.
I am running version .8 of the OS
Alan
I believe I was on 4.5.10 before the update and now it's 4.5.11. So maybe they broke it with the .10 update? I really don't see anything else I could have done to make it not work. I've never had a problem before even on rooted phones.
OP curious what does your android pay do that it doesn't work?
Does it open or when you pay it doesn't work
I haven't tried it at a terminal yet, but I believe it's ready to work. I switched banks and my new debit card isn't compatible with Android pay even though I was lead to believe it did.
I added my one credit card and my old debit card and they seem to be ready to go now.
So my issue now is only with the banking apps, not Android pay.
My snapchat (lest safetynet) won't work at all. Tried different roms.....
Daughter had her Note 4 replaced a few months ago, and it had just been sitting there. Earlier this week got a DJI Spark, and the flight controller requires an Android or iOS phone. Got tired of pulling the case off and on MY phone (S8+), so figured I could use hers as a WiFi-only, dedicated device.
My main concern is that I don't think we ever got the phone formally unlocked by AT&T. I've gotten around that so far just by pulling out the sim. It doesn't seem "happy" about it, but hasn't stopped me configuring the phone to do what I need so far - though it would be nice to be able to uninstall all the AT&T apps that are on there even after a full reset/wipe.
So wondering if there is:
A) Some way to unlock this old thing so I can rest easy it won't have an issue waking up one day
B) A more recent ROM and/or security updates (while it mainly will access the Drone/Receiver WiFi I presume I need to still connect to the home LAN occasionally for app updates)
C) Anything I could flash to make it less of a phone and more of a small tablet (since that's how I'll be using it)
Thanks in advance!
If you are saying the phone is locked to AT&T and you want it unlocked then see here:

Apparently no one has been able to root your device before because they cannot unlock the bootloader:

My recommendation is to do a factory reset and use something like Package Disabler Pro app to freeze unneeded applications.

Ah... well that's too bad. I like that the phone has a replaceable battery, which makes it almost worth keeping as long as possible for that. Will try your suggestion on the other. Thanks anyway!
I used to connect 2 Bluetooth devices and listen on both devices at the same time on Android 10. Ever since the tablet got updated to Android 11, this dual audio feature doesn't work.
Steps I used on Android 10 to get dual audio is listed below. The same setup doesn't work on Android 11. Even though its able to connect to both devices, it is allowing to play on only one device at a time
1) Pair 2 Bluetooth devices
2) go to Media panel in the notifications section which allows you to enable sound on both devices at same time
Hi there,
You're not alone with this problem. It seems Samsung decided the S5e is not worth supporting this feature anymore and simply removed it with the update.
There's a thread in the Samsung community forum about it, but as you might guess, no official statement:
https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5/tablets/dual-audio-fehlt-nach-update-auf-android-11-one-ui-3-1-tab-s5e/m-p/3606484#
Feel free to address your dissatisfaction there, the more voices, the higher the small chance of getting it back the way it was before...
Unfortunately the thread is in German, but making the problem more international can only help!

I was actually thinking about that too, but this will void your warranty of the device, right?
Nevertheless, I'm still considering this, especially also since Samsung most likely won't provide another update to Android 12, even though the sister device Tab S6 is confirmed to get it.
Is there any particular how-to description that you followed, which you could link here?
Thanks for the hint!

I pretty much followed instructions in this youtube video:
As far as firmware to choose in video, I choose Cellular South since that is the USA version. And for my tablet there is no CP file since it doesnt have a radio. When you hold down volume keys and plug in tablet it also automatically goes in debug mode versus having to select it like he did, at least for me it did. I believe those were the only differences in video. It took my windows PC forever to download and install drivers, that was only hiccup. Took along time flash also, be patient, dont touch anything, let it do its thing.
As far as warranty, IDK, this is just flashing same Software back to device, not a custom ROM, no rooting required, seems like it wouldnt be void. You'd have to ask that question to more experienced members here. But I can tell you, warranties usually suck anyway, and if your device is good out of the box for a month it is typically good for years. Hit me up if you decide to do it and have a question, Ill try to help best I can. It was a must feature for me to have and so glad to have it back. I also used to watch movies with my wireless and hand someone else a wired pair, that feature also was removed in 11 but works in 10
