My USB port charges VERY slowly now. Takes about 8-10 hours now. I tried using a cable I had laying around, worked for awhile and it started being slow again.
So I was wondering if it'd be worth buying a dock, or to buy a new power brick and cable?
I've heard that the pogo charging on the Nexus 10 is much faster than, and I am assuming it is the same case for the Nexus 7,
and buying a new power brick might not even work. I heard it could be any part in my tablet, the port, the motherboard, the battery.
The tablet and power brick are from Feb 2013.

I messed up my stock asus nexus 7 usb cable, still got the brick and now im using a blackberry cable but it takes AGES, ill leave it charging a whole night and it only gets charged to about 50-70% max. this is really annoying my battery is constantly dead, right now it is this is just getting annoying. I want to get a new one.
Does anyone know where i can get the STOCK USB ONLY i got the charging brick if not,
do you think the cable will do good job of charging it
cableuniverse. co . uk /lindy-premium-usb-2.0-cable-type-a-male-to-micro-b-male-0.5-metre
And are there any cables that charge it even faster than the stock cable
I think the shorter the cable in length, the quicker it will charge. Correct me if im wrong but the blackberry cable is kind of long no?
Re-posted from Nexus 7 General (2012).
I just bought a new Nexus 7 (2013), it is about a week old.
Last night I left the supplied ASUS charger and micro-USB cable plugged in overnight (fortunately the cable was not connected to the Nexus.) When I woke up this morning the micro-USB plug had literally melted, with plastic oozing out of the plug housing and through the plug itself. Had the cable been plugged in it would have destroyed the Nexus USB connector. I've seen several reports on the web of this scenario but none with a clear explanation of where the "fire" started. See the attachment.
Does ASUS have a problem here? In any case my plan for now is to use a wireless charger, it is too scary to think what would have happened to the tablet had the cable been plugged in.
I've opened a case with ASUS and they've asked me to RMA the cable so they can inspect it.
It just shorted out. No circuit interruption in the brick leads to certain destruction.

Indeed. Makes you wonder why Asus didn't include some time of current limiting circuitry in the charger cube. How much more could that have cost?
Must be a defect, I've left mine plugged to the wall and not into the N7 for weeks at a time, and this never happened. FWIW, I use a wireless charger now, so I don't physically stress the charging port. I use the Nokia DT-900, got it from AT&T for 50% off. They are still on sale for 25 bucks, worth every penny, and charges through even my thick Seidio case.

My previous tablet was a Kindle Fire and its USB port failed after two years of plugging and unplugging the charge cable. That was my clue to get a tablet with Qi charging the next time around......
I already had a charger on order before this problem occurred... Amazon had a PowerBot® on sale for $22 and it works great - charges through a Poetic case without a problem.

Good deal, anyhow I'd be all over ASUS regarding them replacing (free) my charger as you are. Even if I never use it again, though I still use the USB cable that came with it for adb and fastboot and the occasional PTP USB transfer to/from PC.
So I have had my Nexus 7 2012 for awhile now, and at some point I dropped it while it was charging, it landed on the cable which broke the USB port and the cable. I put in a new charging port and tried using a generic cable and it charged it very slowly. So I bought the Samsung cable and that worked for about 3 weeks, but the cable then started to fall out of the port and now if I wanted to use it, I'd have to hold it in all the time. So right now I am stuck with a generic cable and have no idea what to replace the cable with. I wanted to get the original cable, but I can only find it with the power brick. Which would cost me $40.
Do any of you know of cables that'd work well with mine?

The TN7 has unfortunately been known to have wonky USB ports, so if you're having issues with it then you might want to contact the manufacturer and see about getting a replacement.
I had the same problem and I was able to fix it. Turn off the device, take a needle and try to narrow the USB port, GENTLY AND SLOWLY, try to make the hole to be tighter. I hope it helps. Tegra note is ****y stuff...
How?

Hey there my usb port, like many others has also gone bust. You mentioned trying to narrow the usb port, what do you mean by this? My tab has be useless for the past month since curries refused to repair it saying it was my fault. I guess its all down to me somehow fixing it any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Have you tried holding down the power button for around 30secs. My battery got drained completely and it didn't seem to be charging, even after a few hours using different chargers. After holding down the power button down for 30 seconds. Then releasing the button. Then pressing again. It came alive.
I may have had a different problem but hope it works for you.
charging problems...the port maybe?
Just bought a refurbished evga tn7 from ebay and it was charged 84% so cool. I played on it for a while bout maybe an hour or so. I left it to charge that night and it didn't charge very fast. Ever since it will only charge with the wall outlet with another cable or the one that came with it. Takes about 6 hours or so to charge even 40%. It also discharges very quickly about a percent a minute or so. It came with the 4.4.2 update. I love this tablet but I can hardly use it because of this. Please help!

hya - its not hard but you need some nerve, it is relatively easy to wire a QI wireless receiver direct to the battery then fit a charger into a suitable case.
I've done four of these now using fintie slate 7 extreme cases (ebay US) and QI elements from ebay UK. cost about 25 quid or so.
short term or as an alternative you can strip a usb cable or get a micro usb extension cable and wire that to the battery instead so you can charge it up using a smart USB charger. it is possible to wire into the charging circuit so it registers if you are carefull and solder to the board side of the USB otherwise the QI is probably a better option as the charger will switch off when it decides the battery has been charged minimising any possible fire risk from overcharging,
it is also possible to get a phone/computer repair shop to fit a new usb socket as the boards aren't available for some daft reason - they are listed on alibaba but not available.
the only issue is not having a working usb port but as long as you don't want to root the device it doesn't seem to be needed.

my wireless mod charges slower than it should as its only rated to 1A but not that slow - Ideally you need a 2A charger for tablets min 1A for decent charging, most phone chargers are 500-750mA.
otherwise turn the tablet off and all the power goes to charging.
OK guys, I've waited a while to finally post this but I'm about to toss this device.
So for the past few months USB charging cables no longer stick into the charging port. When you first get the device you could practically flail the phone around by the USB cord. However, now they are so lose I have to tape the cord to the phone to maybe get it just right and charge. The USB slot is looser than a two dollar whore now.
It first started with the factory charger (which died) and never got a replacement (thanks moto)! So got another 3rd party charger and that cable was better but still not tight. Now no cable will stick and is a sloppy mess.
I'm assuming this is going to require a RMA and replacement? Would this even be covered, and considering the RMA for my stock charger months later resulted in no new charger it's worrying too attempt a phone RMA. Let alone the short lifespan of the port. I only plug in ever 1-2 days by the way.
Anyone else having this issue and if so what did you do?

Out of all of my devices, I've only had one port fail, on a tablet, that I believe someone sat on while it was plugged in. But, on all of my devices, I plug them in and leave the device alone. Are you tossing your device around while it's plugged in, or sleeping next to it while it's plugged it? I know parts fail, but the stock charger clips in snugly on my moto daily, and on my tablet every 3rd day, and I have zero issues. Even my cheap cables and car charger plugs snugly. Maybe you just got a faulty part.

Take a look at the two spring loaded prongs on your cable. Are they still pointy and extended? Usually when this happens I notice my prongs have noticeable wear on them

No, I don't use my phone and cable as a mace or as a personal defense weapon when I play superhero on the weekend However it does have it's home on the nightstand next to the bed with one of my tablets. I haven't dropped or sat on the device whilst plugged in, I have done this with previous phones where it bends the metal on the USB cable but even then hasn't caused a loose port on those devices.
One of the cables indeed has worn down prongs to my surprise for being new, so I looked through my drawers of cables and found one with nice shiney new prongs. This does make locking in place more efficient in my case but not like it was new. You can still fairly easily loose connection moving the device around while plugged in but not instant disconnect from gravity like the stock charger or the other cables.
I would check the charging port for lint. This can cause a cable not to stay in. Simply take a piece of tape and roll it back onto itself with the sticky side out making sure it's the right side to fit in the port. I've done this with several devices and it makes a big difference.
