USB connector failure - good thing it wasn't plugged in - Nexus 7 (2013) General

Re-posted from Nexus 7 General (2012).
I just bought a new Nexus 7 (2013), it is about a week old.
Last night I left the supplied ASUS charger and micro-USB cable plugged in overnight (fortunately the cable was not connected to the Nexus.) When I woke up this morning the micro-USB plug had literally melted, with plastic oozing out of the plug housing and through the plug itself. Had the cable been plugged in it would have destroyed the Nexus USB connector. I've seen several reports on the web of this scenario but none with a clear explanation of where the "fire" started. See the attachment.
Does ASUS have a problem here? In any case my plan for now is to use a wireless charger, it is too scary to think what would have happened to the tablet had the cable been plugged in.
I've opened a case with ASUS and they've asked me to RMA the cable so they can inspect it.

It just shorted out. No circuit interruption in the brick leads to certain destruction.

Indeed. Makes you wonder why Asus didn't include some time of current limiting circuitry in the charger cube. How much more could that have cost?

Must be a defect, I've left mine plugged to the wall and not into the N7 for weeks at a time, and this never happened. FWIW, I use a wireless charger now, so I don't physically stress the charging port. I use the Nokia DT-900, got it from AT&T for 50% off. They are still on sale for 25 bucks, worth every penny, and charges through even my thick Seidio case.

My previous tablet was a Kindle Fire and its USB port failed after two years of plugging and unplugging the charge cable. That was my clue to get a tablet with Qi charging the next time around......
I already had a charger on order before this problem occurred... Amazon had a PowerBot® on sale for $22 and it works great - charges through a Poetic case without a problem.

Good deal, anyhow I'd be all over ASUS regarding them replacing (free) my charger as you are. Even if I never use it again, though I still use the USB cable that came with it for adb and fastboot and the occasional PTP USB transfer to/from PC.

Loose Charger

I've had my vibrant since August and lately I've noticed the charger is extremely loose. It wiggles left and right a lot and falls off very easily, has anyone else noticed this or is it just me??
I also have it with the charger that comes with the phone, good thing is i have another OEM charger.
I had this happen to my motorola cliq. hopefully its the charger cord and not the charge port on your phone...that would suck. Try a diff cord to see if that helps you out. Not to be a downer, but it was the port on my cliq...
A very small port (like our microUSB port) with a not so small cable lends itself to experiencing excess strain if you're not careful. This is the nature of small ports and the laws of physics.
I bought my Vibrant on craigslist so I can't vouch for the OEM cable, only have blackberry branded micro USB cables, and they work fine, very snug. So try a different cable, if its still just as bad it may be your port.
I just had to buy a new charger cause I had the same issue
I had this issue after about a month I went to a local discount electronic store and got a micro usb cord for 5 bucks works great
Op, exact same thing as of 3 days ago.
It's the cable. My nexus one charger fits the Vibrant perfect, no wiggle.

To be honest, tonight I woke up, my phone was lighting up telling me less than 15% left and I noticed the charger tilted downwards and didn't charge... Hmmmmm
You could go on amazon and find an external oem charger,it comes with an extra oem battery and i think it was like 30 bucks.
I never charge by phone anymore
$3 if you have the wall plug:

I have an old nokia micro usb charger that my brother jacked to use in his car hopefully it's not loose otherwise I'm gonna get a warranty replacement =/
wiggles left and right? Yes falls off very easily? NO
Ebay after market charger they work fine for me and very cheap
i really thought it was me i . i also notice that its not charging my phone as fast as it used to im talking about 30 min and only brings it up to 20%. and its charging while off!!
i find myself taking my moms charger a lot now a days lol
I too have had this issue. At first it was just the cable, as other MicroUSB cables had a more solid connection, but now it doesn't matter which cable I use, indicating the port in in the phone is at fault. I'm going to be asking T-Mo for a RMA because of it.

No USB Charging?

So this is the first tablet\phone I've ever had that doesn't charge off the USB cable. Is there something I'm doing wrong or a wrong setting? I really don't want to carry the power brick when I travel.
Also, is there a way to disable the Kies so it doesn't make me press home every time I plug it in?
Xoom doesn't charge over USB either. Apparently the battery is to large and USB power to weak.
I've tried numerous computers and other USB power bricks and the only thing that seems to charge the tablet was the (rather huge) power brick that Samsung packed in the box.

yeah I've tried ipad brick, kindle brick, etc. Not sure why they went so proprietary
I think most of these new tablets dont do usb charging. My xoom as well as my coworker's Asus Transformer doesn't do USB charging either.
The USB port doesnt provide enough juice to charge the device.

It's a myth about usb ports not providing enough power. It's up to the device to either accept a trickle charge, or require the full power of the brick. Devices like iPad and iPad 2 are set to accept a slower charge. It's a poor customer experience to disallow charging from the laptop, because many people like me don't like to carry multiple power bricks when traveling.
you can charge it if you turn it off
I used this for my iPad 1 on Windows 7 and it also works for my 10.1 I/O. It doesn't say that it is charging but if u look at the battery chart u will see it charging while its on.

What is the voltage of the charger that comes with the 10.1"?
I know when I got my 7" Tab I purchased a higher voltage but standard nonetheless 2.1v USB charger which worked fine.
If the voltage is the same we should be able to use the small charger that comes with the 7" Tab (and cables as the pin connector I believe is the same).

I can't see the difference between the Tab and the Tab 10.1 LE chargers. It's the same travel adapter and I have been using the original one for charging with the original cable.

I thought as much.... Well that will save me having to purchase any additional power hardware items.
My Google I/O powers up, albeit slowly, over USB. Just a shame the USB cable connects to the Tab via the proprietary 30pin connection...

It does indicate that it is charging when it's switched off. I haven't bothered to see how long it takes.
I find this insane. I got a IO Tab from eBay and received it today and it is awesome except for the fact that I now have to go buy a US-UK adaptor for the charger as it doesn't work with any of my existing USB chargers including the iPad charger or charge from PC/Mac.
I also have the top right hand corner glass lifting up annoyingly which Engadget reported on. I have taped that corner up and will get it sorted under warranty when its officially out I hope.
I have seen a USB adapter in Amazon which says it will connect the USB with any charger. I ordered one and will hopefully see soon if with this small item I can use my car adapter and the one from Nikon, Nokia, and and and
USB charger from smaller Galaxy tab works. You can order them on amazon.com or ebay.
Just to confirm, Tab charges over USB when the screen is set to off.
But I agress, USB socket sucks.

I bought an adapter off eBay that was quoted as being for the P1000. It works just fine on the 10.1v charging off USB, even when the screen is on. It charges quite quickly too.
It is a small USB cable that has a switch that allows you to put the cable in data or charge mode. I found that I had to disconnect the cable prior to switching modes for it to play nice however.

Actually the Asus Transformer does do usb charging in sleep mode. Little known feature although it says so on the quick guide slip you get in the box....
Yes it does charge, but only when the device is powered off, or the screen is powered off (sleep)
It won't charge over an apple connector, because they aren't keeping to the standard at all (as usuall) Samsung is also using a slightly altered version of the connector, but the charger, audio channels en video channels are in the right place
Just google/wiki on the 30-pins connector schematics

[Q] Modifiy Nexus 10 For Qi Wireless Charging?

In short, could we slap a Qi-compliant coil in our Nexus 10, wire it to the battery, and win?
The coil itself is pretty thin from what I've seen, and there is a bit of room in-between the battery and back plastic (the people with creaky and buckling cases should know about this).
I don't know if there's an actual control board that is needed, but perhaps the coil could be hooked either directly to the battery, or even through USB (that way you can be notified of charging). If a control board is needed, then this might be a bit harder than expected, unless the board itself is pretty thin too.
It looks like someone's managed to do something similar to a Nexus 7 already and had good results (even enters docking mode): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2070851
Edit: Instead of routing the coil to the USB or battery directly, we could even hook it to the Pogo pin area, like the person did for the N7 coil mod above.
I'm willing to give this a try, but may have to wait a few weeks till I can get the funds for a coil and for it to ship to me.

According to a-post-at-techchrunch-i-cant-link-to-cause-im-a-noob, the Nexus 10 has Qi already... is it wrong? I haven't opened my Nexus 10 to check
I have openned up my Nexus 10 and dont remember anything for wireless charging being there.
I saw someone mod the Galaxy nexus to enable this sort of thing and from what I remember you should be right Espionage, just as simply as you think. And yes there is room to do it.

I can find no reference to the device on the offical Qi website. This makes me highly skeptical that Qi is already present on the N10, perhaps they confused it with the N4?
Search for yourself if you'd like: http://www.wirelesspowerconsortium.com/products
As slow as the Nexus 10 already charges with it's stock USB cable... do you really WANT to charge it with Qi?
You might have to charge it for a week from 0% to get to 100%
Any further developments?
Hey Guys!
Is there any further developments on this possibility? :fingers-crossed:
Why not just use a pogo cable.... you would have to plug in a charging pad anyway.
Nexus 10 Wireless Charging Solution
I know it's been some time but I'm kind of surprized nobody posted a solution yet. I just had a Nexus 10 open and noticed not for the 1st time the pogo pins at the bottom that Google never even put to use. I can't even find an aftermarket docking station for it. We aren't talking about Apple here. Anyways the closest I've seen is a magnetic pogo pin charging adapter cable probably sold mostly to people who broke their USB ports. It seems nobody picked up on sewermike's comment. They DO have pogo pins and with a wireless coil (2-4 chained together) you could wire them to the + and - of the pogo pin cable easily. Also if you have access to old Nexus 2nd gen back covers you can get them there or on eBay cheap. It might be slow like TheAltruistic says but if you have a wireless device charging coffee table which I'm seeing more and more you can just set it on that. If I have time I'll do video or at least post my results.
ive got the pogo cable, if you can buy it do so - its well worth it, i think i paid £15 and i totally stand by it.
as for wireless charging, you can get wireless charging receiver cards that plug into the micro usb port, with this you can either plug it in and bend the cable around the tablet and hide it inside the case or plug it in and have it hang outside, you just rest the card on the charger.
please remember that is isnt a perfect solution as the card will get hot and overheat and stop charging or you'll spend all day charging the tablet.
i use to wirelessly charge the nexus 10 but id rather stick the pogo in

Charging port failing?

OK guys, I've waited a while to finally post this but I'm about to toss this device.
So for the past few months USB charging cables no longer stick into the charging port. When you first get the device you could practically flail the phone around by the USB cord. However, now they are so lose I have to tape the cord to the phone to maybe get it just right and charge. The USB slot is looser than a two dollar whore now.
It first started with the factory charger (which died) and never got a replacement (thanks moto)! So got another 3rd party charger and that cable was better but still not tight. Now no cable will stick and is a sloppy mess.
I'm assuming this is going to require a RMA and replacement? Would this even be covered, and considering the RMA for my stock charger months later resulted in no new charger it's worrying too attempt a phone RMA. Let alone the short lifespan of the port. I only plug in ever 1-2 days by the way.
Anyone else having this issue and if so what did you do?

Out of all of my devices, I've only had one port fail, on a tablet, that I believe someone sat on while it was plugged in. But, on all of my devices, I plug them in and leave the device alone. Are you tossing your device around while it's plugged in, or sleeping next to it while it's plugged it? I know parts fail, but the stock charger clips in snugly on my moto daily, and on my tablet every 3rd day, and I have zero issues. Even my cheap cables and car charger plugs snugly. Maybe you just got a faulty part.

Take a look at the two spring loaded prongs on your cable. Are they still pointy and extended? Usually when this happens I notice my prongs have noticeable wear on them
Sent from my SM-T810 using Tapatalk
No, I don't use my phone and cable as a mace or as a personal defense weapon when I play superhero on the weekend However it does have it's home on the nightstand next to the bed with one of my tablets. I haven't dropped or sat on the device whilst plugged in, I have done this with previous phones where it bends the metal on the USB cable but even then hasn't caused a loose port on those devices.
One of the cables indeed has worn down prongs to my surprise for being new, so I looked through my drawers of cables and found one with nice shiney new prongs. This does make locking in place more efficient in my case but not like it was new. You can still fairly easily loose connection moving the device around while plugged in but not instant disconnect from gravity like the stock charger or the other cables.
I would check the charging port for lint. This can cause a cable not to stay in. Simply take a piece of tape and roll it back onto itself with the sticky side out making sure it's the right side to fit in the port. I've done this with several devices and it makes a big difference.

AC charger being detected as usb charger.

Left my phone charging overnight, woke up and it was only at 66%, downloaded ampere and when its plugged in it says usb charger and charges very slowly
Likely the cable... get a good QC compatible cable and it will probably take off. Or it's the charger, without some testing it is hard to be certain.
I had the same exact thing happen with a Turbo Power 25. I noticed a pin was missing in my first one so I bought another one and it said "AC" again. You might need a new charger.
Same problem here...it's not the cable because I have purchased several...I did read somewhere the phone gets hung up in USB mode but there was no solution. Sometimes I have it plugged in and it will die while charging.....

actually for me it was the cable, ordered a new one from amazon not even OEM, just a qualcom quickcharge 2.0 certified for like 12 bucks and charges normally
I've been using these cables for over a year now... Have probably 10-12 scattered across home, office, laptop bags, and that I have given away.

That are $8 for two cables. Eversame's custom service is excellent, I had one cable flake out and it was likely my fault, but when I contacted them they sent me two cables to replace the bad one.
