As of 2 weeks ago, I received the Galaxy S4 (I9505) and I was rather happy having a faster mobile now. That is, until I added back the games I was playing on my Galaxy S3. For example, the game Family Farm Seaside (2D game I believe) was working perfectly and smoothly on my Galaxy S3.
But when I added it on my S4, the smoothness just vanished and it's quite shucky / laggy. Especially when I move around the screen. The stutter really starts when multiple things happen within the game (harvesting multiple crops at the same time) where the framerate just drops dramatically.
I've googled for a couple of hours, and the only "solutions" I can find is force the GPU on 2D games, force 4x, etc. I've tried all combinations, but it makes things worse rather than improving things.
Now.. My Galaxy S3 is using Cyanogenmod (current latest nightfly version) and has no problems with the game. Before you might ask.. While my S4 is also using Cyanogenmod (also latest nightfly), the game had issues on the S4 Stock ROM as well. Combined with the fact that I've tried multiple S4 Roms before I went to Cyanogenmod completely.
Is this an issue within the game or is this merely hardware related? (or software) of the S4? I'd figured the S4 would be faster, not slower.
its because the s4 doesnt get the right optimization, the S4 is better in term of everything but support, its related to the cpu, gpu....the S2, S3, NOTE 2 are better for gaming because they had good support....
So you are saying I can't do anything to solve the current issue at hand?

Hi
What about cange the PERFORMANCE PROFILE into Performance mode,(in Settings-Performance)and change the CPU governor into the Performance mode?Hope this could help
I'm afraid that isn't helping either.. If I do large amount of things inside the game (Family Farm Seaside) the frame rate drops a lot. Should mention that I don't have any problems within 3D games.. as far as I know anyway.

Several reviews mention that the the S4 is sluggish compared to the HTC One. I was in the AT&T Store yesterday and did my own testing by restarting both phones to get to a fresh slate, then opening up different apps simultaneously. The first one I did was Facebook. On the HTC One, the app opened and the login screen appeared nearly instantly. Meanwhile the S4 was still loading the app, several seconds later the login screen appeared. This type of lag was consistent across multiple tests I ran.
I really like the HTC One, for many reasons, including the fact that it runs much more quickly, however I ended up ordering the S4 because it has the superior camera, which is very important to me (again, that statement is based on several reviews I've read and looking at a lot of pictures taken on both phones).
I'm somewhat regretting getting the S4, but I am hoping that there is a way to disable some of the bloat on the S4 without rooting to speed things up. The S4 has the faster processor, so the fact that it runs slower in real life I attribute to the fact that Samsung has so many stupid features baked into the phone. Perhaps it's something else, but whatever it is, how can I get the S4 to operate as quickly as the HTC One?
This is a good place to look to get rid of the lag. My S4 is much snappier after freezing some bloat.

I'm not talking about benchmarks or specs but rather real world use. I've looked at tons of videos on youtube and the note 2 has the s4 consistently beat on opening apps and websites. Is it because it has a larger motherboard??? They both have quad cores and the same 2gb rams. Or is this because of software optimization because the note 2 has "mature" software.

Its because of android optimization. Note 2 is running on 4.1.2 which had loads of updates allready. Don't forget that the s4 is the only smartphone which runs 4.2.2 at the moment (except the nexus devices). S4 will get updates and will get just better and better. We just need to be patient.

true.. Note 2 is running 4.1.2 hence is faster than S4.. nevertheless, S4 is getting faster (using WanamLite) better battery life, smoother.

I too have used a note 2 stock and with many roms
and now have moved to S4 since 26 april and no doubt that S4 is fast and enjoyed using it and never wud want to go back to Note 2
this is my personal experience and havng abt 40 apps and not filled with any crap and keep the phone with only thing req
How can 4.1.2 be faster than 4.2.2 if it's the same Google release?
I've had an s3 and it was super buggy and slow even with custom rooms. My note 2 in the other hand was a beast!! Opening and closing apps was a breeze and Web pages loaded smoothly. The s4 on the other hand I'd rate as being in the same league as the mote 2 which is disappointing given that this is a newer generation chipset. I'm more excited for the release of the Google edition though which is the main reason why I switched to an s4.

Simple answer... new software needs time to get the bugs out.
Sent from my GT-I9500
Android 4.2 needs fixing definitely , or perhaps optimisation on key lime pie will be better ... Hopefully
I noticed this one too. My friend has the Note II (I also had the same device a couple of weeks ago) and the device is noticeably faster than my GT-I9500.
same here.. i have both and note2 is faster in everything, specially taking photos.
No wonder my sister's s3 on 4.2.2 is performing terribly. Lag is prevalent and touchwiz keeps on crasing and restarting everytime she plays games.
To be honest the s4 is a disappointing upgrade over the note 2, this is one of the few times wherein I wished I stuck with my old phone lol You can't really tell the difference except with the screen and the battery life but there's a big 150 dollar difference in the price tag.
Just bought Asphalt 8, honestly expected it to run flawlessly on my Black GS4-i9500 but that was not the case. Installation was fine, but game is really laggy and the graphic is kind of messed up and unstable. It's like the graphic card is not powerful enough to run it at full speed. I'm playing on default settings and I made sure there is no application running besides Airborne. My phone is a genuine one and have not rooted it. It's the same for Minion Rush and Asphalt 7.
What might be causing this problem according to you guys and is there any way to fix this?
Many thanks.

Hi Guys,
I'm planning to buy S4 but have found quite diverse feedback, like the issues with heat up, lagging etc. I had to choose between HTC One & S4 but the image quality in daylight shots, SD Card & removable battery was what I prefer the most.
I would also love to know which one should I go for i.e. i9500 or i9505.
I'll be playing some casual games not the most graphic intense games and that too for about 30-40 min at a time, will be always on wifi ON, emailing, fb etc.
I would love to hear from S4 users who are using it from quite sometime.
Thanks
Been using i9500 for seven months. Perfectly happy with the device. Never had a problem with a single game. After 4.3 update it has become extremely smooth. No overheating. All stock.
Thanks for your reply. I would also love to know if there is any difference between the two in camera shots.

If you are going to have to choose between a variant of the S4, then why not go for the i9506 (if it's available in your area). It has advanced LTE, Snapdragon 800 (faster than the 600 on i9505 and Exynos on 19500) and also Adreno 330 GPU.
I also compared the battery life and performance with a friend running the i9505 and it lasted about 1 hour longer and looked a tiny bit faster in opening games. This is the latest model of the S4 and if it's available, you should definitely get it. Also it doesn't have the annoying knox warranty issue like the i9505, so rooting it would not be a problem (although rom development is a bit slow)

Unfortunately, i9506 isn't available in our area. I have to choose between i9500/i9505
i9500 uses Sony Exmor RS sensor compared to i9505's Sony Exmor R sensor.
so, i9500 takes better picture to i9505
Camera is better on the i9500 from what I've read so far. But yes, custom rom development is much less than that of 9505. If that doesn't matter to u much, then go for 9500 as it is a little better than its cousin in almost every respect.
So, i9500 will be a good choice to choose between the two.
Can we expect the overall performance including battery performance to improve once we have official KitKat for S4?
I9505 for development. Ability to flash Google Edition Roms and there are many custom TW roms and AOSP roms. It is better supported by the devs if development is important.

Yes, I would want the ability to flash & custom roms, but if Samsung makes KitKat available for i9500/i9505 at the same time than I'll go for the stock i9500 as we didn't have 3G coverage yet (talking about 4G is over the moon here).
How different are the camera performance on the two. I have seen quite a few shots & found that sometimes I would see i9500 doing good & the other times i9505
Also can we expect the camera performance to get better with new firmware or KitKat.
Both cameras are probably on par. The I9500 has a newer sensor inside it. Firmware updates bring camera firmware updates too. Both should be fine, but obviously your not going to get picture quality when you compare to a digital camera or DSLR.
Both are adequate in good lighting conditions and compare to the other handsets currently out there.

Hello
I have read many hours about this phone and will probably be my next device, but some questions before I make a final decision.
I have been a HTC user and always tried to give Samsung a chance but after a time the UI got so laggy, it turns me back to HTC with Sense.
This phone will be my Company/job phone and I don't want to make software every month to get it smooth again.
Have Samsung addressed the lag in Touchwiz? Do you have noticed any lag or slowdowns? For me the lags have always started and got worse after some weeks.
Any suggestions or help will make my decision easier.

I've been using it for like 3 weeks now and I never noticed any lag even once! What I've read about is that Samsung is using extensive RAM management so if you open too many applications together, when you switch back to older applications, it reloads instead of resuming the session, never happened to me though but I don't keep much applications open at one time (may be 10 or so at most). You are right, the android devices are always fast when you take it out of the box and gradually start showing lags after a while (specially Samsung devices). However, I have more than 50 applications installed ( I use premium apps only, don't go for apps that load adds) including FPS games, Social Media, Podcasts, Utilities, etc. etc. and didn't notice any lag at all even if I don't kill any background application for days (I tried that). Even with 3 Gigs of RAM, I heard that S6 and S6 Edge doesn't show any lag so I'm assuming S6 Edge+/Note 5 with 4 Gigs of RAM would be better anyway. If you're thinking of getting it for Job/Business purpose, I don't see any problem at all with it.

Thank you mate, it sounds promising.
What is the phone you have used before and can compare with?
for my part, i have used long times :
samsung galaxy S - S2 - S3 - S4
samsung galaxy note 2 - 3 - 4
lg g3
Htc one M8
iphone 4S - 5S - 6plus
And now my new galaxy s6 edge plus !
I can tell you, it's the first time i have the feeling of the smooth experience of an iphone, or htc one m8 in my hands with samsung
Impressive, really (50 apps, premium or not installed)
Imo you can close your eyes and go for it

My daily driver was Note 2 - No phone could beat the battery life of this one
I've used S2, S3, Nexus 4 and Note 4. Never noticed much lag on Note 4 either, but with S6 Edge+, its even faster and responsive (or may be I tell that to myself since I spent $900 on it). Either way, if the budget isn't a constraint, this is a phone to go for this year!

How long have you been with your Edge+?
If it is as smooth as M8 or better i will definitely buy it.
One week only, because it's avaible in france since one week
i will see with some weeks,
but the difference its notable if i compare with the feeling of the firsts weeks of the phone i quote
I was a M8 user for a long time. I wouldn't say it's smoother than HTC (ARHD) but you won't notice any lags on Edge+ As for the battery I used to get around 7 hour SOT on my M8 (Custom kernel & Custom ROM) On here i'm still unrooted I get around 5:30 minutes SOT with texting and few YouTube etc. considering the higher resolution and higher screen resolution it's only natural.
Reassured you won't regret getting S6 Edge+
I will wait two weeks to see if the slow downs will be reported. It's promising to hear no lags, but they usually comes after some weeks.

get note 5 or s6 edge+ plus, better then 3Gb ram.
