hey guys im new to the g1 game...and i still have my sidekick data plan...i was wonder if theres anyway of using the same data plan with the g1
no. tmo closed the data loophole a loooooong time ago. you have to get an android data plan.
damn that sucks :\
em i able to use it with a prepaid voice and no text or data just use wifi
yea you can use wifi with the phone anytime.
you can get g1 data with flexpay also, but if you wanna use any data outside of wifi you need the android plan, theres no way out of it if your with Tmobile .

Wow its all there at t-mobile.com why are you comming here to ask about plans and rates?
sheesh
even better, dial 611 from your Tmobile phone and they'll answer all your questions there.
is it possible to use the Evo with 3g connection only. because i do not have 4g in my area
My understanding is that Sprint won't allow you to buy it without the $10 added.
But some people have called customer support and the reps were saying if they didn't have it in their area, then they wouldn't have to pay for it? But they could be wrong here since Sprint's announcement was fairly clear on that requirement. They are pushing hard for their 4G service and it makes sense since they invested in it.

As stated numerous times in the past, the phone allows you to either chose to search 4G networks, and if no connectivity, connect to a 3G network.. OR... Select it to use only a 3G connection.
The Evo will work fine in a 3G network.

At this current time, you will pay +$10 a month for having an Evo activated on your account (4G or not). What they're saying is because this device will constantly be pulling data, you'll need to pay extra for that data... It's they're way of weaseling out of saying, "you'll be paying for WiMAX"..
However, with your $10, the 3G cap on data will be moved from 5Gb to unlimited.
I'm almost positive that the 5GB data cap on 3G access remains in place. So you get unlimited 4G but you're still stuck at 5GB access through 3G. The plan details I've seen show the 5GB limit for 3G AND show no cap on 4G.

The 5GB cap stays in place for some of Sprint's 3G services. With the +$10, you are allowed unlimited 4G/3G.
So basically, they allow you to go over 5GB, except for: X, Y, and Z (etc)
So, what are the excluded services from the 5G limit?

Asking the obvious question, or maybe not so obvious. What are those "except for X, Y, and Z (etc)" services?
Anyone have a breakdown or a link (straight from the horse's mouth as it were) to verify this?
Wait, so there's a 5GB/mo. cap on EVDO rev.A data (3G) on the EVO??
My Hero doesn't have that now.. why would they start a cap? I use ~20GB a month at least.

You should be getting overage charges then or you are a liar.
you know, people keep saying there is a 5gb cap on 3g data right now on an everthing plan, but the only thing I've seen the 5gb cap referred to with is the overdrive and other data-only plans. I've never seen in writing any cap on 3g data with the everything data or everything plans. I think this is a misconception, but let's get a link to show it.
One thing to be aware of is this. One of the tech sites that tested the EVO said that if you're in an area without 4g coverage then you'll want to make sure you turn the service off on the phone or it will drain your battery fast.

All of my lines have unlimited 3g, including the 4 aircards that we have. We are on a business account, though. I think that is the difference.
If you go get a new regular account now, you are likely limited to 5GB/month on phones or aircards. If you are on an old plan or a business account, you might have unlimited.
I had an iPhone4 before I got my atrix and I had unlimited data on my iphone, so I bought my atrix without a contract in order to keep that data plan. I received the following text message this morning:
Did you know an eligible data plan is required for your 4G smartphone? Pls call 611 to select a plan and establish your 4g data connection today
Right now i am beyond angry because it seems like they are just trying to take away my unlimited data. The reason I say this is because the iPhone 4 does the handshaking to get true HSUPA and my phone does not. Therefore I am paying for a plan with a service that doesnt even exist, where my original plan (for the iphone 4) actually covers HSUPA. Does anyone know a way around this? I definitely dont want to lose my unlimited data. Is there anyway to get out of my contract? I would just as soon switch carriers before giving into paying for a crappy data plan (no offense to anyone who has the plan, you just didnt have the option ) on a crappy carrier.
Thanks for the help in advance.
go on their website att.com
you can actually select an unlimited 4g plan i m pretty sure
pick it and report back
I switched from iPhone unlimited to Android unlimited - they will let you do that. But you will not get HSUPA until the phone is updated.

They don't want the unlimited plans out there. The are going to force all non I-phone users to go to tiered plans. Once they take it off, you will not be able to get them to give it back either. If you don't go with the tiered plan, when u use the non iphone device, they will throttle your throughput at 2 gb. It is a horrible decrease in speed. Still have unlimited, only it is extremely frustrating when you hit the 2 gb limit. Remeber, in AT&T's eyes, it's not about you.

Yeah, it almost makes me want to switch to a tiered plan and just pay the $10 for an extra GB if I need it and avoid the throttling. It's quite frustrating. Makes me really want to switch to Sprint.

I've been using my old iPhone unlimited data plan since last year when I picked up the Nexus One. I am still using my unlimited data plan with my Motorola Atrix. My speeds aren't throttled (except HSUPA which is NOT due to me being on an unlimited plan) and I have gone above 2GB several times since switching to Android and have not been charged for it, penalized, or had my speeds throttled.
OP: AT&T will let you keep your unlimited iPhone data plan for your Atrix. I have it, many others on this forum have it.

it's most likely because you didn't switch your current data plan to a non-iphone smartphone plan. they are different plans in the way that they handle data. you can keep your unlimited when switching across data plan types (i.e. i went from BB data plan to regular smartphone unlimited). but since you didn't switch it over, they flagged you since your IMEI gives up that you are no longer using an iPhone.

I'm sorry but I keep laughing about this. It's just funny it is being referred to as "non-iphone plan".
That should be Apple's new slogan:
"Because if you don't have an iPhone, you have a non-iPhone"
I have unlimited...
When I went to the AT&T store last week to get my Atrix, I specifically asked them if we would have to get a new plan for 4G, or could we keep our grandfathered unlimited plan from my iPhone. She told me there was no extra charge, and gave me a 4G sim card to boot! I am not in a 4G area, so I won't know if I will get charged or not, but the store rep told me that even if I used 4G, I wouldn't have to pay any other extra fees.
Unlimited data plans are also for 3g ONLY! Not sure if that was mentioned. If you lucky enough to live in an area where H+ is live you have to go to the 2gb or 4gb data plan to get those speeds, which right now are barely faster than 3g download and the upload is horrible.
You also didnt have to buy the phone out of contract. I bought mine with my upgrade for $200 and was grand fathered over too my 3g data plan which is called the Smart phone unlimited.
Verizon with there 17-20mb download on there LTE network is looking pretty good now. But thats still not even live in my area so it doesnt madder.

I have no idea what that "4G" sim is going to do for you considering it won't be needed until AT&T rolls out LTE. The so-called "4G" that the Atrix uses (HSDPA+) is still a 3G technology and 3G sim cards work on it.
I just checked my bill and it says that my current data and messaging plan is set to expire on 04/07/2011. I can get a Smartphone Unlimited data and 1500 messaging for the same price. Haven't made any change yet. Will call AT&T Monday and see what happens.
Hey guys just upgraded to Atrix liking it so far! Never had unlimited data before but couldn't justify having it without unlimited data so been researching the current loophole and just wanted to share what I found out.
1) You must have an iPhone 2G, and a sim card that has never been registered to an iPhone 2G before
2) Hard reset the iphone, put in your simcard, and register the iPhone 2G in iTunes. You will be asked to confirm you agree to $20/month unlimited 2g data + 200 text messages.
3) Check online account to see if plan went through, or call 611 and confirm.
4) Find a CSR that will change your Iphone 2g plan to unlimited smartphone personal. I tried over the phone multiple times and they kept on saying they couldn't do it since the unlimited plan didn't exist before June 2010. I was about to give up but went to a retail location and the guy did it on his computer.
5) Enjoy your unlimited data!
NOTE: Whatever you do DO NOT let them change your data plan off the iPhone data plan. If you lose that plan you need a new simcard and to start over. I think I may have had more difficulties cause I am on a business account, but it still worked!

Does it stay $20/month...?
what you are doing is making your phone an Iphone 2g.
making your phone an Iphone 2g gives you the unlimited 2g data (that comes with 200 texts as well) for $20.
Our in store systems allow us to go from unlimited 2g $20 to the unlimited 3g/4g data for $30 giving you unlimited data to your atrix/inspire/captivate if you didnt have it before.

Or you can "request" unlimited data with customer service on a new 2yr contract upgrade or new you have to do it through customer service and it might take a few calls Ive been able to add it without a problem on 4 lines last weekend. If you have 2g/3g data on the device you may experience service issues more awkward than normal by using this method in the OP I had a 3g unlimited on my main line and upgraded without change and pages barley loaded with full bars, this is not recommended to use the iphone data plan.
Will update with the feature code and name as soon as I can.
Would this work with an iPhone 3g? My friend has one lying around I could probably borrow to swing this. Also wondering about the ability to get unlimited texts.
edit: And I'll probably try the whole, calling customer service until I get what I want, plan soon.

No it won't work for a iPhone 3G. The reason this works for the original iPhone is that the only option for the phone is unlimited data. The 200 text messages has no affect on you if you have family messaging unlmited etc. Even if you have unlimited text you can always call back in to get it added back on.
So i tried to do the trick with an Iphone 2G, I checked online to verify and i think it went fine. Also online it gives me an option to change my Iphone Data plan to the Smartphone Bundles (1. SmartPhone Personal Unlimited Data with 1500 Message for $39.99 2.SmartPhone Personal Unlimited Data with 200 Messages for $35.00 3. Smartphone Personal Unlimited Data for $30)
Should i keep the Iphone Data plan or change it to the SmartPhone Personal plans?

Option 3 is a current unlimited smart phone data plan for the device, its thinking you had it and changed devices use this option so that way the data plan will work correctly for the device. You'll still have $30 unlimited data aswell.
If you are getting the option for smartphone personal unlimited that is the correct data plan for the atrix. iPhone plan doesn't support 4G as far as I know, if that ever happens.
This trick is more common for iPhone 4 users, where once they plug the sim back into the iPhone 4 the system automatically detects it is not a 2G device within a few hours and auto upgrades them to the $30/month iPhone data plan with a text messages alerting the customer. Chances are you will not be able to stay on the $20/month plan so I'd switch before AT&T realizes you are using a 2G iPhone data plan on an Atrix.
I should be good if i change it to the SmartPhone Personal Unlimited Data with 1500Message for $39.99 right?
Yes, It's still a smartphone unlimited data plan!
it's giving me this error when i try to process it.
What should i do now? call customer service?

You are never limited to 200 texts even on the original $20 iphone plan. You can still add a text plan on top of it. It just uses your 200 and then starts using whatever else you have on plan.
But when you move to the $30 plan you lose the texts anyway.

With AT&T, the nexus 4 unlocked will not require a data plan because AT&T does not have that phone imei number in their system or database. I used an unlocked nexus s before with no data, so this will be the same. Even if you want data it'll be only $15 unlimited HSPA+ or $20 unlimited data and text since it'll be considered a standard phone.
I'm on AT&T's HTC One X without data plan. You would just call them with a dumb phone saying you sold your smartphone, and they will take off the data plan for ya. Once they take it off, you would insert the sim back in to your phone.

But if they ever did add them they could detect the IMEI then they would change your plan. I do see on their website it is technically possible to do this and comes out to 70 a month at the cheapest, but is it really DC-HSPA+ or some downgraded version of it?

Why not use $45 Straight Talk unlimited talk/text/data (which uses AT&T) and not fuss with AT&T at all?
