[Q] Rebuild Downloads app file list following factory reset? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is no big deal but...
After a factory reset (via recovery), the file list in the Downloads app is wiped, despite the files still being present in sdcard/Download.
Is there a way of getting the app to rebuild its list? I have tried clearing app data but this just cleared down the list again.
This is on a nexus 4 running LPV79 but applies to any android version I think.
Ta!

I don't think it's possible.

[Q] Reset Data for an app

I can't figure out how to reset an app's data on the nook touch. On a standard android device, going to Manage Applications and selecting any app gives you the optiosn for clearing defaults, cache, and clearing data. Clearing the data is essentially the same as uninstalling the app and reinstalling it fresh.
On the nook simple touch, there is no option for clearing the app data. When you go to the app, there are options for uninstalling, clearing cache, clearing defaults, and force stopping, but it is as though B&N specifically removed the ability to clear out the data.
Does anyone know of a way to clear out the data manually? It would be nice to be able to do it on the nook itself, but I'm fine with adb.
In the end, I could always uninstall and reinstall, but that is a hassle, and I would have to back up the apk beforehand or re-download it.
You need NookColorTools for that.
I might be wrong tho as I don't currently have it installed
I do have the NookColorTools app installed. That's how I got to the manage applications menu in the first place. But the particular option for resetting the data is missing. Other than that, the screen looks exactly the same as a standard android screen for managing an app.
Could it be missing because nook touch is running android 2.1 and that feature was added on 2.2? I only have 2.2 and 2.3 with which to compare.
Ah oh well, I take that back then
The app data can be found in /data/data so you can accomplish what you want quite easily with adb.
Thanks, I figured it had to be something simple like a directory or a file.
I could probably clear out the directory using es file explorer; no need to involve the desktop.

[Q] Strange issues with my storage...?

Hi all, first time asking a question on Nexus 4
Days ago I decided to upgrade CM10.2 from an earlier nightly (build number JSS15Q) to a newer one (JLS36C), so I dirty flashed and everything seemed fine at first, but:
1) When I connect my N4 to the PC, it links up in MTD mode, I can read, copy, rename and delete contents from it, but I just can't put anything into it. It says something like "device is offline or has stopped responding". I thought it was a random issue so I ignored it.
2) One day later, a nightly with build number JLS36G dropped, and I want to back up my data with Titanium Backup before I do a clean flash. I knew previously that to use TiBu on 4.3, the backup folder has to be manually changed, and this worked for me before. This time, however, even after changing folders, TiBu still reported "insufficient backup space" no matter what I do.
3) Yesterday I wanted to upgrade some softwares on the phone, but many installs fail with "out of space" alert, while I confirmed that I have plenty (5GB+) internal storage left.
4) And today I am using Root Explorer to manage files. I just want to move a file to another folder. I created the folder with success, but pasting operation failed, still because of "not enough space". The same happens for CM's File Manager.
Now I'm out of ideas. The best bet is to start over from a clean flash, but since TiBu is unusable, I will lose all my SMS/call log, which I can't swallow. I'd be very grateful if anyone can tell me what's behind all these issues, or/and can teach me how to back up SMS/call log with a file manager. Thanks in advance
***EDIT***: I figured out how to manually backup/restore my SMS/call log, and went on to do a clean install, but even after a clean install, Root Explorer still reports insufficient free space. I can install softwares normally, though.

are you sure you have 5GB storage left or available?

I'm pretty sure of that. I have 7.6GB files on the phone (calculated by copying all files out and checking their size using Windows), so free space should reasonably be 5GB. All softwares on the phone report this value too.

Uhh, anyone? This sinks so fast

Exactly what method did you use to 'clean install' ?

Wipe cache, dalvik, data, system (yeah I'm not that noob-ish to forget this), and install the downloaded package. I didn't install any mods after that. Clean enough, I guess.

An update to this situation: I think that using a factory image I might be able to "clear" the partitions and hoprfully revive my storage, but when I tried to back up all my contents in storage to PC using MTP connection, it got stuck at "calculating time needed for copying files" or sth like that. I have ~3GB of (unsynced, of course - I'm in China) music and some precious data I don't wanna lose, and at this size I couldn't back them up on the clouds. What to do now?

How to clear dalvik cache without recovery

Open root explorer. Go to /data/dalvik cache. Select all files in the folder and delete them. Reboot immediately. Stuff will get very unstable till you do.
This will re optimize the system after all the changes you have been making.

Similar to this, is thr a way to clear cache partition without recovery mode?
What is the purpose of doing this? Will this clear my settings or default programs?
Adversely, I have one default program I would like to clear but it does not show up on the default app list... can I clear this one manually? Namely I want to switch back to using Svoice vs Google Voice and no matter what i do I can switch it back. Turning on Svoice under settings does nothing.
Thanks for the great info
Thanks for the helpful tidbit.
question here
if i clear my dalvik cache( with not the intentions to install new rom...just cleaning junks) will my personal data be saved?
why just don't use one of app : https://play.google.com/store/searc...sp=CAFiDQoLY2xlYXIgY2FjaGV6AhgAigECCAE=&hl=en
So cache partition stores all these settings which can be deleted from settings->apps? or it's maybe something like temp in Windows?
Whether will be deleted apps settings after wiping cache partition?
edit. I found.
None settings deleted. It just support's faster lauching of most used apps. After wiping, few lauching of the app restores previous condition of executing. May fix errors during opening some app, due to some overloads of this memory.
Because dalvik cache stores fragments of compiled code of an installed apps, and can be just deleted for restore some performance of system (it is restored after reboot).
Especially these wiping these two - dalvik and partition cache, is sometimes practised after installing lots of apps, to improve performance, maybe some errors.
Correct me if something's wrong.

"files" app doesn't start anymore

Hi,
Since a couple of weeks now every time an app tries to invoke the "files" app to allow picking a file or selecting a destination I see the files app appearing for a fraction of a second, but then seems to die or get terminated.
Didn't change anything since a while on my op2, so far I haven't figured out what happened at a certain point to cause this.
Anyone else ran into this problem? Any idea how to fix it? I tried to clear data and cache of the files app, force stop, rebooting, restoring a backup wit titanium backup. No change.
Rooted op2 with latest oxygen os (3.0.2)
ok I sort of "solved" the problem by disabling the "files" app from TB -- so now I'm given the choice of picking another file manager.
For me it was the Box app that somehow made my Files Manager app crash. I removed it and it is back to functional.

Factory reset

What exactly happens on the phone when factory resetting?
I recently installed an apk that I eventually found out to be virus/malicious scripts. :crying:
I've been decompiling the app and can see that it changes WebView settings, adds on screen press actions and keyloggers, grants access to internal and external storage, adds files to /data/data and much more.
From what I understand in the code it also added a checker that checks for boot completed commands to run scripts on phone startup.
I noticed after having installed the app that a grey screen popped up all the time interfering with what I was doing, but since uninstalling the app and factory resetting my phone that doesn't happen.
I'm afraid some scripts like the keylogger and files in /data/data might still be there.
Does a normal factory reset in recovery mode fix this or do I need to reflash the original samsung software?
My phone is not rooted and bootloader is still locked.

A factory reset restores a device to it's original software configuration. Any software customization is overidden in this process. Custom Scripts and Keyloggers are scrubbed, you don't need to flash the original firmware.
unless you somehow have your /system mounted and writable (which is unlikely possible) and that particular malicious app put something there, you are safe after a factory reset as it will wipe all your /data/data /storage /cache etc.
if you're still not sure just flash the whole original firmware
