Hi all, first time asking a question on Nexus 4
Days ago I decided to upgrade CM10.2 from an earlier nightly (build number JSS15Q) to a newer one (JLS36C), so I dirty flashed and everything seemed fine at first, but:
1) When I connect my N4 to the PC, it links up in MTD mode, I can read, copy, rename and delete contents from it, but I just can't put anything into it. It says something like "device is offline or has stopped responding". I thought it was a random issue so I ignored it.
2) One day later, a nightly with build number JLS36G dropped, and I want to back up my data with Titanium Backup before I do a clean flash. I knew previously that to use TiBu on 4.3, the backup folder has to be manually changed, and this worked for me before. This time, however, even after changing folders, TiBu still reported "insufficient backup space" no matter what I do.
3) Yesterday I wanted to upgrade some softwares on the phone, but many installs fail with "out of space" alert, while I confirmed that I have plenty (5GB+) internal storage left.
4) And today I am using Root Explorer to manage files. I just want to move a file to another folder. I created the folder with success, but pasting operation failed, still because of "not enough space". The same happens for CM's File Manager.
Now I'm out of ideas. The best bet is to start over from a clean flash, but since TiBu is unusable, I will lose all my SMS/call log, which I can't swallow. I'd be very grateful if anyone can tell me what's behind all these issues, or/and can teach me how to back up SMS/call log with a file manager. Thanks in advance
***EDIT***: I figured out how to manually backup/restore my SMS/call log, and went on to do a clean install, but even after a clean install, Root Explorer still reports insufficient free space. I can install softwares normally, though.

I'm pretty sure of that. I have 7.6GB files on the phone (calculated by copying all files out and checking their size using Windows), so free space should reasonably be 5GB. All softwares on the phone report this value too.

Wipe cache, dalvik, data, system (yeah I'm not that noob-ish to forget this), and install the downloaded package. I didn't install any mods after that. Clean enough, I guess.

An update to this situation: I think that using a factory image I might be able to "clear" the partitions and hoprfully revive my storage, but when I tried to back up all my contents in storage to PC using MTP connection, it got stuck at "calculating time needed for copying files" or sth like that. I have ~3GB of (unsynced, of course - I'm in China) music and some precious data I don't wanna lose, and at this size I couldn't back them up on the clouds. What to do now?
Related
The flash storage on my nexus 7 seems to not be rewriting like it should, when i pull it up in Windows i can see and delete things from the MTP interface. But when i use a file manager (OI File Manager) i can see the files once more and get an error when i attempt to delete them. i have done the Backup & Reset option within android after attempting a full data reset in ClockworkMod Recovery. At this point i am scratching my head. i am downloading another rom and will flash and post what i get from that.
Anyone else have this strange issue?
I've noticed this as well, anything I delete with ES File Explorer still shows up when it's plugged into my macbook but isn't actually accessible, I'm still on the stock ROM.

Nope, not even rooted, not really a big issue since I mostly use airdroid to transfer files but it would be nice to fix it.

The next thing i am going to do is return to stock, a complete re-flash to see if it empties the storage, I am posting all my theories so that anyone with the same issue could easily follow.
Success!
Using Wugfish Nexus Toolkit, my problem appears to have been solved. whether it is a perminant fix or not has yet to be known.
Yesterday as I was trying out games that were compatible with my new bluetooth controller, I tried downloading The Dark Knight Returns (since it was a compatible game and I had purchased it when it was on sale some months back on the Play store). Well, apparently I did not have enough space to install the game unfortunately. So when it seemed as if it was near it's finish downloading, there was an error message that was on the status bar that let me know I did not have enough space. So the file did not finish downloading or installing. When I exited the install, i noticed that the storage space error was still present. So I restarted the phone. Still had the same error message and very minimal storage available when I checked the internal storage. I cleared the cache of the Play store, tried clearing dalvic cache on Titanium (wasn't sure if that'd work) and also looked in Root File Explorer for any files that may have been installed by the game. Couldn't find any files so I was unsure where they were located, but the storage was still low. I uninstalled one more app, went back to the play store, tried to continue installing, and it finished install this time. Then I quickly deleted the game and my storage space was back to normal. My question is this. Is there any way in the future where I can delete this data without having to complete an install? I am rooted on JB 2.1.1. I have Titanium Backup, Root Explorer, and some other tools. This storage error has happened on a couple different occasions and I'm wondering if there is still some partially downloaded app data still on the phone somewhere using up space. I have been unsuccessful in my search for an answer to what seems to be a fairly simple problem, but then again maybe I'm not looking in the right place. Any help would be great!
Thought this would be an easy one that somebody would have solved. No?
Sent from my XT907 using xda app-developers app
I would assume its partial download data... No idea how to fix it other than guesstimating your free space and how much the app needs tho...
Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk 2
I'm going to try to do that, but my estimation of available space is not always correct since some apps require more space than necessary to install. I'm referring more to what has already been done so that I can remove anything that may currently be partially installed or downloaded.

Unable to download certain apps says " insufficient storage available" this is just some apps and there is sufficient storage as I don't have many apps. Also now I keep getting a notification "an application requires your attention" and it's google play services saying it needs an update when I install it it says "insufficient storage available" this started happening after I update to mf9 from the rooted older version. Also my phone now instead of taking only seconds to boot now takes like 2 minutes...
I'm on 4.2.2, mf9, rooted with cf root and I've only done a couple mods hotspot, camera ....

how would I go about doing that?
Go to cwm and go to backups and restore. Find an option that says delete backups.
Delete every backup and then make a fresh new one.
How big are your backups, generally?

I downloaded lucky patcher to see if it would work and clear the cashe but it did nothing. I can download any new app just can't update some.
The most space being used is the "system memory" which is using 6gb of data then the next one is apps but that's just 1gb

Try this old post I wrote but it seemed to work for a buddy of mine recently. Couldn't hurt to try.
I had this exact problem right after doing the hotspot mod off qbkings site. Eventually after clearing cache and resets I couldn't get the phone to make it through boot into Android. It was giving me google.transport errors or something. I gave up and ODINed the stock rooted mf9 rom back to it. Phone is fine now, has been for a week or more, but I'm leary of trying to hotspot mod again...although I really need it.

Your first problem was using qbkings site for files instead of getting them from the xda forum where the instructions and files are the correct ones. Almost all problems with the hotspot mod are caused by either installing the wrong file or a bad download of that file. You MUST know whether you are "ODEXED" or "DEODEXED", after you know that, then you need to make sure you know what firmware you are on, MF9, MDL, MDC. Once you have that info, you go to crawj's thread in the development section and download the correct zip file and install in recovery. If you matched the correct file with your firmware and odexed condition than you will not have any problems. I can't believe how many people rely on these how to videos that are usually so out of date that they are dangerous to follow.
Spoken like a true know it all...thanks.
Stock rooted MF9 ROM using the MF9 odexed version services files.
Xfered files manually via ESfiles. Causes issues with new installs...
I don't have a custom recovery to flash from. I odexed the ROM in there.
and alot of times, if not most, qbking references the original files on xda.
Try this!

Delete the Folder 'lost+found' in the system storage.. Works under CM 10.2
Use lucky patcher.
It shows insufficient storage because some file of the app already exists in your sdcard.(if you had installed the app before and removed)
By using lucky patcher, It automatically finds the unused .odex file and deletes it. You can then install the app successfully without any error

Hello everybody,
Please forgive me if I’ve been not able to find a correct answer to my question searching in the forum…. bun now I’m going mad, so I come with the question (on my LG G2 D802 32Gb, 1x month old, rooted with Kingo, stock ROM, w/out TWRP):
Hello,
My problem is that with my LG-G2 32Gb (model number LG-D802), only rooted, with stock rom, and only a few apps installed, I’m no longer to install applications, as the system reply with “insufficient space” error message.
Actually I’ve got removed most of the images, and no MP3 are left in the handy, but even if 20Gb on 25Gb are still free (please let me know how to get a detailed view of the used space/directories, and I’ll post it here) I cannot use them to install/update applications.
I’m able to upgrade some apps from Google store, but most of them are files below 5Mb…. Applications downloaded from Firefox, or newer install from Google Store, or applications bigger than 5Mb brings in the error message.
Please help me, I’m getting crazy!
Please do not hesitate to contact me for any question.
Best regards,
Marco.
Can someone help me please?
Thanks in advance,
Marco.

Which folders are containing cache of play store and play services?
I'd prefer to avoid a full wipe but...... is there any way to backup applications, their settings, system setting and so on, ir order to restore all of them after a full wipe in order to get back the phone with all my items, but without the insufficient space issue?

Using SD Maid i've been able to clean several cache/unused/lost megabytes...
Now Apps/Downloaded indicates 4.6gb used on 20gb, but still cannot install some apps.... .
I don't mean deleting some folder from internal storage. I'd just suggest to go to settings and from there delete the data of those as I suggested. Also try to delete your google account and add it again.

erm so you had 5gb used before and now sd maid deleted something and now you have 4.6gb free ?
can you post a screen shot ? and then take x-plore or (or some other file manager that can do that) and long press sdcard and select properties. its gonna tell us how much stuff you have on your "sdcard"
use a file size tool. Forget which one it was, but you can get all files shown with size and sort them by size wherever they reside. Then you can google which is causing this.
I wager its a logfile thats dramatically increased. edit this one maybe: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gridsizefree

It starts to be tricky somehow....
Uninstalled old version of Whatsapp, than installed the latest sized 10Mb. (downloaded to download directory with Firefox), and everything went ok.
Downloaded (to download directory with Firefox) an application sized 11Mb, and installed with no issue at all.
Uninstalled gps program Navigon (now in settings/application/installed brings 3,6Gb used on 21Gb free)
Downloaded (from Google store) an application sized 5.0Mb, and error message pops up.
Downloaded (to pc, than moved do download folder) application above sized 5.0Mb, and error message pops up, so i suppose it depends not from the file size, but somehow from the application (i suppose the .apk file will be exploded to a folder that allows not enough space).
Downloaded (from Google store) an application sized 5.0Mb, and error message pops up.
Downloaded (from Google store) an application sized 5.0Mb, and error message pops up.
Downloaded (independently from folder) an application sized 1.26Mb, and error message pops up.
Downloaded (independently from folder) an application sized 13.0Mb (10x times bigger than application above) without issues!!!
Any idea on what's going on in my crazy G2 32Gb?
You could try to copy everything from internal memory to computer and format your internal memory. But I don't know about formating with a pc as I've only done it with twrp :/

All of these things were taken care of before I put together the post. I checked the unknown sources, wiped cache for google play services, also set to R/W for root explorer. I have also tried to clear cache on google play store and tried a older version. Went to into recovery and wiped dalvik and cache, then rebooted and no change. Also wiped everything but internal storage and reinstalled everything with no change. Thanks for looking into the post though! Any other help would be greatly appreciated!
If you have any backups, I'd suggest you restore them
I just tried a clean install of Pure Nexus rom 12-1 and Pure Nexus gapps with no other apps installed or changes to settings and its still the same results
I have also came to find out that I cant move files around when connected to a PC on MTP mode. BUT I did find that I can move and delete files all I want in recovery TWRP. It seems to be only a problem when booted up and running that wont allow anything. But when in recovery its doesn't? Any insight would be GREATLY Appreciated!

Followed the instructions in section 9 of this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/guides-how-to-guides-beginners-t3206928. Also did not wipe internal storage. Yes, but do not just throw your files back onto your device.
Do as indicated below, or as close to this as possible...this assumes that you've properly backed up your files, and ready to nuke...
1. Either dive into TWRP, or via fastboot (or a toolkit like Wugfresh), wipe your internal memory
2. Factory reset your device
3. Install whatever rom you want
4. Only copy the contents of your folders, NOT the folders themselves.
Item 4 is critical, inasmuch as your device automatically recreates folders on your phone, including downloads, etc.
The folder labeled camera inside the folder labeled "DCIM" only gets created after you've taken a photo...so you can see why just throwing folders and files back to your phone creates a hot mess.
One drawback of using TWRP is that when restoring files from your computer to your device, they'll have a date of 1970 or something similar...the upside is, of course, is convenience and speed.
Good luck!

Click to collapse
You have an alternative...rename the folders on your computer to something like "downloads2" or something similar, and just drag the entire folder.
But yes, do not, under any circumstances, copy the folder of the same name.

I'm a weird one and always eipe my internal storage. When I came from stock to this I doenloaded all the files I needed including the latest vender, erased all partitions under advanced wipe besides internal, then flashed the img's and zips "Purenexus and gapps" then formatted internal. Been doing it this way for years and have yet to ever have a bad flash or problems. Cant say the same for people trying to keep their stuff. I always say if it is important, back it up. I always put my pictures on the pc before I flash roms. But that's just me. I don't want files left from the previous OS because i've just seen problems arise because of it.
great job mic and jrb...
