Font getting clipped on incallui - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I find with almost all fonts (even included ones from Samsung) that there is clipping of the font where it says "dialing" etc. when I am making or receiving a call. I am currently using a segoewp flipfont that looks great everywhere else and works fine on the incallui of my S3 that is also using KitKat. I'm guessing it's a long shot but has anyone figured out a way around this or am I stuck trying to find another font that works? I really don't want to change from the segoewp font. I have tried a different version of segoewp and have tried different font sizes and tried adjusting DPI and font scale for incallui using xposed app settings mod but no dice.

That is a pretty minor flaw that would not concern most people very much. My point being, even if Google or Samsung are aware of it, it would be a very low priority for them to fix.
Choices? You could search and see if a Themer has noticed and corrected it already. Submit a bug report and wait for Google to eventually update it. Find a different font that doesn't clip or ignore the clipping. Or find a tutorial on theming and fix it yourself. Or buy me a kilo of decent coffee and I'll correct it for you.
You'd need to decompile the package and edit the cell spacing or padding. Probably in the xxhdpi drawable dimens.xml file.

Yeah it's probably something I will have to live with for now. My OCD can drive me nuts sometimes. Kills me that the exact same font works perfectly fine on my work S3. Bad enough that it spells dialing with two "L" s. First world problems I guess.

I ended up using a ttf editor called font forge to reduce the size of the font contained in the ttf file then used ifont from the play store to create a font apk from that ttf so now I have a segoewp font that looks how I want and is a bit smaller so it doesn't get clipped anymore. Nothing like a solution born out of pure nitpickiness.

I wasn't able to find that XML file but I found a file called "primary_call_info.xml" in the layout folder and was wondering if it might be the one to tweak. Any thoughts you can give would be greatly appreciated ?

Did you decompile the app? If not, that is why you didn't find the file.

Yes I am opening the incallui.apk with ES Explorer and opened the XML file in question with Axel editor and see a lot of references to padding and such. I was hoping you might be able to take a look at the XML file that I quoted to you and shed some insight about whether you thought that might be the right spot to edit.
Thank you SO much for your attitude though, very helpful.

It doesn't sound like you are decompiling the system app.
If you don't decompile it with a tool such as apktool first, you will not see the xml in question with a file browser like ES explorer.

I am exploring inside the incallui.apk with ES explorer which let's me see all the files. I went through the folders and did not see an xml file name like the one you mentioned. I did find the one I mentioned in the res/layout folder which I thought looked promising. If I can find the right XML file to edit I can use zarchiver to insert the edited file into the APK and can also use zipsigner to sign the APK if needed (at least that's my plan).

My apologies for my ignorance. I have to say it is a little confusing how you can partially extract the contents with a file explorer and not realize there is more that you aren't seeing.
I do wish that you were able to ease off on the smartass throttle just a little because it seems like you do have some good knowledge to share and could be a great help to a lot of us users here on XDA.
Anyways thanks I think.

RLToday is really easy to skin... just take a look at the xml file... it's almost self-documenting. I made something similar for my phone:

This isn't really programming. Just take a look at the skin.xml file that you get with any generic rlToday theme.
In there, you'll see tags like "text" and "image". In these, you'll see the content of the text, or the name of the image file, as well as the location of where to place this image file.
Just change these to the locations of where you'd prefer the images to be, and replace the images with whatever images you'd like (just look around these forums, or search around on the internet... or make your own if you're artistic-enough).
Please, can someone give use this theme for rltoday??

Great job on the skin...
Did you use wisbar? and if so is there a way to do it with out wisbar?
The top (the taskbar) is Wisbar 3...
The rest of it is a skin for RLToday... I'll attach the skin.xml and rltoday.ini files...
If you put the .ini file in your /program files/RLToday directory and the .xml file in your skin directory, they should work.
The skin.xml file assumes that icons are in the same folder as the xml file.
As far the "four soft buttons" (which they are not), you need to create a background image and replace the tdywater_<size>.gif files in your /windows/ directory, and then suppress the display of the actual soft buttons. That way, you can use the whole screen for your background.
... by the way, to give credit where credit's due, I started with the iPhone theme by Wajk from the rltoday skins forum...

This sound like a good workaround, but... in my /windows/ directory I have only a file called tdywater.gif, and his size is 640x480 (note that I have a QVGA screen, not VGA).
So... I don't understand what I have to do to make the soft buttons disappear.
P.S. I hope you understand me, my english is so rusted and I have to explain me with simple phrases
There are a couple of alternatives for actually getting rid of the softbuttons -- do one of those first, *after* that you can substitute the tdywater_240_320.gif file with your version.
I believe that the two main options are VJToggle (search the forums) or Wisbar Advance 3 (I *think* this has the option... I'm using VJToggle).

Little big clock!

Hi guys.
I've looked through all the clock threads and cannot find a clock that I'm happy with, mainly for 1 reason. I'm stubborn and know exactly what I want lol.
I really like the clock when it's small, like this...
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
What I really want though, is the bigger clock to look exactly like that, but bigger.
Can anyone help me out with this, either by calling me a numpty and pointing me at a clock that I've overlooked, or giving me the font (or just the name) that the small clock uses so I can make my own?
Cheers in advance guys.
John.

Nice! I hadn't thought of making the small one bigger! I was thinking of making (manila files for) a larger clock, that looks just like the smaller one.
I think that changing the files for the larger clock will give you too much space between the 2 numbers ...
But that depends on what size you want the clock to be ofcourse ...

That had crossed my mind. I am preferring the idea of making the small clock's font larger now, because you could then have a different clock for the standard large one, giving you two different styles at the flick of a finger!

Yeah and if we could find it - It would be a lot easier to edit at your leisure once we know how.
Okay, so I've found out that the font is Helvetica, and I'm just getting a copy of that. I'll try editing the manila files for the clock and see what it looks like, making the larger clock look the same as the smaller.
As previously mentioned, it may well not work, but it's worth a try.
ok... I found where to change the small clock size in 1c684cd8_manila...
But when u make it bigger it gets hidden under the Call History
I dont know if I can move that ... but I'll give it a try

Funnily enough, I was just looking at that manila file myself, but never having edited a manila file before, it was a bit overwhelming. I'll wait and see how you get on with that, whilst I try the big-clock-replacement method.
Nearly got it!!!
I've got a draft version working, with a couple of niggly problems. Here's what it currently looks like...
I need to reduce the colon slightly, as it's a tad too big, and I need to get the date and operator back in the top bar. I also need to change the "1" slightly as it looks great in the screenshot above, but doesn't look as nice when it comes after a number (as in 41).
Other than that, I've got some manila files ready to upload, but would really like to put them in a cab file. I'm happy enough editing the _setup.xml file manually to suit my changes, but don't know how to package a cab file. Could someone give me a hint on that please?

I also would like to make the "smaller" clock bigger. There is no borders around it so you can see the wallpaper better. I know there are other clear clocks out there, but I would like this also because as you can see I changed my TF3D font and the smaller clock matches the TF3D font. Thanks!

I have done a bit of reasearch but still not that sure on how to do this,
Are there any Photoshop PSD templates for themes, or a tutorial.
Can anyone please point me in the right direction for creating this theme.
Thanks.
Finally figured it out managed to port it to Desire, still not perfect needs a bit of tweaking as the ringer and media volume slide still shows green. WIP

Hi,
Thanks, I still need to figure the other bits out where its still green.
Also if you look at the last picture on the first post, the popup with Ringer Volume and incoming call volume etc is not right in the port it is still black title bar and green sliders.
Have a go and see if you can sort it, I'm going to try as well will let you know how I get on. When it's done I'm hoping to upload an update.zip for everyone who wants it.
Yeah I've just had a look and can't find the colour for the volume slider. Only reason it is orange in first screen shots is it is a stock rom and it is orange in stock roms. Htc sense roms have green sliders.
It probably is possible to change it however I'm not sure where the image is or if its in some other file.
Really nice work.

Hi mate,
I've figured it out somewhat, it is xml that controls it, I replaced the following files and it worked (see image) however as you can see on the pop up title bar where it says "Volume" the background is black it should be orange, still working on it. Also look at the third image the one that says "scanning", that little grey rectangle should be a spinning circle (don't know what happened there
I have PMed you check your messages. Cheers

The green progress is in progress_horizontal.xml in drawable. You can just take that file from ANY theme and replace it. Even from a MDPI theme, meaning ogiogi's original theme that has orange progress bars. Cheers!

Any idea on why the settings backgroud might still be blackand the wrong spinning animation.
As the theme is from a non sense rom i have a feeling some files need to be edited in com.htc.resources.apk also for your sense version. There is however a ton of image files in there. Can't get my head around it i'm pretty new to this stuff.
@igor Yeah i found that out last night. Already managed to put any colour i want in the xml now. Changed to blue and looks great for BluFrost rom.

How do you edit your xml's as I can't figure that out, I'm from a web design background. But I take it that Android xml need to be decompiled. I tried to follow Apktool but had no joy.
Any ideas?
Apktool worked for me. Once decompiled edit with notepad then re compile. The result apk didn't work for me however extracting the edited recompiled xml from the new apk then adding it to the old apk works. No idea why but its the method that works for me.

Manual edit virtual resolution (LCD Density without the app)

If you edit local.prop in /data/ to include the line "ro.sf.lcd_density=XXX" you can set the density size on boot without having to run an app or do a restart every time. Put whatever numbers you want for XXX, 160 is default and the higher the number the bigger the screen items will be. I personally like 120.
This works well with the button_bar off trick to make the notification bar the usual size while still having the buttons up top. Plus it lets you fit another 4 or so apps on the Zeam launcher bar.

I'm curious how this might affect the crappy way the archos uses wallpaper? (cutting off the bottom of of the wallpaper) Would this change the way the wallpaper is scaled?
To be honest I'm not sure if it would actually shift the wallpaper or if that is independent of the lcd density settings, but either way it won't fix the archos wallpaper issue. If you see an actual image of what a picture would have to look like for the archos to make it "fullscreen" you'd see that proportionately zooming out won't work.
http://forum.archosfans.com/viewtopic.php?f=74&t=46103&start=0
Your best bet for that is the multipicture app as much as it sucks to have to run an app just for wallpaper.
Yeah I know, I hate that damn app. Stationary wallpaper. Bleah. My favorite thing is to have scrolling wallpaper. I'm learning how to re proportion the wallpaper. I was hoping that might fix some of it. Oh well. I actually like crop wallpaper better. Just cuz I can still get my scroll on lol

"root gen8
create a file "local.prop" at /data/
add follow line.
ro.board.has_buttonbar=no"
You need root, obviously, and should install button savior. Do that and give it a shot, worst case scenario is you just delete the two "ro" lines from build.prop and local.prop and you are back to normal.
How where you able to edit the build.prod in the system fs.
I'm logged in as root but it keeps saying readonly file.
Please advice...
Try copying it to somewhere else, add the line, and paste it back in and replacing the old one.
That's not making any difference.
I su to root, superuser grants me root rights, but chmod, editing with vi, cp to /tmp edit en pasting back does not work.
Any other ideas?
Are you rebooting after you are done? To be honest, I copied it into my dropbox folder with root explorer, edited it on my linux box, threw it back in dropbox, and moved it back into /system/, but it shouldn't matter doing it another way.
In the market there are file explorers that grant root privileges. This should help you write and delete in /system/. Just remember to go into settings in the explorer and enable the root options.
XDA ICE GLACIER - THEMED / Never stock
I already have root explorer on my device, I will try this in the morning.
I tried to do it in a terminal emulator but that's what giving me te problems.
So, I tried using another file manager, but writing in the system fs is not going to happen on my archos 101.
Just to be clear I'm running the out of the box firmware/kernel that I rooted with Archangel.
When I get a chance I will start from scratch and note my steps to do this. If that doesn't work it would have to be something to do with archangel, i guess. By chance, you aren't in RO mode are you?
Just know I'm not blowing you off but it might be a day or two. I have a horrible feeling (in my mouth) I need a root canal.

Good luck at the dentist , I will keep my eye on this thread.
Archos 70it, rooted with Archangel
I just added the line "ro.sf.lcd_density=130" to the the file "local.prop" at /data/ (tanks to Jerry101) after the line ro.board.has_buttonbar=no".
It is working like a charm.
All the best

Nope /data/local.prop does the trick. No need to change build.prop.
right,
follow jerry101 at "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=940198" and add this line "ro.sf.lcd_density=130" to "local.prop" at /data/.
Cool, glad that you guys got it working but I did it using the build.prop on my 101. Odd.
Regardless, I'll edit the first post since local.prop works.

In this screenshot you may see that notification bar icons are just scaled down icons made for HDPI devices, not for MDPI. Same for app icons in theme, scaled down HDPI icons. What I want to do is to fix these graphics for our device so it will look properly.
Who can help me to do this? I am nice in graphics editing and UI design, but just a random user of Android, not a developer or pro...

Actually, MIUI was never made for any mdpi device, so all the pngs used in it are hdpi ones, the mdpi devices hv got it working by directly resizing the hdpi pngs to mdpi. You would have been able to do so by using originally made PNGs for any mdpi device by MIUI team, in your ROM, but unfortunately they didn't do so!!
The only way now is to improve those mdpi PNGs to some extent by using some graphics designing softwares, by adjusting sharpness, hue, saturation, etc. May be adobe Photoshop or similar ones can do this work.................

It's simple, just open it with 7zip or any program like that. As for putting them back together on the APK you'll need help from someone else.

Basically you said what I wrote, but rephrased it a bit.
I want to know how to extract these PNGs.
And another bug here, this time related to MiHome. Look at the cropped photo frame on attached screenshot. This is not how things done! That's bad! And some other widgets gets cropped too. I want to fix it, if somebody have any suggestions about how to do it, please, post them here.

There are two apks responsible for notifications and other UI elements-
SystemUI.apk, which is in /system/app/ and framework-res.apk, which is in /system/framework.
Extract(decompile) these apks with apk manager or any same tool. You'll find a "Res" folder in there. Inside it, there will be a drawable-mdpi folder. Here are most of the PNGs, which you can edit and correct. For both the apks, case is same. When you'll open them, you'll come to know which PNG is used where and how......
Hope that helps now!!......
