I've had my phone stolen more times than I'd like. Given the fact that I've had my phone stolen this many number of times may suggest to some that I'm careless. Well, that would be a correct assumption to make. However, I don't equate being careless with deserving to have my phone stolen by some low lying piece of koopa. Anyway, the last one was a Moto G and the thing that pissed me off was the fact that the device had achieved an equilibrium in all areas that are important; the right balance of applications, just the right battery time etc. It knew me and I knew it. We were familiar to each other and then it was ripped from my clawing hands, never to return again. At that very moment, I made a decision that never will I let another phone be stolen again (iA). So I decided to make my phone theft-proof, not theft-resistant but theft-proof. The phone in question is the Moto X.
This is how I did it. First you need the following:
- A handset whose battery cannot be removed (at least very easily like the Moto G/Nexus 5/Moto X)
- Root
- Xposed Framework
- Xposed Framework Gravitybox module
- Anti-theft app (the one that I use is cerberus https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lsdroid.cerberus&hl=en)
- Bringrr or any other bluetooth perimeter based tracker (optional but recommended)
It's a fairly straight forward procedure. I'll lay it out in steps.
Step 1:
- Buy a phone whose battery cannot be removed
Step 2:
- Root the phone
Step 3:
- Set a pattern or number lock on your phone.
Step 4:
- Install XposedFramework
Step 5:
- Download and install Gravitybox module from within the Xposedframework
Step 6:
Go into the Gravityox module from the app drawer, then go into "Power Tweaks" and then check the "Disable power menu on lockscreen" option. This ensures that when your phone is locked (assumption is that you keep your phone locked or secured), nobody can turn it off or lower the volume. This is crucial when it comes to theft. Usually when a thief steals a phone, the first thing he does is he turns it off or removes the battery or reduces the volume to zero, but if he can't do any of these then the thief has a tracker in his hands and he's in deep ****za.
Step 7:
- Install an anti-theft app. I recommend cerberus. It's very versatile and wholesome. I really like the fact that you can actually make it into a system app which means that even if the thief were to somehow turn off the phone and then turn it on again and crack your pass code or pattern lock and factory reset the phone from the settings, the cerberus app will still be there doing it's job of tracking your phone.
There's only one way of getting around this as far as I can tell but I don't think I'm going to tell you how. That would defeat the purpose of this little guide
Step 8:
- Get a bluetooth location trackr. I like bringrr. It seems to get better reviews than the others one floating out there. It's a bluetooth device that plugs into your car's cig lighter socket and connects to your phone's bluetooth. If you leave your phone in a cafe and come back to the car, the bringrr will warn you or alert you that your phone isn't with you. It also has small little tags which you can put in your wallet and then your wallet and your phone and your car, all can communicate with each other. So, it's a nice preventive measure.
Even if you disable the power menu you can just hold down the power button until it turns off.

after that if they are really good change the imei and bam

holding down the power button does turn it off but you gotta keep your finger there for a while. and I'm betting that an opportunistic thief really won't have his wits about him to figure out why the power menu isn't showing up and might freak.
and yes! these are the two flaw in this plan, the removal of the sim. however, if they insert another sim into the phone, cerberus sends a message to the designated numbers. also, imei changing IS hard and can't be done on the fly so there's a window of opportunity between the theft of the phone and the subsequent IMEI change (if there is one) to trace and recover it.
Also wiping the phone won't remove cerberus. you'll have to flash a new rom to get rid of it. so they can change the imei and whatnot but you'll still be able to trace it once they've booted it back up.
however, it'll give you and your phone a fighting chance

Just out of curiosity how many phones have been stolen from you? And how were they stolen? Maybe there's something that you change to not get your phone stolen.

Well the first phone was Iphone. The very first Iphone. It was stolen from my car while I was sitting in it. Happens a lot where I am; Pakistan. I was waiting for the light to turn green at a signal when this guy showed up on the passenger side door, and in what seemed like a flash, opened the door (which unfortunately was not locked), snatched the phone (which was lying on the passenger seat), ran around the car and on to the other side of the road where there was a guy on a bike (who I had not noticed before) revving it. The thief got on to the bike and they were gone. I had in the meanwhile only gotten out of the car and managed to shout out an expletive but it was too late by then. The phone was gone.
Ever since, I keep my car doors locked at all times.
The 2nd phone was also stolen from my car while it was parked in my garage. Probably the driver. It was a Nokia.

1. Sucks that people just walk up to cars and steal while you're in the car. But like you said windows and doors locked will help.
2. Sucks that people steal. But assholes work everywhere. But never leave your personal property unattended.
3. Keep your wallet and phone in front pockets its harder to pick pocket. Or wear pants that are not too baggy so that pick pockets cant easily get their hands in.
I'm not sure how crime is in Pakistan but it sounds worse than here in the states. But even if you can track someone, remember its not worth getting seriously hurt or worse over property.
I guess I'd add that another step no matter what theft prevention you have, is to make a backup. Once you find that great balance of perfect apps and configurations, take screen shots of your app drawer at the very least so you know what apps you had installed. Take screenshots of your home screen so you know what icons you had where for that instinctive muscle memory of unlocking and tapping email in the lower right without really looking or thinking about it.
I've never had a phone stolen, but I've bricked and wiped enough times to know that backups are important even if your phone doesn't get stolen.

Turn in android device manager with location reporting. It will track your phone down for you.

Well, all I know about crime in the States is what I see in tv shows, but yea, it's everywhere. crime and criminals that is.
I prefer keeping my phone by my side at all times....to battery sucking theft solutions.

In my opinion it's better to leave the phone without a pin because, if i were an average theft who doesn't know that much about phones, I'd just remove the accounts, the Sim card and apps. Maybe I would do a factory reset and with that I'd be happy so cerberus would survive.
Also I'd recommend you to hide cerberus from the drawer and make it only available from the dialer.

Does holding the power button for 8 seconds still turn off the device with the gravity box module disabling power? if someone could force the phone off then turning it off from the lock screen is the least of their worries.

I thought that just rebooted, similar to holding POWER and VOL DOWN for a while to simulate a battery pull on Moto devices.

I'm aware of apps like NoLock which disable the Vibrants lock screens. I was thinking about it and is there really any reason to have a lock screen? Seems like it's just an added step and a potential waste of battery. Thoughts?

Right, I was rocking them way back in the day when you could pocket dial your whole phonebook with hardware # buttons, but with the Vibrant I've never noticed messing with the hardware buttons just from it being in my pocket.
Well, actually there are a lot of benefits to having the lock screen.
- You could turn up your ringer in a situation where you need to have it on silent.
- Quickly control music without draining battery by going to the actual music app.
- Seeing what type of notifications you get without pulling out the entire UI.
There are added benefits to disabling the lock screen, but you will probably encounter enough problems to make it not worth it.

How about the fact that it's a secuirty mechanism?
No need for it. It was one of the first things I disabled.
Here's why:
-Accidentally messing it in your pocket somehow? Even if you manage to hit the power button and make it come on, it won't do anything as the screen is activated through electricity of your fingers. That's how it works. Nothing in your pocket can make it do ANYTHING, even if its on. If you REACH in your pocket and its on, then yes, you can hit something.
-Music app. SUPER easy to switch music when you have no lock screen. Simply Hit power button and swipe away anywhere on teh screen to change a song. VERY VERY useful while driving and u can't afford to look at the screen.
-Easier to respond to texts. You don't need to unlock it to do stuff now. MUCH simplifies everything but notifications are especially convinient to deal with.
-ACTUALLY saves battery. Try it. No lock screen will net you NO loss in battery life and is likely to increase it as you won't go through a locking screen every time. You quickly develop a habit of turning it off by the power key when ur done with something and turning it back on when you need it. It's instant, quick, and saves on juice.
I don't know of a SINGLE reason to keep a lock screen except for aesthetics or if you want to prevent people using your phone (in which case its a passworded lockscreen). Those are the only 2 reasons really. . .
how about to check out the time, see missed calls or texts easily because sometime the notification bar is full of notifications, and it is a great way to check the time without people seeing what you have been using in your phone and also it turns off fast so you dont have to press the power button twice.
I wouldn't take it off only because I see more advantages than disadvantages.
Just my two cents.
Better not lose your phones. No lock makes it that much easier to grab your data, regardless if you report it and the phone becomes a brick. Think of all that stuff the person who found it would be able to do. Get a list of your contacts, find the last few places you visited, make calls, etc... An exposed phone would be an identity theives dream.
And just think... you could slow them down with a simple pattern lock. Ignorant not to use that layer.
The security feature is pretty meaningless to me. I'm not ultra scared of someone finding my phone and having my friends and my weed dealers phone numbers.

Okay. Would you mind posting a copy of your contacts in this thread? Most likely not, unless of course you have zero respect for your contacts information, in which case you should let your friends know how wreckless you are being with their data.
The point is, you may not lose this phone or your next or the one after that. It is a fact that unless you take ownership of your information, you put yourself at risk of making details you consider private, public.

Well, different strokes for different folks. I'm rarely ever more than 5 feet away from phone, so I don't worry too much about the security aspect. I do turn it on if I'm going out to a bar or club or something, but otherwise the lock screen just slows me down.

..... or just don't let your kids use your phone as a toy. The lock screen doesn't keep it from going in the toilet if the kid is very young.
The lock screen strikes me as feature-creep.

Hey Folks!
I finally managed to get the Cyanogenmod 7.2 and GAPPS installed on my SD card and I want to thank one and all for their assistance. It has been running pretty well for the past week, well enough that my grandkids have managed to get me started with the Angry Birds game. I gotta watch myself playing it cause the time goes by real quick like and chores get missed. I've been reading the posts here and the answers everyone gave me when I was having trouble with my Nook. A few things have happened and I have a couple of questions about a few other.
1. Most of the time the Nook boots into Cyanogenmod with no problems, but about one out of every 6 or so times it just hangs up on boot. It tells you it is starting but just stays there, when this happens it may happen two or threee time in a row, is this common? Is there a fix I can try?
2. There seems to be some applications for a phone on Cyanogenmod, can I remove these? Is there even a way to remove them? I just wanted to kind of clean things up a bit, should I even be attempting this?
3. What applications do you more experienced users feel are a necessity for a new user to have on the Nook? Are there any applications on the Nook that a noob really shouldn't mess around with? Is there any recommended reading about using android that anyone can recommend?

1. That only happens to me on my first boot after updating my ROM, and only since I installed to internal (emmc).
2. Yeah, there's a camera app too and several other useless things. No, you shouldn't get rid of it. Some apps and Google stuff won't run if you do.
3. I have found that Android Assistant is a good noob alternative to Titanium Backup. TiBu can really let you screw things up. Android Assistant isn't as powerful but it does let you back up your apps.
For a noob learning to use power apps I have found it is best to have a particular goal in mind. If you just go looking for things to fiddle with the thing you'll learn is how to reinstall your ROM and apps.
If you don't have a dropbox account, get one. It will make your life easier and give you a place to store backups.

What part are you from? My dad grew up in Kissee Mills and Forsythe. I have cousins in Branson.
Most apps are noob friendly by design... just don't mess around with overclocking/voltage tweaking apps such as nook tweaks and setcpu unless you know what you are doing. That's the only way I can think of of how someone could permanently brick their nook. ;P
Edit: Technically, you can get rid of the phone app by a process called freezing/blocking. You can do so with gemini app manager, BUT I wouldn't just freeze things willy-nilly. Some apps, like contact storage, are required for gapps to run; though I've successfully frozen the camera and phone app without any adverse side effects. To freeze, press the menu button, go to more, then click expert mode. Then navigate to the apps you want to freeze (camera and phone), hold your finger down on them, and it will bring up a menu with an option to freeze the app. If, for whatever reason in the future, want to have this app back, you can do so by navigating to the app in expert mode, hold for the menu and unfreeze it and the app will function as normal.
Edit 2: A fix you might want to try for the boot problem would be to wipe dalvik cache. If you are using clockwork mod recovery, boot into it through recovery mode, go to advanced, and select wipe dalvik cache. Then reboot and see if the problem is gone.
Edit 3. For apps you might want to install, here's a list of apps I use:
Dolphin Browser HD- Best internet browser imo, though you might want to disable dolphin sonar to prevent it from bothering you.
Poweramp/DoubleTwist + Air Sync: These are both music players. The difference between the two is that poweramp is more manual+cheaper and gives more input options while DoubleTwist is more automatic. I personally use Poweramp because it gives you the option to play flac lossless music files, but it requires you to manually copy music files to your sd card from your computer or download them from Google play. On the other hand, DoubleTwist is more expensive, but when paired with airsync, it gives you an option to install a program on to your computer that allows you to automatically sync wirelessly as well as plugged in. It also is compatible with iTunes.
Doubletwist Alarm: Best alarm I found. Simple to use, works, can calibrate to sleep cycles, etc.
B&N Nook App: For reading books from your nook library!
Battery Monitor Widget: Allows you to closely monitor your battery as well as see if your battery is drawing more power than the charger is inputting.
Swype Beta keyboard: A very fast keyboard that allows you to swipe between letters to input words. Also, free! Google it, it's not on the app store yet since its still in beta. The website will give you instructions on how to download. What I'm using right now to type this post!
HD widgets: Very nice aesthetically pleasing widgets that tell time, weather, etc.
That's all I can think of now but I might add more later.

Leapinlar, I'm a bit north of Kissee Mills, I'm northwest of Durbin, south of H highway in Wright county. I was born in St. Louis, but mostly raised in northern Missouri and southern Iowa. My father worked as a supervisor for the railroad and we moved quite a bit for his work. I bought my property here back in 1961. It was somewhat isolated and had been clear cut by loggers and was pretty barren. I spent 6 years replanting and cleaning it up and put in a small dam on my creek for a pond. Built my home, garage, barn, tool shed, and workshop from 63 to 69. This became our permanent residence in 65. We raised 3 boys and 2 girls here and spend a happy 46 years living here until my wife passed. Will probably move to the city when I hit 80 or so, starting to get a bit difficult takin care of the place.

Nope! Just an ordinary two story farm house. It does have a wrap around front porch though and a big screened back porch. I was a regular reader of Mother Earth News back in the 70s and early 80s, guess that would make me a hippie in your reasoning. I just liked the neat projects and ideas they always had in it. Built a "Hobbit" house back in "76" for the kids and as a place for guests during hunting season. It was domed shaped but it was earth sheltered instead of out on the open; just an experiment to see if I could do it and make it work. Also built my wife a little "elf" cabin in 1987 I suspended on two - inch and a half cables over a stream that runs from a spring on the farm. It was a get away place where she could relax and write her poetry and paint.She was an extremely good artist really, especially for a farm girl with no proper training. She sold quite a few paintings at art events around Missouri, Kansas, and Arkansas.Put quite a bit of money into her savings for the kids schooling. I was, I am really proud of her. I built the cabin for her after her first bout with cancer. A heavy wind storm last summer blew an old Ash tree down on it, and crushed the cabin, but the support cables still held even after 24 years.

Back on the correct subject
DizzyDen, Thank you for your offer. May have to take you up on it some time. I'm really trying hard to muddle through this and learn it. Keeps the old brain workin and I enjoy lickin a problem. Hardest part is finding out what folks are talking about sometimes with caches and such. I kinda like to know what something does and why it does it before I mess it up.
I do have another question about power usage. I've noticed that I can power down the Nook after using it and I'm assuming that it should be totally off, but I've noticed that the battery can read half full when I shut down but later ( 8 or 10 hours) when I try to turn it back on it will be dead. I then have to recharge it to use it again. I understand or maybe misunderstand that the battery will only take so many charge cycles and I dont want to run through those cycles willy nilly since the battery isn't user replaceable and it would leave my Nook a paper weight. How do I find out what is using the power when the Nook is supposedly off? I've done some searching through settings and don't see or I'm missing seeing the setting I need to stop this.
Also how do I shut down the Sonar in Dolphin? It's a royal pain and I don't want to install google voice. Hepheastus_ said it could be disabled but I don't see a setting to do so. Being old as dirt and half blind I'm probably not seeing the setting.
GPB... one thing to note... just pressing the power button only shuts the screen down... to truly power it off... hold the power button in for several seconds... you can select power off from the menu that comes up... or simply keep holding it in and the nook will truly power off.
Can't help with the dolphin sonar question... haven't used dolphin in a while... but can re-install it if you don't get it figured out.
DizzyDen, I shut the Nook all the way down with the menu. I put a full charge on it last night and shut it all the way down at 10 pm. I turned it on this morning at 7 am and checked the battery icon and it shows about 2/3 discharged. Don't know what would be causing the battery drain or if the battery drain is only in Cyanogenmod. I am going to pull the SD card out, charge the battery up and then shut it down in the regular Nook andriod. I will let it set for 9 hours and then check it to see if the battery is down. This way I figure I will find out if it is a general problem with my Nook or if it is Cyanogenmod generated.
I'm feeling a bit foolish at the moment. I just discovered that the Q & A forum wasn't the only one with folks asking questions about the Nook. There are a couple of others that I completely bypassed. The old brain sure has been asleep on that.
I don't know how some of this stuff happens. A couple of months ago a user was complaining that even though he completely powered everything off via the menu and the charging cable was disconnected, it would wake itself up in the middle of the night. I would not think that was possible, but he swore it was happening. Maybe there is some circuit inside the nook that stays on even though it is supposed to be off. I don't know how one tests for that.
GB, experiment for us. Instead of shutting down with the menu, hard power off and see if that makes a difference. Hard powering off is holding the power button for a long time until the screen goes black.

Nope! Just an ordinary two story farm house. It does have a wrap around front porch though and a big screened back porch. As both an suggestion to your OP #3 question and the power use issue, I found that it's pretty easy to get confused as to whether the Nook has entered "deep sleep", i.e. you press the power button and the screen animates into a single white line and goes black, or it actually shuts down. I use these apps to both preserve the mechanical integrity of the hardware button and to make sure I get what I want.
Quick Shutdown (Just shuts down)

I charged up the Nook to make sure the battery had a full charge. I powered up Cyanogen and gave it a bit for everything to settle down, I then did a hard shutdown as you said. I powered on the Nook this morning after letting it sit for 10 hours and it still has a full charge on the battery. Does this indicate something isn't turning off or all of the way off during a normal shutdown?
GB, for some reason your software is not really turning it off. I recommend getting one of those software apps like the ones shumash recommended above. I personally use Nook Color Power Button Donate by Otis. There is a free version, but it only puts it to sleep. The donate version (I think it was 99¢) lets you configure several things, including making full power off the default. Like shumash said, it saves wear and tear on your physical button and works very quickly with one tap. And it was made specifically for the Color.
Another thing, something is running in the background while it is sleeping. I suspect it is you leaving the wifi on during sleep. Most people don't need that. Go to settings, wireless, wifi settings, then hit menu for advanced. There is a setting to configure how wifi behaves with sleep. Set it to 'when screen turns off'. This makes wifi sleep when the rest of the system is sleeping. That should reduce battery consumption when sleeping.
Will give the wireless setting a try tonight. I'm probably going to have to put my Nook up for a bit. Summer veggies are ready for harvest and I'm getting a mite behind. Thank you all for your help.
Haven't had a chance to try anything else with the Nook; my almost 15 year old ( in Oct. ) grandson has sort of hijacked my Nook. He's down here to help me for a bit and the second the work is done and he's cleaned up he grabs the Nook and is on Angry Birds. Guess grandpa's not as interesting and fun as he once was. May trade some produce and meat for a Nook Tablet for him so I can get my Nook Color back.:laugh:
Is there an age limit for members here on the forum? My grandson has been reading the forum and has become somewhat attached to my Nook. He's already made his own Cyanomod 7 SD card and is using it in the Nook. He makes it do more wiz bang things than I was able. He's almost 15 and pretty doggone smart and has questions about CM7. On LG G2 the default lock screen has a button "Emergency call - Press and hold". A call to 911 is dialed immediately when you accidentally press it for 2 seconds.
My 2-year-old boy has accidentally dialed 911 four times and each time 911 called me back and they'll send someone to check out next time.
To use my corporate email account I can't disable the PIN/PASSWORD lock screen. Is there a way to remove that stupid button, or change the "911" to be a invalid number?

The problem is that sometimes I placed my phone on the table - maybe just 2 minutes, and he sometimes got the chance to grab the phone and the first thing he did is to "press and hold" that stupid button.
If the phone is not locked, it is harder for him to dial 911 - but I can't disable the lock screen due to corporate's policy.

Alright, to other outsiders looking in and still wondering which phone to choose, here is a perfect example of how beautiful this G2 is, it's up to the point that even a 2 years old kid would know/realize the beauty of this phone is and choose it.
Anyway, to OP, keep out of reach of children. You can do better than that, m8.

Hey, I am looking for a technical solution here.
I know I have to keep my LG G2 out of reach of children, I've got the lesson, but unlike a gun in the previous post, we are using the phone very frequently and there are chances that you inadvertently leave the phone somewhere that is reachable by a baby.
a. We know you are looking for a technical solution but it has to be reasonable. That feature built for emergency purpose as when you are in the panic mode, you can't remember that pwd for that moment, you need to access the phone and call for help. It's there for a reason.
b. Instead of looking for a "technical solution" that virtually nowhere to be found, why don't you invest into other solutions
+ In 365 days in a year, how many times you let your kid gets to the phone? Seriously, nobody mock you but we do expect parent can do more than that. If you can't do with 2 years old kid, how would you deal with 6 years old one and later? Change your style, seriously.
+ If you really really don't care changing your style and still want it, I think you can root your phone and install the modded version of Email which does bypass the restriction. I did it when still own the SGS2-i777, I don't know there is such a modded. like that for G2.
Anyway, solutions are surely out there but the quickest solution is your control.

There is no other phone like G2 that make the dialing of 911 so easy - you may call out to 911 easily when the phone is in your pocket, or even in your own hand - many G2 users without kids are already complaining about it - the solution is to disable the PIN/PASSWORD lock screen, which for me is enforced by the security policy.
I understand a button on the lock screen for real emergency, but it's really too easy compared to iPhones or any other Android phones - they just open a dial pad for you.

I do not plan to give my phone to my kid.
Zoodles doesn't help because what I want to avoid is that when my baby accidentally reaches my phone while it is in locked mode, he can't place a 911 call easily. Even 2-step dialing is complex enough for him.
LG G2 is the only phone that "support" the 1-touch-to-911 feature.

As a parent of four, all of which have graduated High School and two from college so far, I gotta say that your solution is in parenting. Teach the crumb snatcher to keep his hands off of things that don't belong to him and be smart enough to place objects higher than two feet up. It's really not as hard as you seem to think it is.
Or maybe just quit your job, get rid of the corporate email, and watch your kid 24\7.

My D800 actually has one long touch (press and hold) then another short touch to 911 (other is 112)
So it's like 2-touch feature.

It's a button on the PIN/PASSWORD lock screen, under the password pad.
You touch it for 1-2 second and you are already connected with 911.
I would try this and if it asks to confirm for 911/Emergency Dial then you can get Pro to also add a password to dial. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vladlee.callconfirm.free
You could just make that one number password protected/confirmed if you want. Or whitelist certain numbers.

Ok, so I was hanging around with a friend today. While running, I accidentally dropped my keys. While trying to pick them up, my phone fell out of my pocket right into a pond. I immediately picked up my phone (less than 3 seconds) and tried to shut it down. What I didn't notice was that the phone already turned itself off so I accidentaly turned it back on /facepalm.
The LG logo briefly appeared for a second, then it turned off. Still, the rest of the phone seemed operational (the notification lights, the speaker etc.). I immediately got home and put the phone in a bag of rice. i only removed the sim tray since the battery is sealed and I had no idea how to open the phone without losing my warranty.
So my question is : am I screwed? I was personally thinking of the following scenarios :
1.Leave it in the rice for 48 hours. If the situation remains unchanged, try to send the phone back and pretend that it happened out of the blue. The fact that I initially bought it as a used phone (while retaining the 2 years of warranty) might also help...
2.Go to a service. Now this would mean 2 things :
1.automatically void my warranty, since the phone will be opened
2.there's a big chance that the service wouldn't be able to do anything so I would automatically be left with an unoperational phone AND with no warranty.
Also, I've heard that even IF my phone comes back to life, the components will still be affected in the long run...
I honestly don't know what to do. I really like (liked...) this phone and the fact that I payed over 600$ for it (and bought it as my birthday present) is that more painful...
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

As far as I know the most phones have an indicator for wetness. And I know that even without an indicator they can see what happened. I think your warranty is gone.
As you bought it as a used phone, I would try to sent it in for a repair even if it powers on and see what happens. If the fix is free or not too expensive I would do this.
If its to expensive but everything works, i would try to clean it with alcohol. There are guides around how to disassemble the phone
Hi, I have a LG K20 Plus. I currently can't turn the phone on, so I don't have much software information to give you. The phone was bought at T-Mobile (Metro by T-Mobile) and I had a SafeLink sim card and a 16 gb micro sd card inserted when the issue started. I have since removed both. It says Qualcomm snapdragon on the screen when it starts. It was also rooted and the bootloader is unlocked.
I broke the screen on my phone and I decided to do the repair myself. I have done about 7 or 8 screen replacements and I actually did this phone a year ago with no issues, so I felt I could manage this one as well. I bought an entire display (from ebay) and switched it out with no problems. Initially it worked great! I used it for a few days before realizing that I had no sound. I opened it back up and noticed the loud speaker had fallen out. I found it, put it back in, reassembled it as I normally do and turned it on.
NOTE: when I was reassembling it the second time, I actually tried to put a screw in a hole that wasn't a screw hole. I used a light to normal amount of pressure but I didn't force it. I think it's the hole where the moisture detector is. Picture #1
I turned it on and right after the logo screen I got a message that said "High temperature detected Powering off for your safety" and it immediately shut off. The phone does appear to charge normally but it won't stay on. I did a factory reset (I'm not sure if it's still rooted but the bootloader is still unlocked). I also switched back to the old (broken) display just to check if that would work. I couldn't see any difference in the shielding but I switched them just to be sure. I bought a new battery and installed it. I took a q-tip and 95% Isopropyl Alcohol and cleaned pretty much the entire motherboard, paying special attention to the battery connections. After each one of these things, I tried to start it with the same error message immediately upon start up.
NOTE: At no point has the phone every physically felt hot or even warm. I don't think it's on long enough for it to get hot. But something is wrong and I have no idea what it is. I, literally, took the phone apart, put in the speaker and put it back together in less than 5 minutes. Could it be I just bumped something and knocked it loose?
I searched for any information I could find both here and with google but there is next to no information on the LG K20 Plus. I did find some information on the LG V20 that had overheating issues, and that has been all the luck I've had. I watched several videos and it seems the solution is to apply thermal paste. But my phone doesn't have any evidence that thermal paste was ever on it. I went and bought some but I have no idea where exactly to put it or even if it's needed. Most videos showed people using some kind of aluminum foil but I'm not sure if that is safe. I have several old phone laying around and I managed to get some of the silver tape and a copper square thing but, again, my phone did not have these things to begin with. I don't want to start adding things only to make it worse.
There is a slight difference of the tape that is on my phone now (the display I just bought) as compared to the old one (broken display). Picture #2 Again, I have no idea if that means anything but I thought it worth mentioning. Picture #3 is how it looks now as if I were going to put it back together. Picture #4 is the part (don't know name) where the videos show to apply the thermal paste and the shielding.
I'm really at a loss as to what to do next and I can't really afford to take it in to have it repaired before next month. If anybody has any insight or answers as to what happened, I'd be very grateful for your help. I'm sorry for the long post. I just wanted to tell you everything I have done in detail. Thank you
If you're using Kernel Auditor or any other kernel adjustment simply reset to default and use only ondemand or interactive. There's also options for the thermal portion of the kernel, don't mess with those. If VCC or another thermal option was checked off turn it back on. Putting the GPS to the moderate setting (the one below high accuracy) will keep the temps down as well. Are you using a custom ROM? Omgosh, thank you so much for taking the time to respond! Although I'm sure everything you are saying is very smart, I have absolutely no idea what you're saying. I'll do my best to try and answer you. I don't know what SCOPE is or how to send a message there. I don't think I'm using any thing for the "kernal". Also, I don't know what VCC or Discord is. As far as turning off setting for GPS or any other app, the phone will not stay on. I get about 1 sec after the logo when it boots up, then the error message about overheating and it immediately shuts off. I did a factory reset so everything should be good to go as far as apps. I don't think I'm using a custom ROM. The only thing I did was install TWRP, unlocked the bootloader and rooted the phone a year ago but nothing since then. As I stated earlier, this happened right after I did a display repair. Is there something on the MOBO that can get bumped that will make your phone get hot or send a overheating error. My phone doesn't show any sign that there was ever thermal paste on it prior but should I add some now. Will that help?
Update... Now the phone does not power on at all. When I plug it in to charge it I get an error that says "Device temperature is too high or low. Please move to another place to charge. I wonder where you went. I googled SCOPE so I could sign up to message you like you asked me to but nothing but definitions came up. I know I'm out of my league here. You guys all talk so technical. I didn't understand one thing the person asked me for. I know it's rare to get a response as quickly as I did and I was so happy to see someone had responded. Now, I just feel stupid and defeated. Hey, I just wanted to say sorry this happened to you. The same thing happened to me. My LG K20 Plus, no matter what button combinations I push and for how long I hold them, will not turn on or go into download mode. Plugging it in to a charger or PC does nothing either. Before it got to this state, I got the infamous green screen of death/Demigod crash handler (google this--it's a known issue with some models of LG phones and it happens when they overheat). It's definitely a hardware/build issue, and especially since this issue keeps the phone from turning on or connecting to a computer, I don't see a workable fix short of buying a new phone, unfortunately. Again, I'm in the same boat so I'm not happy about it either. I would say XDA is by far the best site to find a fix to this sort of problem, so if no one here has any suggestions on how to fix it, I think you (we) may be out of luck.
Thank you for letting me know. I'm not sure of some of what you said but I did catch the bottom line. Basically, just hold onto the phone until someone here comes up with a fix or workaround? I have a question for you. Did your problem start after you did some kind of repair? I'm wondering if I bumped something on the mobo to make it give a false overheating error. Do you happen to know where that sensor might be located? Sorry you are having problems to. It really stinks when your phone breaks and no matter how much time and energy you put it to figuring out the problem to fix it, there just isn't any good answers out there. I wish you lots of luck and if you figure anything out, please update here so I can try it too.
