I am interested in the optional Mobile Hotspot feature and its extra-cost service. I cannot justify that expense if I have to lock it in for a whole two-year contract, but I would find it useful sometimes.
For example, if I plan to be traveling in a certain month and want to add this service for $30 for that billing cycle but drop it later, could I do so?

If you add/remove the hotspot service before your billing cycle they should be able to change it whenever you want.
Personally though, if you just root your phone, you can have free tethering whenever you want!
You don't have to commit to it, you can add and cancel whenever.
I heard that if you want to use the full-fledged mobile hotspot funstionality to connect to multiple devices, you must pay the $30 mobile broadband service, but if you just wanna tether to one device using, says, PDAnet, you don't have to buy the plan. Is it true? There are EVO users who claim that Sprint cut it off once they know you're tethering w/o plan even just to one device using PDAnet.

I believe the official statement from Sprint is that this is allowed. However, the last time I used PDAnet, it wasn't very good, and I much prefer the root approach to it, as that way you can tether via wifi as well.
The only way Sprint will actually know if you are tethering is if you are using HIGH AMOUNTS of data CONSTANTLY. Which in that case, they have the right to cut you off if its obvious you are tethering on a constant basis.
But simply tethering a few devices to browse internet, stream videos/music doesn't use up TOO much data. The most I've ever used was about 200MB when I had 3 laptops tethered to my phone for about 1.5 hours.
$30 bucks a month for tethering is ridiculous unless you plan on being tethered for days on end.
The rooted tether works perfectly on my Nexus, to connect laptops, my DSi, friends iphones/ipod touches etc and is best of all free.

Nevertheless, there is a difference between what the terms and conditions might forbid, and what you might get away with only because it is selectively enforced at the carrier's discretion. From Sprint's point of view, reading the agreement you sign, you might be considered to be cheating them out of payment for a premium service. You might think that "ridiculous," but you signed a contract.
I know about under-the-table, rooted tethering and hotspot creation. I can go to the dev forums and read about that if and when I need to. My question is about the business terms and process for following the contract.
The hotspot is $29.99 a month. You can turn it on and off all you want. If you only use it for the weekend, that's all they charge you for. I do it like twice a month with evo. I just chat with them and it takes like 3 mins. Most of the time I use USB tethering. I have 2.2 and cant root yet so I use PDAnet. Awesome little program. I have a good 4G so I use the hell out of it.
I've talk to sprint about it and the USB and Bluetooth tethering is fine. Free
Use PDAnet and it will work 4G and 3G.
If I plan to use the PS3 or Wii. Ill chat with a rep and turn the WiFi Hub on for a few days.
Any way to create hotspot in Gignerblur (without paying extra to ATT) ?
Wow, this is exactly what people were talking about in that long thread about how most people dont steal tethering, lol. Way more of the casual users do than you think and thus its justified for At&T to lock down any device they feel they need to.

F that -- I pay for unlimited internet access from them AND for unlimited text (even though texting is JUST data). I should be able to use my unlimited internet the way I want to use it without having to incur more charges.
1) texting is NOT DATA, it uses un-use protions of the VOICE network.
2) you pay for unlimited data on YOUR DEVICE not on every wi-fi enabled device you own.
Did you enable tether+sideload when you rooted? If so, just choose the custom tether APN and then enable hotspot. Tether+sideload is something separate from Gingerblur.

ATT gives us 2gb of data for 25 dollars a month, why do they get to control the way that we use those 2gb? If you were on an unlimited plan and used tens of gigs per month then I would understand how that would be abusing the system but if you are on a data capped plan then tether away in my opinion.
I would agree except you signed a contract.
Yes. , we all signed contracts. It's not like we were given much choice. In the usa all cell carriers practice the same policy. They all make money from costumers that need their services. But they force our hand into paying for services that are overpriced and convenientley designed to bring them even more profit to our losses. I would love to be able to buy a smartphone and use the limited data plan it comes with any way I want to. If I get 2 gigs and want to use them through my pc, well, than I should've allowed to do so. Data is data and is sold to us in a certain quantity, at not allways good quality, because or speed limitations and reception. We pay for it anyway, but why should we settle for tethering charges? Well because we have no choice. All carriers do the same so there are no options. They do it because they want more monkey and apparently nobody can stop them. Its like gas prices. They find the lamest reasons to increase prices and they get away with it because we need gas and are so damn dependent on it. We now need data and we will pay for it no matter the unfairness of the conditions. Maybe they should start charging extra if we buy gas for anything else other than our personal cars. Like if u want to use your boat, well, than u have to have a different price for that. Im tyerd and rambling but its not right.

To Forcelite. I pay for 2GB data, I would like to use it whatever way I'd like.
It should have asked you if you wanted to enable sideloading and/or tethering at somepoint after you ran beforeupdate.bat
Got it, thanks

this reminds me of back in the day when isp tried to charge extra for people with more than one computer in the house, then wifi routers came along... kinda ridiculous that people pay for their data and cant use it how they want, what difference does it make as long as users dont go over their data plan. this just seems like a method for att to get people to sign up for more data that they can use by restricting tether.
As many of you know att was busting users tethering. I dont really use it all that often and since all the talk about att catching people tethering, i thought i would never be able to use it ever again, IF i needed too. Some times share with the klids phones if we are mobile. They dont have data.
Ive turned it on a couple times testing. I connected the laptop to it and loaded "a" page. I havent gotton any emails yet, or ever.
I was just wondering, since this is not an att phone, and there is no tether manager, should we be able to tether without getting detected?
I thought for sure there was going to be a topic already here, but theres not???? my search didnt turn up andything!!

I made mine a wireless hotspot for my friends for about an hour and a half like two weeks ago and they didn't say anything to me or kick me off my data plan.
Thank for posting this! I was wondering as well!
They probably won't say anything so long as you keep within your data cap. Going over it and they will likely scold you...

Thank you!
When I had the HTC Evo I also had the tethering option ($30/month) but, fortunately, my company was picking up 90% of the tab. Now that my Evo is gone and I have a company provided iP4 I can't tether.
I have mixed feeling about tethering as it is a useful tool to have but also very easy to abuse. The problem with the abuse is that it eats into the bandwidth that I need for more casual usage and therefore negatively impacts my usage. I have heard of folks using of 50GB/month and if even a very small fraction of people did that there would be no cellular network that would survive.
When I get the Note I will probably go with the 4GB plan and have tethering. During my time with the Evo I averaged about 600MB/month including tethering, but with the Note I think the data use will go up because it will be far more useful and practical to surf the net and I think I'll probably go over 2GB/month. I will have to see what my data use actually is and if 2GB/month is enough and I can still tether than maybe that will be the way to go.
I don't see the need to try to game the system all that much and am willing to pay for what I use...

I've tethered with my Dell streak for over a year, never had an issue.
You just have to stay under the radar. Start downloading ISO size files, and you can bet you will get dinged.
I have been tethering illicitly for almost a year, first on my rooted SGS and now my Note, because that's been my only available "broadband" connection where I live (and I only get about 300kbps down even on HSPA 3g... very oversubscribed towers around here).
I got the dreaded warning letter from AT&T a couple months ago, where they politely suggested that I need to upgrade my plan to include tethering...and if I continue tethering, they will eventually do it for me.
That was a few months ago and they haven't done it yet, though I did back off on my data consumption after I got that letter (I stand to lose my unlimited data plan as well as seeing my monthly bill go up by $30).
I suspect that they infer that you're tethering based on your traffic, and that they can't actually tell whether you have tethering enabled on your rooted phone. E.g. if you're doing a lot of bittorrenting and connecting to sites like Windowsupdate.com, those would be pretty big clue that you're running a PC over your connection.
I rarely use my PC any more, and no more bt :-( so I am hoping they will continue to let my occasional small amount of tethering slide. And if they don't, I may just upgrade to a Verizon 4g LTE mifi instead, since that is now available in my area
HTH
I'm on att and with android phones I've been tethering for almost two years with no problem. It included the Nexus one, the galaxy tab, the inspire 4g, the unlocked sgs2 and now the Note. I frequently used the tethering option to connect my galaxy tab 10.1. I average 5GB a month and have never gotten any warning.

I'm based in the UK so i don't have any useful input, I just find this article interesting. Your guys network operators over in the US sound like nazis. and I thought ours were bad?
I've seen a few networks over here include tethering as a "bolt-on" style upgrade to a price plan, but my question is, how the hell do they know? like with my SGS, tethering is part of the phone, so it was my understanding that they couldn't tell (unless you had anormal traffic - but with phones getting better processors surely that kind of traffic will very soon, if not already, be possible without tethering?)

yeah, like I said: I don't think they can actually tell you have tethering enabled, so if the only devices you're connecting to your AP are other phones, they likely will never figure it out. But if you connect a Mac or PC much, watch out.
UPDATE: AT&T finally forced me into their tethering plan. I put my SIM into an old dumb phone, went online and changed the phone model on my acct, and they automatically dropped me back into my old unlimited data plan. Swapped the SIM back into the Note, all better again
We'll see how long it lasts, but since I'm not tethering anymore (just got a Verizon LTE Mifi) I will probably drop my data pan down to the minimum 200mb and save another $15/mo.
I'm seriously looking into switching all four of my lines over to Verizon now!
Has anyone figured out the best way to enable the wifi tethering capability?
I know on the s4, all the roms came out with this feature, it seems the s5 is still not rooted yet, what is everyone using, exploit or app?
this has been posted, but the best way to accomplish this right now without root is with FoxFi ( paid as far as i know and use now ) .. then USB or Bluetooth tether. you can then while tethered activate "wifi share" for your wifi devices. ..... if there is another method please someone post it!
verizon s5 are not allowed to do it..
Wow, what in the world is going on here...
Verizon may have made their last move. I just bought my phone with new 2 year contract, can i return and cancel my contract within a certain time period or am I inevitably effed?
I can not and will not put up with anymore of big Red's nazi ways, I am paying for a service and at the price im paying more than justifies my using of said service in any and every way that i want. If this does not get resolved soon, its a deal breaker for me and verizon. Not that it will make any difference...
and I hate that it would essentially make me move to a lesser carrier with less coverage and internet speed, but big red is starting to do that guv'mint thinking and i dont like where this is headed.

I require a real wifi tether, usb and bluetooth are too restrictive and time consuming.
I hope a few of the more experienced devs can chime in on whether this is something to wait for or just return/sell the device immediately?

If you have one of their new plans which I'm assuming you do since you upgraded, you absolutely can use native hotspot. I ran it yesterday. You have to turn it on via settings instead of the traditional way of tapping the Wi-Fi app.

I gave up the unlimited data plan and went with the Share Everything with 6gb of data. I did an analysis of my data usage for the past year and found that I never used more than 2gb a month. The unlimited talk and text is more important to me than unlimited data. Although I use the web quite a bit on the phone, I use wifi at home and at work, so it limits my 4G data usage substantially.
Verizon will eventually find a way to eliminate unlimited data altogether, or with some of the new Internet legislation being pushed throttle the bandwidth to the point that it's useless.
I don't understand what people are doing to use 30gb a month or higher unless you are using the plan as your home ISP service connecting multiple devices, or streaming movies all day long.

I have Verizon Home Fusion for home internet and I do not have wifi at work. Largest amount of data I can subscribe to per month is 30GB/month, for my home. I'm too far off the road for cable, DSL, and I didn't want Satellite (which still has limits).
I'm grandfathered into unlimited. I use about 30 GB a month tethering, mostly updates for the XBOX One, downloading stuff from the usenet, streaming Netflix or HBO Go to my iPad when I'm at my camper, which is in the woods.
I hope you have an understanding now of how someone can use 30 GB per month.
On an average month, prior to acquiring my GS5, I was using about 45gb of data. That's web surfing, PC and Xbox 360 gaming, and streaming videos. On HEAVY months, I was up around 75gb of data used. My lightest month to date of data usage was 29gb of data. No way in heck I am giving up my unlimited when I have no home landline internet.. This IS my salvation.
Well in response to the OP and to others who may be confused, WIFI tether (as well as bluetooth and usb) is built in and available as long as you have the share everything plan. Until we get root there will be no native wifi hack. I've been told a talented dev has an s5 in hand, i bet it wont be too long until root is achieved, after which native hacks will be forthcoming
It takes time, has anyone here had the s4 before the s5? Do you recommend me to get the s4 or s5? I'm looking to upgrade but I have to pay full price for the phone because I use about 100 gb every month, the only two things that make me doubt is that wifi tether is not posible yet and since I eat my fingernails I can't open the usb with my fingers on the S5 lmao

Thanks for your reply but I need to activate on the unlimited plan and although when I'm home I don't use that much but when traveling it sure is much cheaper than paying 7-20 bucks a day for WiFi access in some places.... not having root is no good in this particular case especially because I rely on it for work and has never been an issue until now. And giving more money to Verizon is not an options unlimited is already 125 per month

To kprice8
What I would do if I were you. Put your 4G SIM card back in your old device until root becomes available. That way you have the Wifi Tether and can use your Unlimited data. And at the same time you can use your S5 for all your apps and such. But use the old device for calling and texting. Just my suggestion. You are lucky, I would never give up that unlimited plan. And these devs are extremely clever you'll have Wifi Tethering on your S5 in no time.

Not an option. Took BestBuy up on their trade in offer. Didn't consider this at the time. But for the future, now I will know better...
So here's my situation.... I work at a company that has a large data plan with US Cellular for 6 devices. One of these devices is used by the owner of the company at his home to provide him with his main source of internet as there are no other good options in the rural area in which he lives (satellite is not an option, as they are overpriced and cannot provide reliable internet for online gaming due to the long ping time). He watches a lot of Netflix and this last month used almost 90 GB or so on his line alone... This resulted in a massive overage charge...like $1,000 massive....
Time for a change..... so the only companies that offer any sort of "unlimited" data are T-mobile, and AT&T. The data options at T-mobile are basically you pay $95 per month and get "unlimited" data.... meaning 22GB of data before it is throttled, and only 15GB of data can be used for tethering.... I find this to be complete BS..... I would be willing to pay $200 per month if I had to to get around 100GB of data... simply put NO ONE will offer that... they all want to rape you... they simply will not provide me with a plan that works.... So I've looked at the methods people used to use to get around the tethering restriction with T-mobile, either by changing the APN settings, or using a VPN.... apparently these methods do not work anymore??? Can someone shed some light as to what DOES work as of TODAY 3/30/16, and what my options are as far as workarounds??? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Im not here to sell tmobile, honest, but... The way it works is that if you have a t-mobile plan that has at least 3GB of hotspot data, then if you are at participating partner web sites, the data usage will not be added to your phones usage count. They will provide a list of sites that partner into this. Most are movie/video streaming sites. This includes netflix, youtube, hulu, and so many other video streaming and tv network sites. If your favorite is not on the list, you can request it.
Just for for the current time until you find a solution that resolves the entire needs that he may have, this may keep his costs in line if most of the usage is from these sites. I do not know about the data usage from the ads from these sites. I just learned of this and have not tested it out. The online documentation is straight forward.
Really curious why every question how to hide tethering gets ignored on xda
