I use GOSMS PRO to convert group texts into MMS. It works. But when multiple messages come at the same time my Galaxy S5 heats up and slows down to a crawl, and sometimes the messages don't come in order.
There are only about 300 messages in this particular group text so it shouldn't be the size of it.
And why does my phone heat up like crazy, so much so that i can feel it hotter when processing these group messages, then it cools down when they aren't coming
anyone?

Are you using TouchWiz launcher cause that might be the reason, I'm using Nova Launcher.... I really hate TouchWiz after I rooted I froze it and installed Nova and I have to say I never came across that issue.

It's perfectly normal for a phone to get warm when you are doing something processor intensive. Electronics dissipate heat under load. As simple as that.
I don't know why you would dismiss out of hand that converting 300 messages at once could be a significant load. Again it sounds like expected behaviour. You can try altermate apps, perhaps another app would handle the batch of messages more efficiently. Or debloat your phone so that the baseline load on the processor is reduced.
.
Yes stock TouchWiz
I'm not getting 300 messages at the same time there's about 300 messages in the thread going back 6 months. It was only processing like 10 messages incoming at the same time.
I was just wondering if this is common behavior for other people on group texts

is there any way to cap the number of SMS messages that are stored in my inbox and sent box? I don't use conversation mode with the bug still about making texting impossible so id rather just limit the number if texts stored on the phone.. Cheers
how many texts do you need before the bug starts, I've not had it hsppen as yet on stock 1.48 ROM with hotfixes.
cheers
Dean
not that many if I'm being honest, but I text like I would write on a chat program so i go through tonnes of texts just in one small chat lol. which means no text is really important so if the phone deleted old ones for new ones after like 20 id be happy. my Nokia e51 could do it lol...
Any news on this topic?
I use the conversation mode, but even with all the new fixes and ROMs which have helped to speed up the loading time no doubt, it would still be nice to limit the number of messages. When it loads the messages typing becomes laggy and rather annoying.
i have currently on one contact more than 1300 messages with stock1.48 including all hotfixes an do not have any issues with.the input field is given free instantly even if the counter ist working and messages are loading. the only odd thing is that sometimes all messages are loaded prompt and sometimes they dont... propabely some kinda caching bla bla
cheers
lee
Yea, I haven't figured when and why it needs to be loaded either. But mine gets laggy while the counter counts...
I just got a myTouch 4g, and I've had issues with the speed of accessing text messages. It takes a good 5+ seconds to access a thread to read or respond to texts.
I should probably note that I switched from a Vibrant and backed up my texts with SMS Backup & Restore App, I have about 9k texts with threads of 400+ messages.
Compared to a BB Bold, the time it takes to access messages for me is a deal breaker. I'm hoping that there is something wrong with my phone as I love everything else about it, but I'm strongly considering switching to a Bold within my 2 week return period...
Has anyone else had issues with the text messaging speed??
Never had any issue like that. But I also don't have that many texts. Back up your texts again and clear the phone and try to see how responsive it is when you don't have any saved on the phone.
Also try something other than the stock app to see if that helps
Failing all of that, go to a t-mobile store and try out another mt4g and see if the problem exists.
Hope any of those helps. Sorry to hear about the troubles.

You're using the stock messaging app correct? If you are, use Handcent. Handcent archives them better, so each thread loads faster. I too have 8,000+ texts.
Deleting them helped somewhat but once a thread has a few hundred messages it starts to slow down.
I'm using the stock app, so I'll give Handcent a try to see if that works. I hope so as I'm starting to like everything else about the device more and more.
Any time I bust more than 500 ish in a thread, or about 2k total it becomes sluggish... I just delete them... its whatever, you can save the important SMS somewhere else. Like gmail

I think you just have waay too many text.
Handcent helped sooo much, the native app is like molasses compared to it.
It still struggles with a large amount of texts but not as much. To solve that I found the "delete old messages" app, which that clears your texts but keeps the last X weeks.
Thanks for all the help! I'm sticking with android now, as the texting is fast enough.
Stock sms app has auto delete old built in as well
[via XDA app]
the 1000 messages limitation in the atrix is very annoying to me as i have over 3000 sms with my girlfriend and i would like to keep them all, is this a way to disable this stupid annoying limitation???? this is the first time i came across a smartphone with this limitation... tht sucks!!!
tried different messaging apps, message number can be over 1000, but after some time it go back to 1000, very annoying!

no idea how to change the limit, but grab SMS backup and restore. When you get close to 1000 back them up, move the file somewhere, and clean them out.
honestly though, how many of those old messages do you really need to keep?
OP loves his girrrlfriend, ew that's gay!
jk.. I like using GO SMS. You can backup messages there and apparently you can even disable the native SMS client. I haven't done so because it's not problematic for me, but all in all it's a great SMS program and I believe you can have more than 1000 messages. If not, you can easily and safely back them up.
My only gripe was that in the past you couldn't backup user settings, but now you can. So IMO their SMS app is damn near flawless. I have hundreds, if not thousands of texts from my wife too.
Get a new GF. Problem solved
1000 SMS limitation?
I've imported my 11000 SMS (from year 2007 from Windows Mobile) and those was been accepted from Atrix.
However it seems Atrix becomes instable and very slow with that amount of SMS stored in "text Messaging" application: many times it freeze for 2 minutes and I'm unable to delete a conversation because of timeout (timeout restarts SMS application before it has finished)
So I've got a few friends who use iPhones as well as Android phones and they like to all talk via group text. I wasn't a huge fan myself but I've finally decided to go this route and it's growing on me.
Now here is the issue. When I'm sending one on one to anyone, I've never had a single problem in my house. Service is decent (2-3 bars) but again, no problems. When I'm doing group text (converted to MMS), many times it will just sit there with the little blue circle going round and round. Sometimes it will go through, other times (about 20%) it won't. I've got reception the entire time... but it just sits there doing nothing. Usually I end up copying the text (no attachments either btw), delete the message, then paste and re-send and then voila! - it works.
Any ideas what might be going on? As you can see in my sig, I'm only rooted with CWM, that's it. Is there maybe a better SMS app that would work better with this type of heavy use? I had GO SMS for a bit but honestly I'm not a fan anymore.
Also, is there maybe a way to NOT keep converting every message to MMS because I'm thinking that clearly is part of the issue here. Would love to just keep them as SMS but I fear that group messaging simply won't function that way.

Have you taken the OTA? I'm just wondering as the stock app works great for me. Go sucks because of all the add ons they added last year.
No, because Group MMS is an MMS. It is not an SMS.
Stock rom for me in the texting app was always slow to me and I had issues... I also do HEAVY group chats (2 or 3 groups) throughout the day. Best I found so far is the AOSP Messaging app. (SMS app included in CM10.1 and all AOSP Roms). Theres a port of it for Touchwiz but it doesn't work right when receiving group text from iPhone currently for some reason.

hmmm... I'll keep digging around.

Hi,
I restored 16k messages with SMS Backup and Restore. Everything went pretty OK.
In one thread I have more than 7k SMS messages. Others - smaller.
Is it normal that stock SMS app can't handle that big amount of messages (7k+) without lag in one thread?
I had absolutely no problem or lag with my 3Yr old Galaxy Nexus.
Switched to Hangout and no problems or lag there. But still would like to use stock SMS app.
Any ideas?
Agree
I am having the same problem with my S4. Seems like i am not getting twitter or facebook sms for a long period of time. How can we boost the speed?
Me too. Restored 23k of messages.
It is only slow when in a thread trying to go back to the main list. Otherwise it is ok.
Honestly you're asking for trouble leaving all the messages on the phone. I had a Samsung Infuse and kept tons of messages on it. One day I stopped receiving messages. After I deleted all my messages, I started receiving them again smh
Why not use Hangouts? Any reason for the preference to the stock app? I cannot go back since it does not look that great (UI)...
Also, I am curious to know why you need to track so many text messages... I delete them on a weekly basis.
Messaging should be fast. Hangout requires 1-2 taps more than stock app to do same tasks.

I know some human is insane. Keeping 7K, 10K, 20K message for what?
Keep track for future revenge? Speechless...
agree, I like keep my messages too but I upload them to my gmail using SMS backup+
it's much easier to navigate that way too

Hey, don't judge how people choose to use their phones. Some want all their messages stored, some erase some of them, some erase all of them. It's nobody's business why and certainly sanity is not assessed by the amount of SMS on your phone.

I just don't delete them.
I also don't delete emails in my Gmail account since the start of the Gmail service. Beacuse Google said "you will never need to delete your email". I don't delete my corporate emails as well. I applied the same to text messages. It worked so far: my previous phone (Galaxy Nexus) handled without problems. Today in Note 4 - only Hangout app handles them without a lag.
Absolutely no intentions of future revenge or smth.

Email is different. It not load all in your device.
SMS wise is not, you need full load. Without delete it just equal to find trouble itself.

What is it about the stock app that you prefer? I was using mysms for a while between note 4 and tab 4 and then switched back to the stock Messages app and the lag was a bit much for me. Conversations taking 5-10 seconds to load, I had to wait to start typing for a few seconds otherwise I would get a crazy mix of the first few words, etc. There are several alternatives in the play store though, I'm currently trying out textra and haven't had any issues, lag or otherwise.
Now I use Messenger from Google
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.apps.messaging
Better than both stock and hangouts.
