the 1000 messages limitation in the atrix is very annoying to me as i have over 3000 sms with my girlfriend and i would like to keep them all, is this a way to disable this stupid annoying limitation???? this is the first time i came across a smartphone with this limitation... tht sucks!!!
tried different messaging apps, message number can be over 1000, but after some time it go back to 1000, very annoying!

no idea how to change the limit, but grab SMS backup and restore. When you get close to 1000 back them up, move the file somewhere, and clean them out.
honestly though, how many of those old messages do you really need to keep?
OP loves his girrrlfriend, ew that's gay!
jk.. I like using GO SMS. You can backup messages there and apparently you can even disable the native SMS client. I haven't done so because it's not problematic for me, but all in all it's a great SMS program and I believe you can have more than 1000 messages. If not, you can easily and safely back them up.
My only gripe was that in the past you couldn't backup user settings, but now you can. So IMO their SMS app is damn near flawless. I have hundreds, if not thousands of texts from my wife too.
Get a new GF. Problem solved
1000 SMS limitation?
I've imported my 11000 SMS (from year 2007 from Windows Mobile) and those was been accepted from Atrix.
However it seems Atrix becomes instable and very slow with that amount of SMS stored in "text Messaging" application: many times it freeze for 2 minutes and I'm unable to delete a conversation because of timeout (timeout restarts SMS application before it has finished)

Hey guys, stumbled across this forum while searching for help with another issue and it's been a great help so far.
Anyway, have a new problem with the phone. I have (or atleast had) a fair amount of messages from various people. On my birthday of all days (I guess I was getting larger than average amount of messages?), the phone decided to display some error message which I didn't see and then deleted all of my messages, so people have messaged me for my bday and I have no idea what they have said, haha, but thats a seperate problem.
Went into the settings and the phone has checked 'delete old messages' again even though I made sure this was off when I first got the phone.
I changed it back and checked again... the phone has checked the box again. No matter what I do it keeps checking the box.
Any ideas?
I have that bug too. I do not know how to solve it. In order not to del my old messages, I just increase the text message limit (from 200 to 1000).
I have the exact same problem. Very annoying. I've lost a fair amount messages due to this too. Now I've increased the text message limit from 200 to 500 and I backup all my SMSes to my gmail account using "SMS Backup" every night. Seems to be the only way to preserve old messages at the moment.

I've done that now too (up to 5000 as thats the limit), so hopefully it should be ok now, but I'd still like to know how to turn this auto delete function off if possible. I bought this phone because I was sick of how controlling the iPhone was, don't really want another phone that does what it wants, haha.
Up until today it used to just ask me if I want to delete older messages everytime I went into messages, but now its just decided it's going to do it.
Temp. Fix-ish.
I don't want to bump an old thread and I don't know if this has been solved yet but when I discovered this I did some tinkering and discovered it appears to be triggered by backing out of the messaging service using the back key. The trick is to use the home key to take you back to the home screen. This will allow you to always have "Delete old messages" unticked.
Until a fix is out I hope this helps.
I had this issue before!
Surprisingly, it went away after flashing to another firmware (which turned out not liking) and then flashing back to my old firmware via Kies.
If you're unwilling to go that route, then I suggest using a different messaging app such as Handcent SMS or something like it and bypass the default messaging app all together. It doesn't look as nice as the default messaging app IMHO but it does not have all the quirks the former gives (like changing 3-SMS long messages to an MMS automatically...irritating!)
I heard Froyo will be fixing the annoyance I just mentioned. Maybe once the official Froyo from Samsung comes out all these small annoyances would go away.
That 3-long SMS to MMS is annoying because I get unlimited SMS but it charges me the standard rate for MMS so it's stupid.
I never really reach the 5000 limit and I'm happy using the home key method as it is but good options otherwise.
not sure whats up...
sometimes it takes a while for message to come up.. or opening a thread... or switching back to main screen message. is it because there is too many texts? or does that not matter?
also sometimes the N1 is a bit glitchy to where ones where i have contacts for in address book, shows up as number without picture... like if i didnt have the contact added... then after a while, the name shows up again..
any ideas?
stock N1 on 2.2.1
*edit* using the advanced task killer doesnt help either.
The messaging app will slow way down if you have a lot of saved texts.
24417 according to SMS Backup & Restore...
I use an app to back up all my SMS's to my gmail (tv.studer.smssync) and then have another app that automatically deletes any over a week old from my phone (com.carrotapp.smscleanerpro) - this one was a paid app, but only like $1

what are the links for? does it work for stock N1? $1 is no problem as long as it works well..
how does it back up to ur gmail? can u see it on gmail?

*edit*
trying that SMS backup ... omg so slow.. 100 per backup... 24417 to back up.. >_<
It'll take a while, but then you can finally get rid of all those messages in your inbox. I have some 4k messages floating about in my gmail, but only ~100-200 on my phone at any time.
Also, in case you didn't already see, it creates a label in gmail called "SMS" so you have a threaded conversation list view of the messages.

i guess it not my business, im just curious why you would back up that many sms? why would you keep that many on your phone in the first place?
You can't expect 24k text messages and the phone running perfectly smooth.
Why are you keeping them all and backing them up anyway? Are you really going to sit down and read all of it one day? You're crazy if you do lol. I have about 4k right now and each thread is limited to 200 each. So it probably won't be moving from that at all. If I have to go through anything, I think going through 200 messages would be enough. If you're not gonna read all your texts and stuff, I suggest limiting them. Otherwise, backing it all up will just be a pain
24k texts? That's way overkill. SMS restore and backup has an option to just view your xml backups. If you need to read them again, just use that instead of importing them back to your phone. Messages take up space in the phone's internal memory so it's wise to clean up your messages.
But still 24000 messages? I can already already imagine 10000+ "Okies"...

Not at one time, that's my running total in backup (gmail). Like I said, I only have 100-200 on my phone at any given time.
I recommend SMS Backup and Restore by Ritesh Sahu. The other SMS Backup app only backs up your smses to Gmail, which IMO is not practical for 24000 over messages. It takes time and data to upload so many messages to your Gmail.
SMS Backup and Restore on the other hand backs up text smses into a xml file which is much much quicker and easier to handle although 240000+ smses will probably still take up some time. Unfortunately it does not back up MMS messages with pictures though I seldom use MMS anyway.
looks like theres a limit on how much gmail can save SMS's... up to 100 per person.. D: i have some ppl in the thousands on my phone :[
I just got a myTouch 4g, and I've had issues with the speed of accessing text messages. It takes a good 5+ seconds to access a thread to read or respond to texts.
I should probably note that I switched from a Vibrant and backed up my texts with SMS Backup & Restore App, I have about 9k texts with threads of 400+ messages.
Compared to a BB Bold, the time it takes to access messages for me is a deal breaker. I'm hoping that there is something wrong with my phone as I love everything else about it, but I'm strongly considering switching to a Bold within my 2 week return period...
Has anyone else had issues with the text messaging speed??
Never had any issue like that. But I also don't have that many texts. Back up your texts again and clear the phone and try to see how responsive it is when you don't have any saved on the phone.
Also try something other than the stock app to see if that helps
Failing all of that, go to a t-mobile store and try out another mt4g and see if the problem exists.
Hope any of those helps. Sorry to hear about the troubles.

You're using the stock messaging app correct? If you are, use Handcent. Handcent archives them better, so each thread loads faster. I too have 8,000+ texts.
Deleting them helped somewhat but once a thread has a few hundred messages it starts to slow down.
I'm using the stock app, so I'll give Handcent a try to see if that works. I hope so as I'm starting to like everything else about the device more and more.
Any time I bust more than 500 ish in a thread, or about 2k total it becomes sluggish... I just delete them... its whatever, you can save the important SMS somewhere else. Like gmail

I think you just have waay too many text.
Handcent helped sooo much, the native app is like molasses compared to it.
It still struggles with a large amount of texts but not as much. To solve that I found the "delete old messages" app, which that clears your texts but keeps the last X weeks.
Thanks for all the help! I'm sticking with android now, as the texting is fast enough.
Stock sms app has auto delete old built in as well

hey guys!
i've an arc phone that i absolutely love...except one major detail that in the last days is driving me nuts.
I have alot of SMS/MMS with one contact in particular and a few hundred with other contacts. the thing is, in the last days the standard app for SMS was getting really really slow .. so unfortunately i had to start using handcent (why unfortunately? easy..i'm in portugal and handcent doesn't support some of our keys like "ç" or "é" "à" etc ... anyway i still started with handcent since the original program was really slow.
the thing is.. now handcent it's also getting slow.. and im running out of options.
i installed sms backup + but i had problems logging in to gmail (i enabled imap etc etc.. and i always get this error that i should allow access to gmail account, which i did) ... so.. what can i do now?
i can say that i have almost 7000sms/mms total on my arc right now... for you guys saying it's alot and i'm crazy .. c'mon on a .xml file it's not even 2mbytes.
I had an htc p3600 with wmobile 6.1 with over 25000sms and was fast everyday.
does anyone knows an official SEricsson support website?email?
how can i get support to this?
i would love to use the original sms app ... but ...its impossible accepting this slowiness
help?
my best regards,
Um... delete your old messages? I can't imagine an SMS program lagging your phone, unless you're getting thousands of messages and storing each and every one of them. Then the phone may have trouble trying to load all of them...
Having 20000 smses? Good luck.
Same for me. Sms app is real slow. I thought it fist was Go Sms and uninstalled it. But the original app is also really slow.
Btw, I dont have so many sms. I believe it was getting slow when I recieved some mms.
Every sms-app gets slow/hangs when you recieve or send message in very short period It's annoying... I am using Go SMS pro now, but have Handcent & Chomp sms also
Hi
My sister in law has a wildfire and is having issues with the SMS apparently force closing when deleting SMS messages. Is this a known issue? Is there a fix?

if she has many sms it's natural on wildfire... just hit the wait bottom and wait wf does not have a high-end cpu so it can't handle many sms.
htc msging app sucks balls. download some other msging apps like go sms from market, should help
hit thanks if i helped you

tried both Go SMS and Handcent and both show the same issue. She has one thread with nearly 1700 messages in which seems to be causing the issue.
Any more ideas??
As a last resort i have gone into settings\applications\all apps\messaging and cleared all data. This has cleared all messages and then i have set up the sms app to delete sms over 100 per conversation to avoid this in future
EDIT: This did not work. SMS all still there
Right I think I have finally found a way to remove the messages. Ive downloaded "my phone explorer" and used my laptop to delete the messages remotely. Now she has SMS housekeeping set to remove messages over 100 per conversation it should look after itself
deleting messages is a real PITA. It took me about 24 hours to delete 3xxx messages once. You can delete threads with applications like handcent or stock SMS app, they will appear to freeze but after a while they will complete.
A better app I found is "SMS delete". It deletes messages one per one (with options like only delete from that number, only messages containing this word, only older than xx days, ...) and it runs in the background and also when the phone screen is off. It's still slow, but a lot less annoying, and it deletes faster the less messages there are still left on the phone.
I am searching it on the market but I can't find it as of now, I restored it myself using titanium backup. It's a green envelope with a green arrow if you would come across it...
*edit* this one http://android-apps.com/applications/communication/sms-delete-2/ but can't find it in the market, good luck
I'd try the Fix Permissions options at the settings.
