[Q] US Cellular Variant Roms - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the US Cellular variant of the S5(G900R4). Do i have any options for roms? I already have the phone rooted with towel root but it seems like there are no native or AOSP roms available for the US Cellular S5. Thanks in advance.

I believe that USC is one of the carriers that lock their bootloaders. CDMA carriers are noteworthy for being very restrictive.
As a result you won't be able to use a custom ROM, kernel or recovery in a conventional fashion. You can probably use Safestrap to emulate a custom ROM. Look into the details of that. There should be a current Safestrap thread in the Verizon S5 forum. Verizon being another CDMA carrier that feels they need to lock their bootloaders.

Yes I am aware of that but the question that was originally asked was pertaining to a US Cellular (the cell carrier) Samsung S5 (KLTEUSC) not just simply a united states version of a cell phone. Plus I think if the opposite was true the the correct response should be to ask what carrier and/or model they had.

US Cellular, Samsung Galaxy S5 Model: SM-G900R4

Are there any touchwiz ROM's even across other variants....I'm using alliance build 2 right now

I have asked about issues with the other roms not working. I lost calling, texting, and could only use wifi with all roms. I also had to remove the SD card prior to the phone allowing me to activate after flashing back to "stock."
I have not found one that works. I tried Phoenix and Alliance roms at first and was tired of flashing back to stock. You CAN use xposed framework and I have used kernels like Blaze. That is about all I've been able to find. You can find dedicated US cellular forums BUT you won't find much there unless something changed in the last day or two. Nobody would answer my questions about why their roms would not work and possibly how to get them to work Sorry, this is about all you'll find. I had a few issues and my threads were also deleted
..
I have unlocked every USC phone I've ever had...there's plenty of devolopment out there for USC phones. I haven't seen anything other than custom kernels yet for G900R4 though.

There aren't a lot of USC users here so we don't know much about your system. In the past, USC has locked their bootloaders and that is the key reason that you don't see much custom ROM development.
Also, USC (along with Sprint, Verizon) still use CDMA while the rest of the world is using GSM. That basic incompatibility also deters wider development.
Have a look at the Safestrap thread in the Verizon S5 forum. Safestrap is an app for loading an emulated custom ROM + recovery and can probably be used for USC as well.

Does anyone know of a kernel that has SELinux set to permissive that will work? That's honestly the last thing I need. I wanted a bootloader unlocked phone that ran off CDMA so I can use it where I live so US Cellular seemed to be the solution.
US Cellular confirmed that the R4 has a unlocked bootloader. I am running a stock deoxed/debloated touchwiz. I am super surprised and disappointed that there hasn't been more interest and development for this phone. I am so tempted to trade it for a different.

I'm running a g900r4, (klteusc) as well. What rom are you using? I've been all over the gs5 unified and initial developments sections, and am currently using the cm11 unified while waiting for the slim rom unified. I'd gladly prefer a bloat free touch wiz though it seems the stock based roms are exclusive to g900f and the like.
{galaxy s5 g900r4 klteusc)
You guys want this http://teamuscellular.com/Forum/forum/411-galaxy-s5-romskernelsmods/
CM11, kernel w/o SELinux Enforcing, other goodies.
Head over to teamuscellular.com/forum and you should find a few available options to try. Including stock deodexed ncf ROM(touch wiz). And other custom Roms ported to USC. Like "cm 12 lollipop alpha." Looks good but no customization. As well as all stock Odin flashable zips. Some others like alliance and beanstalk have been ported, haven't tried those though. Hope this helps. Enjoy!

[Q] Cricket Galaxy S5

I recently got an S5 from Cricket/AIO. Was wondering if it was the same as the AT&T version because I wanted to root and put a custom ROM onto it.

Most of us have no direct experience with Cricket because it's not a natiomal carrier. It's only an option for a limited number of US zip codes.
Looking at the specs, starting with the model number - SM-G900AZKZAIO strongly suggest that it's just a rebranded ATT 900A model. And sure enough the specs say that your phone uses all of the same frequency bands.
So the overwhelming chances are that it's ATT compatible in all significant aspects.

Just picked one of these up on Black Friday. Care to share your experience with custom roms for this model? Did the Roms/root for the Att variant work okay? Thanks in advance!

I would be very interested to know as well and thank you for starting this thread. Looking at the settings I see the USB TETHERING and WIFI TETHERING is completely missing from the settings altogether. Thats one main reason I want to root so I can actually use my data outside of the phone. Plus the boot animation is Cricket branded. So its not just a relabeled AT&T phone. The model number also ends in 900AZ not 900A like the AT&T version. The kernel is NE7 thought.
I also found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s5/help/flashing-sm-g900az-galaxy-s5-cricket-t2863858
Lets move on to that thread.
Hello, I have a Galaxy S5 from cricket. Samsung-SM-G900AZ with a 5.0 Android Version. Can someone help me root it?
I've successfully rooted and installed the unified blisspop from here on my 900az. It was a long time ago. I think I had to use odin...

Get all the perks of ATT coverage but with an unlocked bootloader.

make android development section for grand 2 lte sm-g7105 also

Hi, all developers I request you to make a separate android development section for galaxy grand 2 LTE sm-g7105 also cause there is no rom pesent for sm-g7105.so roms can be ported to this phone also.

It will be empty. Each major device "name" gets a thread, but variants of a device share it.
Take the Note 2 for example. It'll be a waste of time to create a thread for each variant.
Each network operator in countries like the States (AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint, and US Cellular), Canada, and the UK has its own Note 2 variant. Not to mention the stuff sold in Korea and Japan.

This is true.
But most devs do NOT have the LTE variant, so Dialer and calling-related mods can't be used.
But you can try other mods. Flash stock firmware if things get screwed up.

P.S. We didn't even get CM 11 for the 3G variant!
The LTE one's users would have to wait ...
I can't wait anymore because there is no hope from samsung for kitkat I think difference is of dual sim frameworks and modules and kernel

[Q] Telus S5 kitkat->lollipop keping root

I have a Canadian Telus Samsung Galaxy S5 (SM-G900W8) that is currently rooted and on kitkat
I'm unsure what firmwares are compatible with the W8 model number, but i think i read somewhere that firmware for F models will work too?
What would be the best way to get lollipop on this device, keeping root?

You can flash almost any ROM provided you flash a kernel that supports your model if it already isn't by the dev making the ROM. You may have to update your BL and CS depending on what you want to flash. The T- Mobile/ International/or unified section can be used provided there is support within the ROM or you can flash a kernel such as KT. I have a W8 and am using CyanideL with KT kernel and F2FS BOC1 bootloader amd modem and the phone is stupid fast. All KLTE ROMs can be used without having to flash a separate kernel unless you want to.

Looking fit info how to root Canadian s5 active

I'm being given a Canadian s5 active next week so I'm looking
For info on how to root it and what roms will work on it.
So far from what I've read I can root it with the 900f chainfire root method. And that most roms will not work because the menu and home buttons don't work on custom roms
But that info is pretty out of date...
If you are actively using your s5 active I would love to hear from you
CM 13 based Roms worked for months. Depending on provider have had issues just rooting stock Rogers phone but bell no issues. Depending on what you are looking for lots of stuff available check android dev for Roms Klte is what you are looking for.

Can you tell me what recovery you are using for the s5 active?
I've tried the TWRP for the 900f but it did not work.
Any ideas?
