G3 display manufacturer - G3 General

Seems like LG uses own LGDisplay matrices as well as 3rd party JDI matrices
The display type can be found by typing these commands in terminal(there are some free apps in play store)
su
dmesg | grep -i panel
You also need to be rooted
Which one your G3 got?
Has it yellowish warm or more blueish cool tint on white?
Is it to dim on 100% auto off, or is it too bright?
Reference to start with

This didn't work for me. The commands work, but it doesn't pull the display manufacturer.

It's not Sprint vs ATT. It's probably just the production batch.
I bought two G3s from ATT on day -1 back and white. The black one, which is mine definitely has a more warmer tone ( I don't want to say yellow ). So I don't know...
What I did I went to ATT store to take a look and interestingly all the display models have a whiter screen... but when I asked to replace or compare my phone the new one out of the box had the exact warmer tint...

OK, I have an LGD one. Which one is supposed to be better?

O also have LGD on V10a-EUR-XX firmware.

That's the point of my poll, if we'll find out that G3 don't use panels from 3rd manufacturers, then we'll know that different screens are just batch or calibration and NOT manufacturer related

The G2 is the same, lgd or jdi screens. Appearance-wise, there wasn't much differentiation though. But it did create a mess with custom kernels because the panel drivers are a little different and no one even suspected that they weren't all LG made.

Wish I could check mine (no root yet), but I bought two from Sprint and their screens differ just like in your Sprint/Att video.

I have the LG panel, and I haven't noticed a cast or tint. But one usually wouldn't, without a properly calibrated monitor to compare it to. Our brains adjust for bad color just fine, which is why we need hardware calibrators in digital photography.

I have the LG panel. I assume that's the superior one and LG uses the JDI one just because they can't produce theirs fast enough.

I have the Sprint variant. Not blue, but definitely not warm/yellow. Also, it is BRIGHT at 100%. Bright enough to almost start washing out the colors.
Sent from my LGLS990 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app

I have the LG display. Verizon variant. Very bright at 100%. I keep it at 60% which is plenty strong for me (with auto turned on). Cool colors, nothing indicating of yellow.

Panel Name = LGD 1440p SIC video mode dsi primary panel

I'm on the LGD as well. On a D855

LGD as well, T-mobile D851

No, I've read many times that some G2 screen are yellowish, too, and some has more blueish whites. But I thought that instead of Nexus 5 which almost all items got JDI panels, G2 in contrary all had LG panels until I've read that G2 too sometimes got JDI. So I thought maybe even G3 has panels from different makers
And drivers, you mean custom home baked kernels?

My Nexus 5 had a very yellow display out of the box which I hated. Thankfully there were a ton of colour settings after the custom kernels were released.

LGD here D855.

Evo screen type?

I'm trying to search as many threads as possible from my tapatalk app but I believe its buried deep somewhere. I just wanted to know how can I tell if a have a 0004 novatec or Epson. I searched Google but I keep landing in threads that just compare the two or which one is better with the fps hack etc. Is there a command I could enter in terminal to check?
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
When you change your screen brightness with the widget, if it instantly adjusts it's an epson and if it transitions smoothly its a nova.
Agg there is a command but heck if I can remember it. Its probably buried in on of the old threads about fps cap. Hopefully someone will come in with the command. Kind of a moot point now that htc had integrated the fps fix into the stock kernel.
Well from what you said about the Widget and etc it seems to be a 0004 nova but I could be wrong lol. My whites seem really white and not pinkish but I just wanna be sure. It would Answer some weird probs I've had since I got it for Xmas.

You can check dmesg for epson or nova.
dmesg | grep espon
dmesg | grep nova
Whichever one gives you results is the screen you have.

Yes, the newer batches seem to be using the Novatek displays again. Many people who are new to the EVO or got replacements lately report getting them.

Nope, you are indeed wrong/incorrect.
Rev 003 Evo's were manufactured with *TWO* types of screens; one made by Novatech and another made by epson. As HTC improperly estimated how well Evo's would sell, the two manufacturers were necessary to produce the phones without selling out.
The Novatech screen is the oldest, and can be found on both 002 and 003 Revs. It is usually described as "cool" (tone wise) or "blue", with a tendency to wash out blacks and grays.
The screen made by Epson is the newest, starting with 003 and beyond (I suppose its on 004 but i've never had a chance to mess with one). This one is usually described as being "warmer" or "yellow", with the ability to better replicate blacks and dark grays.
How can you tell if there really is a difference between screens? Well, there is and it's simple to test. Go to settings>brightness. Change the brightness up or down. If it fades to the inputted brightness, you have a Novatech (Nova) screen. If it doesn't fade (i.e just jumps to the next brightness level) then you've got an Epson (Epson) screen. Noobs.
Click to collapse
According to that, newer ones have the epson panel.
Elsewhere in the thread, the differences between the two include the epson panel having warmer colors, and no transition between brightness levels. The nova panel has cooler (whiter) colors and transition is more fluid.
Not sure of what other benefits one has over the other...?
My evo has the nova and the girl at radio shack said the shipment mine was on 1 week b4 Xmas and it's a 0004. I hear having a 0004 nova is rare so im keeping it. Plus my mom has a white 0003 epson she got 4 Xmas . Also and I think mine looks waaaay better.

Yours looks like the one on the right then, correct?
I guess ultimately, it's a user preference thing. I had several different garmins, and found the ones with the softer white (like the one on the left in the pic above) yielded better visibility in the day time, especially during mid day when the sun was over head (on two wheels).

Green tint

Do you have the problem that your screen has a slightly green tint?
It is possible to get rid of it by using apps like "filter your screen" (just add more red and even more blue). But there's no comparison to tools like voodoo color (v1 and gamma correction) on a galaxy nexus/s.
"Filter your screen" biggest problem is that it kills the good black level performance on an oled, contrast is lowered too much for my taste...
Do you guys know some better alternatives (even with enabled root or other hacks)?

It's a screen problem, not caused by the software. But it is possible to get rid of it porting a kernel module called "ColorControl" which was used in many Galaxy Nexus' custom kernels.
Yes during my Galaxy S days i used to have vodoo colour which used to make the screen look amazing, waiting for supercurio or anyother developer to port the option to galaxy note2

As far as I know ColorControl is just a port of voodoo color from the Galaxy S1. So it should be possible to port it to the Galaxy Note 2 as well. Otherwise I'm going to return this nice device with that sh***y display. I will never buy a smartphone with an amoled display again!

Exchange your device.
Looks like this is screen problem, I have perfect white color. Try to test it from *#0*# menu (type this combination at phone app)
Got my replacement today: Gues what?! Exactly the same...
At least the build quality is much better.
I've noticed the same green tint that kind of goes away the brighter the phone gets. My eyes adjust after a few minutes though and I can't really see it. I would really like to get a colortemp/hue adjuster though.
Too bad you guys got faulty screens, as i have slight blue tint on my screen but i absolutely love this! I had One X 6 months and i would never want to change this display to that on One X, this is the best display i've ever seen. I guess it's just me then...

The phone is bad with out your touch
I think the color calibration is totally off on this phone. They chose to calibrate it this way, and it is out of my hands so it doesn't bother me because I love the device. Videos look great when I want to watch them.
Color is all relative because you cannot choose the color of the ambient light around you, so you are never seeing the pure color unless you are in a controlled environment. So why get hung up about how inaccurate the color looks on something in comparison to something else that's not bouncing the true color you're looking for?

Screen lacks color accuracy

Just bought a LG G Pad 8.3 a few days ago after reading the many positive reviews online.
Was especially looking forward to the supposedly high quality screen with excellent color accuracy, as it is also marketed by LG.
So it is with disappointment to discover that my unit does not exhibit these qualities.
The screen on mine has a low color accuracy, especially with reds.
Red colors deviate quite a lot and look almost orange. This results in a poor viewing experience and was not what i expected. Most review videos and photos i have watched does not show this color imprecision.
I suppose i am not the only one with a screen looking like this.
It seems like the screen has not been calibrated properly from the factory.
I feel that i have gotten an inferior product and questions if this is general quality problem with the tablet?

A lot of us have a yellowish screen (including me), I personally fixed it using Screen Adjuster, then the CM 11 built in color adjuster. You can try the color correcting methods I mentioned or use your warranty for a replacement.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I don't really consider my screen as being "yellowish". The whites displayed are pretty neutral i think.
I already tried Screen Adjuster as you suggested, but i have not been able to get any improvement with it. Rooting is not something i want to do for now.
I suspect that LG is sourcing different LCD panels for this device, and that they are not all of equal quality or calibrated to the same standard.
The early production units, among those sent to reviewers, seems to have screens of higher quality with more accurate colours.
Mine is a 402 production.
With the replaced display I also noticed orange-ish red. The white is white, black is black, no lightbleed or yellow-ish screen. I compared some pics on a professional Dell U2412M IPS monitor and the red was really horrible orange-ish on G Pad.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. Please cast a vote in the poll.
Could you perhaps show a photo of your screen?
I think that LG at some point changed the IPS panel used in G Pad 8.3 for a different one. After all of the problems reported with the early productions this would seem appropriate.
It seems, though, that the color calibration of the panels have gone wrong in the process.
It's regrettable, as i otherwise like the aspects of the tablet. I guess i will just have to live with it or buy something else.
I think that the major problem is the gamma curve setting. If you can and know how to, try the kernel posted in the Android development section, which has improved (normal) gamma, although it has possibly some other minor issues unrelated to the display, but nothing unrecoverable - you can flash back to stock kernel easily.
I am currently running with it so you can rest assured that the tablet is not going to die, or something
P.S. Maybe I spoke too soon - had to revert back to the stock kernel because I got apps crashing and also some spontaneous system reboots with the suggested kernel, probably due to the additional tweaks in it, apart from the gamma tweak.

Although I do not have any orange issues, it is true the colors are not perfect, but nor are they bad, at least on mine. My monitors are all color-calibrated and I too have made comparisons. You can use Trickster Mod to adjust the colors, but the gamma really requires the kernel of the ROM in my sig. Bear in mind that though Dell produces a nice monitor, if it is not specifically color-calibrated, then it too is not a reliable source.

Differences in Droid Mini LCDs

Was at local Verizon store yesterday and saw quite a difference in LCD color between my own Droid Mini and the store display units.
My screen was brighter at 100% and warm in color vs. the 3 display units which were more coolish blue and slightly dimmer at 100%.

I was thinking the same thing. Just wish i had another mini to compare. Another thing I noticed is that my screen has contrast a tad bit over sharpened compared to the demo units.
It doesnt bother me but was enough to notice when i held them side by side.
Could this be something Motorola adjusted in the kernel or firmware? Is there an LCD panel contrast app we can get to adjust the setting manually?
It could be that they're using a different part for the lcd display now compared with when you bought yours.

interesting thread for me because i replaced my LCD and i was wondering if there were any differences in the models you can buy on ebay.
my experience: the one i got is very nice, very happy with it. great brightness, and YES warm. TOO warm. the reds are just crazy. i mean the droid thingy at start up just hurts your eyes at full brightness.
its definitely not calibrated well, i mean when i take selfies my skin looks very orange and red tinted, and i'm fairly pale. looks totally different and less red on my laptop (which has upwards of 95% adobe color gamut)
also not to derail this but is this the best forum to post about the mini? i can't find the forum for it. is it basically a smaller version of the droid ultra or something?
I think this is the best place to post about the mini.
I'm glad you have experience with replacing the LCD and seeing a different result.
I'm going through the same thing with my LG G2. I notice there's quite a difference in LCDs with these phones.
My G2 also has a difference in its LCD picture vs other G2s even on the same carrier.
With the G2 there's an app which tells what version LCD you have.
Wonder if there's a way to check what version LCD we have without opening the phone and literally going through a few of them to verify.

If u can, try to stop by your local Verizon store. Compare your LCD with a display unit.
I saw the perfect screen today at another local store. This one was on a black mini.
Not too warm, not too cold but just right. Also noticed the contrast wasnt too rich and it had a nice color balance.
If my screen ever breaks, i would love to swap out this LCD for that one.
How difficult is the droid screen swap compared to other larger smart phone screen swaps?

Screen pressure under front camera?

On the top left corner of my screen on the nav bar, right below the camera/proximity sensor I see what appears to be just a slight bit of pressure on the screen causing it to be slightly brighter . It's barely visible, and I'm not talking about the light bleed issue from the secondary display, because this is on the other side. It's very faint, and I can't see it when the screen background is dark or if the screen is off. It can best be seen by tilting the phone forward.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Yes I have a black bar under my front camera, proximity sensor area. If I look up from bottom to top of screen it's lighter. I had mine warrantied out today from T-Mobile
I had that issue with my first V20 from AT&T. I went to AT&T and they changed it out at no cost. I get a new one and it has a new screen 'pressure' located on the bottom corners. Makes black look a little grey in the corners.
It's on mines also, but it's a dark spot instead of a brighter spot. Right above over the status bar, you can even see it in white pics too. Wanted to send it to LG so I can get a replacement but want to know if it's fixable first.

I have this too and I wonder if it is from the CPU/GPU heating up. If you look at the ifixit teardown, that is approximately where the heat outlets. I have it on mine. It was day 1 and I was flashing some roms.

Yeah it's mostly when I flash ROMs especially AOKP or LOS. I'm thinking it's a backlight problem, because when I go back to stock it doesn't show... And it could be the CPU/GPU also because during flashing ROMs that part specifically gets warm.
Maybe you are right. I didn't see it in stock but it's super prominent in LOS. I was flashing roms for like 4 hours though. Not sure what is the exact issue.

Alright so I reverted to stock and locked the bootloader and everything. That dark spot is just as present in the stock ROM. The T-Mobile store representative agreed it was an issue. Now I gotta ship it back and wait for the replacement. Just got it a day ago man. :crying:
JFYI...have it here too.
My replacement V20 has the exact same thing?!?! Dark spot in the middle of the status bar on white (or lighter) screens. What is weirder is that it is the exact same pattern and location as the first one. It is present in both stock and LOS. I have that same issue ^ not as burnt though but same place and shape. No screen retention at all from what I can tell, just this!
Hasn't bothered me enough yet to do anything, can only really see it on white screens.
Same
It isn't pressure spots - it's IPS light bleed. With regards to the darker patch just underneath the second screen - this is because of light differences between the main panel lighting and the second screen lighting (and again, because it is IPS, the light bleeds over if the second screen is brighter than the main screen).
