While the announcement takes place on 22nd July, the Tegra K1 powered Shield tablet won’t hit the market until 29th July in the US/Canada market followed by Europe launch in August 14th and availability will be expanded to more regions in Fall 2014. The Shield tablet will be available in two variants, a 16 GB WiFi model which will retail at $299 US and a 32 GB LTE model which will retail at $399 US. The Shield tablet will also come with additional accessories such as a wireless shield controller and a shield cover which will retail for $59 and $39 respectively.
Coming to the specifications, the Shield tablet is impressive considering it features the Tegra K1 SOC which was unveiled by NVIDIA at CES 2014. From a technical perspective, the NVIDIA Shield Tablet boasts the Tegra K1 SOC with 192 Kepler GPU cores and a 2.2 GHz Quad Core Cortex A15 CPU. This along with 2 GB memory offers better performance than the competitors in the same price range. For connectivity, NVIDIA Shield Tablet offers Wi-FI + LTE on the 32 GB variant which is priced at $399 US while the $299 variant will only feature Wi-Fi connectivity.
The display used on the Shield Tablet is an 8 Inch Full HD IPS LCD which features a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1200. This is a well added display considering a smaller display would have wasted the potential of the Tegra K1′s SOC in gaming and other applications. Now users can fully unleash the gaming performance of this tablet since it is from its core, a gaming product. The Tablet comes with a DirectStylus 2 included (in-holster) which can be used on the display for writing and painting if you don’t want to use touch. Audio is offered by Front facing stereo audio speakers with dual bass reflex port and connected via a 3.5 mm jack. Back in the original Shield, NVIDIA had one of the best audio design for a hand held device and this could be another win when it comes to audio.
Gaming features have been a core part of the Shield devices and NVIDIA’s Shield Tablet aims on reintroducing and refining each single one of them by adding Shield Wireless Controller compatibility, NVIDIA GameStream, NVIDIA Shadowplay, Grid Cloud Gaming, Console Mode, Gamepad Mapper and Tegra Zone. The Shield Tablet will provide a video output of 4K Ultra-HD in console mode which is amazing while the cameras include a front 5 Megapixel HDR and a rear 5 Megapixel auto-focus HDR. The Wi-Fi range is 802.11 a/b/g/n 2×2 MIMO (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) and additional connectivity options include Bluetooth v4.0 LE, GPS and a 9 axis G-Sensor. The Tablet also supports Micro-Sim and a Micro SD card which can expand storage up to additional 128 GB. Battery life is said to last 10 hours is HD video playback and offered by a 19.75 Watt / hour lithium ion cell. There’s also Mini HDMI 1.4a and Micro-USB 2.0 with host and device support. NVIDIA aims to deliver OTA updates directly from their servers so that your device carries the latest firmware and OS updates directly from the manufacturer.
The wireless controller or the Shield controller is an interesting addition to the Shield Tablet. The original shield did come with its own controller but this time, since we are looking at a tablet form factor, NVIDIA decided to offer the controller as an add-on at a price of $59. It comes with Wi-Fi connectivity and includes built-in stereo headphones with headphone and microphone jack. Micro-USB 2.0 connector for charging and wired gaming. It has several buttons which are used for input and comes with a rechargeable Li-Ion cell. The Wireless controller is not only compatible with the tablet but the portable shield too. In terms of performance, the Tegra K1 is faster than its competitors featuring all the great technology support of Kepler GPUs such as OpenGL ES 3.1, AEP, OpenGL 4.4, DirectX 12 API, Tessellation, CUDA 6.0 and a power consumption of less than 2W which is mind blowing. May you use it as a console, as a handheld device, as a streaming box or a personal smartphone, the Shield tablet is definitely a formidable opponent in the tablet industry. :

I am definetly interested on it but I do not yet understand what market they are targeting with a tablet. I do not see a reason for me to pick up the tablet over the Shield to play games other than the processor and bigger screen(1080p).

It will be a killer tablet, but I can already get games to work fine with different controllers with my Note 2014.
Still prefer the Shield for integrated controller, but this does look like a killer tablet.
16gb for the wifi ONE YEAR later is an absolute insult for a serious gaming device. Most will likely hold out for the 32gb LTE version.

I kind of want it but more of as an upgrade for my Note 10.1, 2012. Hopefully the stylus is decent. I'm still hoping for an xperia play like device though (built-in controller). Hopefully the LTE works in my country.

Well I would have much rather enjoyed a device with built-in gamepad, but I am ready to start throwing my $$$ at my computer screen. If I can pre-order this device, I probably will.

I'm late to the Shield party, but I want this tablet. K1 and 1080p is where I want to be for emulation.

I'm going to be buying this as a present for a family member.
here is hoping that it will be easy to root because I need SU access to do some work on it for em.

I'm all over this. I'd prefer 4:3 as I'm mainly using it for browsing/reading but I guess I'll take 16:10 since I can't find a 4:3 tablet I'd want.
I was waiting for the Nexus 8/9 but who knows when that's coming, could be waiting forever like the people waiting for the next Nexus 10.
Looking forward to getting this next week!

yeah we just ordered one tonight for 331 shipped.
it claims on other sources that the processing power is higher than a ps3 and xbox 360 respectively, pair that with the 120gb sd card micro slot and the amazing screen with crystal clear visibility and contrast ratio. this is the best tablet we're going to see for a while.
also wanted to mention that the stylus is very good from what i've seen. its included in the bundle too.

I can't seem to find the lte version anywhere for pre-order. I wonder if it's compatible with T-Mobile.
Sent from my XT1060 using Tapatalk

I wonder if Trine 2 works with the original Shield, I'm guessing it's probably not, i think it's exclusive to the K1, but still...

I dropped a pre-order on this about half an hour after the announcement, long enough to read a bit of the press, but I was pretty much always grabbing this day one.

Nope, I want 1080p. Perfectly sufficient for gaming, higher resolution just taxes GPU more in emulation. Also higher resolutions will be wasted on for me for quite sometime as they will have no relevance for mirroring as I plan to stick to 1080p TV and monitors for some time yet.

I was just saying as the shield tablet has a 1440p screen resolution, as for the GPU, its basically a mobile gtx 780, so its not taxing, it gets 45k+ on antutu, its powerful enough, if you use a resolution changer, you can see original shield can play fluent 1080p gaming (on one f'ing core) according to the core analyzer i used, only one game had performance issues, which was dead trigger 2 max settings 1080p, as for emulation, a tricking Samsung gear can play any kind of emulator, come on, unless you are using ppsspp, no android device can seem to keep up with that emulator at a stabl framerate

Um, the Shield tablet does not have a 1440p resolution. It's 1920x1200 (and mirrors at 1080p in console mode).
Regards emulation, yes I am using PPSSPP and I look forward to seeing what the K1 can do with it (at 1080p). Also, I look forward to seeing Dolphin run Gamecube games on the K1, and again, I don't want to lose performance for a needlessly higher screen resolution in these more demanding emulation situations (check YouTube for videos from the Dolphin dev using a straight port of it on a K1 development board, already in that unoptimised state looking pretty good with some games like Mario Kart)..

hi guys
I want to ask a question about this tablet as they are very concerned.
i want to know if the new shield tablet LTE is able to make and receive telephone calls in italy.
WHAT CELLULAR NETWORKS DOES THE SHIELD TABLET LTE SUPPORT?
There are three versions of SHIELD tablet LTE. There is a North American version that works on AT&T, T-Mobile and Rogers on LTE bands 2, 4, 5, 7, and 17 and HSPA bands 1, 2, 4, 5.
There is a second International version that works on popular European and Asian networks. It supports LTE bands 3, 7, 20 and HSPA+ bands 1, 2, 5, 8.
The third version also works on popular International carriers, in addition to including voice support on compatible networks. It supports LTE bands 1, 3, 7, 20 and HSPA+ bands 1, 2, 5, 8.
Check with your favorite carrier to verify coverage in your area.
DOES THE SHIELD TABLET LTE SUPPORT VOICE?
There is a version of the international SKU that supports voice on compatible networks, available for purchase in select regions.

1080p is perfect for an 8" device for gaming. Much better battery life and performance.

Ordered a Tegra Note from newegg. Deal was too hard to pass up. Also Pre-ordered this bad boy! Now that i have been thinking about it, i might not keep the TN7, either return or sell new in box never opened.
Release date is just around the corner! Getting Excited!

Anyone here planning on using the Nexus 4 to display its screen onto a Miracast TV?

http://www.theverge.com/2012/10/29/...yboard-multiple-users-photo-sphere/in/3335719
The highlight is support for Miracast, an industry-standard Wi-Fi display sharing protocol that allows new devices like the Nexus 4 to stream audio and video to TVs. (Think AirPlay with broad industry support.) Miracast boxes for existing TVs are expected to go on sale from a variety of companies soon, and Google expects them to cost well under $99. And Miracast will soon be built directly into TVs, which is pretty exciting — LG's already committed to building it into all of its 2013 smart TVs. The technology worked quite well in our demo of Android 4.2 on a Nexus 4, and Google says developers can use each screen independently for big-screen gaming and other apps.

Seems like you could do this with your Nexus 4 and play gaming emulators with a bluetooth game controller on your big screen TV wirelessly :victory:
I wonder how well the n64 or Playstation emulators run on the 2gb of ram + S4 Pro cpu?
Is Miracast a brand of TV? I was try to find some information about this, but I don't think it's out yet. Is it more of a device like the Apple TV that our device will link to, or would it be more like an Apple TV sort of thing? Either way, I've never really tried Wi-Fi direct or any branch of it so I guess I'm excited.
Wi-Di
It looks like the Newest Intel Wi-Di software supports Miracast as well.
Looks like I'm buying a Miracast adapter now.

My Xperia Play with Qualcomm 1ghz cpu and old ass Adreno 205 gpu can handle N64 and PSX games. I get 1000fps in 2d PSX games with my previous Galaxy S3 which has quadcore Mali-400 gpu. I don't think the S4 Pro and its new Adreno GPU which is supposed to be just as fast or faster will have any problem.
I do plan to get the Nexus 4, but I still prefer my Xperia Play for classic gaming.

Interesting. It's been awhile since I've used android so I wasn't sure. So you can play Final Fantasy 7 with no hiccups and the music is in sync? I remember when I could play FF7 and I wasn't sure if the hardware wasn't fast enough or if the emulator needed to be updated and tweaked.
Any emulator you would recommend for FF-7 or Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time?
The Play can handle those games. FPSE is probably the best PSX emulator, if you turn off framelimiter it can go over 100fps. The touchpad (joystick) is working too, but it depends if the app support it or not. For N64 I use N64oid, it might not be 100% smooth on some games, but playable for most, I suspect Mupen64Plus could be faster. I also recommend emulators made by "explusalpha". Anything 2D can be handled easily.
This device doesn't seem to have TV output though. Also you can't have too big hands because the gamepad is a bit on the small size so you might get cramp over long sessions. It might be better to get a bluetooth gamepad in that case.
You can get a refurb Verizon Play for very cheap on ebay right now. But if you want to install custom rom, only the international (R800i) can unlock its bootloader (without paid service), because the Play required flashing the kernel separately by fastboot in order for the rom to boot.
Otherwise, this phone have similar spec to the HTC Nexus One, so its quite underpowered by today standard. It does have have nice stereo speakers and excellent sound quality. It's camera is a bit less detailed than the Galaxy Nexus, but actually perform better over different lighting. It even support GLONASS.
I have an iControlPad, which also an excellent bluetooth gamepad, but I never use it with the convenience of the Play.

1.2 Ghz i.mx6q Quad Core SOC(running at 996 Mhz)
GC2000 Vivante Quad Core GPU
1GB RAM
8GB internal storage
Wifi b/g/n(up to 150Mbps)

usb 2.0 Host port(full size)
Micro-usb port for power
Micro sd slot for external storage.
male HDMI 1.4 port
hidden reset button
Charger/micro usb cable
HDMI extension cable
Android 4.0.4
I've been testing a beta hardware GK802 for a couple of weeks now and have known about it for a few months.
Over at armtvtech we've worked with geekbuying to fix some firmware/hardware bugs and now it's a pretty stable device.
It's also my favorite Android TV stick to date. I just ordered one of the production models today.
Unlike the rockchip based sticks this one actually switches resolutions properly.
I haven't had any wifi signal drops, or lowered speed while using this stick.
Video playback is great and in sync. I've actually used BS Player and Dice Player to play 2 1080p mkv's at the same time with no apparent frame drops or issues.
Netflix works like a charm.
The internal NAND is actually a micro sd card that can be removed if you open the unit up. I've made several backups of my micro sd using dd in ubuntu. I've also replaced my micro sd with a larger and faster 16GB UHS-I and it was much more responsive. I used Gparted to increase the size of my partitions.
The i.mx6q actually supports linux. Freescale has builds that can run x11 w/ hardware acceleration. They also support hardware acceleration with Gstreamer for videos. It's just a matter of getting the u-boot on the internal micro-sd setup, and building a kernel that supports the built in wifi.
I've actually been working on getting ubuntu running properly on my GK802. I have it booting, but I need my usb to 3.3v serial adapter to arrive so I can check/set/make a properly working uboot.(mostly so I can change the kernel location and run a custom kernel with working wifi)
Kernel/Android/Linux sources are available from Freescale. They are gearing up for the i.mx6q to be a long term SOC so we will be seeing future software updates.
There's a copy of this device called the Hi802. It will not be receiving the same updates or support as the GK802.
It's slightly cheaper, but they basically stole the design and shopped it out at trade shows.
It also won't be featuring the same usb cable/charger needed to update the firmware through the pc as the GK802 has.
I highly recommend you go with the original GK802 over the slightly cheaper copy.
The copy can't even offer a warrenty, let alone support for the device.
I want, but I wonder when will these go on special.
Did you order one?
I ordered one. I've also got a pre production GK802 sitting in front of me.
In case your wondering I also own (3)UG802, (1)MK808, (1)MX1, (1)MK802 III, (1) Oval Elephant, and a CX-01.
I've made kernels and custom firmwares for the rk3066 sticks.
I tend to go through all these sticks looking for something a bit better and I think I've found it with the GK802.

Cool. I'd like to hear your impressions of the GR802
Sent from my GT-P3113 using Tapatalk 2
I'm basically in awe over this stick.
It's much smoother than the rk3066 sticks.
However the benchmarks are not much better. This can be explained:
The rk3066 dual cores usually operates at 1.2 to 1.6Ghz. They get antutu scores ranging from 6800 to 9900.
The i.mx6 quad core in the GK802 operates at 996Mhz(it is a 1.2GHz chip). It gets scores of around 10430 at 720p and 9980 at 1080p.
Video playback is great! Audio/Video look to be nearly perfect if not perfectly in sync.
It can playback with hardware decoding in Dice Player, MX Player, BS Player and more.
Netflix works like a charm as usual.
When doing software decoding in XBMC beta 2 I can playback 720p without alot of frame drops. Very watchable.
Avi, smaller mkv's/mp4's also playback great in XBMC beta 2.
Youtube was working great until the last update from play store, now I can't seem to find the fullscreen button. I solved this by sideloading an older verison.
I really enjoy the removable internal storage. I've made dd backups for myself.
I'm also working on getting freescale's ubuntu release running.
The internal wireless has a pretty decent range. It can connect to my router at 150Mbps through 2 "wifi troubled" rooms.(aka wifi zone of death)
Being able to switch resolutions is a huge plus. The rk3066 stick can't do this yet.
All in all I've found this stick to be more stable than my others. Which is surprising considering that it's brand new to the market.
I'm recommending it to everyone I know. Especially anyone that runs linux, because that is a huge thing in my community.
This coming week I'll be doing a full review with pictures and screenshots. I just need my new GK802 to get here!
Cool. Thanks for the review.

Hi deadhp1,
I saw a video about it in Youtube, is it correct that GK802 runs ICS instead of JB? Because of this, I'm delaying to get one. I have an iMito with JB, it's a lot smoother compared to those ICS sticks.
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using XDA Premium HD app
The Gk802 is indeed based on ICS. Freescale has not released a JB port....yet.
I found the GK802's ICS experience to be just as smooth, if not smoother than any of my JB sticks.
I have the iMito MX1, and at real 1080p the GK802 is smoother.
I also have several other sticks including ug802, mk808, mx1, mk802 III, cx01, oval elephant. The GK802 beats them all hands down.
In other news I've soldered the 3.3v serial lines on my GK802 and have gotten access to the u-boot options.
I used the FTDI 3.3v Basic Serial to USB adapter from sparkfun and connected 3 wires the rx/tx, tx/rx, gnd/gnd wires.
After that I setup minicom to access it over ttyUSB0 115200, 8n1, no soft/hard flow control.
I had to hexedit the stock u-boot to change the bootarg "bootdelay=0" to "bootdelay=5" otherwise I couldn't interrupt the u-boot process.
I've been able to use the stock u-boot to boot the kernel included included in this release for the Nitrogen6x.
http://boundarydevices.com/latest-freescale-ubuntu-i-mx6/
I'm still stuck on the waiting for root filesystem, so my bootargs need some work.
After that's done it should be easier to compile a new u-boot with proper bootargs built in.
deadhp1 thanks for letting us know about the performance of the quadcore! I've got the MX1 (with the most recent firmware) and i love it. I saw that geekbuying was releasing the Zealz GK802 and thought about getting it but wasn't sure until someone reviewed the device. I look forward to your review of the device!
Have you tried playing shadowgun deadzone one there?

What would nice is to know if the wifi signal strengh is good and if it doesn't drop.
The Hiapad Hi-802 looks exactly the same?
Hi,
do we know if we can use the GK802 fw on a Hi802 stick?
I believe I have placed my order to quick and I took the Hi802 for its design rather then the GK802
So any chance to use the GK802 updates/fws?
Thanks
Amazing, quad core in a stick, I will need to look into this. Thanks OP.
EDIT: didn't realize my topic w already discussed and answered. That's what i get for researching on my phone. Removed...
Broken Recovery Button:
deadhp1,
Could you post a card image with your new rooted firmware and updates. Then, I could dd on to the internal card? If I can not get the image I can not update my new device. My button is broke.
full internal micro-sd image posted up on my forum
http://www.armtvtech.com/armtvtechforum/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=1113
It's got the 12-13-2012 update applied to it, rooted, and play store fixed.
I'll try to make a new full image with the 12-20-2012 update applied tomorrow sometime!
In other news I'm making a bit more headway into getting linux to run on this thing. I still need to build a properly working kernel and uboot.
I soldered serial lines to my beta GK802 and am using that for testing. My production GK802 is mostly stock and kicking butt!
great work deadhp1, ur the reason im getting/trying to get this, Any 1 here want to explain uk taxes/fees for this item to a Recognized Contributor aka me?

I haven't tried the RC11 model(I'm not a big fan of air mice), but I do have the RC12 with the touchpad(no air mouse). It works great with the GK802.
I can't see why the RC11 air mouse wouldn't work. It's almost the same model...even the box is the same.
Is this deal for essentially the same device? (They say 4 days left, and it's a whole dollar cheaper!) The branding is different but the specs look the same.

Edit: Tegra 5 = Tegra K1
But it's probably never happen. They should release Tegra K1 in end of the 2014 Next NVIDIA fail!
And the power consumption is 5W AMD and Intel has max 4W and usually about 2W.
But AMD Mullins look pretty good and Intel Silvermont is looking also good.
Main picture of OUYA on this forum should be this:
You're blowing my mind man!! It would be amazing if that ever happened.

I think Tegra 5 can be even more awesome, because Apple's 64bit processor, Tegra 5 could be 64bit too and 64bit Android and OUYA 2  :fingers-crossed: Maybe more than 4GB RAM
I really doubt want to interrupt your dreams, but this doesn't sound realistic to me.
Besides that, ouya never tried to deliver extreme performance with cutting edge hardware. It's main purpose is a solid platform for independent games of which very little rally need the power tegra 3 could really deliver. I think tegra4 or even snapdragon 600 or 800, 2gb team 32 gb rom at max do sound way more realistic. But I doubt they can stay below 100 bucks then.

Sorry for a bummer but OUYA is all about indie and retro games. Get a PS4 if you want Real gaming.
BTW, if you wish to run graphics hungry games on OUYA, change HDMI output to 720p (using Xposed mod), it will give you atleast 30fps in games like Asphalt 8. Makes me more than happy.
thats a shame and I hope it changes it's marketing on that.

There is no working resolution at 720p. Check it with CPU-Z and test in Nenamark you will get same FPS. True 720p is in Tegraoverclock for OUYA, but there is not fullscreen because of Android 4.1. You should look in Tegra Overclock OUYA thread.

It's a nice thought. But there would need to be a decent game line up before I throw my money at another dust collector

Yes They screwed me up.
Everyday I play lagging GTA SA or can't play movies form USB 3.0 I get mad. I hope EPRJ going to help us.
But something like OUYA with Tegra K1 (please be powerful not like Tegra 3 or 4), with CM 11 and ultimate custom kernel :fingers-crossed:
I really hope that OUYA goes for the Tegra K1.
Just got an OUYA for Christmas BTW. Loving every minute of with this little machine.
No Need for ouya 2
I think the ouya tegra3 quadcore has Power enough.
Theres actually no need for better CPU Specs.
But often buggy Software should proceed and the laggy controller shoud reworked

Both are old and weak considering a three year old chipset. My S4 as example plays all newer 3d games and emulators like MAME and PSP much smoother at twice the res of my Tegra 3 devices.
Likely option is for the O2 (if one is ever released) to have a low cost, but MUCH more capable S600 in it. That is if $99 is the price point.

RK3288 look better with Mali-T76x
Would never waste my money on another ouya unless it runs stock android and I can run STANDARD ANDROID apps on it. Most disappointment i have ever had with a piece of hardware. I am all for android consoles I have been thinking about what i would do with one since the ouya was announced and even though i own an ouya i still havnt done the things that i was planning on doing. I do them with my tablet connect to hdmi but the ouya has no standard framework so loading apps is a finger crossed while praying affair and 75% of the standard apps don't work. Hell it cant even play games that my nexus 7 plays, modern combat perfect no lag on highwith nexus 7 on ouya with low settings it studders the entire time and is barely playable same with gta san andreas, hey but at least those two games work unlike the other 90% of gamepad supported android games that dont even load. Whoever releases the K1 in a console that runs stock android first is who is gonna get my next android purchase preorder.

I'm with you about to put mine on craigslist. It wasn't a bad console but the game selection is what killed me. When I saw titles like shadowgun I thought other companies would be able to easily port their games to it but...... well you know the rest.
Even an Ouya with Snapdragon 800 would be a lot better than with Tegra 3.
many games lag on the current Ouya, even N64 emulators could run better.
I'd gladly have an Ouya with better hardware specs to use ppsspp properly.

Kernel hacking
I don't think so I think the fast charging is a feature built in to the Qualcomm chips.

For me is 3 things that are causing noise:
1) The pixel density is what's causing the first impact (not in a good way) in me. I'm no expert when it comes in judging screen but when other devices with far smaller screens as well as devices that have been in the market for a long time come up with much higher densities, it does make you wonder about this brand new flagship device that only offers 281 ppi. (And please, spare me the explanation about how irrelevant pixel density is in relation to the smaller screen sizes, I understand that).
2) Also, the 2GB RAM (as opposed to 3).
3) The portability aspect of such a big device: the physical size and weight seem to be a concern, specially when you're upgrading from the fantastically compact Nexus 7 (2013).
edited: I forgot about a 4th thing that has me deeply disappointed:
4) Lack of wireless Qi-charging capability.
But who are we kidding, being the nerds we are, we know most of us here will be getting one regardless.
Its not quad core denver chip but dual core denver chip
I agree on #1 and #3.. This is a step backwards from the DPI on the N7 and at 425g its pretty much the same as a 9.7 inch Ipad air (437g)

I like the 4/3 form factor. Only time I have used this form factor on a tablet was on an Ipad. I personally don't like Ipad but one thing I loved is that form factor. Easier to hold and work with.
Android L looks good. I can't wait to see how fast the K1 will be using ART.
Funny to see that the N9 camera will protrude from the tablet a little bit, like on the new Iphone 6 (Iphone users complained about this). I personally don't care but I'm sure some future N9 users will complain about it.
Camera is not the best but hey, who brings a tablet to take pictures? Grab your DSLR or your phone Pple looks so stupid when taking picture using a tablet..lol. This also makes me think about something else. Why not putting a better resolution camera on the front? Personally, when I'm using my tablet camera, It's for Skype. I never took a picture using the main camera, Imo, the 8 Mp camera should be front facing so we can have descent video resolution when skyping.
2 Gb of ram is enough for me, especially when using "pure" android (no Sense or TouchWizz UI). 3Gb of ram would have raised the price too much and most users don't need 3gb.
Polycarbonate cover:
HTC were so excited when they announced that the One X was getting a uni-body poly-carbonate shell back in 2012. This polycarb. design caused so much trouble with that phone, the polycarb. body was somewhat flexible and caused bad electrical contact between main board and antennas glued inside the polycarb cover. (i.e the infamous Wifi issue of the One X) I personally don't thrust polycarb anymore, I prefer aluminium body like the M7/M8. Hopefully, they have designed the N9 so that problem will not occur again...
Tegra K1 CPU:
I also had bad experience with Tegra CPU on my One X. They announced the Tegra 3 (in 2012) to be a powerful quadcore CPU with very good power consumption using a battery-saver "companion" core to handle low-power tasks when 4 cores are not required (standby mode, playing music etc etc). Performance wasn't there (compared to the qualcomm equivalent of that year) and power consumption was really bad. I was very disappointed by Tegra CPU. Also used a Tegra 2 on my gf's Asus TF101. I prefer qualcomm cpu, much faster and power friendly. It also looks like there is more development for qualcomm CPU than Tegra CPU. But K1 is ready and Qualcomm's 810 isn't, so yes the K1 will be to most powerful chip on the mobile market, but im not optimistic about power consumption where the 810 will probably be much better when released.
Overall I think it will be a very good tablet keeping in mind that this tablet is designed for the average consumer and not for enthusiast.
edit:
front facing speakers (boomsound) will be awesome!
a bit bummed out on only 2gb ram, no qi charging, lowish dpi but am ordering it anyways...
do really like turbo charging, ac wifi, bt apt-x, htc design and big battery...
I hate that they went big with both the 6&9. The 7" fit perfectly for my needs. Oh well...
4x3, front facing speakers, and stock Android? WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE!?!?
This tablet will be a huge hit, despite the less-than-record-setting specs. I do wish it were cheaper, but I think people who do buy it will love it.
And it's time for 16x9 tablets to die. I hope this is the start!

4:3 is what I've been looking for in a tablet as one of my main uses for it as a medical professional is reading PDFs on the go. 16:9 or 16:10 is not the aspect ratio for reading letter-size PDFs, but it could be managed on the larger >10" tablets. Up to this point, the iPad was the best device for consuming PDFs, but now I have another choice on the market to take a look at.

I too have been waiting for a 4/3 android option without resorting to cheapo Chinese tablets without after sale service. And to those who will explain you that 16/9 is better for movies, that is a very limited point of view in my opinion : how do iPad users do ? I mostly watch movies on my tablet in my bed, with other lights off or very dimmed, so I just can't see the bezel anyway and will gladly have a much better format for books and Internet consumption !
It's not THAT different from most other phones, but I like the size.
I hope it's dual core and not quad core so it's finally worth investing for real.
What I like:
- Tegra K1 - 'nuff said
- Android apps will automatically compile to 64bit when installed on it. The beauty of Dalvik/ART :')
- 4:3 screen - FINALLY an android tablet for working people. Working with PDFs and documents will be an absolute joy with this.
- Android updates
Cons:
- Limited storage -- what's the point of having all that power if you don't have enough storage for content to make use of it. HD games and videos use a LOT of space.
Even Apple realised that and dropped $100 off 64 and 128GB models
- eMMC 4.51 -- which peaks at 200MB/s is significantly slower than other flagships. My iPhone 5S gets over 360MB/s read speeds in benchmarks.. SSD-speeds really.
- 2GB RAM, unlikely to be a problem in the near future.
- Too expensive for what it has to offer.
All in all, I think its the best android tablet on the market now. Sad to see it out powered by the iPad Air 2 only a day after release though the difference is only minimal.

but right now I'm satisfied with the firetv I got XBMC on there and all my repos

I agreed, It probably locked bootloader and unless Google changed their mind letting us have a unlock bootloader = addicted flasher custom ROM. I might email some google developers and see what their response regard the bootloader status.

While the idea of a stock google variation interface is appealing, the less ram, lack of hardwire ethernet and even less buttons on remote make it a significantly less attractive candidate IMO for XBMC, I'll stay with my fire TV (especially since I'm lucky enough to have 3 of them with root and CWM already w/blocked updates)

100% sure? Google TV and Chrome products have been locked down. ChromeBook and Chromecast. This device is called a Nexus, and i cant name one Nexus device that is locked down. Less Ram: Good point, but one of the android forums mention this wont be a problem with the intel chip. Time will tell.
lack of hardwire ethernet: the fire tv has FastEthernet which is limited by 100, Wireless N gives fastethernet a run for its money and this device supports AC. Way faster than fastethernet.
I will be giving it a shot I think. Need an extra unit for the bedroom TV anyway. Will wait to see if it is rootable first though I think

Fine and dandy, but qualcomm sux for Reicast and Dolphin Emulator.
Also reboots when heavy 3D "three js" games are played. (it was an HD 3D racing game in three js)
New Google:1GB RAM
Not enough RAM so,it sux (if more than FTV original price),nuff said.
Graphics unknown status by Dolphin Emulator devs, does it handle Reicast?
What use is x86 for Wine to run Windows programs like PJ64 when you have a crappy limit of 1GB RAM?
Where is Google's Android TV with Nvidia Tegra K1 people were promised?

This is only one device released by google, nvidia could release their own android tv device along with htc, samsung, acer, asus, motorla, hisense.... Etc... Even though i doubt nvidia will release a box since they already sell an nvidia shield tablet (which doesnt support dts pass through). Even though im sticking with my firetv i am interested to see others join. Especially if this pushes amazon to properly support vc1, 24p, 4k, dts-hd/truehd, 802.11ac.
I don't think you guys are remembering exactly what "Nexus" means. It means do whatever you want to the device.
Yes the Nexus 7 was locked but they made it easy to unlock for us to mod. The whole nexus line is the play ground line if you want to mod and have fun with your device.
I for one am going to be jumping ship because quite frankly, Amazon has, and always will be, absolutely garbage when it comes to making anything interface related. Their app sucks, their web interface sucks, their amazon fire TV interface sucks, everything they design is garbage when it comes to UI.
I've had a blast with this device but with them locking it down...no bueno.
As per the wireless worry, it's 5GHz AC. If you're doing anything that's going to be able to tax THAT, having an ethernet cable isn't going to save you.

Not exactly. Bootloader is still locked.
Despite my hatred of the small RAM size...
Since Nexus Player is x86 and it has an Intel Atom chipset, does that mean it utilizes the Houdini processing for running arm apps in the x86 architecture?
Still sucks because of crappy limit of RAM.
I saw that the price is going to be $99 like the Fire TV's original price.
Make a 2GB RAM version of Nexus Player for an extra $20.00 to make it more appealing.
Heck, replace them all with 2GB RAM for only $10.00 more cost.

1 GB is fine. Unlike phones we wont be multi-tasking as much. The Nexus Player will mostly only worry about the active application which is why 1 GB will be fine. As for the CPU its an Inel Atom which has been shown to run as fast as a Snapdragon 801, for comparison sakes the FireTV uses a Snapdragon 600.
Its not exciting enough for me to jump over to it. My AFTV is doing everything i need right now, not to mention the lack of ethernet is a deal breaker. Unless wireless AC has come down quite a bit in the last few months, Im not ready to make that move.
Will have to wait and see how the Nexus Player performs. But one major drawback I see already is the limited storage just like FireTV but no true USB socket. Why would i want to mess with a OTG cable even before having to deal with a USB Hub or just a USB device. MicroUSB on a phone is fine. But on one of of this devices is stingy. The Nexus Player is going to have to really WOW me to get me over the lack of a regular USB socket.

the specs are really irrelevant, this is the first entry into the android TV market (besides the ADT-1) sure, this box is specd a tad low and surely isnt going to be an enthusiasts dream machine, but im sure we arent going to see google release anything else anyways, what i do think well see is all the manufacturers incorporating android TV into their own players in the very near future (think a high specs "Samsung Galaxy Player" or something like "Sony Xperia Player") and if google is successful with their play services like music and video on demand like im sure they will be i think within the next year or so many TVs and things will be running android TV on them also. should be an exciting year for people who like android stb setups. they kinda failed before with googleTV or whatever it was but i think the timing is right this time and "android TV" is going to be the next big thing for internet media on demand lovers everywhere.

Would love to see one with OTA Antenna & PVR built in. Would be the perfect machine. For now a rooted FireTV will be the best for the price.
I'll wait for the actual user reviews to start showing up before I make a final decision, but at this point I'm leaning toward no. The biggest drawback to the FireTV for me is lack of storage. 8G is just not enough, I will not buy another FTV game until an official firmware update includes support for USB drives. Just a wild guess, but I suspect the Nexus Player has this same limitation. I'm willing to wait a bit longer and pay a bit more for a different Android TV box with better specs and hardware support.
