[Q] Did I break my camera after screen replacement? - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey there
Yesterday I replaced my screen + digitizer with a non-OEM screen (don't do this! not worth it at all! use OEM with it's hard glass). The repair was easy and accident-less. Absolutely everything works now except for the camera and its flash, with errors "Can't connect to camera" and a crash of the flashlight app respectively.
After googling about it, I've tried these solutions: soft reboot, bootloader reset, deleting camera app data, re-updating camera app, safe mode boot, uninstalling flashlight app and Nova Launcher.
After none of these worked at all, I teared my phone apart again to clean the connections with some ISO alcohol and cotton swabs. Didn't work. The only thing I've haven't tried is factory reset.
I may try the factory reset and use the opportuninty to flash Android L if there's no other solution suggested here.
ps: phone is really easy to repair.

Sounds like it. You exhausted all other options so something must've happened during the repair.

those connectors are really fragile, they might just have bended in a weird way for some reason. I once replaced a display on a nexus 5 which then wouldn't boot because the battery connector was forming an angle too steep.

thanks both for the answer,
my only doubt is that I cannot connect to neither of the cameras.
Anyway as there is no other solution I'll try what I said and will update my results.

Update:
I did a factory reset and it didn't work. The camera icon isn't present and when accessing it through the lockscreen it still can't connect.
There's more. I downloaded this app, Z - Device Test, to try to test the front camera.
The app indicates that there's no back nor front camera and no flash light.
It is very possible that the camera's flex cable was damaged by folding, but would that disconnect those other two components?

Hmm. I'm not sure if the front camera or flashlight are connected through the same ribbon cable, but I'm pretty sure they're not. That being said, maybe the software is coded so that if there is a hardware failure in one of the softwares functions (ie. front camera, rear camera, flashlight) than regardless of whether or not the rest of the components are functioning, the software will refuse to run. In your case, only the rear camera is possibly damaged, but the software refuses to run because one of its features are missing, even though the other 2 are perfectly fine. This may be completely wrong, I'm not an expert, but this is just what I think.

Thanks!
Yeah I think I'll risk buying a replacement camera, after all is only $8.
I hope it is what you said. The camera is very possibly broken because the cable was folded, if you look at my second pic of the OP, the "6" printed has a folding line through it.
Anyway I'm now taking advantage of my factory reset to flash Android L so that's cool... (I wasn't even rooted)
edit: Android L is nice!

Since both cameras are now dead and they were both working before I think it's far more likely you damaged the motherboard, seen it all the time on iphones.

Update:
I have installed a new camera and it doesn't work....
I'm now rooted with L Preview so I used CatLog to look for the error, I've found this related to the camera:
Code:
E/CameraService(192): CameraService::connect X (pid 10225) rejected (invalid cameraId 0).
W/CAM_CameraActivity(10225): Camera open failure: HIST_ID0_-1_1_HEND
W/CameraBase(10225): An error occurred while connecting to camera: 0

Did you ever get this solved? I recently replaced the screen with digitizer on my n5x and the cameras do not work now...

8525 camera is dying

My 8-month old (Cingular) 8525's camera is acting weirdo. [See below]. The viewscreen likewise has this kind of view. Moreover, I've noticed that since this happened, my battery life became CONSIDERABLY shorter, from 100% to shutdown in a matter of 8 hours standby. I could get 2-3 days out of my battery prior to this issue. Could this be a battery issue or something internal?

have you tried setting the camera settings to default? Also make sure that the bar inbetween the plus and minus signs at the bottom left corner area of the screen when the camera is on, make sure that the middle bar is selected and that the number above is 0, and not in the negative or positive. My contrast, or sharpness, or whatever that section symbolizes was in the negative one time, and I though that my camera sucked for about 2 days, before I fixed it back to zero.
A hard-reset did not fix it.
I feel this is not a software but a hardware problem. However it is most likely just that the push in connector for the camera has worked loose. (Not uncommon)
This is not a major dismantle:
Relevant pics:
Above: Back casing removed. The camera is shown with its connector disappearing below the scroll wheel assembly on the right.
Above here we see the camera connector above the scroll wheel connector shown as a white block.
Below the removed Scroll Wheel assembly. This was held in place by a single screw (Screw hole above beside connector)
Move to the next post - four picture limit so I need another post!!
Mike
Above you see the camera removed. The push in connector has multiple pins. To re-seat press in and pull out two or three times to ensure good contacts. Reseat firmly and re-assemble.
Mike
PS Don't forget that Macro button toggle arm is located properly before replacing back casing screws!!
I want to take out the 2mp camera from my 8525 (hermes) and put a 3mp camera instead possibly from the 8925 (tilt) has anyone tried this before please let me know I don't want to do this unless I know it can be done successfully.

The problem with giving advice on this is that without testing it, it's difficult to be sure where the problem lies.
I would take out the camera module again. Thoroughly clean the contacts - perhaps even with a mildly abrasive emery paper. (afterall it's not working anyway so not much to lose).
If that fails then I suspect the camera module needs replacing, BUT it might be a fault on the board it plugs into. For this reason it's probably more cost efficient to buy a camera module fro a Hermes that's being parted out for spares rather than buying a new camera.

Sorry, I don't know. I have my doubts that it would work and the two cameras have different specs. I think. You could check the Service Manuals for each to compare.

Thanks for the timely reply. I don't have access to the service manuals but I did look at the 8500 replacement parts lists and the camera was not listed. What is the going rate for a used 8500 unit for parts?

I imagine the prices vary quite a lot. Why not ask this guy:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=555602
Or look/ask in the Marketplace Forum here at XDA-Devs.
I can let you have Service Manuals if you PM me.

I was just informed that there was an 8500 which was an 8525 without a camera? Does the camera have any supporting motherboard hardware on this phone? Can I just drop in an 8525 camera unit?

Don't know, but if you use the 8525 manual to dismantle the 8500 (nothing major just back cover removal and scroll wheel board), then you will have your answer. Under the scroll wheel board should be a push in multi-connector for the camera. See pics above.
You would also need the camera software - but that's floating around here.

Thanks for the offer but I just picked up an 8500 with charger and headset for $15. Fair value is a descending line with the current economy and rate of obsolescence. I'll pm an offer and hope you don't get insulted.

You'd need to look under the Scroll wheel board on the 8500 to see if the multi-connector socket is present but unused. You can predict what it looks like by looking at the camera connector on page one of this thread. I think there is a good possibilitythat it is there because I have heard that in models with no front camera, the board does have the socket and a camera can be installed. Of course the problem is that you'd need a new rear cover.

mike i did what you told but nothing changed =( and finally i opened the cameras lens.in it there is only a cmos sensor..my question is where is the necessary chips or other stuff to work the camera? on the mainbord or cameras inside?

There are camera tweaks - I'd have to do searches on "camera fix" etc to find them. Have a look around, but remember, the Hermes camera is one that really only works well in good sunlight.

Build Quality

Hey there,
i've had my jade for about a week and i've come across three issues concerning the casing.
Issue #1: On the bottom of the Touchscreen, under the htc logo, just above the d-pad, there is a small bump which can be seen when looking at the screen's reflections.
Issue #2: The battery cover doesnt fit perfectly, on the left side it's perfectly flush but in the right side it sticks out a very small bit, but you can feel it when holding it in your hand, maybe because of that
Issue #3: When applying gentle pressure on that left side of the battery cover, it creaks. It really doesnt take much, it usually happens when writing sth with both thumbs and it is really annoying and gives the phone a low-quality impression.
I just wanted to ask if someone has come across the same or similar issues here, so i can find out if i got that one in a thousand and get a better one when returning mine...
#1: Not here
#2: Yes, only a very small bit. Doesn't bother me that much.
#3: I never noticed this until I tried it after your post. Doesn't bother me because it never happens when I use it.
I guess it could be worse.
Can someone please reply to my thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=463365 regarding the sound click issue ?
thanks for the answer, i just ordered myself a new one for comparing...
1/ Yes very slightly.
2/ Yes.
3/ No.

it looks worse on the picture than it really is because about half of the width is the camera's reflection...
I only detect issue #1.
About #2,3: The case seem very solid with no substantial gaps.
No bumps or any substantial gaps; the case does indeed creak, but i just noticed it reading your thread and trying it out.
almost perfect
Overall Build quality is okay,
But there are three important things made me disapointed..
1- Very bad operation of opening and closing of Back cover..
2- Nonhandy perimeter (chrome stripe) of the device.
3- Unreachable Softreset switch w/o opening back cover.
Near Perfect

Been using my black Jade for over 3 mnths now. love it. No defect detected yet. I think lilithpro's set is one of those that manage to sneak pass the QA team.
I think the designers forgot to put a hole on the backcover for easy soft reset.
The only problem I have is that I need to remove the back cover in order to change the mSD card or to perform a soft reset.
Ah, and of course that there is no Hard-SPL available so that I can flush the English ROM!.....

It seems like some others' sets have the same problems. Doesnt seem like an isolated issue.
I resolved it by ordering a new one, exchanging back covers, and returning the new one. Now the back cover fits perfectly, without any gaps and sounds. The little bump still exists, but doesnt bother me much.
I never open the back cover, the sim and µsd-card remain in the device, since the transfer speed via activesync and mass storage is really fast (it was horribly slow on activesync with my palm treo pro, and mass storage wasnt available), so the back cover is no problem for me.

G1 Camera colors gone all weird! *Pics inside*

Okay, so my G1's camera colors are all weird.
I bought this phone and it had older cyanogenmod in it, and camera worked all fine.
Then i updated to newer, still worked and suddenly now the colors are very weird.
Does this seem like a software or physical error?
And, any suggestions?
(also, i dont have any effects on when taking pics, tried to reinstall cyanogen, and do factory data reset. Ive also tried with a expiremental cyanogen and stable one.)
I have the same problem with my G1, also running Cyanogen (currently experimental). Flashing back to original 1.5 didn't fix the problem either.

Not helping..
what happens if you try one of the camera apps in the market??
i have the same f*ing problem. tried replacing the actual physical camera itself with a older spare one i had laying around and it actually would just force close on me before it could bring up an image. (maybe the spare camera i had was just broke)
i also tried flashing back to the old DREAIMG.nbh to get rid of root and everything else and the camera is still showing wierd colors (after i changed back to original camera hardware)

same thing happening to me too... everything was fine and then all of a sudden the camera is taking funky a$$ pictures with funky a$$ colors. lol my phone was perfect until i discovered this.... =[ anyone know how to fix it?
to the people who also have this problem, did any of you take your phone apart and put it back together? i did this once but not sure if it was taking it apart that ruined the camera or if it was flashing my phone that messed it up. cause i did both of these in the same day within an hour of each other so i have no idea whether it was the flash or the taking apart.
any insight would help... thanks!

hmm you may be onto something there...i took my phone apart as well to replace the housing a few days before i noticed the colors.
the little black screw that goes right near the camera got stuck to the camera 2 or 3 times because its magnetic. maybe this had something to do with it?
i bought another g1 today and tried replacing the camera but that wasnt the problem....
what i did was remove the whole lower part of the hardware (the green plate where the camera and keyboard thing connects... i dont know all the names for the parts lol) and switched it with the other phone. this worked for me.... so it was something that happened to that part of the phone i guess
now i have to root my phone again and start all over but at least my camera works! lol
I changed the housing on my iphone and messed up the camera like that
Just bumping this thread, to see if anyone has come up with a solution to this. I really do miss my camera..
I will send it on warranty sometime next week, see if they can/will fix it.
the same thing happened to my G1 camera!
I usually leave my phone in my pocket when I take showers and I think that the moisture inside the room somehow messed up my camera.
When it first happened, I turned off my phone and turned it back on. The camera was back to normal for a few days. After that, it went back to blurrs of blue and orange and its really annoying because the phone is fairly expensive and the camera messed up so easily.
I really don't know what to do about it except to take it to a t mobile store. Most likely I might have to get a new phone if other features mess up aswell.
bumping an old thread. anyone have a solution to this problem same thing happened to me
its a hardware problem It happened to me too. the lens is ****ed up. might need to replace.

just hot my hands on G1. had to take it apart, but i put it back together with the magnetic screw, and have the same weird color issue.. but over time, like a day, the camera wont even open. it says it has unexpectedly closed. i dont have any answers, but im gonna have to take it apart again and see if thats possibly the issue.
i got the same thing! pretty much it points to hardware problems. well, according to what ive been looking at. i tried fix_permission, i pushed a new camera apk & cleared data and im getting convinced its hardware

Grr, touchscreen issue + mic issue after update

The previous owner claims updating to 4.4.2 via odin gave him issues, "black screen of death". I managed to root it, philz it, and installed aosp rom fine. But touchscreen doesn't work at all, not even in philz touch.
Another problem is touchwiz roms dont work at all (as said above, the give you blank screens). If i'm on aosp rom instead, I can't install aosp kernels.
Ideas? I'm really mad atm, wasted whole day on this ****.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2787847
Ideas? Possible problems? Or are some of them wrong idk. Please give your input
1. Is new boot loader/old boatloads possibly and issue?
2..Knox?
3. SELinux?????
4. His software updating somehow led to hardware fault within the touchscreen.
5. Motherboard failure? Or some internal chip failure?
My failed attempts:
Flashing pit
Flashing modem
Flashing stock rom (leads to black screen) (it could be possible that it's only black screen due to not configuring the Samsung rom yet.
Flashing aosp (no touch)
Ideas? Anything would be helpful really...

Well it can be 2 things:
1. You are flashing roms for other devices on your phone.
2. The touchscreen is broken.

EDIT: Btw, when I'm on touchwiz, It shows the "select language" page for a split second, before showing the black screen with the clock widget.
Looking again at your screenshot I can see what the problem is.
It looks similair to my phone when I have the cover on it (S view)
It look like this:
My guess is that you have a hardware failure. It looks like the sensor that triggers it mailfunctions. Also I think that the digitzer is broken. I don't think it happenend after a flash, seems really unlikely.
Sounds more like just failing hardware or maybe even water damage.

Yeah I thought it looked like the sview interface as well. But how does the phone detect it's sview cover anyway? Proximity? If it's proximity, I tested the proximity sensor by installing "Android sensor box" and it seemed to work according to the app. All sensors work except "orientation" which is weird since I can tilt the phone into landscape mode.
Someone said it was magnetic sensor. Android sensor box shows it working. Unless it uses a separate proprietary magnetic sensor.

The "rebuild" went quite well as the only thing I was not able to disassemble from the old chassis are the pressure sensors: everything else I was able to disassemble and reassemble smoothly in the new chassis. The phone boots, the screen is ok even though it is an OEM one, speaker and microphone are working, physical and sensitive buttons too.
BUT (you saw me coming )
While I am pretty sure that I did not riped or damaged anything during the rebuild, the fingerprint scanner is not working anymore and the phone is now really really really (really) slow to charge... like 5 to - 6 hours to 100%
I've checked that every flat cable is correctly connected and they are. Then I tried:
To connect the old fingerprint scanner instead of the new one: it does not work anymore.
To connect the old battery instead of the new one: android still tells me that I am stuck with slow charge.
To clean the charging port (which was insanely full of stuff by the way ): still no fast charge.
To boot into recovery mode and clean the system cache: still the same.
I have the feeling that this is an Android related issue and not an hardware one but it is only a guess... and I don't know where to search now.
I hope someone will read this and have some advice
I just re-batt'd and new back on my HTC U11. Sorry I didn't replace the charge port PCB as well.
My $ is on that PCB, if you care to spend another $15 and dive in again.
Pretty sure the fingerprint thingy is tied to the same PCB.
Also, be sure you have FC 3.1 cable. I got my parts from Sunsky in China. I think about 2 weeks door to door.
But it will now be my b.u. as I bought a Pixel 5 to be the daily driver.
Thanks for your feedback! I don't mind diving in again, that's why I still haven't glued the back cover
How could I be sure that's the root cause?
No way I'm aware of, unfortunately.

So! I have finally been able to replace the daughter card and you were right, it solved almost all my issues: fast charge is back, microphone works.
Thanks for the tip!
The only thing that still does not work is the new fingerprint scanner. I tried to clear the system cache, clear the fingerprint scanner app cache, reboot the phone etc, nothing worked. In fact I cannot access the "fingerprint scanner" settings, it launches nothing when I press it.
I tried to connect the old fingerprint back and with this one I can access the menu... but it does nothing when I try to declare my fingerprints
I'm starting to wonder if this is not software related.
1st thought is to boot into safe mode and see if that clears the problem.
2nd thought is to back-up and factory reset and reinstall AOS 9.
I've tried to boot into safe mode with no luck... I'll try to factory reset this week-end!
So, did a factory reset this week-end and unfortunately the fingerprint scanner/home button is still not working
The only difference is that now the fingerprint scanner menu in the Android settings has now disappeared... which makes me think that the issue is software related. But the phone is old and I can't find similar problems: it's a shame!
