Anyone figure out a way to use NFC when the screen is off? I'd like to be able to use some NFC tags that I can swipe over and do some Home Automation stuff, but I'd prefer to not have to turn on, unlock, and then swipe.

You must be a hoot at parties!
Unfortunately, I already searched XDA and didn't find (hardy) anything that mentioned Galaxy S5. I did find one thread that specifically mentioned the Galaxy, but not Verizon. I tried it anyway, but it didn't work. Which of course prompted my thread, in a Galaxy S5 forum, specifically mentioning the Verizon version, asking if anyone had gotten it to work.
But hey, thanks for the link to a vague search on XDA about *all* devices and *all* carriers! That's extremely helpful there!

If you know of a specific solution to for Verizon S5, any chance you can point me to that rather than just a list of search results?
Okay, I found this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=54172523
I tested the version that is supposed to work with screen locked or screen unlocked (but not off), and that didn't work for me.
On a whim I tested the version that works with screen on, locked, or off, and that one seems to be working. So, if anyone else is looking for this for Verizon, this mod, which was technically made for T-Mobile version, should work for you.
Just go to the direct link above... no need to search or anything.

Guys, im the developer of Power Switch, an app that switches off your tablet's screen when you shut the case.
The main thread can be found here:

Ive had reports of problems with the tab's light sensor, so would appreciate some debugging feedback.
You can use the lite version to test, it has all the features, but just wont save as much juice.
Thanks in advance. Feel free to reply here or in the main thread, i read both regularly!

Yes we do. Maybe if there was some incentive to be your testers, like a free full edition, you might get some to actually be your "guinea pigs"
It works, but it will be much better if we can have a locking sound...

Oh wow, thats a great idea, never thought of it... i will definitely add this in the next release.
Almost done!
Updated, added screen locking sound
I just ordered a case, so I will gladly test this out once I receive it.
Just to let you know, I did try the full version of your app, but ultimately refunded it. It's a great concept, but just didn't work well on my A500. I don't know if our light sensor sucks or what, but the app wasn't detecting the cover being closed.
Anyone else having problems? Problems not related to not reading the instructions?
I'll try again with the Lite version, and see if I can configure it better. I did read the instructions, maybe I was just too quick to dismiss it.
I tried this on my Acer and the Acer cover, but didnt seem to work. Also tried the lite version. I did play around with the settings abit but still nothing. Sorry
Hey I have a suggestion. I apologize if this is already a feature as I did not see it in the other thread. But if you're able to trigger screen locks and sounds and such, why not also add the ability to have it turn off/on wifi and/or 3g?
Interesting... i will look into it, thanks!
Any issues to report?
Anything to report?
While toying with my LG G2, I managed to find a setting where I could lock down the phone's USB connection and prevent it from showing anything when connected to a computer if the screen is locked prior. The only way to get it to show on the computer was to actually unlock the phone first in which then once it shows you can lock it back.
I find this feature AWESOME (something I always wanted) because people wouldn't be able to just put my phone on their computer and copy my ish (well I'm sure you can get around it, but most 'regular' people wouldn't be able to figure it out) <-- by regular I mean not NERDS like us.
If anyone else has discovered this setting and knows how to get back to it, plz share. I been looking for it for awhile but have not been able to find it.

Yeah, it's definitely Stock. I found and tested it like wow this is kinda cool, then now that I want to turn it off temporarily due to a lot i'm going to be modding, I can't find the feature again, lol. I guess I could just turn the lock off in general for awhile... but I kinda don't want to, ya know?
If I figure out how I did it, I'll come back and post so you all will know. I think it's pretty good extra security personally. At least if you lose your phone and someone finds it, it gives you a bit more time to remotely wipe it.
Anyone know of any apps that would turn the hot spot on and off based off of a Bluetooth connection? I can't seem to find anything and I'm wondering if it's just not possible with this phone. I'm hoping it's not something that needs root to enable.

Have you looked into Tasker? I don't know if you can do it but I see a lot of people doing crazy things with it.

I did buy the app years ago, but never learned how to use it. Might need to do some searching, see if someone has done it out knows how to.

Don't worry it happen to me. Its very complex app.
bumping to see if anyone found anything that worked? I have been on a search and nothing seems to work. I was pointed to this post on Google+
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/tasker/q5uSgqtwBkY
I wanted to have a shortcut on my home to turn on and off hotspot but as a Verizon customers, I can not do that, I tried 10 different apps none of them worked, here is why
Verizon added a hook into hotspot functionality that check for subscription, so if you turn it on, it will check if you are eligible for hotspot (I am) and only then will turn the hotspot on, but while it check it turn it back off (so all the apps , I guess get confused, they turn it on, but it turned off immediately)

This is probably why a simple toggle in Tasker does not work.
I tried the settings as listed there, and still couldn't get it to work
Has anyone tried to use Android Pay on the F800K? I have tried it at a couple of stores and it keeps saying to tap again. When I tap I just set the phone on the reader and I can feel the phone vibrate so I assume it was at least trying to make the connection necessary for the transaction, but it's not completing.
I wanted to revive this one to see if anyone is using F800K with Android Pay. I am STILL having issues with it not working most of the time. I suspect that there is an issue with NFC on this phone. Android Pay seems to work when it wants to...
Forgive me if this is common knowledge (or completely bonkers) but I think I read somewhere that the small line/bar right above the middle of the camera bump is where the nfc is located in this phone.
I know nothing about Android pay because I've never set it up but (if I'm not remembering something that never happened) the way the person mentioned it seemed to me like that might be an uncommon place for it to be.
So on some random off chance that it may be helpful I figure it wouldn't help to mention it in case trying a different position on the card readers might help?
Hopefully this isn't the stupidest comment you've read all day... But if it is you can always have a laugh at my expense. lol
Who knows... Maybe I'm actually being helpful. If not... Sorry! Hope you get it figured out!

I have the ATT H910 and also can't get Pay to work. Same details as you and I'm tapping the camera to the NFC receivers. Phone vibrates, but doesn't do anything.

I wonder if this is a V20 bug or something wrong with Android Pay. I have tried to read my MRT card with the app that they supply for topping up and it works just fine so I question where the issue is as it seems that NFC is working fine.
My bro also can't use Android Pay on his H990DS. Contacted Google, keep asking the same questions that he had already answered. Obviously they don't have a solution to this at the moment.
Hi there,
Is there a workaround or a root function to enable Always On listening for 'OK Google' while the screen is off/AOD?
It is really bugging me but I cannot see a workaround already posted.
Thanks!

I have that setting enabled. It works on the lock screen where you can swipe to unlock, but not on the darker lock screen, where it shows the time and the outline of your notifications.

I have enabled them options. It works on the light lockscreen, where you can scroll your notifications and have the 2 icons in the bottom corners.
It does not work on the darker lock screen, or the Always On Display screen, where it only shows the time and the outline of notifications you have.

Works here as it should. With AOD and without. Are you rooted? If you are try other ROM. If you are not, try reflashing stock firmware with Odin or with Side Sync or whatever Samsung kies is now called.

Okay, I will have a look into reflashing if that'll fix it.

Same for me Dan, works after you swipe but not from AOD, every tutorial I have seen says the same, has to be "open" before it will work.
Bixby will unlock from the AOD screen if you set that up, hope that helps

I have Bixby set up, which I just use to open Google now, not ideal, but it is a workaround nonetheless!

It works for you because you are using a Note 8 ported ROM. Because Samsung enabled this feature on the Note 8. It will not currently work on the stock S8 ROM. Some people seem to be in a server side test to enable this feature though.
Okay, I see.
Does charging not stop at 80% for you because you are rooted?

It was working for me on Bat Stock ROM and it is S8 ROM. I never used stock ROM so I can't say anything about that, I rooted my device and flashed custom ROM before even setting it up after unboxing.

I meant "open" as in on lock screen re your above post, the screen after AOD, sorry for any confusion

It's best to think of the always-on display as "Screen Off", which is why OK Google doesn't work on stock ROM. That's standard Android procedure to avoid draining the battery by always listening for voice commands.
At one point, Google Assistant was able to listen when the screen was off, so long as the phone was being charged. Unfortunately, that feature disappeared at some point in the past half year or so (which caused me some confusion when it stopped working and I could no longer find the toggle).

That's not true. It still works on a Google Pixel running stock Android with the screen off and not charging. You never had to have it plugged in or charging for that to work. Samsung is the ONLY Android phone I know of that OK Google doesn't work with the screen off.
