Obviously replace the screen is the first thought, I have read reviews on Amazon about the replacement screen from ASUS and its mixed reviews. Should I just buy a new or risk getting a lemon?

For the cost of one of these now....just buy another one used. Or a new 2013.
I wouldn't personally go through the hassle and cost of trying to fix it. ?
Buying a used nexus 7 is a better option:good:
I got a new (barely used) screen + frame assembly on ebay for $50. It works great and the seller was just a couple states away. I haven't had a single problem with my new screen. Parts can be found relatively easily if you don't want the cost of buying a whole used or new tablet. I can't say for sure about the amazon products, but my experience in buying a new screen was painless, quick, and cheap. My kids use my nexus 7 more than I do, so I was more worried about getting it back up and running immediately to avoid being referee to their fights lol.
I got one for 65$ from eBay China seller. And replaced it myself..

I've been considering a N7 for a while but have two questions the first is: has Google/Asus acknowledged the issues with the raised screens and just general problems with the screen? If I order one I'd hope that when it arrived it didn't haven't any issues.
The second is I've been reading about the multiple user accounts hidden in JB, are Google likely to release this feature with 4.2? Or sooner?
Cheers

Not sure about the manufacturing problems.
And regarding the user accounts, no-one knows except Google, but I would guess since there is the beginnings of code in 4.1.1, it would be very likely that it will be in the next version of Android!
You have to remember only people with issues tend to post. I have two N7's and so far no screen lift.

Not sure about the user account, but if you buy the nexus 7 you are basicly garenteed to get it if it does ever come out on JB. For the screen lift, I can't speak if I is fixed, but I got a second wave 16gb with no issues. One more thing, if you do get one, get the 16gb, the 8gb it only has 5.3gb of free space to load stuff on. Good luck!

I agree get the 16gb
I agree get the 16gb one and a cheap case on Amazon. I picked up a 7 dollar poetic case and waiting on a smart cover like case. Cases also make it easier to Swype. If your going to root pick up a micro to full usb for stick mount.
Ok cheers for the advice guys, I guess if there is an issue I can just get a replacement and the reason I was interested in the user accounts was because it'd be cool for my whole family to use it. I'm now torn between 16GB and 8GB haha. Probably just go for 8 and use USB OTG and save myself £40
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda app-developers app
Def get the 16gb since there's no microsd slot, I wish they had a 32gb for $300.
Have had my Nexus7 for over a week now and have had no problems AT ALL. I was also debating between the 8 and 16gb, and decided to just spend the extra £40 as once you've bought it, you've bought it! It is definitely worth spending the extra £40 to have an extra 8gb on board with you. I've got GTA3, a full backup, a few roms and quite a few apps and i'm down to 8gb so would be out of space already!
So my dog decided to chew on my nexus and the screen is cracked from top to bottom and is unresponsive to touch...
Have any of you had any luck with finding replacement parts? All I have found was this guy and it just seems pretty sketchy to me... I also found replacement backs which I will probably get.
www.dfwpcrepairs.com/google_nexus_7__tablet_screen_repair.html
Have no problems doing the repairs myself just need the parts first...
I wouldn't trust the website, the cost of the screen repair is very high because asus have made it so that the LCD is glued to the digitizer making it cost a hefty $160 for Asus to repair it themselves.
Also I cracked my nexus 7 and sent it to knowhow coverage, they told me that it is impossible for them to get their hands on a screen.
Instead they're reviewing the problem and giving me a £200 voucher for currys and PC world.

Alright so I just need to stencil the ASUS logo then spray paint it on my dog?
Cool!
Guess I will wait a little bit and what comes around for fixing myself. May email ASUS and see If I can pay them to repair it (doubtful) or worst case senario I just buy another one.
Thanks Guys
I have been looking for Nexus 7 parts just in case something happens to one of my Nexus 7's and I couldn't find anything. ASUS will repair a broken screen for $170(US). It might actually be cheaper to buy a 8gb Nexus 7, harvest the screen and sell the rest of the parts on ebay. You may end up getting it for free if you can sell everything else off. The battery is Worth $40, The 8gb logic board is worth $99, front facing camera is $15, I/O cable(charging port and headset jack) is $15, Speaker is $15 and the charger is $15.
Is the bezel (silver lining around the screen) part of the screen also? Does that mean if i were to replaced a dented bezel, I have to replace the whole screen?

Unfortunately it is.
info
I just spoke with Asus eStore.
http://www.service.asus.com/infopage.aspx?rid=7#!consumer/csn9
Their web site lists nexyus 7 but has no parts listed.
http://us.estore.asus.com/
The person I spoke to said they do not sell the replacement screen and it would be via repair only. I was told the parts store will probably only carry chargers and cables.
I managed to get the part number of the screen it is: 90R-OK0M1L11000U (that is the letter "O" imediatly before the "K")
They had no record of who the (3rd party?) manufacturer of the screen is.
I strongly suggested they offer hte screen as a part for direct sale as the repair cost is approx the same as a new tablet, so not worth doing.
I STATED THAT THE PRESENT RESTRICTION MAKES ME QUESTION BUYING FUTURE ASUS PRODUCTS.
If enough people complain we may push them to sell replacement screen parts from their parts store.
The screen is made by Hydis model # HV070WX2. I still have not been able to find someone that has them in stock. There is a site I found that supposedly has 5k in stock for wholesalers.

would this by any chance void the warranty? my back pocket managed to crack the screen on one i JUST got from RMA. at this point i wouldnt mind buying a new one and keeping it around till replacement screens are actually plausible.
The screens are just starting to show up on the market. They are $160+. Almost easier to buy a new 8GB instead of a new LCD/Digitizer.
I'm hoping the price comes down with competition, but at this point there isn't any competition there's only few limited sources.

ASUS will service it for 202.00, ie: motherboard. They won't sell me a motherboard. They won't repair the one I have. Say they're not for sale, can't sell. I might as well just buy a new one. Last ASUS product I'll ever buy.
i would wait to see what they do with the 8GB with the discontinuing of them before buying screen. Like someone else said, use one for salvage if it is dirt cheap

If you're looking for a motherboard you can pick up cheap as-is nexus 7's on eBay all day. I bought one with a broken screen that 100% works. The crack is at the top near the camera and does not extend into the screen. I got it for less than $50. I know how lucky I got, I feel like I won the lottery.
You can get them as low as $30. Not bad to use the motherboard or even spare battery. Even the back case is worth that almost.

Yeah, I caught that. Only two on Ebay when I looked. $31.00 and 9.90. So definitely the route I'll be going.
Nexus 7 screen cracked
My nexus 7 32gb screen has cracked & I was wondering if any other screen would fit or does it need
To be an original cos of the digitiser?
I have not found the part I need for mine, boo! I need a usb slot for the damn thing, my son was playing with it and left it on the floor, little to no surprise, he was excited and walked away, came back and stepped on the cord part charging it, so now it wont charge.. the internal usb is all screwed up, its just on a little board that looks like its easy enough to replace once you get the board to replace it with.
@hazard1nc: Here ya go, seems to be a really good shop for replacement parts.
I'm going to buy a new mainboard and speaker for mine there
http://stores.ebay.com/Positive-Dreams-Electronics/
There are some usb/audio replacement boards, I think that's the one you want
Still wondering, why the usb/audio boards are so expensive, but this is normal, didn't find a cheaper one yet.
Hi guys. I have a Nexus S and I already posted this in the NS forums.
Now... I've been wanting a Nexus 7 ever since it was announced, but only now that I can afford one.
But now I see I've got a chance to buy a 16gb Nexus 4.
I was planning on continuing to use my Nexus S as it totally rocks running CM10.1 and using the Nexus 7 for browsing the web around the house and playing games.
If I would buy the Nexus 4 I would obviously not afford the Nexus 7 for a while. But the Nexus 4 is such a sexy piece of hardware and it has a much better camera than the Nexus S and I've got a baby on the way and I would love to be able to take good pictures and HD videos of my little ones.
Help me decide!
Nexus 7 + Nexus S
Or
Nexus 4 only
I´ll tell you one thing that might sway your opinion a bit...
I am in Iceland... A 16gb Nexus 4 is 99.900 ISK = 775 USD. A 32gb Nexus 7 is 59.900 ISK = 465 USD.
:crying:

I would say keep the S and get the 7.
If you are happy with the phone you have now, then keep it and enjoy the larger screen of the 7 for video/pics/etc...
And you will have some money left over to put towards what ever phone Google comes out with next.
Danggg that's expensive
I would keep your current phone, buy the 7, and with the cash saved buy a nice little camera. No phone can replace a camera. You'll have it all. Good luck with the kid. I got two and they ain't cheap..
I just* came from a Nexus S yesterday. I say get the Nexus 4. It is son totally worth it dude....
Crap and I thought that getting the nexus 4 from t-Mobile was expensive.
I would strongly encourage against getting the nexus 4. Instead get the nexus 7. You can still take pictures with the nexus 7 and the nexus s. Your new baby will also be able to use the device to play once he or she is old enough

If it's the most beautiful phone ever made, what do you recommend?
By the way, the battery isn't that bad. You just have to figure out what causes it. Also, the camera isn't horrible. It's above average for a smartphone. Certainly not the best, but it's also not the worst.

If money isn't the issue then Note 2 is the king of the hill. I can fully recommend that. Battery is super good out from the box and camera in top 3 of the smart phones.
I really want to love my Nexus but my heart breaking every time how I see the battery go down and when I take a picture in a bit dark conditions.
Then on the other hand Note 2 which is plastic and kinda ugly and would be great to hate it just always surprises me positively.

Isn't Iceland part of the EU? I have the same problem as you, only I live in the Netherlands. I have the option to buy it from the UK or German playstore, and Germany also sells it elsewhere for a higher price.
You could get it from Canada/USA (when it's available again, or maybe via ebay) and hope you don't have to pay import duty. If you have it sent to you as a gift (like a personal package from family) I believe you don't have to pay taxes. At least that's how it works here. It's a bit of a grey area but I'm not going to pay 100-200 euro more for a phone that's supposed to be cheap.

Just buy it on ebay.co.uk but don't forget to ask the seller if he could send it as a gift. (If you really want to make sure.)

A lot of ebay sellers don't want to do this though. And besides, finding a cheap seller on ebay can be difficult. You have to bid on almost every single one, and that can drive up the price really fast.
Just got my Nexus 10.
I like it but not sure, it's what I'm looking for. I already have a Nexus 4 and 7.
Do I have to justify returning it to Google and is there any charges for this?

Thanks
I don't think that they will take it back if it doesn't have production issues . In your situation it would be a way better decision to sell it through ebay with a price a bit higher than in Gplay, I'm sure there are a lot of peoole even inside UK who will buy it with pleasure and you will get some extra cash.

Buying a replacement screen for a broken N7 can be a pain.
I replaced mine from a Chinese supplier with the same make/model. At the time $160 seemed expensive considering what I paid for my 16Gig N7.
Unfortunately, finding another for that price has become difficult. A lot of state-side suppliers have imported bunches and drove-up the price eBay. Alibaba is an alternative and you could probably find someone willing to sell you just one screen.
IMHO if you're fixing a 16 or 32Gig model, consider buying someone's used 8Gig N7. The screen is the same as your broken one and you could try reselling, donating or experimenting with the remaining innards.
