Few questions before possible purchase - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been considering a N7 for a while but have two questions the first is: has Google/Asus acknowledged the issues with the raised screens and just general problems with the screen? If I order one I'd hope that when it arrived it didn't haven't any issues.
The second is I've been reading about the multiple user accounts hidden in JB, are Google likely to release this feature with 4.2? Or sooner?
Cheers

Not sure about the manufacturing problems.
And regarding the user accounts, no-one knows except Google, but I would guess since there is the beginnings of code in 4.1.1, it would be very likely that it will be in the next version of Android!

You have to remember only people with issues tend to post. I have two N7's and so far no screen lift.

Not sure about the user account, but if you buy the nexus 7 you are basicly garenteed to get it if it does ever come out on JB. For the screen lift, I can't speak if I is fixed, but I got a second wave 16gb with no issues. One more thing, if you do get one, get the 16gb, the 8gb it only has 5.3gb of free space to load stuff on. Good luck!

I agree get the 16gb
I agree get the 16gb one and a cheap case on Amazon. I picked up a 7 dollar poetic case and waiting on a smart cover like case. Cases also make it easier to Swype. If your going to root pick up a micro to full usb for stick mount.

Ok cheers for the advice guys, I guess if there is an issue I can just get a replacement and the reason I was interested in the user accounts was because it'd be cool for my whole family to use it. I'm now torn between 16GB and 8GB haha. Probably just go for 8 and use USB OTG and save myself £40

Def get the 16gb since there's no microsd slot, I wish they had a 32gb for $300.

Have had my Nexus7 for over a week now and have had no problems AT ALL. I was also debating between the 8 and 16gb, and decided to just spend the extra £40 as once you've bought it, you've bought it! It is definitely worth spending the extra £40 to have an extra 8gb on board with you. I've got GTA3, a full backup, a few roms and quite a few apps and i'm down to 8gb so would be out of space already!

Is this tab a good deal for $279? Its the 16gb version norm price is $379. I just wanna make sure everything works well. Any problems with this tab? I have the Lenovo Ideapad K1 and the biggest problem I have with it, is its has horrible WiFi signal and I haven't seen any WiFi issues with this tab. But I did notice that this tab doesn't have gorilla glass. So I also want to make sure the glass doesn't get to scratched easily and that its sensitive enough.
Thanks, Dev

Good luck actually getting one, but I think it sounds like a good deal. Remember this does have expandable memory, so really internal storage isn't a huge problem. I had the transformer prime for a while, loved it, but couldn't justify the expense so I returned it. This thing is the exact same device with a plastic back and slightly lower res screen If this sale is going on cyber Monday too I'm certainly snagging one.

It sounds like a good deal to me. I'd run with it. I have the 32 GB version, with another 32 GB micro SD card. I paid $297 for mine on the no tax weekend at Micro Center in St. Louis. These were on clearance. I've had 4 tablets already, the Acer Iconia 500, the iPad 2, the Galaxy Tab 2, and this one. I've enjoyed this one more than all the others.
Today, a boss of mine, that I see once a year, came in, and noticed he had an iPad with him. I really wanted to say to him, "So, you got a pretentious hunk of junk, huh?" But I figured that would hurt his feelings.

New Egg has it up to 349.99, but Walmart has it a 319.99 right now. I am going to get Best Buy to price match and will pick it up in store today. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Asus-TF30...-Cream-Sandwich-Operating-System-Red/21104522
You can get the 32Gb version at Walmart for 319. You can't walk in the store and get it for that though. You have to pay for it online and then go get it. I just did that.

Same here...sure would like the link so could pick it up at Bestbuy and not hassle with Black Friday crowds! Like the $299 OfficeDepot price for the 32GB but w/sd card don't think I need the add'l 16GB. Other than production apps that can't use SD storage, any major benefit for getting the 32Gb model?
Also (and new thread likely best, but...) this'll be my first tablet. Mostly for multimedia, browsing, e-books, & general game playing - considering Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 too. Though Galaxy might(?) have a better multimedia experience (not so much into the Galaxy's "extra" GUI), but TF300T seems to have better multimedia & overall performance. Am I losing much if any on graphics & sound in going for the better performance? Sorry, I know it's been discussed some elsewhere, but need some additional thoughts to help me know I'm not making the wrong choice!

My advice is to make sure you can return it just in case you're not happy with it. I/O issue plagues most of current Asus pads so in the end, lower price may not justify the frustration. Again you might be ok with it but just in case.

Good point - just checked with Office Depot and they do give 14 days to return it for a full refund. So that shouldn't be a problem...
As for the I/O issue, how prevalent is it? I did a quick search and did find some references. This has me greatly concerned and if it's that big problem of a problem, then about only alternative is the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1. But being a dual core, was worried it'd be noticeably slow in running apps, browsing/viewing multimedia, etc. Did like some aspects of the Galaxy, but was really leaning towards the TF300T.
Just came across one XDA thread from August discussing ASUS working on fixing this and the OTA 4.0.4 greatly helped the benchmarks. Is it possible a new kernel or update has corrected the issues at this point? Another in September mentioned using a custom ROM...I plan on rooting it, though just as with my EVO3D thought I'd stay with the stock rooted ROM. I'd figure this an option to help correct the problem if I do encounter it (and if necessary, run a different ROM)?
Lastly, how difficult is it to root?
Thanks much for the insights!!
Can you get the Black version only at BB? I would love to get that one but online for $279..

I noticed on the Office Depot Black Friday ad that they have the TF300T 32Gb for $299.99 (advertised as blue so may not be the black you want). Some items are available for sale online tomorrow - Update: turns out have to go to the store on Friday morning to get this deal. I know it's an extra $20 and quite possibly blue, but still a good deal...
And yes, after reading more I feel less wary of the i/o issue. Some had encountered it, others not and seemed that OTA updates (possibly moving from ICS to Jelly Bean) helped. Plus rooting and running a custom ROM is another option or worst case, bring it back...
Looks like another round of learning regarding unlocking the bootloader and rooting. Was reading a bit about being able to do OTA updates if rooted (but not unlocked), and restoring root after. Seems to me on my EVO3D doing OTA's after unlocking & rooting weren't recommended, and that may be the case here too? I do have to go back and do more reading on these topics!

Upgrade from trouble-free 16GB to 32GB?

I've had a zero-problem, trouble-free 16GB N7 with great battery life that I bought in late July and started using in earnest at the beginning of Sptember. But I've got a friend who might want to buy this one and let me upgrade to a new 32GB. So that leads me to three questions...
1) Is there a risk of getting a new "problematic" N7 and is it worth it?
2) Would you get the mobile data version?
3) How much would you sell the 16GB N7 (with a 2yr squaretrade warranty on it)?
Thanks!
I was under the impression the new 32GB Nexus 7 was a more reliable build and actually a little faster. I'd upgrade in a heart beat. You will lose money on your 16GB though. I imagine less than $170 or they might as well get it brand new for $200 and that's if they are too lazy to find a deal this holiday season.

1) There's always risk. Mine came without and problems, I'm sure the issues are fixed by now.
2) What do you care if we'd get it? Do you need it?
3) sqaretrade warranty is useless to me (I don't even know what it is), I'd buy a used one for half the price of new one.
I'd say that 16GB to 32GB w/o mobile data is just a minnor upgrade. So from my point of view, get 3G version or stay with your current trouble-free 16GB.

I agree with this one...
If you have another Nexus device it is easier and cheaper to just tether then have to buy the 3G version unless its cheap to add to your existing plan.. Then it would be a good buy. What I do is save my tether settings to the N7 and whenever my Galaxy Nexus has tethering enabled the N7 connects automatically without any issue and it takes only a few seconds to toggle.
That said if you have a trouble free model and you don't worry about space then stick with what you got.. Don't look a gift horse in the mouth, a lot of us had to go through a few models before getting a trouble free one.

Well, I wasn't going to entertain it, but I looked at my space and, only 3 months into using this thing, I'm down to 4GB of space. I'm not real keen on OTG or messing with that, so, witha lump in my throat, I'm gonna take the plunge and go for the 32GB version. Since I've got tethering capabilities on my cell, I'm not gonna go for the 3g version.
Thanks for the feedback everyone. Now it's just a matter of keeping my fingers crossed, I guess.
My 32gb is perfect. It was an October release. My 16gb got stolen the day before OfficeMax started selling them. Funny cause I actually bought a 16gb and got home, set it up, jumped on XDA and seen the 32gb at OfficeMax. Called my local store and had them hold one.
Picked up my 32gb and returned the 16gb.
16 is OK but I like to throw games on there. I was hitting my Max and started having to uninstall some to play others. Plus my 16gb was stolen so the answer was easy. $250 for 16gb or 32gb... toughie

Upgrade 8gb N7 to a 32gb, worth it or just get the N10?

So I've got the first batch of 8gb N7s when it was released. Seeing how they don't make them no more I was thinking of possibly buying another N7 32gb (aren't they $199 now on sale?). But was thinking maybe just adding a couple hundred more dollars and getting the N10 instead.
I just don't know if either would be worth it though since I rarely ever leave the house and even more rarely leave the computer room =/. And I'm the only one in the house who would even know what to do with a N7 so plans of giving it as a present to a family member may be kinda slim.
What should I do?
I wouldn't upgrade unless you actually need the extra space for your device. If you were to get anything just go with a N10 so you have relatively different devices for potentially different day to day uses.

I sold my 8GB on eBay for $175 and then waited for one of those daily deals on there. Only paid $229 for the new 32GB but even if you buy one from the play store its still a good deal I believe.

The Nexus 7 16gb is $199 dollars and 32gb is $249. Unless you find them on sale somewhere online or local store.
If you did choose to buy a new Nexus 7 with more space. You could keep your old 8gb for parts if you would ever need them later.

It is really not a hard decision tree.
If you have no need for a tablet, keep what you have or sell it and get nothing else.
If your current tablet meets your needs, keep it and get nothing else.
If you need more storage, sell what you have and get either a 32GB N7 or N10, depending on which size you prefer.
There is also a 3G consideration in there which might be a factor - but I prefer tethering anyway.
I have been kind of thinking of upgrading mine to 32gb, I brought quite a few games and they are so huge, I can imagine next year my 16gb being taken up with 2-3 games.

Ever considered getting an OTG cable?
No not reallly. Basically lets you use an external hdd for storage right?
Personally I don't want a cable hanging off my portable device, I don't even like having it plugged in while using. Which is why, whenever possible, I get my electronics in 32GB version.
As for getting a nexus 10 as replacement, if you want a larger size tablet go for it, it all comes down to what YOU want out of a tablet.

Screen loose on all models?

Is the screen looseness issue on all the variations of the N7 or did they end up fixing it with the "new" (pricing) 16&32?
I bought a 8g in July and Google was gracious enough to RMA me another 8, which had the same problem. So I returned it for a full refund.

My 16gb from dec is a C70 I think and was better built than my dec 32gb CA0 (screen lift etc). However my replacement 32gb is CA0 and is fine but still doesn't feel quite as good as the older model 16gb (but I'm happy with it). So from my experience I would say the middle models are the sweet spot and the wifi only 16gb seems to be the best chance of getting one of those.
Either way all the issues are still around so you might get it again. :/ Can only assume the adjustments they have been making is reducing the chance.

Broken screen, what to do?

Obviously replace the screen is the first thought, I have read reviews on Amazon about the replacement screen from ASUS and its mixed reviews. Should I just buy a new or risk getting a lemon?

For the cost of one of these now....just buy another one used. Or a new 2013.
I wouldn't personally go through the hassle and cost of trying to fix it. ?
Buying a used nexus 7 is a better option:good:
I got a new (barely used) screen + frame assembly on ebay for $50. It works great and the seller was just a couple states away. I haven't had a single problem with my new screen. Parts can be found relatively easily if you don't want the cost of buying a whole used or new tablet. I can't say for sure about the amazon products, but my experience in buying a new screen was painless, quick, and cheap. My kids use my nexus 7 more than I do, so I was more worried about getting it back up and running immediately to avoid being referee to their fights lol.
I got one for 65$ from eBay China seller. And replaced it myself..
