As I no longer have my xperia play, been about 6-7 months since I got my nexus 5. I found this article interesting. It does nor mention the play. But I believe, if memory serves me right, that it could be possible to port this to the play. The article is here:

So this has me thinking..... Nexus S is similerly specs to the Xperia PLAY and it will be getting Jelly Bean...man... For those curios unless games work great on ICS and or JB I will stick with GB as it offers, currently, the most compatibility. Still though.. if the Nexus S can get it the nwhy not the PLAY. Clearly $ony has moved on and has forgotten about our awesome little gaming phone.... guess its JB or waiting until later today to see what the supposed new ZTE Gaming phone is all about.... peace ya'll

Devs will make it happen though
Isn't it cause games wouldn't work as well otherwise?

Thats why i am still on GB and dont plan on moving to ICS. Most games are not opimized to work on ICS.
The ZTE smart phone doesn't even have a gamepad. Also only a tegra 2 processor. Bit dated. On the plus side, it is cheap though, only £189.99

THATS A GAMING PHONE!!!!!! Ummmmmm....yeah..OK. I will keep my awesome xperia play thank you very much. I was thinking it would have a slide out game pad. But a touchscreen for gaming....as all PLAY users will comment.. touchscreen gaming blows.... I'm starting to sound like TLRtheory. its OK though he's cool

i just really hope that jelly bean gets ported well to the play with project butter and stuff... + the gaming (at least emulators) works as good as with gingerbread... but i dont think its gonna happen :/
Due to project butter, jellybean seems like a major change from ICS, more so than gingerbread to ICS (not in terms of appearance)

Yeah! Looks like we will never get something that will replace our SE-XPLAYS!!!! Shame really thought we might be seeing some Tegra 3, GamePad love! But hey! Its not like we have ever had our hopes and dreams smashed before now is it!
Wasn't ever going to happen. Anyway, doesn't Sony have the patent for physical gamepad in a phone?
i heard that JB only needs 512 of ram. Does it mean that it will probably run better as ICS did?

Oh god, not this again.
The reason that the Xperia Play is not getting ICS is not because its hardware!!!!
READ THE FOLLOWING LINES PLEASE!
The reason because the Xperia Play won't get ICS goes like this:
1- Sony launches the Xperia Play.
2- Some months later, some developers like Rockstar Games and EA make some outsanding games compatible with the Xperia Play (GTAIII, Dead Space...) wich helps a lot on the sales of this smartphone.
3- Sony, wich plans to update the Xperia Play to ICS like the other Xperias from 2011, launches a beta of ICS for the Xperia Play in order to allow people to test how their apps and games run on the new version of Android.
4- The beta works great on the phone, but some games like GTA III and other important titles don't run well. These games need to be updated to work correctly on the ICS for the Xperia Play.
5- Rockstar, EA and others refuse to update their games for the Xperia Play.
6- Sony, with no option, doesn't want to lose the most important titles of the Xperia Play and decides to not update the device.
END.
Just found this. Take it with a grain of salt for now.

That would be nice.
Too good to be true.
Really hope this is real, I'd love a proper JB on my XPlay...
That would be a great way to get more stable JB on Play

All ICS builds have 4.1.X.#.# and all GB 2.3.4 builds had 4.0.#.X.#.#. I highly doubt they would release a new Gingerbread build with ICS already released for months now. And I believe- as I stated in an old forum post of mine- the next ICS build might be 4.1.B.0.626 after the Neo L received it a few weeks ago. But until we receive anything official it's all speculation.

Was just browsing but the Xperia Play never had the ICS update (**** Sony) and this open source archive has Xperia Play files in there, and plus in the description:
Open source download for Xperia™ arc S, Xperia™ ray, Xperia™ neo V, Xperia™ mini, Xperia™ pro, Xperia™ active, Live with Walkman, Xperia™ neo, Xperia™ mini pro, and Xperia™ PLAY; software version 4.0.2.A.0.84.

I think maybe it's bug fix for GB
I am a little upset that the xperia E comes with official Android 4.1 JB having less specs then the xperia play and they get jellybean! not ICS straight to jellybean! both specs are identical but the xperia E has a lower Gpu and internal memory AND STILL! I understand that sony said that they wanted to leave this phone as a gaming phone but at least make it a optional update on your own risk or something

I think the problem is even if Sony released JB for our phone game development would still be slowing down like it has been lately. Plus all the older XPO releases like asphalt 6 and star battalion wouldn't work. Not like a lot of people play those. I still do. Is it possible to utilize some aspects of the xperia e's firmware?

thats why i say at your own risk, for people who might not want to game in the xperia play
Wouldn't be the first time a weaker phone got a newer FW than Xperia Play... we've already established that the reason Xperia Play didn't get ICS/JB was because it would throw the software compatibility way off.
If you want a good example of how bad it would've been, just look at all Evo V owners who are in an absolute fury because the vast majority of 3D games were made to operate under 2.3. The way I see it, Sony did the smart thing by opting for a more stable ecosystem.
The thing is that a lot of app developers are abandoning gb, and making apps for 4.0+, even Google them self, example, chrome browser a great browser but not for gb.
I'd even settle for a decent official ics from Sony, I mean the developers here are doing a better job than them

The Xperia Play has a Scorpion S2 CPU, it's old. The Xperia E is a Cortex A5. Scorpion might be faster in raw flops but the A5 has more features. Snapdragon is quite poor by today's standards and the Xperia E will probably beat it in many ways.

They don't do it on purpose. 2.x API just doesn't support anywhere near as much as 3.0+.

Hey dan!
and i see what you mean by the differences, i seen some benchmarks
I am going to admit many people know more about the inner workings of hardware. But I am sure that with the xperia e's 320x240 resolution also helps in benchmarks as it's not having to push as much in terms of resolution. Although I know that is only one aspect of a bigger picture.

My friend has an Xperia J which is running on stock ICS and I can tell you it is laggy as hell, my phone with Krisdee's Hybrid ROM is much more stable. I know this has nothing to do with the Xperia E but Xperia J has similar hardware as our Xperia Play. Maybe he has a faulty device, I don't know.
