[Q] 4.3 or 4.4.2? - Nvidia Tegra Note 7

Greetings PROGRAMs! No one really gave me an answer in the general android section, so I'll post it here. I'm at a bit of a conundrum.
I have an HP Slate 7 extreme Nvidia tegra tablet currently running Android 4.3. I just got the update notification a couple of days ago and I would like to know if it's safe to update to 4.4.2. I've read the horror stories about 4.4.2's horrible battery drain problem and the disabling of external storage i.e: micro SD Cards. And I just got a 32gb micro SD just for this tablet.
So, should I update? Any help is always appreciated. Thanks!

Bump

Bump

There is a delight drain in battery I think, but not too noticeable, the rest of the sad card issues can be easily fixed via rooting and using the tool in the forums here

First, though I don't know if it's an actual rule here, I've been on XDA for like 4 years now and never seen anyone "bump" their posts... bumping your own post seems kinda faux pas around here, and especially in this device's forum, there aren't enough posts happening for something to disappear after a day or two. Please be patient.
Second, the SD card is not disabled, but Android 4.4 won't allow you to change its contents, so you can use files on it just fine, but you can't copy anything to it or delete anything from it. As Nielo360 mentioned, there is a fix for rooted users.
Third, I was having battery issues as well, but I did a full factory reset and it literally fixed everything. I just made a post regarding this over on EVGA's forums... maybe I'll cut-and-paste it into a post over here as well. Just be sure to back up anything on the internal storage if you try this as it'll wipe everything, even photos/files/etc. With the tablet sitting there asleep, it can literally go over a week without needing a charge, and even in use it seems to be much better than before.

Me personally I regret upgrading to 4.4. Maybe its silly but I do not want to root my device (security, guarantee issues) just to get my SD card working again. There are not that many improvements in KitKat to root device for them just to fix what has been broken.

Ah, I see. Sorry about the bumps. It's been a rule of thumb for me that if no one replies to a post within a week or so, it's been forgotten or ignored. Didn't mean to violate any regulations. I did notice that since I uodated to 4.3, battery life has diminished by a considerable margin. It barely lasts a day. Any idea how to fix that?
Also my exchange email doesn't work anymore on 4.3

Finally got an arc.

Hi guys I finally got my arc today. In love with it more than I was with my x10i and desire hd. Anyway I have a couple of enquiries.
First of all what is the 2nd mic used for?
Secondly, does the noise reduction option in call settings help and if so how? What difference is there in it being on and off?
Last but not least...ive seen two or three threads regarding 0% battery...what is this issue actually about?
Thanks and looking forward to join in with discussions and other threads.
Sent from my LT15i using Tapatalk
The 2nd mic is used for the noise cancellation - it record the background noise separately from the main mic then will subtract the one signal from the other to try and help reduce/remove it.
As for how effective it is, I've never knowingly used it, so I can't comment.
The 0% battery issue seems to be some sort of problem related to trying to flash/root the handset in a particular way.
There are solutions out there, so if you're afflicted by it there are ways of sorting it but I wouldn't worry unless it happens.
your second question is the answer to your first. the 2nd mic is on the back and is supposed to monitor the sounds of the area around you, to then cancel that noise whilst on a call. can't say how effective the noise reduction is, but i guess its working well since people rarely have any issues hearing me in busy, loud environments.
the 0% battery issue is only if you're rooting or flashing on your handset from what i understand. so if you wish to stay with stock SE firmware, you wont have this issue. SE is updating their firmwares reasonably quickly anyway, so if you don't root it, its not a major issue (well not for me anyway).
hope you like your arc, love this phone <3
Thank you so much guys. For a newbie to this phone can anyone give me any tips and tricks? And have any of you guys experienced the crack that everyone is on about?
Sent from my LT15i using Tapatalk
Yeah, I've got the crack(s).
Never noticed 'til I went looking for them though, so it's not worth worrying about IMO.
So far I've dropped the phone on concrete and tiles about 4 times and haven't got the cracks, so I've been pretty lucky. I do have some rough corners as a result, so make sure you take good care of it!
I find that the phone has nowhere near enough internal memory, so if you download many apps, you'll need to start moving as many as you can to the sd card. Note that apps stored on the sd card cannot have widgets, so if you want a specific apps widget, it'll need to be on internal memory
Sent from my LT15i using XDA App
I have the cracks over the sensor that others have experienced, despite never dropping my phone. I think the plastic is not the best quality and tbh you can feel how fragile it is when you first pick it up. My old phone was HTC HD2 and felt like a brick compared to my Arc. I'm still umming and arrrring about sending it in for repair......
As for any tips? There is a thread here which you might find useful
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1194545
Thanks for the info guys. Im just scared now though but the crack situation. I have currently got a leather pouch on my arc

It's not worth worrying mate, it doesn't get any worse and it doesn't affect the phone in any way.

Cheers mate. Just another quick question to everyone. How many apps have everybody got on their device? My reason for asking is because my internal memory went really low. I dont really wanna move apps to sd if I can help it. Edit: I have 70 apps installed in the downloaded section ofmanage application including market youtube and maps. Is that good? Keeping in mind two or three of them are either licenses eg titanium pro and some widgets

I have 146 apps installed in my Arc and I moved it all to SD Card, if possible..
I have ~150 apps in total installed and have 41Mb free on phone memory. All have moved to SD card (where possible) using Apps2SD. I'm sure I could get rid of alot of the older I apps I don't use as much
As mentioned above, I wouldn't worry too much about the crack. It does not affect phone's performance and most people will not notice it unless you point it out to them.
I was thinking of sending mine in for repair, but last night when I got home opened car door and my Arc fell out of my pocket on concrete floor. It bounced a couple of times so I feared the worst. After close inspection, there are 2 small scuff marks on side and that's all, no damage to screen nothing.....thankfully, maybe I got lucky, but will no longer be sending it in for repair as SE will say it was caused by dropping it.
Yep second mic is used for clever phasing to cancel out the external noise.
thanks guys...yesterday I updated via SEUS in order to root and hopefully update to 2.3.4 however I am still on 2.3.3 with firmware version 4.0.A.2.368...in SEUS it said that the home screen will now support landscape mode but ive not seen much difference.

I remember reading this in an old firmware update changelog. It seems SE actually meant that there was landscape home screen support when screen mirroring via HDMI (ie. when you hook up your arc to a monitor/TV, you can see the phone on the monitor/TV in landscape). on the phone however, the home screen is always in portrait
im sorry to keep bugging everybody with question after question but i wanted to know how much space do apps take on sd card? for example if an app on internal memory takes 1mb will it be the same on the sd card? Im just wondering because even though my sd card shows hidden files, both on Astro and Windows i can never see the app files.
thanks you everybody for your cooperation
Pretty much the same space, yeah - they still take up a small amount of memory on the handset (a couple of KB or so) but basically it's all just shoved onto the card instead.

anyone else having problems with the LA4

Hi guys
Installed the stock german LA4 a couple of weeks ago and it worked just fine for a week, but now the last 5 days it has been freezing daily no buttons working the screen stays on, so the only thing i can do is pull the battery out and restart..
sometimes it seems to work fine but when you try to make a call with full service it just breaks before it starts to ring, and again i have to restart..
yesterday when i was shooting some stupid videos i noticed that the voice is beeing playbacked with a half a second delay and the movie lags all the way trough..
anyone got the same issues? or solutions?
I have noticed that it was mega fast at the start now it can be a bit skuggish im gonna re flash and see if that solves things weird. . I have also bought a class 10 memory card hopjng that speeds my phone up to

Have you rooted?? Recently installed any Apps?? try removing those apps. still problem exists then flash LA4 again.
Will a class 10 speed the phone up? at moment have a class 4
Thanks
Sent from my GT-N7000 using xda premium
From what I've read class 10 cards are not faster (in fact sometimes even slower) than class 4s. Class 10 cards would allow better writing of large files such as HD videos but for small back and forth read/writes its the class 4 that actually seems to work more efficiently.
There's some very detailed information on this somewhere on XDA but I can't give you the link right now. Do a search on MicroSd cards and see what comes back. Basically though I'd save your money if I were you because you probably wont see any marked improvement in speeds by shelling out for an expensive class 10!
Actually I've found it. Read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1150369
It explains in detail the difference I've mentioned...

well i am currently using samsung class 10 32 Gb micro sd card and it's more faster than my previous 32 Gb class 4 sandisk sd card. my music won't skip now and scanning after reboot, deleting files and updating folders is much more improved and i bought it half the price of my sandisk.

i don't have that problem or any other problem for that matter with la4 for about a month now. i am rooted with cf root kernel. perhaps some applications that you have installed caused this problem. since my galaxy s, i have experienced those after installing some application. you have to be observant after installing an application so you can identify which one causes a problem.
I hv no problem with LA4 at all..i hope my note can be good to me until i got the ics haha
Don't know if this is the right thread to post on, but my brand new unlocked Note is acting up at times.
It keeps on giving me a message that my SIM card had been removed n to reboot the phone, for no apparent reason. Works fine when I restart the phone for a little while. Initially I thought it was something too do with my Sim card so had that replaced, but it still happens pretty much on a daily basis and I can't seem to understand why. Any ideas / suggestions guys?
I had usb issues after upgrading to LA4 but i switched over to RocketRom v22 and the problem went away.
Basically when transferring files to my Note the USB would lose the connection or stop and restart ..

[Q] Nexus 7 running incredibly slow

My 1st generation Nexus 7 started running incredibly slowly - to the point of unusability - around the time I set up a second user profile on it for my fiancée. I'm not sure if these two are connected, however we are using the same two-profile setup on our Nexus 10 with no issues.
N7 was running stock, and I finally had enough of not being able to use it so I wiped and installed the latest nightly of CM which I'm running on both my N4's and also the N10. Since flashing CM on the N7, there has been little improvement in the speed of the device.
I'm very hesitant to put it down to a hardware problem, as it seems very unlikely to me. I think it's far more likely that there is a misbehaving app or service that I had before, and re-installed since flashing CM and is continuing to cause problems.
Looking at the battery usage graph, I can't see anything obvious that stands out. Is there any other way I can find out if there is a misbehaving app or service that's causing this problem? Do you have any other suggestions on how I can narrow down what the problem may be?
Many thanks.
How much memory do you have still free on it? It's a known fact, that if you go low of memory (<1-2GiB free) the system is slowing down very much.

Are you talking about storage space?
I have 2.98GB free right now, apparently.
..
Yes, storage space. There was already a thread some time ago where especially people who had bought the 8GB version noticed a massive slow down after they had installed some apps and the free memory went below 3GB(!) (I remembered wrong, it was not 1-2GB, but 3GB). The thread can be found here
use clean master to clean your cache and kill tasks.i do it constantly so my device runs speedy
Try to get more than 3GB of freespace then try lagfix(fstrim) free.
Has ran into this problem once. but after done booth solutions above now my N7 is running as smooth as Brand New again.
P.S. Before I've found Lagfix(FStrim) I'm use Forever Gone and it work just as well as Lagfix did. except Forever Gone is take much longer time than Lagfix to finish its job.

HOW TO - Fix Lollipop Slow Down Issues

ive been using the apps from this guy
https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...terprise&hl=en
ram booster and cache apps to sd booster
significant performance increase. im talking about no slowdowns and easy multitasking
after unlocking, installing lollipop and rooting
pretty significant increases. cannot complain at all.
dont have any slowdowns on my other 2 devices (n7 2013 and n6 on vzw) so cant compare to those but this fixed my shield lollipop issues
he has a lot of other products as well but i havent used them.

Woops Sorry. Here's a link to the ram Booster app then just click more apps by gejos
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gejos.android.rambooster
I remember the good old days of Eclair when these things used to be commonplace.
tl;dr if you're actually running one of these things and you're seeing a large and measurable change... something's not quite right.
Yes. Lollipop update. Tried factory reset, deleting certain apps. Nothing seems to help until I tried the ram Booster.
Ermm. Sounds like placebo. This isn't android gingerbread anymore and these types of tweaks are largely useless... On our high end device anyways.
If you do a search on xda, I am not the first person to mention these apps specifically. I agree that these things are mostly garbage but this one is different. I urge whoever is having performance issues with lollipop to try this.
Are you using the donate version with more options? I think I tried this app before and it didn't fix my slowdowns, but I will try again. I don't have SD card so I can't try the other cache to SD-app.
The slow downs and memory leak are so frustrating, I have to restart a couple of times every day to be able to play for an example Simpsons Tapped out. I use the same apps on my ASUS Tegra 4 tablet with 4.4.2 and it feels so much faster and there is no need to restart it every day.

nope, regular free version. i didnt even know the donate one had more options
Neither the donate or free version should provide any noticeable difference besides maybe more battery drain.
Thanks for the helpful feedback. Please try the app first and then you can comment.
I have been running the app for 5 days now, can't say I see any difference, I still have the memory leak (or what it is that causes the need to restart once or twice a day). Still have the UI slowdowns too.

I'm just going to venture a guess that any task killer that is significantly improving your battery life is probably rooting out apps that are falling into Lollipops memory holes. So the battery savings are accidental...
This is not how Android is supposed to run. This hasn't been the way Android has run since 2.2 or before, the last time task killers were all the rage.

OEM skin/software

Are you comfortable in your own skin? Is your phone comfortable in its skin? Rate this thread to express how you deem the skin on the Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite. A higher rating indicates that you love it: it adds just the right amount of features, it's visually pleasing, and overall it's additive to the experience. If this is a Nexus phone (you didn't think we hand-wrote all of these prompts, did you?) then use this rating to indicate how the latest version of Android looks to you.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Android One / Stock Android.
Nothing to complain about.
I wished we could get rid of the teal accent color and use the pixel blue, without magisk.
A stock Android. No OEM skin, very minimal bloatware (mostly from Google apps), no "Antivirus" and non-sense apps, and essentially, no Facebook (or related) pre-installed (almost any Android phones of most major brand HAVE them where I live)!
To me, it's a breath of fresh air.
Mi A2's Android One is crap, it replaces loads of bloatware with loads of bugs, I can't believe the OS is so bad... Battery doesn't last as long as when it was on Oreo, SD Card always ejecting itself and makes phone reboot the whole time if you have it as internal storage, MTP is SLOW, really SLOW, for 5GB of data it takes 23 hours to pass... and sometimes cancels transfers.
Fingerprint and other things are worse since Pie update, I'm hoping that Xiaomi fix all of this, or the Mi A2 Lite will be my first and last Xiaomi phone.
Nonsense. You probably f*cked up something with update or you dropped phone so many times that something is broken inside. MTP is normal for me. 3GB for less than 5 minutes. Phone never ejected SD card by itself. I was on Pie and battery life is little bit worse, but I understand that(it is still in beta, it will be fixed). I get 7h of phone usage on Pie, 8h30min on Oreo. Fingerprint is in fact better on Pie.
Bad battery life with Pie?

Turn on Adaptive battery. Disable digital wellbeing, action services, files go and other bloatware apps you don't use(like Google keep, google duo etc.) I take 9 or 8 hours SOT from my 6 months old A2 lite and Ivam heavy user. I only don't play games. I use many social apps, WhatsApp, calling, messaging during a whole day. I charge my phone once a day butbmy SOT is very good.
Also I am at Stock Pie. NOT rooted. I just disabled and uninstalled unnecessary apps and services I mentioned above. Do it you will see big difference about battery life and performance.

Be careful debloating your phone. Because some system apps are really vital or provide battery optimizations for new Android 9. Just do what I said and you will see. Also don't use hibernation apps like greenify. Because new Android 9 already has hibernation system in itself

Well, I have to take my words back from my old comments here, but, starting from 10.0.10.0 onwards, the OS runs not so smooth, introduced more bugs than it have to be solved, eats MicroSD out of nowhere and on top of that, lazy developments. These really hinders of what should AndroidOne is. Yes, there is minimal bloatware, yet the price to pay is the bugs it introduced and never fixed by lazily stating 'bugs fixed'.
I believe 10 is running really good for me.
Not much bothering me other than I have to turn dark mode off to read a couple things once and awhile. Overall everything works as I expect for the amount invested in this device
